- Don't feel bad if you do these! I'd say 90% of players do at least one of these too much. Instead, practice getting rid of your bad habits, and before you know it, you'll be pro ;)

ROFL
+yorkiesandskittles LMAO This was funny as hell.
Fox’s dash attack is better than shine. Just ask kjh
#0: Not going to a tournament because you aren't good enough.
Fucking true. This mindset is bad. We all started somewhere!
Noobs who do this are going places, not college but places.
+Ephraim Robinson snedonsds
+Ephraim Robinson snedonsds
+Simna ibn Sind i have no reason to go to tournaments shut up...
the worst habit i have seen?
Dash attck...so...many...dash attacks ;-;
+Andreas Seifer YES
+Andreas Seifer This made me think of Alpha dicking on little macs lol
+Andreas Seifer Well.. Peach and Sheik got pretty decent ones.
+Andreas Seifer Mandatory option to chase people who run away if you don't have a ranged attack and aren't an extremely slow/heavy character.
Captain Meme also uses his to start up his air combo (that will be inevitably air dodged.), so there's that. If rolling wasn't so flawless, there'd be reason to not dash attack.
+Andreas Seifer peach main and I still struggle with this one myself >_>
Spam get up attack
agreed. this is no. 1 using get up attack every time on the ledge and 90% of the time on stage.
+Coach McGuirk and then condition your opponent by using a regular getup then KAUNTA!
This is so true. Not even just for Melee but for all smash games.
Worst habit? Accidentally doing an F-smash and holding it in hopes of the other player mistiming it.
Gets me bopped almost everytime.
+Munzu we all overcommit a little man. We all do it. *pats on back* There there.
+Munzu Not really a habit for me, but I sometimes do this and regret it everytime, should just throw the attack quickly and get out of there, holding just gives the enemy cruicial time to prepare and react to punish.
+Munzu just dont throw a fsmash in neutral at all unless youre doing a hard read on their rolls or something.
Brandon Garay part of the problem is that most of the times I don't even intend to do an f-smash so it's not really a bad habit. more of a frequent tech flub
+Munzu This is off-topic, but that icon is fucking amazing.
the worst habit I have seen is not picking Roy
thats the one that can take on any skilled fox, right?
When I played as Roy I was getting my ass kicked by a player called Dillon in melee
He had 4 stocks and I had 1 left and 40% damage and made the best reverse 4 stock ever finished the game with 258%
He was playing Fox who is his main and I don't even main Roy
Again, I'd like to remind people, Don't feel bad if you do these! I'd say 90% of players do at least one of these too much (I had the double jump problem for years). Instead, practice getting rid of your bad habits, and before you know it, you'll be pro ;)
+SSBM Tutorials My friend came over to play Melee today as I'm off to uni in a few days. He was always doing back airs off stage... with Pikachu. You know that amazing recovery he has? Fuck that. I'mma SD. I physically cringed...
vote for sora smash kingdom hearts.
+SSBM Tutorials Kira, can you please do a video on the best way to hold the controller for/practice fast and accurate dash dancing? I have a huge problem getting from one side of the gate to the other without either messing up my input or missing my dash away. Thank you! Love the videos!
there is no best way, just practice more
Thank you for the response! With arcade sticks, there are multiple ways to hold the controller and, when I first started playing traditional fighters, changing my grip really did improve my execution (tech skill?). Good to know I'm not missing anything here!
The reason lower level players shield grab a lot is because when they play other low or even mid level players, they can't do safe pressure. So when a player keeps playing their friend's fox that can't L cancel his nair shines, they frequently succeed in shield grabbing him and think (whether it's subconscious or not) "hey, that keeps working on fox so I'm gonna do that regularly."
This is a habit I've had to break myself and I just wanted to give some insight onto why players do that, because you couldn't understand why we would even choose this horrible option.
100% agreed - my first go to response to Falco shield pressure was shield grab because the players I was used to playing couldn't work around it. When I did meet a player who could suddenly I had to relearn what I knew of the matchup.
+JWinks This is my biggest weakness. Second to this is probably my tendency to tech (or getup attack) the same way if I'm not actively thinking about it
I'm glad I'm not the only one that struggles with this, ESPECIALLY against falco.
+JWinks thb I think people also do this because it's a one button move, it's the easiest out of shield punish option
Exactly, and for a lot of characters, you get so much out of throws
Focusing tech over fundamentals.
I see it mostly with people whose first time playing Melee was after EVO. I think it stems from a lack of familiarity or even comfort with the core mechanics.
+A Black Guy Talks About It's also much easier to practice tech by yourself than fundamentals.
