Chelseas away following was one of the best in Britian. Thats why we got bad press because of all numbers. 1983-84 championship decider Grimsby v Chelsea sell out 13,000 and 10,000 was Chelsea. Away following was unreal back then.
Only thing I recall about Cardiff at SB in 83/84 was them jeering through the minute silence for the young Chelsea lad killed at Huddersfield a few weeks before. Only one lot humiliated the other and on more than one occasion between these two.

Chelsea done the business in those days because of the huge numbers they took away. If you got them on even terms they wernt all that... Me and 2 mates ran on to the platform at Wimbledon after John Hollins testimonial there was 50/60 Chelsea we shouted 'Arsenal' and they scattered, we knew most of them as we were locals so it all ended having a laugh. We never let the fuckers live it down though lol
The Shed was only properly taken by West Ham once. In '78. By that, I mean getting in there mob handed and staying put. Running in, throwing a few haymakers then scarpering just as quick doesn't count or else Chelsea could claim they took the Stretford End in '84. West ham got run at Victoria after the 84/85 game at Upton Park. They also got ambushed at Parsons Green coming back from Wimbledon the same season. Don't get me wrong, West Ham were the best organised firm about. Chelsea had the numbers but they weren't tight enough at times and things got out of hand. Scared of Millwall? To the best of my knowledge, only two mobs have ever had a pop at the Cold Blow Lane End. West Ham for the Harry Cripps testimonial and Chelsea early in the 76-77 season. Never had nearly enough the numbers on that occasion but they got respect for trying it on. Of course Millwall went on a revenge mission and came in The Shed for the return game. Babs and his boys turfed them out. The last time we played Millwall, two of their pubs got attacked over there and in the home game, it was Chelsea on the pitch, not them. Arsenal had a top mob in the late 60's/ early 70's with Johnny Hoy. They were decent enough again in the mid '80's with Denton.
West Ham went over to Victoria well before the game in '85 but Chelsea were already on their way to UP. We got held in after the game so it was obvious that they would try again. Train went non stop until Embankment. Everyone was expecting it to be ambushed. When it got to St James Park, most of the train emptied out and headed down Victoria St. Plod were arriving from all directions and a load got blocked outside the Army & Navy Store. But plenty had got past. Everybody was running towards Victoria before they got stopped too so me and my mate couldn't catch up with the fella's who had got out of the station first. By the time we got to the rear of Shakies, West ham were bolting and jumping the fences into Grosvenor Gardens. We had to dive into the covered walkway to avoid the riot police charging back up Victoria St. This fella next to us was shitting himself and say's 'There's fucking Chelsea everywhere'. He wanted out so we let him be and plod was clumping anyone in their way. I've always taken the view that there is no disgrace in getting turned over. The real disdain is for those who were no-shows. Yes, Chelsea was very much about the huge numbers we'd take away to the northern and midlands city's. One of the first pithed battles I remember as youngster going to matches up north was on Warwick Rd outside Old Trafford in '78 The mancs said Chelsea were the first London club to take it to them when the Red Army were more used to swamping home clubs. Chelsea in fact did fill the South Bank in 85/86 aside from a load of coppers separating them from the Chicken Run. Chelsea also took a handy mob over to UP in 80/81. That was some of the worst aggro I've ever seen. Loads from both clubs got locked out and it was mayhem inside and out.
