You have helped me so much to see what adopting a mustang is really like. I really admire your openness and honesty and how you share the frustrations as well as all your achievements, because it does seem like the two are intertwined when it comes to training a wild horse.
I'm so proud of you. You really have come so far with her, and it really shows how much you care about her to be able to make these tough decisions. Everything's a learning opportunity, and you will he able to apply all the things you learned with Zara to future mustangs. I can't wait to see how far Zara comes at the trainers!
It’s important to ask for help! I have a horse who was started by an amateur who didn’t seek out help when issues started to arise (bolting) and ended up dumping him, I have had him for a year now and it’s much harder to retrain a badly trained horse then start a new one. He is very well bred but for an unpapered horse a situation like his could have landed him in a much less resourced situation that wouldn’t be able to support all the help he has needed… it’s about what is good for the horse and ensuring they have enough education that they never end up in bad situations
I think the idea to do positive and negative reinforcement was a great one! They are both really important for a horse to learn!
This is an amazing video. I got my roping horse in 2001, and he was more horse than I needed. I went to 2 clinics with him, and we learned a lot but not what we needed. We then went to a trainer Karen Jones and the difference in training was amazing. He learned to hook up with me and be more respectful. He just turned 29 and is an awesome horse.
If there's anything I've learned in my own horse behavior studies, it's that a healthy mix of +R and -R has worked best. -R works really well for some signals and to help horses stay calm in stressful situations and +R makes for interaction being a pleasant and fun experience while learning new things.
It's difficult making these kinds of decisions. Good on you for moving forward and being open minded enough to look at things from multiple points of view. 💖
What you wrote about how R+ and R- both work for you and your horses for different things at different times validates what I have found too.
This is exactly what I was going to say but I couldn't quite figure out how to put it into words. I believe there have also been studies done that claim most horses retain information better through -R, but +R is so much more relaxed and fun. The perfect mix allows your horse to retain information better while also enjoying the training.
@@evawolflord it’s good to hear that as that is what I have evolved into after doing all R- for years, then switching to all R+. Now I use a blend. I also believe that our human personalities make a huge difference whichever one we use. For me and my talent level and personality, using both is best for me and my horse.
This is exactly the conclusion I've come to with R+ and R- training pretty much across every species. Very well said.
I am new to horse training as well. When Zara finally stopped running, she was also learning to calm herself. You did a great job trying to prepare her, even if there was a bigger reaction than expected. I saw her thinking and relaxing and licking and chewing. My suggestion would have been to quietly approach and reward her stopping with picking up the rope again. If there was another reaction, I do not think it would last long and you may have seen her think her way through it much faster. I really admire the way you put it all out there for everyone to learn from what you have done. Thank you so much for your videos!
I just want to say that your videos and being able to watch the progress you've made has been incredibly inspirational! I got my first straight off the track ottb last year and things have been moving incredibly slowly. Watching you and seeing the all the progress you've made keeps reminding me that everybody's journey is different, and slow progress doesn't mean no progress. I am throughly impressed with everything you've done with all of your horses! Thank you for sharing your journey (suceesses and struggles both)!
I really think its incredible that Zara got right in behind you. That truly shows she really trusts you. She trusted you enough to climb into a big scary trailer, without any issues. Awesome content! I love watching your horse journey!
I like that you mentioned that not all training methods for all horses. People are really quick to say “oh positive reinforcement is the best” or “negative reinforcement is the only way to train a horse” when neither of those methods work for all horses. I think its good that your showing that your adjusting your plans and training to fit your horse rather than expecting your horse to fit your training, because a lot of trainers do that.

From what I have learned is that before you start teaching a horse how to lead or be lunged, you should be able to get a halter and lead rope on them, but then just leave the halter and lead on and go do other things outside. Because then the horse will end up teaching its self how to respond to pressure.
And with the whole R+ thing, I have never used only R+ on a horse. I use a healthy mix between positive and negitive. So that the horses know where the line is, and can still be progressing and learning.
Mustangs just take a little time! They will get there eventually!

Oh, and I have also had a great experience mixing negative and positive reinforcement with my young horse. Every horse is an individual!

Girl, you can totally compare it to being a Mom! I'm a mom and a horse mom, training horses teaches me a lot about raising kids and vice versa. And I understand letting go of your "ideal" plan with your mustang. I've had to do the same with mine in so many ways. But it's so worth it! Keep at it! I love this quote by Kristina Kuzmic "Be Stubborn and Flexible. Be stubborn about your purpose, your passion, your goal. Be flexible about the approach, the process the timeline."
I hope Zara will learn and like it there while she’s there and we will all miss her while she’s gone 😢❤

Sometimes being a trainer means doing what is best for the horse. You have definitely shown that you want what is best for your horses. That is what makes you awesome.

You put your horses needs first what could be more admirable? And it is so great you will be able to observe her training! I think just like people every horse learns differently. My favorite famous trainer Warwick Schiller will often take a step back to figure out what the problem horse he is working with needs rather than just use his preferred training methods. Negative reinforcement has it's place and doesn't need to involve pain.
It’s totally fine for her to run around with the rope dragging. It helps to show them it’s nothing to be scared of. Sometimes they will freeze but you just need to run them so they keep moving till they understand.
Zara followed you, got onto the trailer, waited for you and began to eat... BECAUSE of the training you e done. You've learned the best lesson...to do things better...and you have. Looking forward to future updates and your next mustang...the best horseman learn from being exposed to as many horses with different personalities and needs physically and mentally. Thank you for putting the horses needs above your own. Also, the best teaching method is the one that works for the animal and gives you more tools for the next one....making things easier for you and the horse....great job!