+kered13 That's one of my main problems. I never have anyone to play due to my full schedule. So the only thing I can do is practice my tech. Needless to say when I actually do play against people, I don't do that well
+A Black Guy Talks About So true. So many people (noobs) know WAY more about frame data and tech skill than they do about very basic decision-making.
+Batman It's like what Hax$ said- we live in a time when people can multishine but can't even SHFFL
+Anderceus yeah dude that tweet was hilarious
Falcos who only approach with dair, especially running off a platform when it's clearly what you're trying to bait >_>
+Splendid This is a good one.
+Splendid This is me, luckily I don't main Falco though
Trust me, if Westballlz were truly brainless he wouldn't be a top player. Westballz does play very aggressively, but he varies his approach options and conditions his opponents.
+MegaFelicks Watch closely, he doesn't brainlessly approach. He's actually a genius. He baits out a lot of different moves, which is why he's famous for those "Westbawz up tilts"
+MegaFelicks you're high if you think Westballz is brainless
When they try really hard to style and they just end up killing themselves or saving the enemy.
+Gucci Gators westballz
indeed a fellow kid lol
Me lol
I refer to this as the "spaghetti"
My crew calls this one "the Madison" especially when it's a falco dair straight down into the blast zone.
I am now calling the jump buttons the grey peanut-shaped buttons
nope, call it the grey bean-shaped buttons
I thought that they look like dead kidneys
the worst habit I've seen is using falcon up special to try and escape combos
That's hilarious
Mango learn of him at genesis 4 vs Leffen I think
The worst habit I've seen is drug abuse...
Stay in school kids
One of the worst habits I see: Falcos who ONLY double laser from ledge and players who actually fall for it. Especially on stages with platforms. >_>
+Kitsune91 lol kitsune gud to see you here... as always
NGUY ayyy~ ;3
+Kitsune91 you mean mango lmaooo
Jason Palm Funny thing is I originally had that typed in my original comment as well as players who actually fall for it (Mango's opponents) but I deleted it because I didn't want people to get upset. lmao
lool
When people believe Kirby's, yoshi's, and bowser's down b is god like
bowser's and yoshi's are pretty good for ledge grabbing and combos though (bowser can't combo though)
And if you are a god kirbys is a pretty strong edge guard
character specific ones?
when im peach if i don't know what to do i press down on c stick lol
+Scratch Down smash for lyfe!
+Scratch MacDSmash
+Scratch MacD is that you???
+OfDaSouth MacDsmash
+Scratch somehow, that is perfectly ok....peach x_x
Falcon kick dive bombs from the top of the stage
Gotta love them
You forgot to add playing Brawl to the list.
More like, thinking Brawl has better mechanics than Melee.
-Fucking tripping-
+ProtoZero more like -fucking hitstun cancelling-
My friend thinks that Brawl is better than Melee... ;_;
FiZu Well, I guess some people just prefer the slower gameplay.
Hitstun cancelling is still stupid tho
ew gross
when someone attempts to style or constantly attempt to spike no matter what
My brothers sm4sh ganondorf in a nutshell...
Sadly it pays off from time to time...
it's sm4sh , all those mistakes apply to melee mostly , otherwise its just typical sm4sh pro level
David D That's the whole point of playing Ganondorf. If you're not disrespecting and swagging on your opponent with every move, you're doing it wrong.
Who else thought this was a GR Smash video at first?
lol I totally did
+Noah Hall (Mr. Potatobadger) well it is tagged with 'GRsmash'
+Noah Hall (Mr. Potatobadger) jajjaja thought it was a compilation of videos xD
Noah Hall I've never heard gr smash voice though
My worst habit as Marth is getting way too close. I sometimes don't think about spacing, and it usually results in me getting combo'ed into next week.
+Drewdaddy00 agreed. or i just get usmashed by fox and die
+Drewdaddy00 That's one of Marths specialties
My worst habit is watching porn whith the volume at max and the windows open... wait we weren't talking about that?
Not using the Knee
Ah dang it, I was feeling pretty good about myself until number one... I shield grab a ton. My OoS options generally go like this: 50% shield grab, 20% WD back, 20% roll, 10% aerial... In my defense marth has a stupidly good shield grab and my friends don't have good enough pressure to avoid it. Thanks for showing me what I should work on though!
i love the fact that on the "rolling is nooby" you put in armada getting rested by mango HAHAHA
+FallenHeartBeat ;)
I disagree on the standing still one.
Standing still can lead to some epic mind games.
Man, the "standing after a move" is the one that everybody does. Good job for the video!
