Silent Hill 2 was good, but I’ve always wondered why it gets so much love. It wasn’t THAT good. Silent Hill 1 gave me nightmares. 3 was cool, killing folks with your eye lasers and whatnot, and (I know I’m in the minority) but I really liked The Room 🤷♀️
Omg me and my brother had to do that a few years ago so he could play kingdom hearts Edit: now that I remember we didn’t even have any memory cards so we had to try and complete the games we had all at once and leave it on for days lol
That built-in DVD player was absolutely BONKERS for when it released. DVD players alone were like $300+. I got a PS2 that Christmas, and by complete happenstance. Here's the story, and I promise it's a good one: I actually gave my mom $200 as buffer money, to help pay for it IF she found one. (I sold my N64 and all my games, controllers, accessories, etc. to get that cash. Wish I hadn't, now that I'm a retro collector, but how else do you get big cash at 15?) She went to over a dozen stores, and at like the 15th store (Circuit City, "Where service is state of the art") she went to the customer service desk and asked if they had any PS2s. She expected another "No." The worker went back into the stock room and get this: there was ONE left. It was a layaway that had been abandoned and not paid for. Whoever had put it on layaway hadn't claimed it in time, and the layaway had just expired an hour earlier! It was such an astronomically rare thing. There was even a woman behind my mom that asked for one, and my mom got the last one. (RIP that kid's Christmas) She slapped down the cash and got it. But there's more: So Christmas morning comes and I saw nothing that looked like a PS2 under the tree. I was disappointed, but I expected it, so it wasn't like, catastrophic. I opened a bunch of games and a memory card, etc etc. (I still wanted to have all that stuff for when I finally did get a PS2.) After everything was opened, and no PS2 to be seen, my mom says, "I'm so sorry that I couldn't find one. Let me go get the $200 you gave me." I suspected nothing, she played it off like a champ. Instead of coming back out with my money, she walks out with a wrapped box the size of a PS2. And I opened it and saw the beautiful deep blue box. Omfg. There's still a picture of me, clutching the half-opened gift with a gigantic smile of amazement on my face. I WAS FLOORED. You better believe I called like 4 of my friends and told them to come over immediately hahah It was the most memorable Christmas ever. I had Eternal Ring, Summoner and Contra for my first games. All 3 games are fantastic in their own right, and the graphical jump from the PS1/N64 era to that generation was... utterly astounding to say the least. So anyway. I'm like 35 now and I will still never forget that Christmas, to my dying day! Thanks for reading. 😎
@@408hex6 I actually found it, lol. But I wouldn't wanna put it all over the internet 😂 I had to find the actual physical picture because digital cameras were definitely not common then!
I've said for years that the PS2 will always be the best. When consoles switched to being dependent on internet, they have built in planned obsolescence. My ps3 is almost a brick now because of updates but my ps2 works just as good as when I first got it.
Today all you get are Battle royale, escape from takrov or games that rip off mechanics from another. Instead of asking for sequels or innovative IPs, they would rather want all games to be the same.
You guys completely missed out on the change brought about by the integrated circuit. By the time you hit the scene, the tech world was already moving a million miles an hour. Watching it get started was the real fun.
Lol man I gripe about this all the time to my brother. Buy a disc and have to wait 2 hours for it to download. .....or the other one that gets Irritating when you haven't played a game in a while and think oh that sounds fun it's still installed and nope their has been like 8 updates and you can't play until everything is updated. I miss just popping in a disc and playing.
I rememebr how crazy that game was and I also remember how disappointed I was when I came across the gta's that came out before gta 3 lmao holy fuck they were bad
If you think there's ever been a better time to play games than now you're crazy. Sure microtransactions are annoying but they only really effect AAA games and even then only some of them. This has been a bomb af year. It takes two, psychonauts 2, grime, outer wilds dlc, guardians of the Galaxy. Just off the top of my head.
@@ForeverMasterless wow that blows my mind.... i don't know if you are delusional or just a gen z kid who grew up without the games we were lucky enough to grow up with but i could easily pick one game from my era that would trump all five of those games in terms of quality and creativity. For every game you think of released this year in 2021 i could pick five from a select year between 1990-2004 that are irrefutably better. Not that i need to actually do that to prove some point on the internet but I'm just saying the graphics might of sucked but in terms of quality, creativity, world building, story, art design, sound/music etc that is how big the difference is between what we had and what we have so little of now with todays video games.
@@johnny5413 killer instinct,Mortal kombat, metal gear solid, golden eye Mario kart, nfl blitz, nba street I could even go back to castlevania, mike Tyson knock out, the adventures of Zelda “ gold cartridge” and that’s off the top of my head
Like some game companies don't wanna risk their buck on making new games anymore, just milking their games for an easy money. Like Rockstar Games or EA.
