- how to instal/replace a door handle on a 2003 through 2007 classic silverado/sierra.
should work for the following vehicals 2003-2007 classic.
yukon
tahoe
suburban
avalanche
escalade
may also work on vehicles years 1999 through 2002 also.
Great video. I’m fixing to have to do this on my passenger door handle. It’s not retracting on its own anymore. Straight forward and to the point. I feel more comfortable doing this myself after seeing your video.
Damm you tube is great sometimes lol
Thank you! Good luck
Thank you! I don't think I would have tried to tackle this if not for this video! I appreciate it. My new handle is installed and works well and I only have one screw left over!
"You are awesome"! My six year old son tried to open the handle by pulling down on it so needless to say he broke it off but your video helped me get a new one on thank you very much.
Steven Albright thank you for watching!
Thanks, it made the job fairly easy. If no one has said the torx is a T20. Thankfully I had a helper, but without one this would be difficult.
James Vellenga thanks for watching. Appreciate the input.
Thank you for the video. After watching I was able to change out the drivers side on my 2006 Silverado. I found the Torx bolt to be a T20.
Nice video. Just an FYI. On some classic sierra's and silverado's 2003- 2006, there is also a 9/32"or 7mm screw in the middle of the bottom of the door panel, which if not removed, will prevent lifting and removal of the door panel.
James MacLean in my 03 silverado and 07 classic sierra all that bolt does is hold in your door tray. I guess some of them were weird. Thanks for the input.
Very nice video, not sure who give this thumbs down when someone takes the time to make this. Very helpful, thank you. My 2004 Sierra SLT did not have the 2 torx bolts shown and the panel came off fine.
Very good tutorial 👍🏽👍🏽 nice fix.....
Y oh Y do they use plastic instead of metal just makes me want to pull my hair out..
So u have the freezing cold..... And here in Arizona I have the freaking hot hot weather so hot you can't touch the door handles or work on any metal component without frying your hand or you get up at like 3:00 in the morning and you do it while it's still 95 to 100 out 😂🧐😊
Peace and keep on rocking the free world 🌍👍🏽
Thanks for the video. The only thing i did different was instead of using a wrench. I put a small ratchet in there with my hand and looked on the hole on the side to make sure I got the nut and didn't drop it. Had a extension magnet tool on the side just incase. Thanks again.
twe12vegaugeTX great, glad I could help.
Great video. You even showed the screws, which was my problem. Someone didn't put half the screws back. I may never buy Chevy again, over that damn torx screw with the sleeve on it. 20$ for the 2 screws for the lock and door handle. Give me a break. Can't imagine what the fancy torx screw will be???
Thank you for the perfect video.
Thanks for the video. I plan on changing out my black textured handles for color matched handles in the next week.
Some scum broke my door handle tryin to break in my truck ... this will be very helpful ty !
Sorry to hear that, that’s a big problem up where I live as well.
Good video! I'll be doing my door handle swap this weekend!
I appreciate you putting this video up, made my handle change easy! The suggestion to use the 10mm ratchet wrench was very helpful. Than you so much!
Great video you just saved me buying a new door handle thank you I didn't know this was a common problem with them and that's exactly what it feels like the thing whatever it's attached to fell off oh and by the way it's 12°F at where I am and I'm doing this LOL go figure I wonder if it's the extreme cold that fatigues those plastic clips too much and they fall apart great idea with the zip ties
Chason Mass glad I could help, stay warm.
Thank you. Fixed my handle using this vid. It’s slightly dif on driver door, due to hole for lock. Same process tho.
TheBearGrylz Glad to hear I could help, haven’t done a driver door yet. Thanks for watching.
Thank you, I just completed changing my driver side handle, it was pretty simple!
thanks for the info, new handle installed!
Jamie Deitchman glad I could help, thanks for watching.
they sell those clips at most auto parts stores. usually back on the universl rack.
Thanks for sharing. Ur post helped me fix my issue.
Thank you. I install a A/C filter nice job
Wow i am happy.
Thank you again
William A
that 9/32 is a 7mm
i was thinking the same thing...
The last small hook to the metal wire linkage that you clipped to the red clip is supposed to go into the hole that’s in the red clip where it attaches to the door handle and the red clip is to keep it from coming out of the hole. So the wire rod does the pulling not the plastic clip. It goes in the hole you put the zip tie in.
I just posted a long comment about mine not working...It seems like it will work but once it's mounted there is no tension and nothing happens when I pull the handle. Wondering if my rod is f-ed up...You seem to know a little so I"m replying to your comment to ask for suggestions. 2004 Tahoe passenger side
I wish I could help but without seeing it I would only be guessing. It’s alittle time consuming but the drivers door is basically a mirror image of the passenger side so you could look at that door and try to see what might be different. If the rod was pulled too hard it might have been bent in a way making it longer, but without looking at it I really can’t say.
Very helpful. Thank you
Donald Peyton glad I could help
Good vid. Much appreciated
ecgodsmack86 appreciate the input. Thanks for watching
Remove the 2 rear nuts holding the door handle, then gently tug on the handle. The forward tab will bend, allowing much easier access than reaching up from inside the door.
Can you explain more about this? I don't know what you mean.I'm going to try it very soon!
