It's no secret this game is good. I beat it yesterday and I have to say, this is one of the best games I have every played. Great video on it too. It's kind of hard to explain this game to someone. You kind of just have to play it.
Though there is a good reason why this game will only be niche. It plays so differently from other games that most people won't like it I know I wouldn't like it if it was the gameplay alone. But this game isn't great for the gameplay alone. The story and style are the reasons why you play this game

To be fair, Killer is Dead was actually written by four people and not directed by Suda himself. There probably wasn't much of a unified vision for what the game was going to be.
Comment’s old but I played Killer is Dead enough to know what was the vision. Mondo was destined for the moon... to be the man on the moon.Bryon Nd Viv knew that if he kept killing malice would soon consume him. David was the one to make the events happen by sending malice on the Earth from the dark side of the moon. David killing their mother represented David acquiring the Sun... in our case.... Mondo’s sun... (hence why he’s more colder and down TO EARTH) Edit: The malice effects other ppl different. David drunk off malice considered becoming king. The man on the moon
It's quality is no secret, but thank somebody that its gotten a modern rerelease that's so excellently done that people can play it for many more years. Really a game best digested over the span of several years, at least my experience of it.
I agree. When the game first came out, I was too young to appreciate what it meant. And now, well, this is the perfect time to play it. The president is whining like a baby and saying the election is rigged. He's like a character from Killer 7 himself.

It's funny how you mention David Lynch in the same video of a game directed by SUDA51, because his influence can be seen in a lot of his games, subtle though it may be. A lot of people like to point to Hidetaka Suehiro's Deadly Premonition as Lynch-inspired for its obvious allusions to Twin Peaks, but the Grasshopper games that Suda himself has directed display this, in the sense that what you see may either be taken figoratively, literally, or just be a red herring that throws off everything you thought you knew. I also like how he took the idea of Killer Bob from Twin Peaks, and the brief idea displayed that he may either be an evil spirit or the representation of man's horrible deeds, and applied that very same idea to Kamui Uehara in The Silver Case. Where Kamui might either be this omnipresent being that literally gives people Criminal Power, or is just a product of mass hysteria and a scapegoat for the police to kill a docile, innocent man for the sake of putting the world's mind at ease. Anyway, good video. I'm always interested to see how many people interprit this near-impenetrable marvel of a game.
This was truly enlightening. I've just finished the game for the first time and even though I thoroughly enjoyed its gameplay, mechanics, aesthetics, artistic choice, etc, I was at a complete loss regarding almost everything else. Thanks for helping me unpack all of that.

This video is the reason I won’t make a Killer 7 video. You covered everything pretty much perfectly. I would save this as the definitive commentary on the game. 👏🏾 👏🏾
I loved killer7 the first time I played it. I played it more and more to piece together the plotpuzzle and infer the details of the world based on the details therein in addition to the events of the story. If the game had a spoonfed story and everything was obvious I would have enjoyed it far less. Its one of those amazing works(like many from Lynch) that have so many subtle details that the more you delve the more you can piece together from little things like how Curtis Blackburn may have actually been the LEAST bad guy in his chapter which was full of bad guys(including the killer7) or how Clemence's story is wonderfully open for continuation as one who inherited part of the Yakumo or how Garcian opened the safe in Smile using muscle memory. It always seems to leave you with at least something unanswered, but the feeling that the answer might be there in the details whether it really is or not. The potential tie-ins with the stories and political climates from "The Silver Case" and "Flower, Sun, and Rain" involving things like the MasPro systems. The initial feeling I had from playing the game was legendary for me and I get to taste that again just a bit on replay, but the real thing that keeps me coming back is the minutiae which have been expertly given great value. The game(an insufficient word) is made to beg more from the player and convey that real-life experience of powerlessness that will vary depending on how much effort you put in. That feeling is so strong in killer7 that overcoming amounts of that powerlessness feels greater than any "achievements" another game might have, but you never overcome all of it.
'I didn't understand killer7, but in some way I felt it understood me.' what a delightfully concise way to describe the magnetism and rent free manner in which this game consumes you. great video.

Really great analysis! This game is one of the most inspiring and audacious works of art I've ever encountered and I think you hit the nail on the head about how trying to parse out a strict narrative from the plot is a bit beside the point of what it's trying to do. One of the devices that I found really powerful here is certain sequences, like one you reference in the spoiler section of the video, that make you "play" through them but don't actually give you any agency on their outcome. This is sort of a microcosm of your analysis of the game as a whole, and a device that is a bit unique to the video game medium. A film has no illusion of control, whereas a game does. But as Killer 7 shows, any control is often merely illusory.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from playing Killer7 three times so far, it’s that its best to make your own interpretation of the insane things which happen, similar to all of David Lynch’s films or tv shows. I also highly recommend playing The Silver Case and Flower, Sun, and Rain, both directed by Suda51 and both, including K7, tie into the Kill the Past trilogy. Think of Yoko Taro’s Drakengard/Nier shared universe. Also, look up the timeline supplement from Hand in Killer7. It was actually meant to be much more broad and epic in scope and time.
My friend wrote this game off as a game with bad gameplay. He would never give a reason why, he would just say the gameplay was bad. If he doesn't want to play it because it doesn't look interesting to him, thats ok, but writting it off as bad without knowing much at all is really bad.

I have several questions. What was the screaming in garcians apartment? Is angel the hanging ghost guy? Why did garcian kill the killer 7? why were garcians eyes green in the last level? What happened to Samanta in that onepart? Why is the old man in the wheel chair considered the most powerful when he's a vegetable most of the time. Who was the girl under the anime girl mask. Etc etc.
About those screams, It is said that Garcian killed the Smith Syndicate in the past and kept their leader locked in a safe. I belive the screams to be fragments of Garcian's traumatic past after hearing that poor man screaming for help in a locked safe.
I'm surprised Adam Curtis didn't get a mention in this.
