The critic says te B-17 segment could make for a brilliant film. Well, the story was written by Dan Obannon. This was his original concept before he wrote the script for "ALIEN".
According to Wikipedia, Diamanda was right. Taarna's soul has been reincarnated in the girl, so maybe Loc-Nar(That's the name of the green ball that melts things) wanted to kill the girl before she fully evolves into Taarna.
Taarna is the most complete of the stories because it was the only one fully invented for the movie (while heavily inspired by Moebius' Arzach), while all others were truncated from long-running strips in Heavy Metal magazine.
My theory was always that, since the orb apparently can exist in all times and places, it has multiple entities in existence, but are all linked to one evil, so I always viewed the stories taking place at the exact same time, showing how he's destroying lives all across the universe. But when one of his parts is defeated by an act of ultimate good, it causes him to feel it through all his parts. You could argue that in this way, the evil hasn't really been defeated, and will always exist, but now has less influence to work with.
Out of all the stories in this movie the two that really stuck with me the most were the B-17 story (The one with the zombies) and the So Beautiful, So Dangerous story (The one with the aliens). Those stories have some of the best animation and they have some of the best plots to them. I could see those two story's being there own movies. Those are also the only two stories in the movie to not be named after the main character of them. Also the aliens are very funny to watch.
I'd love to see a remake...with better animation,of course, and maybe a little fixing of the script...but I know it's never gonna happen. Even when traditional animation was going full speed in the 90's,I knew that the sort of time, talent and money that went into the making of something like "The Lion King" would never be used on something like this, not on something they can't show to general audiences, thus insuring the biggest audience.Any if anybody *was* thinking of making something like this back then,I'd say "Cool World" pretty much killed any notion by anyone in Hollywood to make an adult animated feature. And even if they did remake it...in an era where traditional animation has been swept aside...who needs a CGI version...which probably won't look much different than something we've seen in a computer game?
The animation isnt even half bad; it kinda fits the vibe of the movie. Maybe just fix the glitches and make the script fit together better. Even the music is kinda cool.
This movie is awesome, imho. I know NC did these to give us a show but reviewing it this way, trying to make sense of it, as if it really has a big linear narrative seems pointless and wrong, to me. I mean, it's like trying to make sense of "The Wall" movie from Pink Floyd. In many ways, i considered "Heavy Metal" as a big music video, it's just meant to be enjoy as it is, in all it's trippy and psychedelic glory. I'm considered myself proud to be "straight edge" but as an art lover and creator, i always found this film quite useful any time i need inspiration.
Like Woodstock, I'm wondering if you just had to be alive at that particular time and place to understand the true majesty of Heavy Metal. It taught us all how to rock. And if you were really confused by any of the sequences or scenes, ask me any question about the plot that you like. My definitive and inarguable answer to any of them is, of course, simply: BECAUSE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
Dude, that's a trip! Stop trying to analyze it as a regular movie :) I never partook in any psychedelic substances, or even smoked a joint, but I get it :) Heavy Metal is just one, great trip :)
0:45 lol anyone noticed a US navy jet in the stranded island despite the event taking place during WW2? :D ... Oh BTW, you forgot one more melted character, that bimbo which the cab driver snuffed out.
Talk about over analyzing "Heavy Metal". How do they NOT KNOW that it's based on a surreal European comics aesthetic where nothing ever makes sense? It's the coolest movie ever made.
"...it knew how it would be killed and tried to kill Taarna to prevent its fate by killing Taarna in the present...then exploded for no reason." Well, it's possible that it expected the explosion to kill Taarna. Though given the fact that Taarna immediately ran off, that's kind of a stupid plan.