Cool thanks for the video! My drivers side just stopped working today, I'd pull on it and nothing happens, but works from the inside. I was assuming it was that clip that just came off too. I'll try it out tomorrow and probably just use zip ties too. Again thanks for showing where all the screws are located and sizes etc, it will make it MUCH easier. I've never taken off a door panel on this truck before. Should be pretty similar on the drivers side I assume. I had to do something similar with the tail gate latch before too, one of those metal rods like that dorr handle came loose, that really sucked since I have a cover in the back so couldn't open it or use the the back at all lol! Gotta love zip ties!
the actual metal part broke on mine. F. Wonder if i can swap the back one to the front? You think? I did notice this one had a L1 on it. idk. haha
Like right at the top, from the handle right past where the spring is to pull the handle back. cannot fix this with zip ties unfortunately :(
Just for the record, nope the back one cannot be used. Different shape and length. That panel was super easy to take off btw. I did not take out the handle, measured the rod first, although that one had REALLY easy nuts to get to. That one would be really easy to replace.
Frozen day in Michigan. Went to open my door and the handle ripped right off. :( New handle will be here tomorrow.
Thank you
J D thanks for watching! Hope it helped.
The torques bit is a T20. Or should be
right now on my truck the door handle broke and is loose. the door unlock and lock but you just can't open the door from the outside. you can pull on door handle and you can tell its not connected to something. was this the same issue you had?
great video... thx
thanks bro I have the same problem...
Mine's not working....It went smoothly (we did it before on the driver side), but the handle doesn't catch anything once installed. When you pull on it there is no pressure, like it is already in the pulled on position, and you can see that the little rod is not moving up and down. It seems like it will work but once it is all the way pushed into the door it doesn't work, the metal part that is supposed to be pulled when you pull the handle is already in the "pulled"position (the metal arm that is in the plastic bracket that moves when you pull it. Can't tell if it's a bad handle or something wrong in the door, but the rod is still attached and it will move until I push the handle all the way into it's mountings. The door does open from the inside. Hubby pulled the handle right off when it was frozen shut last week. The metal piece that comes up out of the spring and then has the little plastic bracket snapped right off so the little part that clips onto the rod stayed on the rod and the handle came off. The bolts all stayed in the door too because the weak point on these handles is that the screws are glued into the plastic handle. Any thoughts on if I"m doing something wrong? 2004 Tahoe passenger side
Did both sides in little over hour
Now I can change my ugly ass flame handles that the previous owner had installed thank god.
I have a 2003 and I didn’t even have to do any of the taking the inside panel off bullshit I just took the outside door handle off put the new one on and done
Ok that's great and all but what about this... my inside AND outside door handles are broke. The door is shut. How do I get the door pannel off to fix the handles if I cant get the door open to get the door pannel off? I'm dead serious lol idk wtf to do
Very nice, Thank you...........
Lance Graff glad I could help, thanks for watching
What was the original issue with your handle? We have a suburban and whatever makes the door handle work broke off because now you can't open the door from the outside. It isn't attached to anything anymore. What is the name of the part to fix that?
A Police officer use a slim jim to open my car door and pop that red plastic clip from the door handle, I had to remove the door cover and pop it back in so the door could open from the outside, just to let you know how mine was damaged.
Ok what about on the driver side. I just replaced mine but now the lock mechanism doesnt want to work when the new door handle is on there
i have a question can i put door handle from the back in the driver an passenger sense any key opens them?
Noel Barraza I have never done that. In theory it should work as long as it's coming from the same side. If you try it let me know how it works out. Thanks for watching.
Do you have to replace the whole door handle or is a spring to retract the lever available. I cant seem to find any information.
PhotoMan Mark I replaced my whole door handle, gm may sell a spring kit with all the accessories to replace it I'm not sure. I'll let you know if I find any info.
PhotoMan Mark
I had to buy an entire door handle brand new. No store sold individual parts. Chevy didn't have individual parts either. Wasn't too bad of a price. Door handle was replaced in October 2017. Try calling dealerships. I was in an entirely different state when I had to do the replacement, thanks to someone attempting to steal my vehicle by popping in the lock of drivers side door. There is only one lock to access the vehicle.
Heated seat controls on the driver side must be holding my panel in place...
Need to tighten the handle from one side, I didn't see you remove the window regulator though, mine is in the way, but I didn't remove into last time, can't get through to the side into need to tighten, anybody got advice??
Hey Thank you....!!!...Got mine done...I have a spare clip you are welcome too...I can send it postage on me...!!!
why not install new linkage retainer clips.
offplanetevent because I did not have them or put an order in for them. I haven't taken apart the door handle since this video and it's held up great. Thanks for watching.
stop using zip ties and tape for repairs. that little red quick disconnect clip is available at advance, autozone etc...
What if you have a crank window?
Laura there’s a Clip on the handle pull it off
You have to push the door panel in really hard sometimes to get your head in there to see it
will it be the same on a 1500 HD?
Julio Lopez should be if the year falls between 1999-2007 classic.
Project Duramax yes it is. luckily I'm in Houston so it's no were near as cold as wherever you are from. thanks
so I did it all by myself no help from my husband, my daddy, or my brother. but I will never do it again!
Mine just broke last night and no garage lol
My rods are bent need help
Entire new handle is $12... Just sayin.