I have the opposite problem of rolling too much... I never roll, I don't even use my shield so that's my main thing at the moment. Learning when to use the shield and when to roll and what to do after it to prevent being destroyed(as I always do)
How do you wavedash
check our "how to learn melee" playlist and click on the first "advanced how to play" video
I meant more in his case since he rarely shields
oh right lmao
i don't know how to grab properly so i just use shield button+ A and it functions just like regular grab
The real noob mistake here is using Comics Sans.
Lolll
thats the style of his videos and even melee in game has some comic sans text
Refreshing ledge invincibility at the worst times
+FriskyFatty its okay hbox, we still love you
In Smash 4 I often play as Lucario, and my friend as Toon Link. He does his down-air way too much, so naturally I counter with Double Team. He then proceeds to get really angry and claim that Lucario and Double Team are cheap, but doesn't pay attention when I tell him about his constant fuck-up.
Airdoging off stage to grab on the ledge. Even M2K has trouble with this sometimes. Easily countered by wavedashing backwards instead.
What
2RaB THE AHNIALATOR It's a tech mechanic that barely fucking works and most of the time anyone who tries it ends up loosing a stock. I can't really consider this a "Noob" mistake because even top players have trouble pulling it off.
In fact, M2K lost a match as a result.
+Hotsex spy I believe it happens to some high level players when they're trying to wavedash back but miss the timing and end up airdodging instead. I dont think i've ever seen anyone intentionally use air dodge to grab ledge
Everything in this list, with the exception of 5, isn't necessarily bad. Doing things repetitively and becoming predictable is bad, which is the message you should be trying to get across instead of saying "this is what noobs do..." because in the end of the day all the tools at your disposal are valuable. You just gotta know not to use a hammer to unscrew a nut.
+Mexi Serge You are 100% correct.
A habit that was crippling me for months that I eventually overcame recently was constantly trying to hit the enemy with pound to get back on stage. Yes, it is a great strategy, but if you use it too much it can become one of the worst.
kids that stay in place and only smash attack. aka smash 4 players play melee for the first time
Watch any decent player play smash 4...
+Tocinos whoa whoa whoa, watch it bro. they don't just smash attack from neutral. they smash attack and then run for 8 mins. get it right, Sm4sh 4 Lyfe.
When I went from smash 4 to melee I was rolled so much
+RockLobsta29 smash 4 will do that to you
+SSBM Tutorials preeeechhhh
+SSBM Tutorials wanna start something, m8?
Smash 4 and Brawl often encourage roll dodging, the very risky move in Melee. In Melee, roll dodging can get you bodied easily.
Haha, I should have this watched this video more before you came over and wrecked everyone at my house tourney. It was nice meeting you Kira! Good luck with your channel!
Worst habit I've seen? Playing Smash as though it were a competetive fighting game instead of actually having fun.
Worst habit I've seen? People criticizing others over the way they play the game
+A_DutchGamer I just looked up "preach." I don't get what you mean.
+A_DutchGamer umm... Thanks I guess
+movezig5 why not both. I know friends who just play casually and have fun. I also have friends who play competitively and they have fun. You can play how you want, its the competitive players who get criticized so they can improve.
My worst habit is thinking meteors will actually work.
Worst habit I've ever seen was playing brawl
Bruh...am I the only one that likes brawl?
+illogic 137 No, brawl is cool. Not my favorite, but I like it.
+StarBurritoTV Cool
+NumberThirteen #Trippingballs
"But I like brawl wah wah wah, where's my pacifier, brawl brawl brawl, waaaaaah"
What about always spotdodging on getup?
+Rongunshu truuuu
Rolling is my worst habit, i just cant help it. and no, i dont know how to wavedash properly
+teeman9266 lol same XD
+teeman9266 then you have a LONG way to go.
+TheSeizureProcedure
I'm sure 10 years of smash is just enough
10 years of smash =/= 10 years of competitive play. If you've been competitive for 10 years and you can't wavedash just give up.
you can be good at smash without wavedashing
Just starting to get into smash having no prior experience with Nintendo. Struggling against level 5 CPU’s can’t help but get angry and my game gets worse
My friend Robm presses L to tech when he sees his opponent(s) fall
For a lot of newcomers those last 2 actually probably stem from habit from Smash 4. They're problems I have as well.
my worsy habit is using f-air as fox instead of n-air
sammmeeee
Fair, a viable move in every situation
I love the sarcasm in this one! You should do more of these videos with personality.
Marth fsmash spam. Those were the days...
