One of my professors worked for Bluth for a while, and he worked on this movie. He said that narrator wasn't even there at the start, and basically the entire dang movie was totally different to start. He always talks about how different the movie was going to be originally. HELL, they even had to reanimate and redub half the movie for some reason, I forgot why he said that ended up happening. He also talks about how there was this whole scene about the Owl making a squirrel pie, said squirrel still being alive and protesting the entire notion
As a kid I actually loved this movie, but with a Norwegian Dub. The Norwegian dub was quite different, the kid sounded like normal kid not a cutesy. The farm animal characters was dubbed by a band called Vazalina Bilopphøgers who was a kind of corney but funny band. Their lead singer, who had the voice of Chanteeclare, had been doing Norwegian Elvis impression for years. They fit their roles so well I actually thought it was a Norwegian movie, before the internet. They even made the owl song sound better, and after hearing the English version, they did not have much to work with. The voice work means a lot, and you can hear the Norwegian dubbers had a great time giving life to the characters. But yes, the movie is definitely for small kids, but I still get a bit of good nostalgia when I see it :)

2:30 Chanticleer is actually the name of a rooster that appears in medieval European folktales, mostly alongside Reynard the Fox. So, yes, while the name sounds extravagant, it's a fitting choice, considering that the Chanticleer of this movie is supposed to be a storybook character.
I think the reason the sun rose without Chanacleir is explained right in the beginning. It said that the sun came up, took a look around, and went back to sleep. Best explanation I can come up with

An interview with Bluth had the revelation on why the sun rose without Chanticleer crowing. According to him, the sun had gotten so used to rising at the time when Chanticleer crows that it did so subconsciously no matter if it was called by him or not. After the other animals then toss out Chanticleer, the sun became angry at them and refused to rise until Chanticleer returned.
I met Bluth at a convention recently and asked him about it and he told me that Chanticleer's crowing never brought up the sun. He only thought it did, and the sun rises at the same time he would crow was pure coincidence.
@Ahmed Malaki The film is based on old play called (Chantecler), and Don wanted to adapt it. However the film went through changes due to Test Screening, which may have ruined the film. Ever since All Dogs go to Heaven bombed at the box-office, it felt like Don lost creative control with his films, except for Anastasia and Bartok.
When I was younger, I always thought the reason he was dreaming that up was because the story was all about his fear. The Grand Duke of Owls was the manifestation of all of his fear, which is why he kept insisting he wasn't afraid, although he was. As for Chanticleer, I always thought he was supposed to represent Edmond's courage, and the Sun actually represented Edmund's happiness and courage. The sun didn't rise because Edmond was afraid of what would happen to the farm, and the other characters were parts of his personality, which is why they came on the way. The Duke, being his fears, start to take over his dreams as he feels fear about what will happen to his farm. But he eventually gains his courage (Chanticleer) back after working to get it back. The reason it was like the book, was because he's a child and he based it on the story due to his imagination, this also explains the artistic story. And now I realise, even as a kid, I looked too far into things.

Just to clarify, Edmund doesn't say, "I'm a furry!" He actually says, "I'm all furry!" It's just that the kid is SO bad at talking (fucking great attribute to have as an ACTOR) that you can't make sense of half of what he says.

The name "Chanticleer" is actually kind of witty. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, is an arrangement of several tales told by different narrators written in the Medieval times. This story is also a stage play. Basically a bunch of different people are taking a religious pilgrimage and tell each other stories along the way to entertain each other. One such story is the Prioress' story or rather "The Nun's" story in which she tells a tale of a cocky Rooster named Chanticleer trying to win over the love of a Hen while also trying to not get eaten by a fox. So, the Rooster's name in this is actually kind of a cool nod that only parents would get. I dig it.
I think the name actually originate from "Chantecler" by the french playsmith, Edmond Rostand (hence the name of the kid), wich is basically the same story... without that friggin' kid.
Actually, _Chanticleer_ dates back much earlier than that-the 14th century if you can believe it. It's a chiefly literary word cited by plenty of accredited English dictionaries. Oxford Languages defines it as "a name given to a rooster, especially in fairy tales."
Hey! Titan A.E. was pretty awesome! At least it strayed away from the Disney formula and tried something new, eh? Plus it's got blood and turns Nathan Lane, the obvious voice of Timon, into a creepy sub-comedy villain...who gets his neck broken because this is not a movie for kids.
This is one of those bizarre moments where I'm watching and hearing scenes from an extremely nostalgic movie I haven't seen since I was very little. It elicits all these strange emotions and memories I haven't accessed for a very, very long time. My dad actually took me to see it in theaters. My parents gave it to me on VHS later and I watched it endlessly. This is a very surreal and strange moment lol.
I can't remember ANYTHING about this movie except that a little boy gets turned into a kitten. I always wanted to know what it was called, because I thought the only thing I remember was pretty interesting. After finding this review, I really want to forget that I actually watched this movie...
I loved this film as a kid and I still love this film. Whenever I had a nightmare or couldn't sleep, I go into the living room and watch it. I still have the VHS because I could never find the dvd version. I love all the songs too.