@@ForeverMasterless Look, I get that we’re kind of in an age of accessibility for games right now, but as someone who is gen z AND has tried both old and new generation games, I have to argue that current triple AAA console games right now feel a bit uninspiring and what I would consider stale.
I don't think we'll ever experience a generational leap like we did when we jumped from PS1 to PS2. It was wild. Sure, moving to PS3 and 360 was still pretty staggering but not at all on the same level. Just the polygon count alone really gives you an idea of what were talking about, Lara Croft was made of around 230 polygons while the main character in SH3 was close to 6000.
the problem is that most of devs didnt take advantage of the potential of the PS2. just look at MGS2 and 3, those graphcis are amazing. then you have other games which have shitty graphics or very shitty performance.
@@jayo4739 all those did were revolutionize what the pc was already doing with online gaming but they were very similar to what the xbox and ps2 were already doing

PS2 is the last pure mainstream console, where you didn’t need a day one patch and download a bunch of DLC to fully enjoy a game. It also has an absolute bonkers library with just an insane amount of variety. I remember people just owning one for the casual games like Buzz, Guitar Hero, Singstar etc. I definitely feel like it’s popularity will get a big resurgence the next few years or so. It’s still completely underexposed compared to the old Nintendo stuff.
I think the PS2 was the best in its generation, one of the best consoles in history. It was released 1-2 years sooner than its competitors in most countries. It was cheaper. And was literally the best way to watch DVDs which was the equivalent of UA-cam back in the day. With that said, the next generation (as a whole) was the better console generation. Hear me out. If you owned a Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 in the same house that was great. The Wii gave you lots of child and family friendly games, and the gimmick/motion gaming with your guests. The PS3 gave you a BluRay player and some of the best exclusives ever. And the 360 was a cheaper console, great graphics, and the best online multiplayer experience. So you had three distinct experiences during that eight year 2005-2013 period. During the five year 2000-2005 period of the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox. Well it wasn't as diverse. The online multiplayer was in its infancy. The GameCube had many great games, but nothing as special as the Wii with its power to get your grandparents to play. Whilst the PS2 was a great DVD player and had some great exclusives. As a whole, this generation wasn't as diverse as it's predecessor. Things got worse later with the WiiU, XB1, and PS4. That's when slow loading times, day one patches, and microtransactions became prominent. The midcycle "Pro" refresh was rather lackluster from the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Whilst the Nintendo Switch made for a disappointing WiiU upgrade for TV connected use, it was a revolutionary upgrade for anyone coming from a 3DS for Portable Console. The latest generation with PS5 and XSX is exciting, for the fact that the consoles have returned to competing against PC Gaming hardware wise. So I expect this is going not going to be a short 4-year lifespan but rather a lengthy 8-year one. In terms of "handhelds" we have the Valve SteamDeck (and it is a Console) which I think is going to be great for this generation. As for Nintendo, we don't know what they will release, but it's soon. According to their history it is a 2-year window (DSi XL to 3DS, or New 3DS-XL to Switch). And since we just got a "new" OLED Switch in 2021, I think that means Nintendo is halfway working on its next-gen console which they will release in November 2023. It is possible Nintendo will keep the Switch as a budget console for handhelds, and make it's next-gen console a Home/TV unit instead. We will have to wait and see.
I think a lot of it is underexposed because of that variety. Many people bought Nintendo's older consoles for their first party offerings and many people bought PlayStation's for their third party offerings. Most Nintendo console owners will have played a lot more games in common than PlayStation owners will have with each other due to the wider variety of third party offerings on those consoles.
Not only was it a low cost DVD player it was an entire gaming console. So many games was released for this 🔥🔥. This was truly a generation of great games !
Also a good stepping stone for the future of broadband online console gaming (THPS3 as a great example on how to do lobbies, chat, and host control). THPS4 and Timesplitters were great precursors in content sharing and free user content, eventually showing the true potential in Halo's Forge. I feel free user content sharing played a big part of the golden age of gaming
Could not agree more! I miss the days when a game was released as is. I'm so suck of these lazy development messes that get released with hundreds of bugs and predatory f2p "content"
I've still got mine, still play it regularly, and when I have mates over we still do the split screen action. Which is missing from 95% of games now days. Love it. Play it more than my PS5.

PS2 was my first DVD player, and considering I love video games, what a bonus that functionality was. I switched from VHS to DVD immediately, and within a few short months, my DVD collection exploded.... same thing with PS4 and blu-rays. I need to get my old PS2s fixed... especially considering I still have a large library of PS2 and a few PS1 titles.
Plus you save money on WiFi, game passes, the buy able dlc, and the overall cost of the games and as you rightly said the games are still great fun to play
@@frankwest321 you hit the nail on the coffin. I still play NBA street till this day. I think I have the best record in the world. My points are over a million too lol. I'm looking for NBA street 2 and NFL street and a few more games.