Any character: spamming either the biggest ranged attack, the widest aoe attack, or the quickest attack without ever changing, even when it doesn't work.Little Mac: Starting the fight with a dash attack.Kirby: Spamming jump + default down special.
worst habit is not maining fox #20XX
I'm glad to see the channel is growing well.
+Givsaro I remember you!
The biggest mistake of all is underestimating your opponent. It's better to go into a battle expecting to lose rather then win. Because If you go into a battle expecting to fourstock, you don't try as hard, and if you GET fourstocked you'll be pissed, and then you will watch the salt consume you, and if you DO fourstock, you'll just be like, "Oh okay then." If you go into a battle expecting to get fourstiocked, you try harder, and if you do get foursticked, instead of being mcsalterton, you're just like "Okay, too bad." also if you DO fourstock you'll be like Etika's smash 4 dlc reaction "YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!" And that's better for both you and your opponent. A wise man once said "Salt decreases the body and spirit, and without it, the body and spirit increase." IN general, the biggest noob mistake (and pro mistake, I've seen this before) is underestimating your opponent/going into a battle expecting to win.
It can make you kind of a jerk though. I main ice climbers. I've overestimated opponents before, and ended up wobbling them every stock. That ain't fun for no one.
Totally true 100% with you on that.
at the same time though It's not hard to resist wobbling with ice climbers just think to yourself "If I wobble this stock, I will be trashtalked to the point where I won't want to wobble anymore, and I won't feel good about that. i understand that my inner troll wants to be free, but I have to resist the temptation." This is a huge setback for Ics mains beacuse they can't decide if they want to wobble or not. It's like back in the day when I mained Kirby in every smash game EVER and I used to be the most trolliest player EVER. I learned that there is more to kirby then just troll. Bair is a great kill move, fair can combo into dair, nair and Up air. upair works like pikachu's , (which is one of the better Up airs in the game,) nair is a great stage spike, Side b is damaging on ground and can Surprisingly wrack up some Okay damage in air if used with the right time and spacing. Dair is a good multi-use small spike for gimps and combos into swallowcide, backthrow, fthrow, upthrow, and downthrow are all good, and kirby has one of the BEST recoveries in the game.
my worst habit, is attempting to beat Luigi in a neutral air battle...
I went to a tournament and this girl play as Kirby always went up and down B'd ALWAYS, and I saw her playing other people and winning so I played her and falcon punched her 5 times in 2 games
How the fuck was she winning? How bad were her enemies XD
+BumiBomber !!! Probably just a casual tournament
Here's my bad habit: Sometimes, I get this weird feeling, and I just stop playing for like, 5 seconds or so.
Biggest noob mistake?
Trying to main a character in Melee not named Fox, Falco, Sheik, Jiggs, Peach or Marth.
#PMFTW #BALANCEDCAST
+nahor88
Whats wrong with Falco? I couldnt handle fox so.....why not switch to the easier main?
i Love the Bird ...he is the best charakter in my opinion and he has so much style :D
+nahor88 You can do well with pichu at a low level, any way more characters =/= better game
+nahor88 ICs can do rad stuff. Ness can be huuuuge.
i feel like melee characters have to be discovered. I'm maining pikachu and everybody sais "man switch to fox, pikachu is just a bad fox" they don't get the fact that every character has something to offer, but mewtoo
As grounded Falcon, jump > double jump > fast fall > early down-air on shield vs Sheik... 11 times in a row
This video was honestly a little condescending imo. Good tips, but could have done without the "nooblets and scrublords" thing. I have a lot of friends who would benefit from these tips, but instead of showing this video, I'll just tell them in person, so they don't get discouraged.
I'm teaching a few new players who have never played melee before. Literally every single time they miss a tech near the ledge, I wavedash back and charge up-smash. Eventually you would think they would want to not take a backflip bicycle kick to the jaw (and also losing their souls to my library), yet it's been like 3 months and everyone still does it.
Feels bad man; it's got to the point I say out loud "DON'T DO IT" as soon as they miss the tech and they still do.
biggest noob mistake? playing melee not for fun
Hey I'm in here at the end :,) I did learn my lesson about shield grabbing too much. I guess it stems from getting practice on people who can't pressure properly.
Being too aggressive and spamming aerial approaches. I guess people are too eager to start cool combos that they forget how to start them
By far, the biggest mistake I've seen noobs make is to put the disk in the console instead of throwing it into the trash, where it belongs
the fucking comments...everyones a pro i guess?
nah everyone who starts getting better at melee automatically becomes an elitist douchebag - that is the worst fucking habit of all time.