Patrice Kelly I also liked this film. I think it suffered from the fact that it was an attempt at updating a play that was a satire about how modernist beliefs can't hold a candle to good old fashioned romanticism that the piece all of a sudden makes a lot of sense. The original story it's based on is a satirical allegory, using the farm animals as stand ins for artistic movements of Turn of the Century Paris. It's an attack on cynicism and celebration of Romanticism in general. The sun may have come up without Chanticleer, but he redefines his purpose as being to wake up the farm. I can see why Bluth would be attracted to such a piece, as he most certainly in his art was a Romantic first and foremost. But as an adult I think it's a poor choice of source material to adapt into a children's film. The allegory is muddled and lost making what elements that remain seem weird or out of place. He should have instead gone the adult route with the film IMO and approached the material more seriously if it expressed an artistic sentiment he identified with. So while I like certain parts of the film, I'll admit there's some problems the film has (the critic points out a few), which come IMO from Bluth trying to turn a satiric allegory into a children's film and failing miserably.

DarkLordFluffee Admittedly I wiki'd it (because for the longest time I thought it a loose adaptation of Reynard the Fox's Chanticleer or Geoffrey Chaucer's Chanticleer from The Nun's Priest Tale), but then after doing so I checked out the play (Chantecler), and yes it fits. Almost all the elements that I liked about the film are there in the original play. There is no real life human child, but that child's name is actually a nod to the author of the original play: Edmond Rostand--the "father" of the Neo-Romantic movement, best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac, and another of his plays Les Romansques was adapted in the 1960s into the longest running musical of all time: The Fantasticks. He ran contrary to the styles of the time in theatre, which were Realism (Ibsen's The Doll's House), and Naturalism (Strindberg's Miss Julie), which are very cynical artistic movements in comparison to Romanticism. While Bluth makes some fumbles with the story in trying to update it for a modern audience, he largely sticks to the greater themes of the original story (which you should do when adapting IMO). Those themes being: the triumph of idealism and sincerity over cynicism and artificiality (Rostand's critique was that "realism" was an artificial construct of reality, and not actual reality itself--which he actually is correct about IMO--the best way to think about "Realism" in artistic movements is it's as real as a family portrait is a real representation of the day to day life and relationships within a family; Realism thus is a "cleaned up" version of reality). Where Bluth actually manages to capture this surprisingly is with the Elvis and Rock 'n' Roll comparisons. The old old argument about Elvis and early Rock 'n' Roll (think 1950s RnR) is that there was always a duel between people over how sincere or artificial it was. As the 1950s turned into the early 1960s, those seeking a more "sincere" form of music turned to Folk music. It was especially a hot topic in those days and is the basis from which all modern conversation of "selling out" artistically originates from. There's actually an old Twilight Zone episode about this cultural debate that was going on at the time that stars Bing Crosby's son. It's the second to last episode, premiering in 1964. The Twilight Zone episode "Come Wander With Me" is when Crosby as an Elvis stand-in who's named the "Rockabilly Kid" wanders into a backwoods place to try and find an old folk song that he can record and then go and exploit by fiddling around with the tune to "make it popular" (playing it at a faster tempo, and possibly adjust its lyrics), until it's as far from the honest sincere song it started out as. It should be also noted that the anti-artificiality viewpoint also comes from the old Peter, Paul, and Mary interview where they critiqued the Mamas and the Papas by pointing out how the sincerity on the lyrics has been lost in the transition the group made from folk to rock musicians. It later influenced their song "I dig Rock 'n' Roll Music" where they take a satirical dig at the pretensions of Rock 'n' Roll musicians popular in that day (including the Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones IIRC), as well as the pretensions of the music system which supports such artists and keeps them from being honest, as the lyrics: "but if I really say it, the radio won't play it" indicate. The thing about that is all that thematic modernization is sure to go over most of the kids' heads watching this film, as most kids won't have all that 1950s and 1960s cultural context to fall back upon when viewing the film (I did, but then my parents were old enough to be my grandparents). But here's a quick once over on the film: Like Elvis & early Rock 'n' Roll, Chanticleer has humble and sincere roots--based in the countryside and with a rather simplistic world view. Like Elvis, Chanticleer left the countryside for the city--a place always associated with artificiality in these types of stories. It's here that Chanticleer finds a new home and a way of living once he's been rejected from his homeboy roots. In the city Chanticleer manages to make a name for himself, but in order to do so he has to have a certain stage presence which is build on a lie or pretension. Success has gone and created a persona for Chanticleer in the big city to live out as a "rock star", where popularity has corrupted what was good and honest about the music, as instead Chanticleer has to deliver what the audience wants or expects rather than