Not only was PS2 responsible for most of my beloved gaming memories, it was also the beginning of my musical career. I was 14 or 15 when I bought MUSIC 3000 and it was infinitely better than my elementary school music teacher. The tools it provided taught me almost every trick I still use in the music I make today on FL Studio 20. I still have two PS2's at my moms house in storage, they both have a faulty controller 1 ports. I think I should get them back and repair the ports so I can play those games again. It's funny how my friend miraculously got a PS5 but almost all of his library consists of upgraded PS4 titles. It's ridiculous that we have these state of the art powerhouses but barely any games that utilizes its full potential.
@@Gyrbae In My mind it sounded better in My memory however its sounds terrible to My ears now and that why I dont include Dance Ejay and Music 3000 as the start of Me making music or producing.
@@HOLLASOUNDS I still would. Ofcourse it sounds outdated by todays standards, it only had samples instead of an actual synthesis engine and had no mixer or effect section, but it's still a sequencer/arranger and the fun starts when you venture outside the presets. they need to stop messing with us and actually put the game on the physical hardware, it may be on there yes but it sure doesnt seem like it, im not looking forward to the day when they get rid of physical media, imagine everygame you buy moving forward cannot be traded in, lended and tied to an account, dark future for sure.
My dad bought a PS2 when it was launched in 2000. He didn't use it much but had a lot of great games. A few years ago he handed it down to me an to this day the console works just like it did 20 years ago

Sitting here with our 5 GHz chips and 32 gigs of ram, it's crazy to think about how so many of my absolute favorite games growing up ran on such a tiny fraction of that. I'm endlessly impressed by developers who managed to get this hardware to really sing.
at the time that 200mhz and 32mb of ram was not that much worse than 5ghz and 32gb of ram tbh. They were doing their best in terms of graphics and gameplay, and it wasn't much harder than today
I can guarantee you if developers took as much advantage of todays hardware as they did back then, we’d be seeing much better graphics and performance than we currently are. Just look at 360 and ps3 games for instance, some of them run at native hd resolution and have decently detailed textures and run smooth enough, and they did all that with 500 mb of ram. On top of that, some developers didn’t take advantage of the ps3s SPEs in the early days, so a lot of the games just ran on one cpu core.
The full backwards compatibility feature was the most important factor for me personally. The PS1 library was so strong, and when the PS2 came out I still had a massive backlog of amazing PS1 games to get around to.
I wish backwards compatibility was available on the ps4 going all the way back to ps2 or even 3. Evened numbered consoles with backwards compatibility. Great idea
@@walterreedjr6762 sadly it would never have been possible. Previous PlayStations were only backwards compatible because they had the old physical hardware inside them. PS3 had a physical PS1 inside it, which is why you can put in almost any PS1 disc and it will work without emulation. This has totally changed with PS4 and PS5, since the hardware and machine languages are completely different. All they can do is software emulation. There is a PS2 emulator bundled in the new consoles, but it’s far from perfect and you need to jailbreak the console to get it to play games that you didn’t buy off PS Store
After having played and owned almost every new console for the last 40 years, all I have and play now is a PS2. All I want it now is an easy pop in and play experience as it used to be and multiplayer is the guy next to me on the couch as it should be. Quick, easy and fun is what it’s all about.
Switch is pretty much plug and play. And I agree if I buy a new game I don't want to wait to install it and large day one patches just to play the single player
@@SilkyLew sure it wasn't "as" mainstream. but let's not act like it wasn't mainstream. The PS2 sold 500k on release day. And people were definitely playing online. I still remember playing Call of Duty and Resident Evil Outbreak online with no problems. This guy was just making statements and doesn't really know what he's talking about. There are still plenty of games that are couch co-op on current and last gen systems. And MANY games will let you put the disc in and play without installing. I have a huge PS4 library and majority of my games will be ready to play a few seconds after popping the disc in.
Class of 01 myself, although I didn't end up finishing school. I remember when the PS2 first released and how hard it was to be able to get hold of one. I got my first PS2 in 2002. I had GTA III, Gran Turismo 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2 to start with. What a time to be alive. The PS2 was and still is to this day the best console ever made and released.