+Chris Szczech fuck you
+KranKDaT exhibit A of "elitist douchebag" please, no flash photography.
lol i was kidding
6) Using powerful attacks that are harder to hit (smash attack over forward air)
Number 0: putting the SSBM disc in your system and playing it at all.
lmao both of you guys got soo much hate
zomgpirate You're not original
worst habit i've ever seen: there's a high rank player in florida i think... he mains some stupid character called 'Jigglypuff'
+SGN Zyko (ZyKoTiik) what an awful habit
+SGN Zyko (ZyKoTiik) I have encountered that Habit alot before.
*_-That isn't a habit-_*
Bullshit. One of the best overall characters in Smash Bros so I don't know why you think just because she is terrible in the main Pokemon games means you can shit on her in Smash. She's #5 on the current SSBM list and she still holds up easily in dominating air game and all. Please think before you post something next time. :)
Stephen StephenLovesJiggly lol it was a joke. Jiggly is good on the tier list, I just don't like playing against her
+SGN Zyko (ZyKoTiik) Who likes playing against Jiggly?
What other options do I have as Marth when getting shield pressured?
+Jesus Gomez Attack out of shield (many choices of attack there), wavedash out of shield, lightshield, jump, roll at a less predictable time
+Jesus Gomez Dolphin Slash out of shield is pretty good if you have a platform above you to land on. Other than that, wavedashing is generally your best bet, rolling works but it'll get punished unless they're just completely not ready for it.
The best counter to shield pressure is to avoid getting stuck in shield though.
down air. don't mess up the shffl and don't over use it and it's golden. other than that wave dash and roll are your other options, sometimes nair and fair.
Quit the game. That's what I do.
+Seiteku [] Nate lmao what did i just read
Here's one: mindlessly showing off tech skill at high percent after taking a stock.
"Hell yeah, look at me, I can SHFFL, dash-dance, edge-cancel, waveda--" (quick hit -> KO)
"Oh yeah, they're invincible when they come back."
pivot grab and jump cancel tutorial
Please!
jump any z
The biggest noob move?
The uncomfortable feeling that keeps coming back no matter how much you talk to people and play them at tournaments.
The epic skill to never be able to make friends who you can practice with even after 2 years of going to tourneys.
Another big noob move is to play only as fox and practice all kinds of things by yourself and get your hopes up to maybe win one game at your next local toruney, then losing to people you haven't seen before.
Sheik neutal game part, sheik overview or how to get around falco's lasers. Please.
+Polari Moon ppmd has a lot about this on smashboards and maybe even on youtube somewhere.
Mark SKC Rly? Thanks.
Also one more quick thing I'd like to add that not many people do: It's okay to check other character's boards on smashboards ;) All the info's there for the taking and a lot of the time they post about how they have trouble dealing with certain things in certain matchups. I know fox and falco boards always have threads that talk about how they can't handle other space animals due to falco lasers/camping foxes and then the more experienced players tell them the way to deal with it.
You should do another 5, noobs will gain a lot from these. Some ideas:
- On top of always tech in place/roll in, if they are in knockdown always getup attacking
- Always ledge getup attacking, or more advanced - ledgehop dair
- Always dairing when falling down
- Approaching without thinking and spacing
- DI'ing in when being comboed
- Samus mains especially; always CCing even when it wont work or is being repeated baited
- Spamming the attack until it works, most often dsmash which ends up as a dair offstage
- Throwing out their strongest move whenever given room to breathe (marth fsmash/peach dsmash)
- Having a very basic movement pattern like dash dance once into approach always
There are hundreds of character specific things u can talk about too. I think having a notable player like yourself spoonfeed it to them, will make noobs really take this advice on board.
Forever = 1 frame.
K
Shield grabbing actually has lot of good uses/punishes. Punishing ending lag of shielded ground attacks, ending lag of get up attacks, regular get up ending lag, ledge get up attacks ending lag, ending roll/spot dodge lag, ledge roll ending lag if you want to try throwing offstage for edge guard/gimp oppurtunity or if they're at low % then a combo or chain throw obviously, etc. It can also be of greater use than regular grab for the tether characters, as it can bring them a higher chance of successfully getting grabs (more specifically when used in the above situations), and not getting punished during the ending lag animation of missing a grab.
+Auryn Santayana this is not true. shield grabbing is a horrible option against shield pressure and just in general. its really laggy. however i do agree with you on the get up attack on both stage and ledge
Comment wars happen when somebody mentions Melee's broken engine. Whoops, did I say that out loud? It's better than the first game's but I find it very overshadowed by the far more balanced Smash 4 (Brawl was too slow and Melee was too fast).There. w8 4 teh h8
That's actually true
don't hate on facts
***** I can understand the adaptability to a specific game engine and why people stick to specific games in a fair and unbiased world and what each of the games have advantages in.