being sincere. Elvis notably became like this when he settled in as an act in Las Vegas. Gone was the simple but humble man with an acoustic guitar, and in his stead was a strutting peacock with sequenced suits in Las Vegas. So in all honesty, the modernization does work, but the problems is no kid is going to get all of that, and by 1992, most of the people who listened to the early "honest" Rock 'n' Roll are moving out of the parenting stage, so it makes even less sense if you're trying to reach out to the parents of the kids aimed at watching this film. The rest of the film is about how Chanticleer is rescued from the shackles of reality and artificiality and returns to bring a new birth of a romantic ideal by returning to the farm and abandoning his city persona. Complements to the artificiality vs honesty can bee seen with Edmond being turned into a cat (an artificial identity for Edmond, based on him being a supposed "fraidy cat" which explains the supposed Big Lipped Alligator moment, where Edmond begins to challenge the identity that's been falsely imposed upon him of being a "fraidy cat"), and the slight nod to 1950s childhood culture with the Davy Crockett hat which is another hint of artificiality as the Davy Crockett of legend and tall tale as portrayed in the 1950s, is a far try from the actual man's life. And likewise it's when Edmond strips the Grand Duke of Owls of all his pretension (hence the magic--which does nothing but create artificiality) by stripping him bear with bare bones honesty (it's been a while since I've seen the film, but I recall Edmond having a stripping down of the Owl which is why he ends up unconscious in the first place--in an attempt to shut the truth up--and once Edmond has proven himself brave and honest, his artificial identity as a "fraidy cat" falls away). The ideas in general are very much a thematic complement to the original story's allegory, and all are built around the greater themes of the original story's allegory, attempting to make it more "modern", but it does create problems as it does this (the biggest being: finding a need for bringing Chanticleer back from the city as the critic points out here with the measly explanation of the sun which contradicts the earlier piece of storytelling lifted from the original source material) which is where the film begins to falter is as he's so set on his rock 'n' roll commentary, that he either ignores or makes problems for himself in the narrative of the rest of the film. And adding in Edmond as a character as an attempt to further anchor a more adult story in the children's entertainment section, further drags the film down as the child actor really brings the film down. In the end there's a lot of ambition to admire in Rock-a-Doodle, and the critic's critque of "mad libs" doesn't really work (though it makes for a snappy joke). The problem is Bluth tries too hard to shoehorn the modern interpretation that he creates problems for himself, and he dates himself with concerns that were more important in the 1950s and 1960s, and were ancient history by 1992.
Ooh! I can help with that! See, at the very beginning, Edmund was willing to throw himself out into that storm to help with the farming because he was a "big enough" to be "one of the boys" and was brave enough to call for Chanticleer out that window. That kind of courage was lost when he was turned into a kitten by the Grand Duke of Owls. Given the phrase "fraidy cat" was cleverly put because he (mostly) couldn't believe that he can even find Chanticleer and bring him back to the farm. Throughout the film, until that "episode" came up, he was VERY scared and unsure if he could do anything (like unhooking the trailer from Pinky's Cadillac, for example). Afterwards, he could have realized that he's still himself, albeit as a kitten and not a boy and (literally) shattered his denials about being scared in the first place. He was back to taking chances. He proved how brave he became once again by encouraging Chanticleer to crow to the point of getting the life literally choked out of him by the Duke's magic. Such courage was greeted by Pattu and the other Farmfolk joining in the rally to help Chanticleer crow.
My grandma had a VHS copy of this movie many years ago. Fun Fact: The kid who played Edmond, Toby Scott Ganger, was also Anthony in that one episode of Ren and Stimpy, which my parents always despised. Another fun fact: Toby and I both share the same birthday.
I love this movie. Yes it's not Bluth's best and it'd be the lesser of his favourite films of mine, but it's so quirky and weird and I like the music and animation. I found it funny, too. Plus, Chanticleer's tale comes from Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" which in turn comes from a French folk tale; weird story made weirder by Bluth was not originally his weird creation.
I personally enjoyed Titan A.E. it was probably the first movie I saw where humans get their asses handed to them and Earth blowing up. Not saying it's perfect, but it was enjoyable.
I also really enjoyed that movie as a kid and I still maintain that it's a good one. It's flawed and had at least half of its content eliminated for various reasons, but the remains are still entertaining and I always thought that the Dredge were pretty creative. I liked the majority of the characters and the animation is still top-notch in my book.
This owl HAUNTED my nightmares when I was 4-7, and I still loved it. As an adult, I would prefer to show my kids Don Bluth movies over Disney movies from the same era. Everyone I have ever met has had a strong visceral emotional reaction to at least one Don Bluth movie that dwarfs that of Disney films. If Howard Ashman and Alan Meinkin had partnered with Blush instead of Disney, we would be living in a very different world.