My Dad gave me his PS2 and I still have it :) He bought it second hand from a video store in January 2000 for $100 plus a Memory Card. (We also have the manual in its original bag). The storekeeper told him that the man who sold it to him said that his son wanted an XBOX for Christmas but the father knew nothing about video consoles so, he bought the XBOX for his son and traded the PS2 for XBOX games. After playing several games over the years, my PS2 wasn't loading up properly and some games even skipped. My Dad showed me how to take it apart, (we did it together) and I cleaned the laser eye and rubbed a bit of silicon paste where there is a platform made of an iron rod wrapped with a coil wire that moves the platform as the machine plays the disc. We carefully put the unit back together and ... it plays as if it just left the factory :) It's quiet. No noise except for the fan. My Dad and I visit some of the Thrift and second hand stores and video stores for PS2 games and we found quite a few good ones. I bought "Resident Evil 4" for $20, "Silent Hill 2" (no manual) for $10! (Both my ultimate faves). We managed to complete the series of "Lara Croft," "Splinter Cell," "SOCOM US Navy Seals," "Hitman," and "Syphon Filter," plus two or three other games that ran in a short series :) I don't want to play DVDs or CDs on my PS2. It's for games only. I have 72 games so far. Oh yes, had to buy a new controller. The "X" button on the old one didn't press down. New controller - $8.99. With all these great games still around and a "new" PS2 console, who would want anything else? Good video review by the way :)
I was fortunate to have all the consoles, but some of my friends only had 1 and almost always it was the PS2. Definitely felt like it was the most popular, plus we were huge Tekken Tag fans back then 😄
When I got the ps2 mini I was on the fence and shop owner said it's the last one He has so I'd better buy it before it's gone. I bought it and a cupple hours later when in to the shop to see another one for sale. His "this is the last one" thing was a lie lol.
I never had a console, just a PC. Two years ago a friend of mine gifted me a PS2. Now that I only have an old MacBook I connected it and realized it has all the games I loved on PC like NFS Most Wanted. Also it has Gran Turismo, which I wanted to play a lot, but couldn't since I didn't have a console. Love that thing. Also makes me sad cause when I realize how old all those games are.
dont be sad about, rather rock that ps2 and have an amazing time with it! Many people do these days. Im lucky that i could afford myself a really decent gaming pc that can play pretty much everything at 4k resolution. But i still find myself very often playing some Tony Hawk Underground 2 on the good old ps2 and have way more fun than with any new pc game.
This is without a shadow of doubt my favorite console of all time. A place and time when no matter what studio or what genre a game belonged to, it always had a place on the shelf. The social mobility is just gone.
My dad got me a ps2 and a 20 inch TV. I was so damn hyped cuz I got my own TV. Yes it's microscopic to today's standards but obtaining your own TV without using the one in the living room or battling your siblings who gets to use one is amazing. My first 2 games were scorpion king and the almighty dark alliance (this game is freaking amazing!) I remember not having a memory card so I and some of my friends would just keep replaying the same missions over and over since we can't play for long because of curfew. Buying a memory card was EXPENSIVE. $24.99 was no joke. It took me almost 1 month to get a memory card after getting a PS2. Man those were the days!
If i could have one system on a deserted island with its entire game library, it would probobly be the PS2. SO many gems on the PS2. And better versions of multi system games like Underground 2.
ps2 has some GEMS that ppl dont talk about. Mortal Kombat Shaolin monks. - a MK beat em up. Simpsons Hit and Run - a gta like simpsons! The best Tony hawk games.
Nothing over the good old ps2 i have the ps5 and elden ring was fun but most of the games are cashgrab AAA bullshit with a lot of patches, dlc and battle passes. It feels like a big mobile phone Game console….

I remember hooking up the fiber optic cables to a Sony Receiver & watching a movie for the first time in Dolby Surround mode. I was literally thinking a chopper was flying above our house. It was shocking what was packed into the ps2. I’m glad I just picked one up.
I'll always remember fondly, being able to just pop a game disc in and instantly be able to play the game, not wait 3 hours for copying of game file plus any updates
PS2 made my teens such an amazing place. don’t get me wrong I grew up in a time when this was so new that playing outside and climbing trees was actually very fun. I’d grown up without gaming as it was a new technology. Obviously at the time it just seemed the next best thing. Now though..... I have to admit. PS2 rules. 10/10 games! 10/10 appearance and 11/10 nostalgia ✌🏼
Me when I was a kid: Wake up eat cereal, Play game for 3 hours, go outside for 2 hours, eat lunch, play game for 5 hours, eat dinner, play games till its time for bed. I use to love the summer.
Glad to see somebody else still plays this! 🤣 Some games I've got are NBA 2k6, star wars battlefront 2, call of duty 2, call of duty 3, Tekken 4, call of duty WaW, star wars the force unleashed, and Socom.
Its been weeks since I’ve been playing the ps2 and I’m loving every minute of it. I am very very confident that’ll be very busy with it for a long time because there’s just too many games I’ve missed back in the day and really wanna get my hands on them. But unlike the ps3 and 4, I’m not stacking piles of games, instead I feel happier just having a few like I have 5 ps2 games but only playing 2 because the 3 others I only bought in a rush as they are the ps2’s best sellers which is my modern gamer habit meaning I’m addicted to stacking mountains of best selling games especially for the ps4 but not with the ps2. Because just like the good old times I remember being delighted in finishing and replaying the same few games and the rest were demos and top of that no youtube video watching for me about video games because thats where I get lost. My video game spirit hasn’t lit 🔥 up this bright in a long time 😊. I call this my ps2 era baby 😎😉👍
I just started homebrewing my PS2 slim and found some really good games from my childhood. GTA SA, Need for speed, the Sly Trilogy, Crash games, NHL 07, WWE here comes the pain, Cabela's hunting and fishing games, some Spyro games, ATV offroad 3 and Burnout Takedown 3. Free MCBoot truly saved my ps2 because it could not read discs that well.