Smash 1: The original and creator. A trip down memory lane. While I love this gem, it hasn't aged very well, and the flaws are VERY apparent in this game. That doesn't mean I won't play it from time to time, though.
Melee: Hyper Offense. Usually, the one that starts a combo is the one that finishes it, hence why characters like Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon, Marth, and Roy are relatively popular. Let's be honest, though. This offensive bias and the few flaws left in the game is what draws me away. Played this game for years and I still think it's clunky--not as much as the first game, but still quite clunky. Can I play a decent Melee? I guess so. I'd rather not, personally. The worst part about this is that there are diehards that will "defend" this game and send death threats to Sakurai for making two more sequels that "ruined the already perfect engine", when in reality Sakurai regrets making this game in its entirety. All I can say is, so long as Pichu is nowhere to be found, I could care less for either the love or hate side. I like the game.
As far as options go as you mentioned, I will not lie: you're correct. To play Melee, it requires a ridiculous amount of skill and know-how of every possible combo option and move-reading in order to actually be pretty good at it. I actually have respect for people that can play this game well and NOT downtalk the other games like degenerates (I was on the opposite end of the spectrum at one point). All in all, for those that actually avidly play this game more than the others, have at it. For those that decide they want to bash Smash 4 for no reason whatsoever other than "Sakurai must die" and "It's not Melee", you're not stopping me from playing it...also, you might need counselling for your violent outbursts. Wanting someone that hasn't done any actual harm to another human being to die is...just no.
Brawl: Hyper...Defense? Yeah, the speed is definitely slowed down here. Not quite Smash 1 levels, but it's a noticeable drop. Whenever people complain that Melee was too broken because its engine bias, I always mention Meta Knight in Brawl as a debunk because, and I'm just going to be honest here, he's more broken than anything in the rest of the series. The random tripping is absolutely irritating as well, so I can't really love this game as much as I'd want. Was it fun? Sure was. Solid Snake in Smash? More, please!
Project M: I understand the "why" of it and how it succeeded with removing the clunkiness of Melee, but the people behind it are so full of themselves that they bring out the worst of the "Melee Elitists" as everyone else calls them. Once again, I find Melee too Hyper Offensive for my tastes, but I can still stomach a good round from time to time. With this, it's actually harder considering that most anybody behind this badmouths Brawl any second they can. It's actually kind of sad, really. All the cool easter eggs and mods that can be combined with this are fantastic, but knowing that the basis of Project M is made by a group of ignorant people is...heartbreaking, and I think that there are unnecessary changes to characters that would've been fine otherwise.
Smash 4: FINALLY! The perfect balance! And look: Mewtwo was made better (but don't tell a Melee Elitist I said this or they'll flame me for liking a game more than Melee), the engine is a combination of the general engine of Brawl with a speed boost like Melee, but maintaining a more balanced speed, buffs and nerfs were implemented that needed to happen, and the game itself plays much better than any addition before it. It feels...right to me. I can't really describe it besides that. It feels like everything was finally balanced to near perfection. Combos can still be done, but without even more attention to them, they can be broken and countered. Defensive characters and strategies can finally be realized at their full potential. Omega Stages everywhere! What's not to love?
So...yeah. My opinions on the games usually don't match up with most everybody else, but I can't hate any of the games. I just have a personal preference. Why should I hate on people that prefer Melee over the others for their own rational reasons? But that's just me.
+Paul Mann IV Melee isn't _that_ much more offensive than the other games innately.
I also wouldn't call modifications of equations and values plugged into equations that determine properties of characters attacks and other things something you could attribute to differences in the engine.
But that's the way smashers describe it because... I don't know.
Donovan Kirk I want to take time and remind people of something. The creation of just about anything can be for a harmless reason, yet the end result can be blown beyond proportion, see Project M. Do I HATE the mod itself? No, absolutely not. I despise the people behind it and those that call it the magnum opus of Smash despite it being a mod and not an official game, then calling Sakurai out as a bad programmer and person. Been around too many personally. Will I play it? On occasion. Is it my favorite? No. For those that want to play it, go for it.
ANYWAYS, it doesn't matter what was meant in the beginning of Project M. It was turned into a completely different project and now is hailed by Melee Elitists. Again, what it starts as isn't what it will always end as.
