I researched for MONTHS before building my pc, I’m glad you’re helping others as you’ve helped me, even if it wasn’t direct. Huge help when the big creators who are, frankly, masters of their craft, give their 2 cents.
I also researched for months before building my pc (roughly a year) and now I help out others on reddit!
@@HerpaDerp-ht8hySame here. This year I have helped my friend configure and build his pc and he's asked me why was I configuring my pc for so long when we were able to configure his in like 2 months.
Same, and also used multiple sources to cross check and kind of average out reviews. Jay is still one of my favorites to listen to, even after my build's been running smooth for over a year.
Same here, researched for months each time I wanted to build a new PC, which is a bit over the top but I was genuinely interested which helped a lot.
It also kinda ''sucks'' that each new year you have to update your knowledge when it comes to PC parts and compatibility, but you have sites such as PC partpicker which helps a LOT when it comes to compatibility.

6 months ago, i was too scared to touch a single part in my pre-built PC. Now, thanks to Jay and redditors alike, i have built two PCs (one for me and one for my gf) in a single month, both posted first try too! Dont be afraid to ask questions, 90% of the time, somebody has run into the exact same issue and you can typically troubleshoot any hurdle that comes your way ❤
One thing I'd like to add on the topic of adding a second M.2 Drive is that depending on which M.2 port you put it in (which is also dependent on which exact motherboard you use), you may disable some of your sata ports. To my knowledge this is only a problem if your motherboard has 6 or more sata ports, so lower end boards that will generally have only 4 or a few higher ends that also only have 4 for some reason shouldn't be impacted by this. With that said, check your motherboard's manual to be sure (sometimes this kind of information is also listed in the specs tab of a product page when you buy from an online seller).

It may also disable your secondary PCIx16 slot or make it a x8. Or in some instanses, make your primary PCIx16 a x8 slot.
The computer (i built on a budget) that i'm typing this from Had 4 SATA slots. the second m2 took up one of those slots. So i know that's true.
The correct answer always starts with RTFM.
Another potential issue to keep in mind, some ASRock motherboards have secondary M.2 slots at x2 instead at x4 PCIe lanes
I just built a new machine and it took me forever to find a suitable mobo on which the M.2 slots didn't interfere with the PCIe slots as I run three M.2 SSDs and need the additional PCIe slots for a NIC.

I built my PC for the first time this month largely in part thanks to how welcoming you make the process look and feel. I appreciate the more numbers oriented channels and watch them too now to learn, but yours breaks things down into more understandable chunks. Was able to look up other videos I needed because of it. I was able to pick up a used Spectre 3 and am going to do my own themed build as my first PC build. Recently retired engineer so we’ll see how much trouble I get into. Just built my first pc and thanks to you and a couple other UA-camrs it went so smooth. Also your software side video in setting everything up without internet saved my ass so thank you. Maxing out my monitors frames at 190 at 1440p on ultra settings for red dead redemption 2 feels amazing. So does 200+ for Warzone. I’m in love ha

8.20 or so, of course wow thanks for that man, I just bought a third drive a 4tb gen 4 as I was filling up my other m.2 drive, didn't realise I could switch out the one with the OS, thought windows would recognise the first drive as the OS one, thanks man 👍🏻

I’m glad you touched on the bell notification subject. For a month now, every single freaking upload I never got a notification for and I have to turn the bell back on. Luckily I consistently watch you so you’re always in my recommended but if I was to watch multiple people then I would miss uploads.. frustrating

Yessss thankssssssss!!!! Finally bout everything I need besides a screwdriver but mannnnn it's so expensive and so much fun but for a 3000$ build I want to leverage EVERY OUNCE. And mannnn I'm a noob. 5 years between my first build and now I got Corsair link planned out and a massive case and some beautiful am5 hardware but screw future proofing and screw fomo for buying "too early". Praying I manage the proper fps and finally play good games let's goooooo
My last rig had the ASRock X370 Tai Chi. I had, I believe, a Gen 1 NVMe and an M.2 SATA drive. The top slot was compatible with only the SATA. The NVMe drive had to be in the second slot. I learned this after installing it the way I had assumed it would work and then had to drain the system and disassembly. This is why you all should assemble and test your parts outside the chassis. It makes it worth having a spare air cooler around just for this. Either way, lesson here regarding the M.2 drives is always check the motherboard's manual to see which slots are compatible with what drives....then of course assemble and test outside the chassis.
I like to think I'm not a beginner, and I learned a ton. Keep doing these!
Video idea: One thing I was struggling with at the beginning was what is a reliable source of info.
A comparison of the info/advice you can expect on reddit, discord, manufacturer forum or Google. Ideally for beginner & advanced questions. We could vote on which questions.
I suppose some advice on where to look & how to decide/check the info would be good, but not as entertaining.
This is a nice series. I would like to see it continue.

with the M.2 slots you also have to make sure if the secondary slot shares bandwidth with a PCIe slot and you're running an add-in card. You have to check if it will cancel anything out when plugging in a drive (sometimes SATA ports are disabled when you use a secondary M.2 slot).