What made this movie famous was the soundtrack. The bands listed in ost wrote songs specifically for the movie, but due to legal shenanigans the soundtrack was literally unattainable. This was before the internet or even the video toaster, so only studio level gear could extract the songs and no studio would risk getting sued to do it. So for something like 20 + years the songs were in Heavy Metal movie only, in fact due to weird licensing agreements in Canada or something to that effect, the artist themselves couldn't even perform the songs they wrote and performed for the movie. Then in mid to late 90's either someone died, the law/rights expired, or was changed and for the first time all the songs became unlocked so to speak. To its credit the songs are pretty bitchin', so the soundtrack was finally released and then the internet exploded at about the same time. This was the first porn cartoon that started in english, rather than the japanese imports, so in early days of the web softcore cartoon porn was still porn. But many many people enjoyed the boobies, but even more like the songs and napster did the rest. Which is where this moive's fame comes from, people wanted to the hear the songs again, but wanted to skip the movie. Rock&Rule is also like that, though it has no porn and not many songs, still people digged the soundtrack more than the movie itself.
I Asked I remembered Doug said he might should wanna get to Rock n rule anytime at one of this years con. There's some good news there. I don't know.... ....
Gara Von Hoiwkenzoiber OH and besides Hagan stated in the ending review, the movie Hagan suggested to review was meant to be "fire and Ice" she accidentally bought the wrong DVD! Fire and ice might make it a crossover review with marzgurl, she said so.
4:11-4:15 - My reaction when I'm having trouble with a level in Pokémon Shuffle, and I make a move which triggers a massive chain of combos that beats the level in no time.
Heavy Metal easily holds a special place in my heart, and that's even while agreeing that the major boobage is absurdly gratuitous. because SPAAACE CAR! And also the B-17 scene is classic.
anyone who doesnt already know should be aware that if it wasnt for this movie then movies like akira or ghost in the shell wouldnt exist, the whole wave of adult oriented anime came from this movie, without it there would be no gits and without gits there would be no matrix, and you could say goodbye to deathnote and attack on titan and so on, so give credit where credit is due.
mature themed animes exist before this movie. Akira, Ghost in the Shell and all the other adult stuff would exist without that movie. It has no influence on japans anime movies.
btw you know how you talked about how they mix film and draw over it to make animation? well look at the way these characters move you will see that animation style is still in use that warrior girl is an actress they drew over top off. thing that bugged me the most is how the bird got killed so many times n kept coming back i was like comon just die >.< other then that one problem i loved this movie
there was a mistake in the melting counter........the correct number of meltings is 5(the dad,the mutant thing with the metal detector, the hijacker, the fat guy and the girl) just sayin'
I never thought I would see this moment, NC actually killed a joke so badly that left me with bad taste on my mouth... and interestingly enough, it was related to the critic I think of as a shit face.
The critic says te B-17 segment could make for a brilliant film.
Well, the story was written by Dan Obannon.
This was his original concept before he wrote the script for "ALIEN".
seems he didn't do this research
Could just be an ironic and subtle reference to that fact - feigned ignorance as suggestion to the audience?
B-17? Was that the one with the silent women with white hair or some other story?
@@vincenthawthorne9360 No, the white haired woman was the last story: Taarna
According to Wikipedia, Diamanda was right. Taarna's soul has been reincarnated in the girl, so maybe Loc-Nar(That's the name of the green ball that melts things) wanted to kill the girl before she fully evolves into Taarna.
It actually said it during the ending voiceover in the movie.
But that still makes no sense.
Aaron Rush She's an unchecked pokemon.
If that's the case, why didn't it do that immediately? It just waffled on with its pointless stories.