So some people won't see where the Elitist part is. I urge you to go to the project website and read the character analyses and see for yourself why I have a personal grudge against the people behind it all, not the mod itself. I could say the same about Dr. Mario and Mewtwo with their Smash 4 analyses on the Wiki, but that's another can of worms to open when I feel like talking about why people feel that there are obvious buffs to a character and their "Pro-Melee" behavior twists everything up (yes, I'm referring to Mewtwo's).
Donovan Kirk So it has come to this. It's time for me to cherry pick the points myself.
1. The fact that there is a Wavedash.
2. "Everyone's favorite Kong has never really had an especially impressive showing in a Smash title, but with a Melee-based design and specially made changes to his moveset, he hopes to change that in Project M"
3. "In the transition from Melee to Brawl, the good Captain lost a lot of what made him such a beloved player choice, mostly due to the vastly different environment he was placed in. With the overall feel of Melee brought back for Project M, as well as a few minor tweaks, Falcon is revved up and ready to go with new found energy. This incarnation of Falcon plays very similarly to how he played in Melee" because people forget that Captain Falcon also received plenty of buffs in Brawl like reversable Falcon Punch
4. "In Project M, we have opted to give him speedy physics similar to the other Star Fox characters, but with the ability to move much faster horizontally in midair. This causes Wolf to feel familiar to people who played Fox and Falco in Melee" Yeah, let's just make Wolf MORE like a Melee Clone!
5. I won't even quote anything from Falco. He's back to being a Fox Clone without much difference. Brawl made sure to give them more differences.
6. "Overall, the Project M development team is confident that by using Melee Link as a template and giving him minor speed and power buffs, this incarnation of Link will be the best seen in a Smash game to date." Yep, just Melee Link. Nothing from Brawl Link.
7. "Toon Link entered Brawl as a spiritual successor to Young Link from Melee, but with some small tweaks in his moveset to further differentiate himself from his slower counterpart. Despite those small tweaks, Toon Link in Brawl managed to still feel too similar to his adult self while still losing the unique aspects that Young Link posessed. Project M's Toon Link is a hybrid of not only Brawl's Toon Link and Melee's Young Link, but Link's incarnation in Smash 64 as well! Carefully using ideas from all three characters results in a character that is unique yet will still feel familiar to fans of either character in Melee or Brawl." I said it before and I'll say it again: Toon Link was more different from Link than Young Link ever was and ever will be.
8. "In Brawl, Ganondorf's outing was a mere shadow of his status in Melee. The drastic changes in game mechanics and gravity completely negated what made him so effective in Melee - particularly L-Canceling - and crippled Ganondorf's pressure options." The fact that L-Canceling was even brought up oozes with Elitism.
9. " In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, this is manifested in a mechanic that grants his moves additional damage and knockback as he takes damage and loses stocks. Needless to say, we didn't think that rewarding the player for getting hit was the best possible design choice." Oh no, because keeping the opponent on edge without the need to constantly combo is BAD. Because we can't have anything like Wobbuffet in a fighting game that can dish everything back harder than ever when more damaged.
10. "Naturally, in Project M his Melee self has been accurately restored, from animations to hitboxes to physics with a few buffs here and there to boot."
11. "The most dramatic change is the removal of Brawl's Angel Ring and repurposing of his signature recovery move. When a player uses Pit's Side Special, rather than spinning his bow around and yelping like an undisciplined toddler, Pit will use his wings to launch forward into a command-glide: Wings of Icarus."
12. "In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ike is an intimidating yet predictable character; but no longer." Isn't every character?
13. "In Project M, Snake has taken a highly tactical route. Many of his attacks have been revamped in a way that focuses Snakes gameplay on utilizing his ordnance and close quarters combat. Additionally, Snake now joins the weight class of his fellow humans. Players will have to be thoughtful about all their decisions and attacks as Snake can no longer brute force his way into a battle." Acting like there was a real problem with how he played in Brawl.
"When it barely plays like Melee", right? When everything changes to Melee with minor changes, it still feels like Melee.
Panic double jumps when getting hit off stage: I come from a region that have a lot of low leveled players, and I base a lot of my playstyle on mind games, heavy reading, and habit exploitation and one of the habits I see from a lot of the lower leveled players is them double jumping immediately once they get hit off stage. I've practiced against the AI for a long time (don't recommend doing this) and one of the habits I constantly look for is that panic double jump.
Another bad habit that I see is the get up attack. It can be incredibly easy to punish, especially when your opponent always picks that option.
why is he talking as if super smash bros is an Olympic sport or something? Lol, it's only a fun game to play
+Ax Ismael Not true, there are tournaments for hundreds of thousands of dollars every year
SSBM Tutorials are there really? Wow, how times change
+Ax Ismael this has been going on since 2004, its no news that smas bros games (melee) are seriously competetive
Melee is an Esport
+Ax Ismael I recommend saving your opinions until you have all the facts. Think before you type.