Having a PS2 now is an excellent idea. Still the best console that was ever produced for it's time. And the numbers show. No console has sold more units at launch, and no console has ever had such an impressive game library. But you dont even scratch the surface as to why you actually need one or what its capable of. You need a PS2 because it can can do so much more then what it was capable of 15 years ago. Not only is it the best console ever made by history with the largest game library. But you can now easily "Soft Mod" these consoles with little to no effort at all. Expanding its use 10s of times. You are able to purchase memory cards commercially that instantly turn your console into an expanded version of its self. Once you've obtained one of these memory cards, which by the way are dirt cheap, not even 10 dollars. Your PS2 becomes capable of loading from HDD. You can have a massive library ready to play at a moments notice. Without having to risk damaging your discs or more importantly your laser for reading discs. Then you can have the ability to synthesize higher resolutions for your games. Like I can force any game to become native widescreen aswell as being displayed in 1080p which is far above the output the console displays, but it works fine when you have a HDMI cable connected to the console. Then we have the ability to simply burn games directly from an original PS2 disc and write it straight to the HDD you've added to your console. But that's still not all we can do. What about emulation?? We can do that too. How about having the ability to emulate any console up to PS2 on your PS2. Can be done aswell. My PS2 has a massive library of games for Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, PS1 and N64. They all run flawlessly on the console, love playing some zelda on my PS2. This is still not even half the features available at your fingertips when you have a "Soft Modded" PS2. Theres still so much you can do, but I've already written a wall. If you have interest in what I'm describing. Your first step is to acquire a "Free Mcboot" ps2 memory card.
I literally still have the OG PS2. Not the dumb skinny one , or the 2.0 one , the big box one , got it the first Christmas it was released and still have it , with all the games. So tell me how to do this shit you talking bout lol
I'm so glad I read in comments to fond someone also asking "why he didn't tell us why we NeED one click bate" Thank you for the info. Now my idea of needing a WII is no longer needed. Also my kids rooms have one ps2 and other has ps3. Can you also do this to ps3?? :)
The good ol days when your mom said it’s time to sleep and you know that means playing the same campaign on big red one for three hours then going to sleep right before everyone wakes up
one of my favorite games of all time is spider man 2 for the ps2. The swinging mechanics were just incredible and so satisfying. They didn't hold your hand and prevent you from crashing into buildings like the new spiderman games do. I spent hours and hours just doing the races trying to beat the "hard" times on all of them. I never managed to beat all of them before i eventually got rid of my ps2... i really wish i had kept it. We all thought games and gaming were just going to keep getting better and better as time went on. The games look prettier but overall gaming experience is getting worse. Loot-boxes, greedy companies pushing out half-assed work, etc. Unfortunately my PC is not that great so I can barely run ps2 emulators above like 20 fps
My step dad threw my psx up the wall and smashed it when I was 8 years old, the same day he went out and brought a ps2 out of guilt. Never felt so happy and sad at the same time. The reason? Mom said no to his sleepover plans. Gt3 and command and conquer were the first games I ever played on it, followed by ffx. To this day it remains on my TV stand with a see through cutout to watch the disk spin and network adapter with 500gb ide hdd... and it still works, and to my knowledge it was release day console and I'm very impressed that the laser hasn't given up yet. It's been over 20 years.
I didn’t look up this video but last night I was talking to my cousin about how convenient the PS2 was as my first DVD player for quite a while before I finally purchased a stand-alone DVD player which were pricey at the time. I watched Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, Clerks the animated series, Powerpuff Girls, The Party and a bunch of other stuff on my PS2.
I prefered the PS2 as a DVD player rather than buying a new DVD device ! The fun thing back then was watching your favorite movies AND playing your games, ya m3awad ahsan Jihaz wa Ahla ayam. :D
I love this system so much, that I'm on my 4th PS2 right now!! The DVD/ CD player, the backwards compatibility, (which Sony should've stuck with on the PS4, but hey, money talks.) and the library of games, and you got yourself a masterpiece of a system. One of the greatest systems ever, and I hope to show my kids someday, if I ever have any, how in depth games were back in my day.
7:06 The dual shock2 did add much. The face buttons were pressure sensitive. For example, some racing games required you to push harder to accelerate faster.
@@salvatorevetro1743 It really only affects the chokehold and aiming with assault rifles. I got used to playing it on ps4 through psnow without pressure sensitive buttons.
Damn I didn’t grow up in the PS2 era but I love the games. I really want to have a PS2 that I can play. Yes I have the emulator but there is a different feeling when you play the original thing.
If you are in the UK how much would you be willing to pay for a brand new boxed ps2 with a bunch of games two controllers a memory card and the scart lead thing all brand new unused. Was bought in 2013 and left in a cupboard since?
