Not only are these the items I include in my own portfolio, but after interviewing and hiring teachers for 8 years, it’s the thing I look for from applicants as well.

    This is by FAR the best video on how to build a teaching portfolio. I almost never comment on youtube videos, but I'm fresh out of graduate school filling out applications as a first year teacher and this was tremendously helpful! Thank you for the time you put into this video!

    Hi! Thank you so much for making this video!! Did you make a video breaking down the teaching resume? I checked here in the comments and searched your videos, didn't see one. THANK YOU!!

      Good catch! I haven’t made that video yet, but I probably should! Here are the sections I have on my single page resume: Contact Info, Profile (a brief overview of my qualifications), Education (degrees and certifications), Experience (work history with a few bullet points per position), and Professional Skills (a list with things like “Teacher Mentoring” and “Video Tutorial Creation” and “Engaging Lesson Design”). I hope that helps a little. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! 💕

    Thank you so much for your video! I will be using your suggestions to create a portfolio. I taught 2nd grade as a long-term substitute and loved it. Do you have any examples or suggestions for getting your resume to one page? I haven't taught in almost 3 years, but want to start applying for jobs again.

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting! And Yay to 2nd grade! 💗 Canva has a ton of really great resume templates that are only one page. You could follow the examples they show and fill in with your own info. But if you'd like to see the version I used for this video, please email me at info@thetimecrunchedteacher.com and I'll send you the pdf of the sample one I showed. It will give you the sample categories I used and show which basic info I included. Good luck on your applications! 🤗

    Hi Mariel - thank you for sharing your ideas on how us new to be teachers can get a job. I would love to hear your thoughts on what to include on resumes for those of us who have only done subbing as a teacher using an "Emergency Sub Teaching Cert" while finishing my master's program that will have my teacher's cert. Thank you!

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  10 місяців тому

      First of all, congrats on entering the field! Secondly, I think having experience as a sub is a HUGE asset when applying for teaching positions. Not only does it require you to be flexible and adapt to a variety of environments, but you have to do it with no time to prep! I think being a successful sub takes very strong classroom management, being quick on your feet, and being able to connect quickly with students who you haven't had much time building rapport with. Plus, I'm sure you have a lot of experience in working with a variety of ages and subjects. In your cover letter, you could definitely talk about what you love about certain age groups or subjects, and what you learned works the best for connecting with them. I think that exposure to different classroom environments also allows you to sample which aspects you want to include in your class someday and why you think those elements would be successful. Anyway, I hope that helps some and good luck! Please keep me posted on your future placement. 💗

    Very helpful, thank you! What documents would you recommend including for a first year teacher going through an alternative certification program? No classroom experience, and my program requires 15 hours of observation in various classroom so I have not spent a significant amount of time with any one teacher.

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  2 місяці тому +1

      Great question! I’d focus on your coursework and any feedback or reviews you’ve had. You can also include lessons you’ve created, even if they have just been for the program and not taught in the classroom yet. And if you can get any letters of rec, that would actually work to your benefit in this case. Hope that answers your question and is helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💕

      @@TheTimeCrunchedTeacher , I’m retired from full time work in schools, but I am currently an Orton-Gillingham tutor for 3 small groups (4 students in each) in grades 2, 3, and 4. It makes me very happy! I know why you love your 2nd graders. I did too when I taught kiddos in that grade. I also had the privilege of teaching 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at various times. Enjoy your holiday break❣️

    I know you said to leave it with them, but what if I have items I only have 1 of? Handwritten student letters, pictures, etc. I interview back to back this week and I do not have the time/money to make 4 different portfolios. Should I just make a second one with less stuff and leave the best one with the school I want to be hired by most?

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  Рік тому

      Great questions! When I create my portfolios, I make copies of all the documents contained within it. I don't include originals for anything (I'm too nervous something might happen to them). If you don't have time to make copies of your current portfolio, then I would just take it with you. You could also scan all the documents in your portfolio and create a folder in Google Drive with all of the images. That way, if they wanted to review an item you could just email it to them. Any portfolio is better than nothing! Even if it means you can't leave it with your interviewer. Good luck and thanks for your comment!

    I would love to see the feedback form you added at the end of your portfolio! :D Is there a video in which you talk about it?

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  11 місяців тому +1

      Oh great question! I haven't made a video yet, but maybe I should! Basically I created a sign that listed the teaching goals I was working on. Here is a sample of one: drive.google.com/file/d/1v-_iV8Iptry926KT8M_GyXBr8iHzlPWx/view?usp=sharing. I'd then put a QR code on it that linked to an anonymous Google Form. The form basically asked observers to rate me on my teaching goals using a simple scale. I also had an open section at the end that allowed them to leave anonymous written feedback. Additionally, I had paper forms printed out for anyone that wanted to fill one out and leave in an envelope on the door. There's lots of ways to do it though! If you search #ObserveMe you'll probably find lots of resources from a few years back. Good luck and please reach out if you have any more questions! Thanks for watching. ☺

    Is it okay to have copies of your teaching credentials for the portfolio rather than the originals? I'd hate to leave a portfolio with someone and not have it for other interviews or it potentially get lost

    • @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher
      @TheTimeCrunchedTeacher  2 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely! I only use copies for all of my portfolio documents. They won’t need the originals until you are hired.