Tips for avoiding the mistakes in the video:
5. Practice fluid movement in training. Standing still at all in smash brothers shows a lack of tact. You want to dominate your space in order to pressure your opponent.
4 and 3. Only roll and double jump when necessary. Every move can be punished. Sometimes a situation where you normally jump is better to attack, and a situation where you normally attack is better to spotdodge. Think outside the box, and use your resources wisely.
2. Learn which techs are best for what scenario. Sometimes rolling away is better to avoid a combo, and sometimes, standing tech is better to attack immediately. Use common sense.
1. In melee, shield can be cancelled with jump and up smash. Practice jumping out of shield, and use dash grab cancels to grab your opponents. Shield grabbing only makes you more vulnerable. Also practice spot dodging out of shield, in case your opponents decide to punish your jumps out of shield.
Noobiest habit is when people just spam the c-stick smash attacks.

Attah attah
When you're friends think they're the shit but they end up picking your main so you have to show them up. Worst feeling ever after you win and they "hate you". Lol
Frozen in fear after I charge a F-Smash when the opponent is waiting for me.
I'm just delaying the inevitable death.
Falco noob habits (that I unfortunately do):
- Laser too close
- Laser when cornered
- Double laser from the ledge
- Rising dair from the ledge
- Automatically going to the top platform or cornering myself after taking a stock
- Early aerials on shield
- Jump directly towards a standing opponent in the neutral (into a wavedash back grab)
- Not utilting enough
- Not grabbing enough
- Not knowing how to approach an opponent directly above me (ex: I'm on the ground vs. a Fox on a battlefield side platform)
This is why I love Luigi, because no one expects a shield grab when their attacks send you across the stage, but when you get one, boy do they feel dumb. Talk about momentum canceling. lol
Worst noob habit I’ve seen is ledge camping(ultimate)
People hear “just back throw Mac at zero” so they stand at the ledge thinking I’m just gonna run into their arms like an idiot, then rage quit when I don’t
Everytime I come off the respawn platform after a stock, some of my friends will always do the exact same thing that I've pointed out to them SEVERAL TIMES: they go to one side of the stage or the other, and immediately double jump up to the platform. It's so easy to read that I'll just come off of the platform and put an attack up high on the side of the stage they're on, and they jump into it 99% of the time.
my friend constantly up smashes as Fox and says "it's the only way to do good damage" LOL K. that's why I four stocked you rofl
k
One of the worst habits is easily DJing immediately after getting knocked off stage. Doesn't matter what percent or if you could opt to just DI to the ledge, newer kids will ALWAYS dj back and ask nicely for a bair.
Kirby down b.
Also, loving the "what character should I play vids. Keep going with those, they're great.
Always using aerials or some move that propels them down ward(like Kirby, and Bowser's down B) when coming down form the air. My friend does it a lot I just easily read him and punish. I use to do it too, but I got good thanks to your videos.
when you're up 3 whole stocks but you lose all of them due to attempts in style points.
Being a Smash 4 player, my worst habit is doing Smash 4 things in Melee. Jumping forward and trying to move back with characters other than Jiggles, turnaround Bairs, trying to edge guard offstage with characters other than Sheik or Marth, trying to Perfect Pivot Forward Smash, Ledge Trumping... It's just been SO damn long since I've played competitive Melee with ANYONE that I've forgotten how to play the game entirely.
Getting hit by an up move and doublejumping immediately and then upB'ing/airdodging while still being over the stage.
"Great, I'll just juggle you for a bit then!"
One Habit I've done before is I use 2 buttons for a part of the match, then realize I can shield, then use shield a lot, then rinse and repeat with other buttons
one bad habit i saw at a tourny was this one marth kid that would dash dance the second the game started, lost control of the stage instantly, and got his shit rocked.
Always drifting forward when doing an attack from ledge. It's like donating stocks.
The ABSOLUTE WORST mistake I've seen is definitely spamming attacks while getting rekt without realizing that move is easy for me to avoid.
I expected most all of these except for shield-grabbing. It might be because I'm more of a Marth guy and my sparring partner doesn't have the best Flaco, but I never really saw how punishable a shield grab could be. Now that I'm aware of another perspective on the shield grab aspects of the game, I'm gonna need to look into other stuff like aerials out of shield or analyzing the pros and cons of where I decide to wavedash OoS.