Something I never thought of until now is how amazing it is that the PS2 kicked so much ass that even amongst the Gamecube and Xbox, which were both very successful releases, it came out not only on top, but ridiculously so. Just crazy to think that the PS2s numbers were this high even with their competition seeing great success. The PS2s success was just that much higher.
Which is why I’ve always been a PlayStation person Anyone who was actually around and playing during that time understands All the others are Xbox players lol
@@ACarter87 I mean, I am an xbox person. I never owned a Sony console after the PS2. Honestly what happened is that I grew out of the console wars mindset. It helps that these days every console is basically the same but with a different look and minor differences. Aside from exclusives of course, which only exist to create an actual pull away from their competitors. At this point I just love games. If money wasn't an issue, I'd own every single console.
The best system there ever was. Even better than next gen systems. It may not be graphically dominate; or technologically superior for current times, but it had the best game library of any system I've ever seen. PS5: Probably only about 4 games I'd play. PS2: I Had well over 100 great titles in my library and was still counting.
I doubt it. Nintendo, Super NES, the Dreamcast, and the PS3/Xbox 360 we're the best consoles ever made. The Xbox 360/PS3 brought us God of War, Dragon Age, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Bio Shock, Gears of War, Halo, Kingdom Hearts, the Orange Box, Dead Space, Lost Odyssey, Uncharted, COD(I'm not a fan though), Shadow complex, Beyond good and evil, etc... the PS2 did have a lot of great games that weren't commercial, I'll give them that.
@@astralmindny9055 The PS3 was good too; it also had some great titles that you mentioned, "The Last of Us" was another one I'd add on that list. It's too bad the backwards compatible ones just wore out and stopped working after a time.
@XRP Ripple yeah ur right. I can't lie, I'm an xbot to the death, but the PS2 was FIRE! believe it or not, the first game I've played was " Project Eden," and after that I think it was one of the Olympic games. When they dropped Resident Evil 4( the game that laid the groundwork for Gears of War) and kingdom hearts, it was over! The only thing I hated about the PS2 was the fact that I had a bunch of friends, so everytime we played a game you had to pass the controller when you died .
@XRP Ripple that's been a huge complaint about the game. It's sort of like dead Space with the stasis until I exploited an unlimited stasis glitch, well.... until I learned of it!
Crazy too how I was just thinking about how out of all the systems I got the most love for the PS2. That thing was revolutionary and had equally monumental games released on it. A truly special time in gaming and I do miss it.
@@ronald4life1 eeehhhhhh not when it comes to the gaming library and popularity. PS2 was the console to have in the early 2000 and not even the all mighty halo couldn't compete and that was Microsofts biggest selling point
PS2 was and is still my favorite console all of time, including its phenomenal theme. Breathing on the GTA: San Andreas disc your friend lent you and wiping off the marks, praying that it won't lead to the infamous RSoD. Blaring piano sounds as you open it, giving off mysterious and eerie feeling as you wait patiently... *NYOOM* -there it is, a sudden gush of serotonin, you are happy, it's a good day. It feels good in the summer of '06...
PS2 is a legendary machine. I remember playing final fantasy X for the first time and the graphics looked unbelievable. My ps1 also broke so when I got my PS2 I was able to play my games again.
I remember when I rebought a PS2 and was so happy that I didn't have to wait several hours for the games to copy and update when I installed them. That happiness was then swiftly taken away when I put hours into GTA III and forgot all about memory cards.
Cool video, but one point to add wrt DualShock 2 controllers; they were different to the PS1s DS1s in that the X, circle, square and triangle buttons have pressure sensitivity. This is best exampled in MGS2 where you can hold down square to pull the trigger, but if you release the button gently, you don't fire. Same for throwing distance also.
Reason #1: PCSX2 still shows inaccuracy in terms of rendering in some games and demanding titles runs like dogshit if you don't have a beefy CPU with powerful single threading. Don't get me wrong, some other games do look accurate and runs fine but damn, PCSX2 needs another decade to have proper performance and accuracy. Ofc if you're a console player, you don't need a PC to get crispy graphics, just get a component wire and you'll have the best visual experience.
You are talking shit. You can emulate ps2 with 50 dollars processor athlon 3000g the cheapest on market you get 720p resolution and 60 FPS wich is MORE than the ps2 could do. We are in it just because we like the console but it's long overdue its status as a "difficult to emulate system"
@@MarcosGarcia-kx4rb how much experience do you have with games on pcsx2? There are many games that run worst on it than on og hardware, even with my i7 3770k, sure it's from 2013, but still a very capable cpu that runs modern games no problem at 60+. The ace combat games run awfully, so does Zone of the Enders 2nd runner and plenty of others. Also the Ps2 has dozens, yes dozens of quality games that run at 60fps on og hardware including the aforementioned. So it may be you who doesn't know what they're talking about mate.
