The Tributary Dredge Pump is an easy to use pump that allows you to pump gravel and sand from the bottom of creeks and rivers to a bucket, for easy gold panning and sluicing. For moving higher volumes of material you can easily adapt the unit to a floating dredge.
Our simple light weight design, incorporating a Patent Pending CNC machined valve system uses no motor, allowing the user to pack it in to hard to get places where getting a motorized dredge is not feasible. The Trinity Dredge Pump works in as little as a few inches of water and easily sucks gold out of small cracks that are hard to clean.
We manufacture the Tributary Dredge Pump from tuff PVC Plastic for durable use. The pump shaft is stainless steel with highest quality leather pump cups. Leather cups and valve flappers are fully repairable and replaceable on site.
The Tributary Dredge Pump is also excellent for cleaning Koi Ponds, pumping out spas, swimming pools and is also great for flooding emergencies where water needs to be transferred to another location. Not recommended for solvent and fuel spills.

I would say it needs a flange to stop knuckle crush, a pistol grip handle like you said but I also think it might benefit from some sort of swivel mounted foot stirrup or spike to keep the thing from moving when you pump, you can just point in in the direction needed put forward pressure on and pump.
How about being really radical and having two modified automobile foot pumps rigged up to the pipe so you could walk on the spot and pump at the same time.