I really love your channel J. A few years ago it wasn't my thing but I decided to build another gaming PC, even though I said I was never going to again. Anyways your channel seems focused on personal builders who want to spend between $1000 and $5000 which is 99% of people that build a gaming PC.

I wish someone could have answered a few questions I had regarding my laptop a short while ago, but instead I had to do first-hand research as the information I wanted wasn't documented anywhere online, and I ended up spending a fair bit of time and money on what became a somewhat complex project.

My thoughts are that if you are building a new pc you must to your research before buying parts. Like does your motherboard bios work with your cpu without needing to update bios. Power supply suitable for graphics card and cpu. Watch videos like this one. So much to learn before buying parts for your self build pc. What games do you want your pc to be able to play well? Monitors suitable for you pc need to researched.

I'm running XMP on four 16gb sticks with my 1700x, feels good man. The USB/static thing...The person needs to get a plug tester to make certain his A/C outlet is really grounded.
I still have an i3-3220 with a gtx260 in it. Plays Q3 like a champ!

When you're going over the two sticks of ram versus four sticks of ram thing make sure to also include motherboards with only two RAM slots. My Asus Crosshair Impact VII cannot run two sticks with D.O.C.P., but it can run one stick with D.O.C.P.

Happy Holidays! Another important point to consider when installing a M.2 drive in the top slot of some MB's (ex. Asus Extreme boards), you end up running your GPU at 8X rather than 16X. In that case, what would you do? 1. Install the OS drive in the top slot and run your GPU at 8X or 2. Install your OS Drive through the Chipset and run your GPU at full 16X.
I populated all 3 bottom nvme slots and left the top slot open. Run all nvme's through the chipset. The top lanes are pcie 5 though and even though they say 8 pcie 5 lanes are the same as 16 pcie 4 slots I do not trust it. I believe there is a video showing a few frame difference, I don't know if this is true or not, but I didn't want to take the chance. There is enough pcie 4 lanes off the chipset as long as your using pcie 4 nvme's
@hilalfr That's is a intel problem. You would never come across that with a AMD MB. I would run PCIe16x8 and the OS SSD direct to the CPU.
@@claysmurthwaite2386 gen5x8 is the exact same bandwith as gen4x16. BUT, you will not get gen5x8. Every singe GPU on the marked is gen4 only. So you vill get gen4x8. you might loose a couple of FPS if you run a 4080 or 4090 or someting around there. But otherwise, you will never se any difference between gen4x8 and gen4x16.

Regarding M.2 ports:-
it's also worth noting that on some boards (using X470 as an example), using the second M.2 port with a SATA M.2 can disable a SATA port (1 or 6 typically) and using a PCIe M.2 can disable a PCIe port (typically the last or X4 slot).
So absolutely always check the detail specification on the manufacturer's website for that specific board, or manual. 😊
also depends on the manufacturer. Gigabyte tends to disable two SATA ports and Asus tends to disable or limit PCIe Connections.
@@Bllfrnd Asus tend to dissable 2 sata ports when the board have 6 Sata ports, and dissable a PCIe slot it the board only have 4 Sata ports. My b550 dissable 2 of 6 Sata ports for the second M.2. My B650 dissable a PCIe slot when the third M.2 is installed. Some boards also makes the first PCIe slot a x8 slot if M.2 nr2 and/or nr3 is installed (typically when all slots are gen4)

On the monitor 1440p monitor part I ran a 32” 1440p 165hz and it was fantastic. With a 3070 I was playing rust, ark (ASE), and MW2.

A couple of actually useful tidbits here, at least for me. We know on DDR4, that dual channel beats out single, for the same capacity, but didn't realise the potential problems going quad-stick, in terms of XMP & overall speed. Also the way Asus boards manage 2nd row M.2 connections. Thanks Jay.
I had a 2070 replace a r9 280 paired with just a 4770K and it was a life changer even then.

