Those Mirages were fast! I am old enough to remember them flying up in Queensland. I was working on stations and the Mirages would go over at treetop height - supersonic. It was where I learned that a noisy jet can sneak up on you and surprise you because there was no sound until after the aircraft had already passed overhead before the sonic boom hit. Used to scare the s**t out of me. They must have scared the s**t out of the Viet Cong in Vietnam. The station I worked on was owned by an ex-airforce pilot who gave permission for training over the station and they always did a supersonic pass over the homestead to let everyone know they were there and so someone could radio the helicopter pilots to advise them of Mirage training flights.

I vividly remember in 83 rescuing SQNLDR Kindler off JB after he had a flame out and ejected from his Mirage. I was on HMAS Hobart and filmed him and his mates as they conducted AA tracking runs. It was a foul day and sea state 5. That little yellow life raft was bloody hard to see even with 300 Mk 1 eyeballs.
they did a fly over schofields air show one year in the Mirage it was too low and going mark something and a woman next to me fell to the ground screaming with blood coming from her ear. i hit me in the chest like a horse kick it was a hell of a feeling
I read that in 1977, RAAF Mirages and US Navy F-14 Tomcats fought each other in mock dogfights. Results were that the RAAF Mirage pilots were the overwhelming victors. Does anyone have any more information on this, and what Tomcat squadrons were involved?
You are correct, the RAAF Mirages took on Tomcats from the USS Enterprise. The air battle took place over RAAF Base Williamtown, it was the ultimate airshow!
From Mirage Operational Highlights Oct 1976..... 77SQN aircraft engaged in combat and intercepts against eight types of aircraft belonging to the US and Australian Navy as part of the Kangaroo 2 exercise. The highlight was the dissimilar aircraft combat tactics against the USN F-14 Tomcats. Before the program commenced ten base pilots flew out to the USS Enterprise for a face to face briefing with F-14 aircrew. The missions flown highlighted the superiority of the Tomcat's long range kill capability, however, its vulnerability at close range against the Mirage was evident with some convincing gun kills by 77SQN pilots.
For the final phase of Exercise Kangaroo 2, 77SQN deployed to Townsville. The role of the Mirages was that of close air support and tactical photographic reconnaissance in support of Orange forces. Most of the hours flown were in transit from Townsville to the Shoal Water Bay exercise area. The F-14 Tomcats were successfully employed as air defence for Blue forces and claimed many Mirages in transit to the exercise area.
I believe the early to mid 1970's. A3-44 (pictured) came onto the 77 Squadron asset register during July 1974, following a major refurbishment at the Commonwealth Aircraft Factory Avalon. It has been filmed from the back seat of a Mirage IIID.
44 was in R4 service march 81 and BAZZ turner was the test pilot and I was one of the fitters on the service so this video would've been 81 or 82 and the company was GAF not CAC
In the last few seconds of the video VH-TAB can be heard on decent to FL190. VH-TAB was a DC-4 and then an A300 with TAA. I’m quite sure it’s not the DC-4 which would make it the A300 which was in service from late 1981 until early 1987.

This Mirage was at the Australian Aviation Museum Bankstown Airport for almost 20 years.

77 did the same with the F-15's from Japan in 78 . Even the macchis were from OCU were in on the fun.
Good ol malfunction junction. Gunnery and bombing was the best fun.

Keep hearing Krusha on the radio squak....Krusha was amongst the last gen of RAAF Mirage pilots. This footage most likely dates around 1985-87.
