One cutscene in Heroes of might and Magic 5 always brings Dark Eldar to mind it was a Dungeon (Dark Elf) villain telling his subordinate something like: "I'm in a mood to celebrate! Fetch me a slave, and towels for the blood."
It was my first Codex as well! Reminds me of the smell of plastic glue and the sweet sounds of Vengaboys as I got frustrated with the spindly arms of the old Warrior box. Good times.
The "gruesome trophies" rule does seem a bit funny at first, given that at least three other races like displaying heads or skulls (of their enemies, in the case of Orks and Chaos, or their heros in the case of the Imperium). But i suppose it makes sense - a throne made out of a mountain of skulls is badass. A throne made out of a mountain of fingers would just be creepy and weird.
They were my secondary army after my beloved 3e and 3.5 ed chaos (remember kids: if it has a 3rd and a 3.5 edition, it's the best thing ever). They were an impossibly difficult army to play and every single choice to the last item counted and had to be part of a plan. Said this, the update made some difference, I wouldn't despise it.
Are you guys going to do another video on the 1st Ed "Rogue Trader" book? I recently got a copy of ebay, and there are still a lot of interesting/bizarre/stupid things to cover. (Like the planet Birmingham, and the Space Wolves chaptermaster being a Lord Lucan).
I know my limits, and that is 31 shots of wiskey. I almost went above that after doing a marathon of these episodes. Pray for my liver, im stoping here.
Or as I put it to someone at GW once as I was building my DE army list in 6th "They drink the tears of children" one of the managers looked at me funny as did the person I was explaining it too "What? you asked me about the different between Eldar and Dark Eldar" was my reply.
This was my first ever codex. Thanks for those memories. (I've actually recently stripped Kruellagh to repaint with a touch more technique than when I bought her.) You've got a new subscriber!
THE DARK ELDAR WERE ALSO MY FIRST ARMY, MY MOM WAS ALSO WEIRDED OUT! MY CODEX IS IN WORSE CONDITION TOO HAHA YOU GOT YOURSELF A LIFETIME SUBSCRIBER!!! BEEN LOVING YOUR CODEX COMPLAINT SERIES, ITS SO NOSTALGIC AHHHHH (sorry for the all caps .... my cat I dont own stepped on the keyboard) lol
I have a simlar experience with the DE codex. I started in highschool, around 98/99, Dark Eldar were the new hotness in the 3ed box set, the lore, imagery and proliferation of Space marines and the Imperium in general drove me into the clutches of the Xenos so much that I struck a deal with 3 friends that wanted to play: split a box with me, you get the ass-tard-es, rule book dice, templates and rulers. I get vampire pirate space elves and terrain. I ended up with 30 warriors around 10 wyches converted from the female and light armor bitz, add in a metal Archon [converted to have a splinter rifle because I was bad at 40k and thought models with 3+ wounds and attacks should be able to stay 12+" away and throw s3 spitballs...] and a raider and I had~ 1,000 points of bolter splatter [having made 3 opponents whose BoG standard troops choice is a hard counter to everything in my army that costs less than 100pts... The store we played/shopped at [a model store whose owner insisted that Lionel trains were his bread & butter when the only non-GW thing he had to restock was brushes and glue...] closed around 2003, the actual GW store being a 2 hour train ride away and work/school responsibilities broke the group up [~1500 Dark Eldar, 1,000 Dark Angels with a baneblade..., 3k+ Dark Angels, 1000 Blood Angels, 500 Eldar, ~250 Sisters Of Battle and 2500+ Hive Fleet Behemoth]. I picked it up again when a friend's store shifted from MTG and video games to MTG and GW around 2010, the end of 4e. I rejoiced at the 4.5e codex that removed the need for special characters to have melee troops, gave veteran versions of wyches and warriors and made splinter weapons suck less. I got back into it so heavily that my 1500 [damaged down to almost 1000 from poor storage and moving] swelled to 3k with points bloat [every vehicle and wargear choice, my shooty warriors were close to Land Raider price]... just enough to enter MWG's first Apocalypticon [the 500k one, I'm the DE player that deep striked my entire army [ok the wyches and incubi used the webway...] and didn't get tabled. More moving damage [some caused by customs not allowing me to close my own case, broke almost an entire squad] and Harlequins [and later Ynnarri and Corsairs] becoming a thing I now have 4-5 1000-1500 detachments: Killer Klowns [Death jester heavy Quins], Edgey Vamps [Poisoned Tongue] , Irate Pirates [Duke Sliscus Sky serpents], Crak-Worlders [Ynnarri lead byAhrha an incubus converted Karandras using Vysarch rules] and EDC Fight Club [Wych cult of 7th Woe]
My first army I played against my brother on our dining room table. I've got an entire collection of 3rd edition codex collection and still playing 3rd today. 3rd edition just hits different.
Oh my. You have awoken some memories related to the era of that Codex... one of the best must be this one fan made "Family Guy 40,000" parody comic where they plainly had Dark Eldars squela how their Codex WILL get it's update... fun stuff, fun stuff... xD
One of the codices I remember well. They were always kind of mysterious as they hadn't had a chunky 2nd edition codex to provide fluff. From what I remember there was a story in White Dwarf 241 that went into a bit more detail, or heavily hinuted at the relationship between Slaneesh and the DE. But they really ended up one of those abandoned armies, like SoB throughout much of the 2000s. It feels like it's only in recent years that GW have realised that people actually want variety and exploring different aspects of the universe like back in RT days.
my favorite part of that book, is the hermonculi (sp?) qoute "you know, you really should be grateful, you will feel so much cooler once I have removed all of your skin"
I like to imagine the magneto directional impulse spine is kind of like having a cat that is also a gun. When it battle it revs up like its hissing and draws itself toward enemies and after the raids it softly purrs while being caressed by its dark eldar master for a job well-done.
Trayzn wasn’t in the 3rd edition codex though, he was introduced later when the Necrons were revamped from an army of Space terminators led by some cosmic gods to an army of Space tomb Kings that enslaved some gods. This massive change from the original fluff made some people angry though.
I found it very funny at the time that Scourges were basically useless, as they had jump packs, but used heavy weapons...so had to miss a turn of shooting if they moved, which you wanted them to...
The second editon version was my favorite codex. Dark eldar was my favorite army alongside eldar. The original Talos scorpion model was just awesome, i feel like they went a step back with the newer model for it.
Unbeatable evil space elves. Facing a horde army, splinter cannons. Facing a tough army, dark lances. Facing a fast army, they're not as fast as you. They were massively unbalance, thank god the minis where so ugly or everyone would be playing them.
7:45 Just so we're clear. That's a "Sound of Music" reference. So somehow in universe, space alien elves that are older than humanity have preserved the memory of Julie Andrews for some 38,000 years and turned a wholesome story about singing to flee Nazis into an S&M anthem. That's quite an implication. Mostly because it turns out S&M nightmare elves are musical theatre people.
i only knew them as spiky boys because of SPACE MARINE vs dark eldar box set my big brother got (take as guess who got force to play as spiky boys), playing as them was painful, literally
Bruva Alfabusa sees to do that Dark Eldar voice a bit too well......
Just try not to meet him in a dark alley...
Oculas2003 at the very least too enthusiastically.