Dude I'm at work watching this.. You nearly got me caught friggin laughing my ass on the floot
on the static thing - if you have a lot of static in your environment that can definitely cause problems. I live in an extremely dry place and house is mostly carpeted floors. Before getting an in-room humidifier and keeping relative humidity around 45% with temp around 72 F, humidity would often be in the teens and I've killed several USB ports from static shock when plugging in devices. I've seen the shock reboot the system a few times when it was strong enough.
The fractal case is likely grounded and capacitance is completing the power/reset button. Current motherboard have voltage protection in the usbs.
Not a motivational quote but a general reminder.

Love them and it’s really helpful just to hear simple questions with direct answers sometimes instead of just the attitude on some channels that it’s beneath them or something for people to ask them about things refresh rates. 2:46 its like car traffic, instead of having 2 lanes for entry and exit its more efficient to have 2 lanes for entry and 2 for exit if that makes sense

I think the best way to learn about PC building, or really anything in general, is just do research. That may seem obvious, but it's true. Yes, it's nice to have people help with specific subjects, but usually one can learn a lot quicker utilizing their own time, learning from others who have asked the same thing before you and build upon that. That's just my opinion though. Happy new year fellers
yes keep doing videos like this coming, ive been bulding my own systems since the 80 s , there is always some thing to learn .
I did buy a far overpowered GPU before for my system and people were confused until I mentioned that I was saving up for a mobo+CPU+RAM combo for later, and the GPU upgrade at the time probably gave me the most boost.
After the mobo+CPU+RAM upgrade, the games I played turned out to only have a mild to moderate bump.
Thing you forgot about Jay with the m.2 question. The m.2 shots are different when it comes to the amd B & X 400 & 500 series boards. The 400 X series boards have 2 gen3 ports, but the B series boards only have one of each. And with the 500 series boards, the X has two gen 4 slots, and the B has one gen 4&one gen 3 slot.
You may not see this, as shorts do not allow for comments. Your stuck item in the sound port could use a vacuum to suck it out. Possibly a magnet though I don't think the end is magnetic.
I love the 31days of techmas videos. Most UA-cam channels slow down their uploads for a week or two from just before Christmas.
Next year you should shoot a few of the 31 days if techmas during the year and then schedule them to go public during December.

2nd question: Not all home outlets have an earth ground. Depending on location, age of wiring job and who did the work when installing an outlet there may not be an earth ground on the third prong. I have a small inexpensive tester that you just plug into the outlet and it lets you know the status of every conductor of the outlet.

The speed gain in gen 4 over gen 3 is imo pointless with normal everyday use. Being able to read at 7000 mb/s and write at 5000 mb/s almost never comes up in daily use(gaming,youtube and similar), I wish I got the 1Tb nvme gen 3 over the 512 gb gen 4 (both WD black) as both cost exactly the same at the time (2 years ago). I found that the highest benchmark speed do verry little in overall system performance and the extra storage room would be a much better option if your budget is limited, what do you think?

First time builder here with ideas. Do a video on the ins and outs of different parts, surprise issues in building...
My Alphacool ST 20 radiators are so poorly manufactured, I can see why I haven't seen more builds using them. Screws are too short for 27mm fans, the screws are 28mm long, so I buy different screws and triple check the lengths! Threads on these supplied screws are very bad, no chamfered edge at the beginning of the threads. The threaded holes for the screws in the radiators have paint in them, never chased with a bottom tap...
Any veteran in any field has seen plenty of these types of issues, me, maybe just enough to work my way through this build. Tips man, just the tips!

I tried to post on this subreddit asking for parts advice 4-5 days ago, but I couldn't as I assume I didn't have enough karma. So I gave up and had to extensively research and just went with the parts. About 3 years thinking and researching into investing in PC building. Im halfway through two builds for me and the missus, all seems to be going OK. Xmas/boxing day has halted progress but back to it tomorrow. Sometimes you just have to commit and learn things for yourself 👍

1440p on 4k display looks just fine, depending on how far are you from the display (TV), it still has more detail than 1080p.
4k display is good in that regard. it contains like 3 720p, 2 1080p, 1.5 1440p images, it scales perfectly linearly or good enough.
million % better than 1080p picture on 1440p monitor anyway (1,3333 ratio)
I'd still always recommend having your OS drive in the slot using CPU lanes rather than chipset lanes, even if its slower than the slot's speed.