For those wondering, "Chanteclair" in French (or "Chantecler" in Old French / Anglo-normand) comes from a medieval french novel, le roman de Renart, and before, from the Canterbury Tales. It means "the one singing clearly" ("Singclear") or/and "the one singing at dawn" ("Singbright")
And this movie takes place in the 1950's. Because there is rock in it. I say 1950, because the cloths are old, there are 30's cars and the animation looks like 1930's. And the city has some 50's cars. I haven't even see the movie, i just saw this video days ago or something...

I was absolutely obsessed with this movie when I was a kid, and I still love it to this day!!!! It was my 2nd favorite movie from my childhood, behind The Road to El Dorado of course
Yeah, I think it was fine as well, but by early Don Bluth standards it was frankly rather forgettable. The design, animations and the premise I thought were really inspired, the characters and plot though were quite bland. Oh, and what I didn't even know yet - it apparently bombed so hard that Fox closed its animation department.
To be fair, Disney's films of the late 90s were still good, despite not being the studios' finest works. And yes, Anastasia, aside of being a great movie, it's much better than the garbage that Don Bluth released in the first half of the 90s.

Hey! Anastasia may not have been historically accurate, but if you ignore that, the songs are really good and The characters are well don't in my opinion. Ive heard people who disagree there, though. Either way it wasn't as bad as this stuff.
What's with Anastasia being not historically accurate? The History books people are given at schools today all over the World are less historically accurate than the Aristocats, and I don't see anyone complain.
I don't see why Anastasia's historical inaccuracy is a problem. It's not really pretending like it's historically accurate with blatend magic and very stylized characters everywhere.
I grew up on this movie - as well as Troll in Central Park, Anastasia, All Dogs, Pebble and the Penguin, Land Before Time, American Tail, Secret of Nihm. They're all favorites I still watch and love to this day!

Anastasia is so bad. Animator ability doesn't make the rest of the movie good. There's no substance in it, no reason for half the characters to exist, a really poor plot, some really terrifying faces... "I loved Anastasia" isn't the same as "Anastasia was amazing".

I still love this movie. It was weird, but it made me smile a lot as a kid. Also, NC failed to mention that he forgot to sing the sun awake at the beginning of the movie because the Duke sent thugs to beat the shit out of him.
I loved this movie as a kid: I was scared of the world and I liked the characters, including Eddy. Now the reason why I liked Eddy it was mostly due to the dubbing, which made him sound braver and less annoying, so I felt closer to him as a kid.

Hokay, so, fair warning, this is gonna get weird: The movie Rock-a-Doodle was based off of an early 1900s play called "Chanticler" by Edmond Rostand, the same guy that gave us Cyrano de Bergerac. This play was in turn inspired by the Medieval French morality tale of Chanticleer et Renard, or the Rooster and the Fox. Chanticleer comes from a French word that means "singer." The play actually had bugger-all to do with the old medieval story, save for the name of the main character. But the movie DEFINITELY took inspiration from the play. From Chanticleer convinced that his crowing rose the sun, to the conspiracy of night birds, to the dog, Patou, and the "golden pheasant" Goldie, and even the toads. It just happens to be set in the American South in the 50s. Aaaand Elvis. AAAAAAAAAND an Ambien fever dream...
Ok so for those who don't know, this movie is loosely based in a stage musical called chantecler(French for rooster I think) it's a fairly obscure play that yes, has vaguely the same plot as this. Though this is more of an updated modern day version of it. The play first premiered in 1910. The rooster was originally played by Maude Williams who was notably the first actress to Peter pan in the American stage version of Peter pan. The play has had on and off productions mostly in france
How is Titan AE and Anastasia mediocre? Both were beautifully animated, action packed, and in the case of Titan AE created an amazing sci fi world that I wish someone would exploit more.
TRIVIA TIEM! The plot hole regarding the sun coming up is actually explained in detail in the film. Remember Chanticleer was shown beaten to a pulp? That's because the duke hired this other rooster to beat him up, then crow to bring up the sun. When all was said and done, it made it seem like Chanticleer wasn't needed, so he was driven off.
I would have totally watched chanticleer's whole journey from Farm rooster to "Big City," Rooster when I was a kid. Absolutely loved the scenes in the city. If they'd focused on giving him a more direct "Hero's Journey" and had cut out the live-action stuff it could have been a much better, more focused movie. Still silly, and I absolutely loved this as a kid as is.
TBH I actually found the Duke of Owls extremely menacing and scary as a kid, especially when he choked Edmund with his breath.... something about his eyes when those breath-claws come out. Anybody else felt this way? Just me? K.

