I should address the job in a few days. Many thanks for posting your removal. I will be worging on the pre-facelift 1991 model but it seems almost identical!
Enjoy! If I was doing it again I'd definitely lower the gearbox as much as possible before trying to unplug the connections and remove the shift cable.. especially as I had the engine loose anyway so tilting backwards would have been easy. I must just like making life difficult haha
Bill, I see you have looked into AJ6 improvements on your XJS… have you considered converting to manual while all is out? This would certainly be a good investment, as such conversions are hard to find and quite sought after. Great video by the way, love the comments on work attire and choice of pajamas
Not sure who Bill is ha.. but to answer your suggestion. Yes, you're 100% right. I'd love to look into that, would be a fantastic modification. Especially as you say while I have everything out. However.. I do what I do with this car on a ridiculously small budget. I chose a work life balance very heavily leaning towards life, meaning I probably have more time to play in my garage than the average 40 year old.. but far less money! I basically shop for parts/materials on a monthly basis, often not able to spend over £200. Btw I'm not crying poverty haha, just being honest about how my classic car ownership works, basically doing everything myself and spreading work out over years to make possible. That said, I am learning immense amounts about this car, so if in the future I find I have the money to consider a manual conversion, I will feel confident it is a job I can achieve in the garage! I intend to do a video at some point about costs, I think it would be interesting/terrifying to actually add up my receipts over the past 10 years 😳😳😂. Thanks for watching my pajama wearing ramblings! Kind regards, Mike (aka as Bill?) 😊
@@jaguarxjsocd well, first of all we clarified who Bill isn’t… sorry about that, probably carried over from another channel. Thanks for that insight, the hidden story behind the restoration, quite honestly I had a totally opposite picture regarding time and budget. In your place, I would concentrate on the mechanical site, just as you do now, and personally not set the bar too high in terms of paint (referring to front fenders), but that’s just me and I would see the advantages of shifting manually that beautiful engine. My case is a little different: life / work is shifted heavily on work, and the rest is eaten up by the kids, wife and sports… so I barely get 1-2hrs a week for working on a project… enjoy tremendously the other guys progress, until I get there myself. Keep the good humor up, and give the girlfriend a hug for the nail polish, that’s all worth it! 😊😂😜 regards from Munich, Marc Ps: what does OCD mean?
@@marcmichel9797 I honestly didn't want to tackle the bodywork at the moment, but whilst I had a clear engine bay it made zero sense to postpone it. Also I was concerned that the welding required would almost certainly damage my engine bay respray so there's another reason for committing to everything in this order..! OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.. which actually can be a serious mental health condition.. but also in the UK it's a common saying "oh you're OCD about".. in my case, car restoration! Not just car actually I gave my 2003 Yamaha R1 bike the same treatment, it's now better than new. The Jag takes a lot longer as it's .. well a lot bigger! But I'll get there. Whatever "there" is.. I'll always be up to something in the garage! Thanks for watching, lots more bodywork destruction in my next video.. and windscreen removal ha.
I have a 94 xjs 6 litre and I find your videos to be a real treasure. I am replacing my oil pan gasket, among other things, and I am having difficulty removing the bolt at the front corner, passenger side next to the cover for the torque converter shown at the 20:15 mark in your video. There isn’t sufficient room between the pan bolt and the converter cover to use a socket or even an open ended wrench. Do you know how I can remove this bolt? Do I have to remove the converter cover first? Every forum seems to imply that the pan removal is simple but this one bolt is not for me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi, glad my random vids help occasionally! Hmm.. I'm trying to remember, it's been a while since I removed the sump in situ.. I honestly can't remember there being any issues but I'll look through my photo library, see if I can see the problem your having.
Found pics from when I removed the sump a few years ago. I think I see the bolt you are on about, there's a lip in the casting of the next cover heading frontward? I just removed that cover, it's only a few bolts as I was giving everything a clean up. The service manual doesn't mention anything about removing additional covers however and looking at my pic it would seem a socket should locate but I know pics can be deceiving!
Thank you so much for the prompt response. I have tried a socket and an open ended wrench and for the life of me I can’t get sufficient purchase on the pan bolt due to the lip you refer to. I believe I will remove the cover since your video makes it appear fairly straight forward. My next project is to replace the transmission mount, and your video is a godsend since the only other information I can find relates to the pre facelift ca
So enjoy your videos. I'm a hard modeller working at JLR in Gaydon on the all new 2024 Jaguar.
Wow now there's a skill. Please try to sneak some XJS lines into whatever new design you're working on haha
The starter motor uses the Bi hexagonal headed bolt at the top, because of access issues.

Alot of crass language, for a video on such a elegant and refined Car