@@retrosoul8770 they run perfectly maybe you are having issues with configuration or maybe it's a hardward compatibility My athlon ran most of the heavy titles with no troubles. I still play on my ps2 just for the comfortability of my playing on my bed
Despite people playing down the DVD component of the PS2, the DVD component of the PS2 actually ended up becoming crucial to games development a couple of years into the PS2's cycle. See, back when they first started making games for the PS2, they were using the PS2 component of the reader/hardware to program games for. But a lot of developers found it extremely difficult and fiddly to code games for it. Then they tweaked onto the fact that they could use the DVD part to play games, so they started coding it for the DVD reader/hardware. That's why, when the PS2 first came out, the games discs had a dark blue read surface, but after a couple of years, the games discs read surface were silver (because those later games were coded to use the DVD component of the PS2).
Playing the first resident evil in 1 run without saving because nobody had a goddamn memory card for their ps2 back than was a real thing. Or always playing gta san andreas, but no matter where you at, it never started with a safefile, you always saw CJ picking up his package at the airport lmao!
I love my PS2. I bought it back in I think it was either the spring or summer of 2012. £3.50 from a fella in a car-boot sale. and managed to find a controller for it for another £1. My uncle provided me with the cables and a memory card since he never threw them away, dug out a composite-capable television and I'd play on it for hours on end every Saturday. When the summer rolled around each year, I'd go car-boot spelunking with my nan and my sister each week. and over the course of about 4 years of doing this I accumulated some 50 games all for around £1-3 each. Good stuff too. I got a copy of Half-Life, the console exclusive Call of Duty titles, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, NFS Underground 1 and 2 along with MW and Carbon, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Heroes, Simpsons Hit & Run, all sorts. I'm glad that Cex still carries PS2 games just for the fact that everyone and their mother in the UK had one of these things when they were new.
My story isn't as awesome as Jazeen's, it's actually a little stupid. but PS2 was the first console I owned. My friends had a ps1 and played pc games, I've been playing pc games since I was a year or two old lol. But *my* first console? My aunt got me a ps2 shortly after it came out here in America. It was either in 2001 or 2002 so I was 3 or 4. And it was the bundle from Costco that came with a controller, memory card, one of the ATV games and Ratchet and Clank 1. R&C is still to this day my favorite ps2 game. I played that ps2 for several hours every day. Which apparently was too much to my parents, cause they only wanted me to play it for ONE hour every day. So after about a month of having it my parents returned it to the store. I was so pissed at them I took the Ratchet and clank cd and hid it under my bed as they packed the ps2 in the car so that way when they returned it they wouldn't take it back. And that's what happened, they refused to take it back because it was missing one of the discs. It was like a 40 minute drive so they were super pissed and insisted that I'm never getting one again. In 2006 when we first moved my parents decided to go back and get me a ps2 again. Again also a brand new bundle from Costco, this one including another atv game and Jak 3, also a game I still love very much. But the same thing happened. I was making Bs and As instead of straight As so my parents returned it to the store yet again. YEEHAW come 2017 I got one with my own money and still have it and play it regularly. My Aunt got me a black label Ratchet and Clank last Christmas and we spent that whole day playing it together like we used to.
Amazing to see somebody with seemingly a passion to keep such a legendary console alive. Really enforces a point: Who cares about how old something is? If it works, enjoy it.
The network adapter still has quite some use(besides homebrew content). There are still quite some PS2 Game Fan Servers. There are some Discord Servers with a few hundred Members that are used to organize multiplayer sessions. For example I remember playing COD 3 Multiplayer on PS2 with about 20 Guys last year. I'm sure that popular games like Battlefront 2 still have some fan servers with a certain amount of players. TDLR: Try some PS2 Fan Servers if you still have a Network Adapter for the PS2 Fat Version.
I remember getting the PS2. I was very excited. I believe the DVD player feature helped a great deal with my parents decision. I think we went half and half on the purchase. I remember when it was very new, people would see a Madden game being played and be like, "...Is that real or a video game?" haha
The fact that you could mod the og PS2 to have a built in ssd and just put thousand of games inside without having the need to buy the games, it was incredible
Fun fuct: the PS2 bus is not even fast enough to take really advantage of SSD disk speed. It's capped at fairly low speed..you are better off with a mechanical drive with much more space and maybe an IDE-SATA converter.
the best console ever with a pyrite chip installed, still, today works like new, with a huge amount of free games. 90' was amazing and the free world starts crumbling in 2001
@@paxhumana2015 explain why? For me was the best consol ever made. The graphics was amazing, you could play free games, price was acceptable, graphics was on another level, no more big squares, smooth edges on squares, pyrate chip and you could play free games, even non rich kids could play with a lot of games, so, for me, was the best consol ever made and please don't write your non logical thoughts, only kids can write comments like yours, Have a nice day
@@paxhumana2015 what is wrong with the pyrate chip? almost everyone had an installed chip, games are and was expensive and not everyone has money to spend on games. So pyrate chip was the best thing on first made gaming consoles. PS1 and PS2 they had great success precisely because of the chip, i am not shure, but i think that first pyrate chip was made by Sony. Back then sony dodn't make a lot of money with games, so they made a chip to push the console selling and it worked very well. now are different games that are based on on line playing and you must registered your self in 90' wasn't like it is now.