What an awesome movie to binge on VHS back in the day. It’s apparently on Amazon Prime right now so I scrubbed through a few sections and still get nostalgic from it. Some of your critiques are a bit stretchy (like the sun rising without Chanticleer, explained well in some of the other comments), but it was still nice seeing bits of this movie analyzed since it seems to be a rare find on YT.
I watched this when I was little so many times and I loved it and was always so scared. And also I watched it on Croatian and voice actors are way better and fit better (also goes for songs). But I still like the movie

One of my professors worked for Bluth for a while, and he worked on this movie.
He said that narrator wasn't even there at the start, and basically the entire dang movie was totally different to start. He always talks about how different the movie was going to be originally.
HELL, they even had to reanimate and redub half the movie for some reason, I forgot why he said that ended up happening.
He also talks about how there was this whole scene about the Owl making a squirrel pie, said squirrel still being alive and protesting the entire notion

As a kid I actually loved this movie, but with a Norwegian Dub. The Norwegian dub was quite different, the kid sounded like normal kid not a cutesy. The farm animal characters was dubbed by a band called Vazalina Bilopphøgers who was a kind of corney but funny band. Their lead singer, who had the voice of Chanteeclare, had been doing Norwegian Elvis impression for years. They fit their roles so well I actually thought it was a Norwegian movie, before the internet. They even made the owl song sound better, and after hearing the English version, they did not have much to work with.
The voice work means a lot, and you can hear the Norwegian dubbers had a great time giving life to the characters.
But yes, the movie is definitely for small kids, but I still get a bit of good nostalgia when I see it :)

Rock-A-Doodle is a British and American venture produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios and Goldcrest Films. So the original dub was in English. The Norwegian version was adapted from the the English version. And no, the Norwegian version was in Norwegian, not English.

2:30 Chanticleer is actually the name of a rooster that appears in medieval European folktales, mostly alongside Reynard the Fox. So, yes, while the name sounds extravagant, it's a fitting choice, considering that the Chanticleer of this movie is supposed to be a storybook character.

An interview with Bluth had the revelation on why the sun rose without Chanticleer crowing. According to him, the sun had gotten so used to rising at the time when Chanticleer crows that it did so subconsciously no matter if it was called by him or not. After the other animals then toss out Chanticleer, the sun became angry at them and refused to rise until Chanticleer returned.

I met Bluth at a convention recently and asked him about it and he told me that Chanticleer's crowing never brought up the sun. He only thought it did, and the sun rises at the same time he would crow was pure coincidence.

@Ahmed Malaki The film is based on old play called (Chantecler), and Don wanted to adapt it. However the film went through changes due to Test Screening, which may have ruined the film. Ever since All Dogs go to Heaven bombed at the box-office, it felt like Don lost creative control with his films, except for Anastasia and Bartok.

When I was younger, I always thought the reason he was dreaming that up was because the story was all about his fear.
The Grand Duke of Owls was the manifestation of all of his fear, which is why he kept insisting he wasn't afraid, although he was.
As for Chanticleer, I always thought he was supposed to represent Edmond's courage, and the Sun actually represented Edmund's happiness and courage.
The sun didn't rise because Edmond was afraid of what would happen to the farm, and the other characters were parts of his personality, which is why they came on the way. The Duke, being his fears, start to take over his dreams as he feels fear about what will happen to his farm. But he eventually gains his courage (Chanticleer) back after working to get it back.
The reason it was like the book, was because he's a child and he based it on the story due to his imagination, this also explains the artistic story.
And now I realise, even as a kid, I looked too far into things.

The name "Chanticleer" is actually kind of witty. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, is an arrangement of several tales told by different narrators written in the Medieval times. This story is also a stage play. Basically a bunch of different people are taking a religious pilgrimage and tell each other stories along the way to entertain each other. One such story is the Prioress' story or rather "The Nun's" story in which she tells a tale of a cocky Rooster named Chanticleer trying to win over the love of a Hen while also trying to not get eaten by a fox. So, the Rooster's name in this is actually kind of a cool nod that only parents would get. I dig it.
I think the name actually originate from "Chantecler" by the french playsmith, Edmond Rostand (hence the name of the kid), wich is basically the same story... without that friggin' kid.

Hey! Titan A.E. was pretty awesome! At least it strayed away from the Disney formula and tried something new, eh? Plus it's got blood and turns Nathan Lane, the obvious voice of Timon, into a creepy sub-comedy villain...who gets his neck broken because this is not a movie for kids.

This is one of those bizarre moments where I'm watching and hearing scenes from an extremely nostalgic movie I haven't seen since I was very little. It elicits all these strange emotions and memories I haven't accessed for a very, very long time. My dad actually took me to see it in theaters. My parents gave it to me on VHS later and I watched it endlessly. This is a very surreal and strange moment lol.
I can't remember ANYTHING about this movie except that a little boy gets turned into a kitten. I always wanted to know what it was called, because I thought the only thing I remember was pretty interesting. After finding this review, I really want to forget that I actually watched this movie...

I loved this film as a kid and I still love this film. Whenever I had a nightmare or couldn't sleep, I go into the living room and watch it. I still have the VHS because I could never find the dvd version. I love all the songs too.

