This guitar was completed a few years ago and wanted to recompile this into an artsy timelapse. trying to pull together some of my old work into better faster audience friendly vids. This is a multi laminate guitar made from Mahogany and Maple like a chris craft boat from back in the days. The Gibson firebird is iconic and this is my take on an awesome guitar.
If you like guitar building content and an awesome guy, please like, subscribe and comment on my vids. I try to answer most questions!

This guy must be good, he has ten fingers.
That was awesome watching that guitar being built. That is one of those guitars you would be immediately drawn to in a store, studio, on stage.
thanks man!
Whilst I don't like the firebird shape, I have to say that this guitar turned out very well and the craftsmanship of it looked incredible. It looks like a great guitar to play too which is one of the most important factors.
Wow! What an undertaking, going with the true neck-through design! I love the organic quality of the laminates and the natural finish. This guitar looks so special, it needs a name.
This is the coolest Firebird copy I’ve ever seen! I also love the offset fret inlays! The neck-through construction reminds me of my Ibanez Musician guitar. This Firebird has tons of character to it! I’m a fan of the bird’s eye maple fretboard as well!
I could definitely get behind your channel for life
Probably my favorite build!
Like I have said before: make a range of these and I'll take 1! Preferably with 3 p90's and maybe even string through would be awesome.
Wow super interesting to see a neck-thru guitar some together from start to finish. Firebird shap deserves more love. Great job and thanks for the vid!
I love the anticlimax at the end!
LOL!!
Hey dude,
You should put the link to the full vid in the description !
I remember this build... Epic !
How cool, I JUST listened to Justin play this song, and lo and behold! No wonder your work is so inspired. Great job!
Wouaaââââhhh.... Great work !!!... It's a very beautiful guitar. I like it.
In my side I will set up a Floyd Rose Pro or a Lo Pro Edge. It's only a question of taste, my taste.
Anyway, this is a huge, great and very beautiful guitar Firebird.
Bravo !
Phil from Dunkirk
I don't comment often, but I have to say- this is a damn fine guitar. Very beautiful. Well done!
this may be my favorite guitar that you have made, great job.
I agree
this is the exact type of vids i like
One of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen
You said it man! Disgustingly beautiful!
I thoroughly enjoyed your craftsmanship. Thanx
right from the start you make NECK THROUGH! no cheezy junk ass bolt on! right on man.
I'd love to see someone make this and route away the sides so it looks like it has wings. That would make it look even better in my opinion.
Beautiful build
Beautiful build Derek! I remember this build, very nice!
Thanks for sharing this with us, Pam
Another Beautiful Piece of Art!!!!
Beautiful guitar body/neck. FYI Waterlox will keep, hardening for about 2-3 months, depending on ventilation, humidity, number of coats and temp.
Wow!! Great craftsmanship and the time lapse was amazing to watch!
Come on man! It's at LEAST 10X harder than you just made it look. Another gorgeous guitfiddle Big D!!
Neck through, check.
Non-angled tuners, check.
Mini humbuckers, check.
This is actually more of a Firebird than what Gibson does nowadays. Sadly.
Great job!
Very cool, thanks for sharing.
weird coincidence - or maybe youtube is reading my mind now - but i have a long piece of old broken furniture mahogany i had planned on using to make a neck through firebird... im currently working on a surf themed solid body electric ukulele with a 3/4 through neck (its an experiment), and an LP junior doublecut (i plan on painting it candy apple pelham blue, which might not work out... we'll see)
i like your choice of tele style metal pot knobs...
i suppose the multi-piece laminate neck design eliminates the need for a scarf joint... thats very interesting - i'll keep that in mind for future builds.. thanks!
That's a real beauty!👍😎🎸🎶
Looks great
I LOVED how thin the guitar was. I was like ''FINALLY '' a Guitar that's not thick at all. How much would it cost Me to have You make Me one of these Thin Firebirds?
Fantastic!
That is a beautiful guitar 🙌✌️👏 awesome job mate
Your a true guitar maker craftsman
Hi! I don't have words to express my delight of seeing this as I don't have enough money to pay for such a guitar, but I do have a crystal soul and music in my head , so would you be so kind and noble to present 🎁 one of the numerous guitars you built, you will build many others, but that one will be in my lonely heart ❤! Hallowed be thy name !!!! 🙏 Amen
I remember that build, and thoroughly enjoyed the videos.
The beginning with all those laminate strips makes me drool...
Incredibly Awesome Big D! Thank you for making this video for us.
Superb looking guitar. What about a coloured laminate next time blue or green maybe.
Very cool.
I love firebird . Your version is awesome!
Wow very nice!!!!