it's been decided. wib will voice all deamonettes from now on .
But there are no deamonettes in the game.

Love the use of the dual shock Resident Evil music for Alfa's quote reading. XD
The Dark Eldar are not nice. NOT. NICE. AT ALL.
"Life in the 41st millenium is hard"
They'll certainly be getting coal in their Christmas stockings.
I remember one of the books where they stripped someone down to the nerves and hung them from the ceiling. And the dude was still alive!
I will use a word I dont use often, dark eldar are....mean
I’d still hit
Alfabusa sexy voice is like a light of thousand suns shining on my pale skin,
Like a thousand menial urchins going at a sack of potatoes?
I read both in Corax's voice.
It is quite sensual
I love how they're the most stupidly gothic thing ever, and this is coming from a ten-years Imperial player.
I'd say more emo goth
That Heckin' Jeffer and his goth poetry. Never a minute of peace with that guy around.
The "gruesome trophies" rule does seem a bit funny at first, given that at least three other races like displaying heads or skulls (of their enemies, in the case of Orks and Chaos, or their heros in the case of the Imperium).

my favorite part of that book, is the hermonculi (sp?) qoute "you know, you really should be grateful, you will feel so much cooler once I have removed all of your skin"
I love how edgy the Dark Eldar were back then, I could always get a good laugh from the quotes.
and like any edgy nerd, they lacked the punch to support their edginess...
It was my first codex as well. And with the little update I won on local tournaments even in the 5th edition! That where the times...
I like to imagine the magneto directional impulse spine is kind of like having a cat that is also a gun. When it battle it revs up like its hissing and draws itself toward enemies and after the raids it softly purrs while being caressed by its dark eldar master for a job well-done.
