i remember my uncle when he had the beige color hz 1 tonner with 4.2 tri matic colum auto and my aunty having the 74 hq yellow black / black interior 308 tri matic auto gts monaro as her car , even in today of sep 2021 this monaro is still a local to this victorian town in east gippsland , offically a 3 owner car with all books and papers , my aunty bought it as a demo car think in bendigo , added the tow bar and it spent 10 years towing horse floats until they bought the 84 60 series G pack landcruiser , drove that for 12 years and bought the 80' series in 96 , and got plus 3,000 on its new car price as sold it private, now the 80's series was a total lemon car in their eyes and toyota dealers eyes too , it had broken crankshaft from brand new to 75 ,000km before breaking ,, well done toyota they jumped straight in and offered holden dealer full replacement free off charge , and fitted it too , as this car was under toyota watchful eye after extenstive history of this noise in motor from new , honest agreement between toyata and owners of this landcruiser , this is why you can rely on a toyota ,, then they bought the wh v8 statesman new and got so many issues they called it a lemon too , i worked for holden while the v8 recall was on , and 75% of our vx /vy sales were all v8 ,, after rebuild bullet proof motors and quite too

I owned a few new sandmans from utes to Pvans. My favorite was the HJ. All of them were 308s. I had a couple of autos but most were manual. Not only were they great vehicles but they opened up a lifestyle that we will never see again. Very fond memories and a great lose not having these type of vehicles anymore.

They had the same forklift when they arrived at the site that loaded them at the depot!

Used to have a blue HZ sandman, great for the drive-in's. The dealership sold it to me as a 253 but I found it was a 308 when I got a closer look a day or two later. I guess they thought the smaller engine would help it sell seeing as petrol prices were scaring everyone still. Not the best for blind spots but it had grunt and appeal.

When Australians made quality Australian cars for Australians. Never to be repeated again sadly.

I think it was the best model out in 1978/9, till the VB came out and i had a SL/E 5LT, silver with the light cream valorer trim, beast basically, but i think you could order the SANDMAN with side pipe exhaust or maybe it was a aftermarket model, my friend had one and the Le Monaro, i wonder why they did not make the new LE Version, still loved the statesman caprice, which my friend mum had one and we used to say no my mums Roles royce LTD was better more power and heaps of more room as well, + it was a town car as well. :) They dont make them like they used to do they ? All that plastic yet still weigh in at nearly 2 tons lol :)

Looking back at cars, fashion, music generated in Australia prior to the 1980s I see more of an American style to things where we later became more European.

Hilariously, the cement mixer almost toppled off the 1 tonner as it comes around the corner. No fancy tie down straps needed back then! And those tight pants...... 1980s fashions 👎