Huh, so like the Lone Power in the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane
Thats a pretty good explanation. I couldn't find any logic at first.
Don't forget that the film got a parody in South Park!
CJCroen1393 I remembered that episode it's a decent one.
is that episode Kenny was getting high on cat pee?
Yep!
Hilary Gravina decent? It's hilarious!
"He's dead Dave, everybody's dead, everybody is dead Dave."
"Wait, are you trying to tell me everybody's dead?"
Wait a minute..... Is the robot voiced by John Candy? Because he sounds like John Candy! *looking at cast list* My God....... It is John Candy!!!
Avery Neuendorff Is it really?
zekroh6986 Yes it is.
It is. He was also the voice of Den in the movie.
yes the robot is john candy
@@adamcheck4941 You mean "John Candy of Gor!"
Just an interesting bit of trivia - the bird's name is Granger.

The way how they spontaneously end
Could the chained-sawed villain from Samurai Jack episode "Dome of Doom" be a reference from Heavy Metal?

+snarkus63 they are remaking everything these days, don't despair, it will happen :-)

Now *that's* a loaded statement!!

@@ghost_anna_reads787 Kinda cool? The soundtrack's among the best parts of this ... and I don't just mean the pop tunes.
8:19 The house turned into a Panty and Stocking villain.
I actually really like this movie. It's flaws just don't mater. love the psychedelic animation and the soundtrack.
best advice smoke a joint before you watch this one
I know right? ;)
Ryan Punk That's cause they smoked a lot while writing it. So it really helps.
Nope, joints won't work. You must not watch this film unless you're cheesing while you watch it. That's the only way to do it.
Just Another Guy Cheesing?
LeeviON It's a reference to South Park episode Major Boobage which references this film.
the planes were not B-52s, they were B-17s, just saying
Confusing b-29s with 17s are one thing,
But with the B-52?

the movie is a homage to 80's metal, its not suppose to make sense...

Was that a Pinky and the Brain reference from NC???
And thus all the people don't get melted, they get turned into Super Mutants, hell with Taarna, get the gawddamn Brotherhood Of Steel!

Sometimes "The Girl's" horrified reaction shots reminded me of Don Knotts. Now that I've told you that, you'll never be able to un-see it.
Still would've loved to've seen that Rock n' Rule movie review with those two.
Cool fact: Some of Taarna's scenes were animated by Danny Antonucci!
Wow. Never knew that the creator of Ed, Edd & Eddy had a hand in the making of this film.
The Holly/Red Dwarf reference just made my LIFE! :D
The inspiration of South Park's "Major Boobage". :)
will he do more reviews with diamada? thad'be awsome

car in space?

@Condorscondor Condor: the cheesing episode?
Is it just me, or does the guy at 1:26 look kinda like Agent 6 from Generator Rex?
The JO conversation at the end is a lot more funny now that JO is a guy
Is Diamanda still around?
Yep. Just did another crossover with the nostalgia critic on her channel. They reviewed bmx bandits
Oooh i have to check it out thanks Nathan Wood :-)
I noticed that too. Too bad Doug stopped doing the Top 11 F*ck-ups.

All i need to enjoy this movie, are a few funny mushrooms
So does the girl grow up into the woman from Heavy Metal 2000? The FAKK2

The music was underappriciated in this review.
this movie may just make the littlest sense of any movie he's reviewed
That Doctor looks an awful lot like the Thin Man from XCOM.

huh... so that's where they got the idea for COD's zombies mode...
I don't really think that Heavy Metal was intended to be story based to be honest.
Guess this is where Elon Musk got the idea.
And I too want to know how to get Catherine Zeta-Jones into a Batsuit.
@MASTERMIKE142...Diamanda is supposed to be a gay Joker from the Dark Knight, or a gay version of Brandon Lee from "The Crow". Take your pick.
I really got a big kick out of that comment NC just said.
car in space is AWSOME!!!!!!!!
How many times should we say "BURN THE MOVIE"
the joker's twin sister is boring?
I love Rock & Rule!!
I saw part 1 but who's the weird gay heavy metal guy?
Whats the movie with the cyborg having sex?
Space Truckers
+Garcia Hotspur Whyyyyy... oh dear.
Don't question enjoy the awesome...
JesuOtaku is pretty damn attractive though.
Sorry buddy. SHE'S A MAN, BABY!
JesuOtaku sucks (just visit her twitter), glad it was a crossover with Diamanda
nope, chuck tests
'CArs in Space'... just stop there.... its all you need to say.

Is C.R. gay? I'm cool with that if he is.
I am the second person to comment