Patrice Kelly I know I feel like I am one of the few you genuinely liked this movie. Granted it's not my fav of his (that belongs to Anastasia) but at least it didn't scar me like his earlier movies.

Patrice Kelly I also liked this film. I think it suffered from the fact that it was an attempt at updating a play that was a satire about how modernist beliefs can't hold a candle to good old fashioned romanticism that the piece all of a sudden makes a lot of sense. The original story it's based on is a satirical allegory, using the farm animals as stand ins for artistic movements of Turn of the Century Paris. It's an attack on cynicism and celebration of Romanticism in general. The sun may have come up without Chanticleer, but he redefines his purpose as being to wake up the farm.
I can see why Bluth would be attracted to such a piece, as he most certainly in his art was a Romantic first and foremost. But as an adult I think it's a poor choice of source material to adapt into a children's film. The allegory is muddled and lost making what elements that remain seem weird or out of place. He should have instead gone the adult route with the film IMO and approached the material more seriously if it expressed an artistic sentiment he identified with.
So while I like certain parts of the film, I'll admit there's some problems the film has (the critic points out a few), which come IMO from Bluth trying to turn a satiric allegory into a children's film and failing miserably.

DarkLordFluffee Admittedly I wiki'd it (because for the longest time I thought it a loose adaptation of Reynard the Fox's Chanticleer or Geoffrey Chaucer's Chanticleer from The Nun's Priest Tale), but then after doing so I checked out the play (Chantecler), and yes it fits. Almost all the elements that I liked about the film are there in the original play. There is no real life human child, but that child's name is actually a nod to the author of the original play: Edmond Rostand--the "father" of the Neo-Romantic movement, best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac, and another of his plays Les Romansques was adapted in the 1960s into the longest running musical of all time: The Fantasticks. He ran contrary to the styles of the time in theatre, which were Realism (Ibsen's The Doll's House), and Naturalism (Strindberg's Miss Julie), which are very cynical artistic movements in comparison to Romanticism.
While Bluth makes some fumbles with the story in trying to update it for a modern audience, he largely sticks to the greater themes of the original story (which you should do when adapting IMO). Those themes being: the triumph of idealism and sincerity over cynicism and artificiality (Rostand's critique was that "realism" was an artificial construct of reality, and not actual reality itself--which he actually is correct about IMO--the best way to think about "Realism" in artistic movements is it's as real as a family portrait is a real representation of the day to day life and relationships within a family; Realism thus is a "cleaned up" version of reality). Where Bluth actually manages to capture this surprisingly is with the Elvis and Rock 'n' Roll comparisons.
The old old argument about Elvis and early Rock 'n' Roll (think 1950s RnR) is that there was always a duel between people over how sincere or artificial it was. As the 1950s turned into the early 1960s, those seeking a more "sincere" form of music turned to Folk music. It was especially a hot topic in those days and is the basis from which all modern conversation of "selling out" artistically originates from.
There's actually an old Twilight Zone episode about this cultural debate that was going on at the time that stars Bing Crosby's son. It's the second to last episode, premiering in 1964. The Twilight Zone episode "Come Wander With Me" is when Crosby as an Elvis stand-in who's named the "Rockabilly Kid" wanders into a backwoods place to try and find an old folk song that he can record and then go and exploit by fiddling around with the tune to "make it popular" (playing it at a faster tempo, and possibly adjust its lyrics), until it's as far from the honest sincere song it started out as.
It should be also noted that the anti-artificiality viewpoint also comes from the old Peter, Paul, and Mary interview where they critiqued the Mamas and the Papas by pointing out how the sincerity on the lyrics has been lost in the transition the group made from folk to rock musicians. It later influenced their song "I dig Rock 'n' Roll Music" where they take a satirical dig at the pretensions of Rock 'n' Roll musicians popular in that day (including the Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones IIRC), as well as the pretensions of the music system which supports such artists and keeps them from being honest, as the lyrics: "but if I really say it, the radio won't play it" indicate.
The thing about that is all that thematic modernization is sure to go over most of the kids' heads watching this film, as most kids won't have all that 1950s and 1960s cultural context to fall back upon when viewing the film (I did, but then my parents were old enough to be my grandparents). But here's a quick once over on the film:
Like Elvis & early Rock 'n' Roll, Chanticleer has humble and sincere roots--based in the countryside and with a rather simplistic world view. Like Elvis, Chanticleer left the countryside for the city--a place always associated with artificiality in these types of stories. It's here that Chanticleer finds a new home and a way of living once he's been rejected from his homeboy roots.
In the city Chanticleer manages to make a name for himself, but in order to do so he has to have a certain stage presence which is build on a lie or pretension. Success has gone and created a persona for Chanticleer in the big city to live out as a "rock star", where popularity has corrupted what was good and honest about the music, as instead Chanticleer has to deliver what the audience wants or expects rather than being sincere. Elvis notably became like this when he settled in as an act in Las Vegas. Gone was the simple but humble man with an acoustic guitar, and in his stead was a strutting peacock with sequenced suits in Las Vegas.
So in all honesty, the modernization does work, but the problems is no kid is going to get all of that, and by 1992, most of the people who listened to the early "honest" Rock 'n' Roll are moving out of the parenting stage, so it makes even less sense if you're trying to reach out to the parents of the kids aimed at watching this film.
The rest of the film is about how Chanticleer is rescued from the shackles of reality and artificiality and returns to bring a new birth of a romantic ideal by returning to the farm and abandoning his city persona.
Complements to the artificiality vs honesty can bee seen with Edmond being turned into a cat (an artificial identity for Edmond, based on him being a supposed "fraidy cat" which explains the supposed Big Lipped Alligator moment, where Edmond begins to challenge the identity that's been falsely imposed upon him of being a "fraidy cat"), and the slight nod to 1950s childhood culture with the Davy Crockett hat which is another hint of artificiality as the Davy Crockett of legend and tall tale as portrayed in the 1950s, is a far try from the actual man's life. And likewise it's when Edmond strips the Grand Duke of Owls of all his pretension (hence the magic--which does nothing but create artificiality) by stripping him bear with bare bones honesty (it's been a while since I've seen the film, but I recall Edmond having a stripping down of the Owl which is why he ends up unconscious in the first place--in an attempt to shut the truth up--and once Edmond has proven himself brave and honest, his artificial identity as a "fraidy cat" falls away).
The ideas in general are very much a thematic complement to the original story's allegory, and all are built around the greater themes of the original story's allegory, attempting to make it more "modern", but it does create problems as it does this (the biggest being: finding a need for bringing Chanticleer back from the city as the critic points out here with the measly explanation of the sun which contradicts the earlier piece of storytelling lifted from the original source material) which is where the film begins to falter is as he's so set on his rock 'n' roll commentary, that he either ignores or makes problems for himself in the narrative of the rest of the film. And adding in Edmond as a character as an attempt to further anchor a more adult story in the children's entertainment section, further drags the film down as the child actor really brings the film down.
In the end there's a lot of ambition to admire in Rock-a-Doodle, and the critic's critque of "mad libs" doesn't really work (though it makes for a snappy joke). The problem is Bluth tries too hard to shoehorn the modern interpretation that he creates problems for himself, and he dates himself with concerns that were more important in the 1950s and 1960s, and were ancient history by 1992.
I tried to watch the whole movie just to understand that psychotic episode during the chase. I still have trouble with that.