I didn't quite understand what you meant by tuners biting, but I really love these tuners on my own Firebird simply because how easy it is to change the strings, tune up, and tune down.
the thicker strings pulled down on the tuner edge
@@bigdguitars Like the tip of the string catching on the lip of the tuner or something? If that's the case, I usually leave quite a lot of string sticking out, so it would be much easier to restring if needed (here are the pics: imgur.com/a/rlGG76p).
The only gripe I have with these tuners is that you really need to pinch the string real hard or they'll be slipping all the time (especially the unwound ones).
Also, forgot to say, great job on the guitar. Really educational! 👍
Amazing and a super fun video of your build and ever-impressive skills. Wow.
Time lapse rules!
I'm traveling through time!
Awesome love it.
Just don't run it over with a crane
Only Buy Genuine Chris-Craft. Seriously though... that's really sweet Derek. Nice work. Cheers! Chris.
Beautiful guitar nice work
Longer vids with multiple parts and more details are fine too. They target a different kind of audience.
I think you need both the timelaps and the longer ones.
Magnifique , quel beau travail
I really like firebirds and yours is great !
Nice work !
Great build! I like glue-lam bodoies the best, I believe there stronger! I wanna make one now!!
Adorei ver em time lapse.
Quanto tempo será que levou terminar esse trabalho?
Great work!
Looks amazing bro! Great job!! 🎸🎸👍
Sweet
I had no idea such craftsmanship went into a guitar. I wonder how much this puppy cost
all those lams glued together was it bright
I went with lower output GFS stuff. poor pickup choice
@@bigdguitars yeah so it was bright - I figured as much the cure for a bright naturally sounding guitar LIKE THIS IS OVER WOUND FRALIN OR SEYMOUR DUNCAN ANTIQUITIES
@@bigdguitars The hotter the better non ceramic of course 8 thousand ohms 9 and 10 in the bridge
Nice job! I am a luthier hobbyist but I have only made bolt on neck models so far. I have been planning to do a neck through model and I picked up some tips from your video. Good attention to detail, craftsmanship and good looking guitar.
Totally awesome. But the time lapse speed gave me serious anxiety lol!
凄いなー
beautiful‼️
NICE
🔯☮️🇯🇵🤘👍
Thats a awesome job on that derek !! It reminds me of what Vantage did back in the day with there multi laminate guitars they put out !! :)
Beautiful guitar! Your video is very inspiring to me :)
Have you ever used weldwood glue ? Strongest glue available for building boats.
Nice
wavey 🖖
Very Very Very Very beatifullllll 🇧🇷
nice one!
Great Job! But man,I don't know much about eletric guitar, but I play acoustic since 2011,and I know that solid woods give a very better tone and overall quality. So wouldn't be better If the guitar was made from fewer pieces? Aniway, your work is amazing
yea maybe. just thought this looked cool
sweet
D'you plan on doing the LP restore? This series is beauuuuuutiful!
Actually the one that got me hooked on you!
I didn't think of that one yet... I just edited the kevin bond one for the release next month. En minor is coming playing a bigdguitars: philanselmo.com/2019/03/07/en-minor-will-debut-at-psycho-las-vegas/
I'd like to A/B one made entirely with Hide glue, I bet the resonance and sustain would be noticeable.
Yea it would. Significant.
Es hermosisimaaaaaa te felicito que arte tenes mentis manos lo unico es que a mi me gustaría el puente más alejado.
DOPE AF 😍
Absolutely gorgeous work!
Serious question though: how does the guitar stay together being made of so many different pieces of wood opposed to being made of say, 3 pieces?
Like your jobs so much. ^^
(FC/from deep forest of North Thailand. ^^)
🤩
All that work and you cheaped out on the pick ups and hardware? I was also really hoping your were going to vintage burst it like a firebird. Right now it looks like a cutting board with cheap pickups.
Keep up the great work tho i fux with it
I want to build one with a HH configuration and a double locking floating whammy bridge.
Beautiful job! Just curious tho, what’s the name of the second song?
Gibson must be ogling it and going wow!
Go with Sprezels or Graph tech ratios. Babzic Full contact TOM bridge. Wrap around ???
Great video, excellent craftsmanship. I only wish you would have made your own body shape design.
Have you ever built a multi-scale guitar? how about a baritone multiscale ax?
😍😍😍😍
Why are Firebirds soooooo experience?
Oooooohhhhhh......
Your work s beautiful !
Are You for hire?
I have a neck thru Flying V style guitar with a Carvin neck. It is also butcher block. Could use a few tweaks.
Wonderfull
🥶
👌
Stunning!
Love the video as always. Beautiful guitar but a little busy for my personal tastes. Just me though.
Is that you on the guitar? Mr. Big D?🤣👍
いいギター🎸ですね!ズバリ、欲しい💘!
What size drill bit did you use to go from inside the back panel to the electronics and what size between the two pick-ups?
😻
do you have a video talking about neck pitch?
ok i c u 🥳