At some point in any horse's training their pressure point happens, That's why pressure and release is so important and taught as soon as possible even to foals in a gentle way. You have done wonderful

Your third Mustang, I forgot her name is where you can truly enjoy training. Chin up you have done wonderful,!! Your horse and you haven't gotten hurt and that's the most important thing. You are an amazing person. I understand these training fears that can creep into the brain. Today our girls show up. Mine is only partially TIP trained because I’m going to finish it. I want to be a trainer myself and I need to remind myself that it will all be ok and each day is another day for me to learn something. It’s going to be so hard some days. Seeing your journey gives me courage and hope in my journey. Thank you for being you and for all the great videos. Thank you for taking us on your journey too.

I think that you’re doing a great job and made the right decision. My personal horse is a rescue who was beaten and would attack people. When I first got her she was the definition of dangerous. She would flip over at the slightest pressure and was an absolute menace to society. Using a combination of mostly negative reinforcement and some positive reinforcement I have retrained her to be a safe and successful ranch show horse. The point of this is horses can overcome anything and I think your making the right decision balancing out the positive and negative to get an amazing result. Good luck with Zara!
The way she stepped right in and waited patiently for you to hang up the hay net shows that you have definitely not broken her trust. She still very clearly trusts and respects you. I know you have had many setbacks with her but you really are doing great! I can't wait to see the progress both you and Zara make with this trainer. I am sure you two are going to learn so much together!

Zara loaded better than a lot of "fully trained" domestic horses I've seen.. Seriously impressive! And I love that you do whatever you need to for each of your horses - can't wait to see what you get up to with Zara in the future! :D
I so admire your honestly and openness regarding your journey with Zara. You've done so incredibly well and you are doing the absolute best for her. Every horse is different and some need extra/amended training methods to bring their education forward. My mare (als chestnut, pictured in our profile) is not food motivated at all. I will use it for putting her bridle on as I do not want to force the bit in her mouth. I may also use it for catching but not all the time. She is incredibly sensitive and responds best to pressure and release. She continues to teach me to this day about the ebb and flow of training. I've had her now 12 years and every day is different. I also take note of how she's feeling and would adapt our time together. Some days she is spooky as hell and very flighty, so I wouldn't ride that day, I may just brush her and if she walks off I leave her to it. Other days she comes up to me like hey mum, what can we do together. You are building a foundation for your relationship and the fact that you are putting your pride aside (which is incredibly hard!) Is admirable and Zara appreciates that. I look forward to her next update, all the best on your next steps both of you!

There is nothing wrong getting help and having a professional work with your horse. I’m picking my horse up from the trainers on the 18th! There was just some stuff I didn’t know how to do and we were both getting frustrated and being frustrated is okay, but not fair to a confused horse. You are doing great!

Hey, i just wanted to mention that a good farrier can actually do a lot for hoofs even if the horse cant lift it for them. Its not perfect ofcourse but better than nothing.

You're allowed to compare your feeling to being a mom who has dropped their child off if you want, haha. People gate-keep the weirdest things!!! I know that feeling when I drop my dog off at the vet; like, man, I miss my kiddo. I hope they're ok! It's all love, plain and simple. I think you did amazing with Zara, your patience and kindness are outstanding. Great job doing everything within your power, and then realizing that perhaps some things are out of your power. Putting aside your personal ego can be incredibly hard to do in any capacity, so being able to do so for the betterment of something or someone else is a terrific feat!
This video was somehow really touching to me. My gelding is a seven year old rescue who went to two different trainers before I got him. Both of them gave him up, saying he could never be a riding horse. I began riding him bareback with just a halter and a lead rope and everything was going well until I began to ride him with tack a few weeks ago. When I was lunging him the saddle got loose and slid under his belly. When I got on for the first time after that he bucked me off, and even if I get on without a saddle now he's uncomfortable and bolts every time I shift my weight. When I worked with him yesterday it felt like it was a bit better but it's frustrating to take such a big step back. I don't have the possibility to consult a professional trainer so we just have to work through that somehow. When I watched the video I felt less "alone". He's just like Zara scared of everything new but a pro with the things he's already learned. I love that pony so much!
I hope Zara will be able to get the vet care and hoof care she needs soon!

Sam Vanfleet also uses positive reinforcement and i watch her. she is really good with horses, and watching her work with them has helped me some. I am training/breaking my horse. I'm 14 and so hopefully i'll be really good at training horses when i''m older cause i want to be a horse trainer.

This is so cool to see someone who shows what it is really like training a mustang ( I have no idea I am just a 10 year old with un horsie parents having a ride on my big sisters horse every now and again waiting to find me and my sister's shared pony or cheep riding lessons)
But just a question is zinfindale ( idk how to spell it sorry) going to learn to be under saddle by that trainer or what's the plan.

Ha no I'm a mom and my animals are just like my kiddos. Same feelings. You just go through stages faster with animals!
She reminded me of my cats. xD
Last month one of my cats (which is blind to make things more difficult) went inside the paper bag and got the bag holder around her neck and then started speeding around the house, which then scared the other cat who started running around as if the devil itself was chasing them. Luckily, cats are small, so you can just grab them and help.
Horses learn from pressure
Watch them in a herd. They don't get treats and warm fuzzys from the herd. Not even the babies. They don't walk around with a bag of treats! They are looking for leadership not friendship. Being a friend to a horse is being their leader. So they don't have to fear all the scary stuff. With you being leader, they know you got this. Good luck to you.