See, at the very beginning, Edmund was willing to throw himself out into that storm to help with the farming because he was a "big enough" to be "one of the boys" and was brave enough to call for Chanticleer out that window. That kind of courage was lost when he was turned into a kitten by the Grand Duke of Owls.
Given the phrase "fraidy cat" was cleverly put because he (mostly) couldn't believe that he can even find Chanticleer and bring him back to the farm. Throughout the film, until that "episode" came up, he was VERY scared and unsure if he could do anything (like unhooking the trailer from Pinky's Cadillac, for example). Afterwards, he could have realized that he's still himself, albeit as a kitten and not a boy and (literally) shattered his denials about being scared in the first place. He was back to taking chances.
He proved how brave he became once again by encouraging Chanticleer to crow to the point of getting the life literally choked out of him by the Duke's magic. Such courage was greeted by Pattu and the other Farmfolk joining in the rally to help Chanticleer crow.

I love this movie. Yes it's not Bluth's best and it'd be the lesser of his favourite films of mine, but it's so quirky and weird and I like the music and animation. I found it funny, too. Plus, Chanticleer's tale comes from Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" which in turn comes from a French folk tale; weird story made weirder by Bluth was not originally his weird creation.

I personally enjoyed Titan A.E. it was probably the first movie I saw where humans get their asses handed to them and Earth blowing up. Not saying it's perfect, but it was enjoyable.
I also really enjoyed that movie as a kid and I still maintain that it's a good one. It's flawed and had at least half of its content eliminated for various reasons, but the remains are still entertaining and I always thought that the Dredge were pretty creative. I liked the majority of the characters and the animation is still top-notch in my book.

This owl HAUNTED my nightmares when I was 4-7, and I still loved it. As an adult, I would prefer to show my kids Don Bluth movies over Disney movies from the same era. Everyone I have ever met has had a strong visceral emotional reaction to at least one Don Bluth movie that dwarfs that of Disney films. If Howard Ashman and Alan Meinkin had partnered with Blush instead of Disney, we would be living in a very different world.

For those wondering, "Chanteclair" in French (or "Chantecler" in Old French / Anglo-normand) comes from a medieval french novel, le roman de Renart, and before, from the Canterbury Tales. It means "the one singing clearly" ("Singclear") or/and "the one singing at dawn" ("Singbright")

Yeah, I think it was fine as well, but by early Don Bluth standards it was frankly rather forgettable. The design, animations and the premise I thought were really inspired, the characters and plot though were quite bland.
Oh, and what I didn't even know yet - it apparently bombed so hard that Fox closed its animation department.

To be fair, Disney's films of the late 90s were still good, despite not being the studios' finest works. And yes, Anastasia, aside of being a great movie, it's much better than the garbage that Don Bluth released in the first half of the 90s.
You know, this movie taught me very important lesson. It taught me to always be thankful that I own a crank powered flashlight (yes, a flashlight powered by a crank is a real thing that exists).

Hey! Anastasia may not have been historically accurate, but if you ignore that, the songs are really good and The characters are well don't in my opinion. Ive heard people who disagree there, though.

The characters were pretty great. I was genuinely invested in the love story.
Anastasia was a badass protagonist. She defeated (this version of) Rasputin all by herself.
What's with Anastasia being not historically accurate? The History books people are given at schools today all over the World are less historically accurate than the Aristocats, and I don't see anyone complain.

I don't see why Anastasia's historical inaccuracy is a problem. It's not really pretending like it's historically accurate with blatend magic and very stylized characters everywhere.
I grew up on this movie - as well as Troll in Central Park, Anastasia, All Dogs, Pebble and the Penguin, Land Before Time, American Tail, Secret of Nihm. They're all favorites I still watch and love to this day!

At least his acting was good, unlike the likes of Jake Lloyd and 90% of other child actors. A little realism in voice choices never hurt anyone.

2:45 Oooooohh, I fucking loved the grand duke of owls. He was de definitely the highlight of the movie for me. Why? Because he wanted to kill all the protagonists and I was 100% on board with that.

Anastasia is so bad. Animator ability doesn't make the rest of the movie good. There's no substance in it, no reason for half the characters to exist, a really poor plot, some really terrifying faces... "I loved Anastasia" isn't the same as "Anastasia was amazing".

I still love this movie. It was weird, but it made me smile a lot as a kid. Also, NC failed to mention that he forgot to sing the sun awake at the beginning of the movie because the Duke sent thugs to beat the shit out of him.

I loved this movie as a kid: I was scared of the world and I liked the characters, including Eddy.
Now the reason why I liked Eddy it was mostly due to the dubbing, which made him sound braver and less annoying, so I felt closer to him as a kid.
The only bad Don Bluth was Troll in Central Park. This one was fine. Pebble & Penguin was fine. The rest are Amazing, Secret of NIMH being the best.

Hokay, so, fair warning, this is gonna get weird: The movie Rock-a-Doodle was based off of an early 1900s play called "Chanticler" by Edmond Rostand, the same guy that gave us Cyrano de Bergerac. This play was in turn inspired by the Medieval French morality tale of Chanticleer et Renard, or the Rooster and the Fox. Chanticleer comes from a French word that means "singer." The play actually had bugger-all to do with the old medieval story, save for the name of the main character. But the movie DEFINITELY took inspiration from the play. From Chanticleer convinced that his crowing rose the sun, to the conspiracy of night birds, to the dog, Patou, and the "golden pheasant" Goldie, and even the toads. It just happens to be set in the American South in the 50s. Aaaand Elvis. AAAAAAAAAND an Ambien fever dream...
Ok so for those who don't know, this movie is loosely based in a stage musical called chantecler(French for rooster I think) it's a fairly obscure play that yes, has vaguely the same plot as this. Though this is more of an updated modern day version of it. The play first premiered in 1910. The rooster was originally played by Maude Williams who was notably the first actress to Peter pan in the American stage version of Peter pan. The play has had on and off productions mostly in france

The plot hole regarding the sun coming up is actually explained in detail in the film. Remember Chanticleer was shown beaten to a pulp? That's because the duke hired this other rooster to beat him up, then crow to bring up the sun. When all was said and done, it made it seem like Chanticleer wasn't needed, so he was driven off.
That bit about the voice actor sneaking away had me crying 😂
I would have totally watched chanticleer's whole journey from Farm rooster to "Big City," Rooster when I was a kid. Absolutely loved the scenes in the city. If they'd focused on giving him a more direct "Hero's Journey" and had cut out the live-action stuff it could have been a much better, more focused movie. Still silly, and I absolutely loved this as a kid as is.

I loved this movie so much as a kid, but looking back I now understand why it "got lost" after I insisted on watching it every morning when I was 5.
What an awesome movie to binge on VHS back in the day. It’s apparently on Amazon Prime right now so I scrubbed through a few sections and still get nostalgic from it.
Some of your critiques are a bit stretchy (like the sun rising without Chanticleer, explained well in some of the other comments), but it was still nice seeing bits of this movie analyzed since it seems to be a rare find on YT.

I think the Wizard of Oz is the only movie to ever pull off the "it was all a dream" twist. And even that's probably debatable.