I saw a lot of these back in the day in the houses of adults. For various reasons (quality, immersion, game catalog especially), this console appealed to many adults who otherwise weren’t “gamers.” That’s how you end up moving over 100 million units, I suppose.
I remember My mom and I going to Wal-Mart to get groceries and She knew I wanted a ps2 and I asked if I could go look at electronics she took me there and I saw they had just stocked them and she told me to get one and get 2 games and another controller. I chose Onimusha and I think the 2nd one was Smackdown Just Bring It. But that was a really sweet day. I remember NFS Underground 1 and 2 changed the game on racing games. I also remember Prince of Persia and that opened the door to games like Assassin's Creed. Game changing console for sure.
The jump from PS1 to PS2 is something that has stood with me to this day. It was just massive. I know PS5 is going to be amazing but I’ll always remember being in Best Buy when PS2 first went on sale. My mind was totally blown!
@@MillerJW100 you are wrong though. The jump from ps1 to ps2 was definitely greater than ps3 to ps4. But ps4 to ps5, you are so wrong, but I don't blame you, it's hard to see at this point and you have to know a lot about hardware and game development to understand what a shift it will be. Come back to this comment at xmas 2023 and let me know how I told you so. 😁
I have a modded PS2, but I remember ditching my original PS2 because of those idiotic expensive memory cards. Dumping it for an original Xbox with a hard drive was game changing. The PS2 is a great console, and these days you can get 128MB 3rd party memory cards for next to nothing, but originally they were like 8MB and cost $60+. Awful.
Great presentation bro. It's true though... "Put a disk in and forget life's worries". Some of the greatest video game moments for me, were on the mighty PS2.
Just picked up a boxed ps2 in very good condition, 2 controllers, memory cards and 19 games for £40. Absolutely buzzing to get my old ps2 library back up and running!
In my opinion, two systems had the best game libraries: the PS2 and the SNES. Sadly, my PS2 started breaking down the year of the PS3s release. First it stopped playing blue discs then stopped playing anything. I miss it 😭
Try wiping the laser very gently with a wet wipe(if its the slim version) there's also a tutorial on how to clean the laser on the fat version. I'm not kidding btw. You laser could be dead indeed, however there's a huge chance that you should just try this and get blown away if you're as lucky as me.
PCSX2 is a great alternative for those who can't get the console anymore, and you can add in 16:9 widescreen support for all games and upscale them to 5K. Emulation is basically reliving the past but in style with modern convenience. And these emulators will always be around as long as the internet is still around while the consoles are lost to the sands of time.
Absolutely awesome video, with some pretty awesome facts. My girl and I currently still have three of them ( two wide bodies and a slim) two of them are currently hooked up. We have a stack of games, memory cards, and controllers galore for them. Definitely still a beast of a system. Makes me remember the days of playing resident evil 2 and 3 for the first time for hours on end.
I still have my PS2 that still works fine even though it got too close to a space heater and made a large bubble on the front of the exterior case. Plus I got my PS2 from winning a sweepstakes from 1 of the large video game magazine that were out and common at the time.
I found one at a flea market for $5 2 years ago. I had all of the cords already, the dude said it was broke so I decided to take a chance, especially considering it was in amazing condition. Just a little dusty. I opened it up and the thing looked like brand new. Plugged it in turned it on and I was surprised how quiet it was. Tested out an extremely scratched copy of FFX and it booted like new. Best $5 I ever spent. It's now hooked up with Component cables from HDRetroVision, an optical cable and I have 2 licensed controllers and memory cards in near new condition. I didn't realize they made basically every Guitar Hero/Rock Band game for this thing...needless to say I own almost all of them.
The PS2 was the bomb back in the day. So many awesome games. My all time fav’s include Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and James Bond Nightfire. If Rockstar remastered GTA Vice City with a new engine for Xbox one, I would buy it for sure.
5:20 Although the Emotion Engine can handle jobs like animation, and calculate stuff like node visibility, it is not entirely responsible for the rendering itself. Although the Vector Units that transform the scene into triangle lists (and other various command for the GS) are also located in the Emotion Engine chip package, the actual rendering is being done on the GS. My point is, the most important part about the EE is the MIPS core which actually runs the games logic. There is another MIPS core, which handles all "system" stuff (for example communicating with the DVD drive), which is less powerful, but is also used for the PlayStation 1 emulation. This core is completely omitted in the presentation from what I could see.
@@iamgoo he’s basically saying the PlayStation 2 was extremely efficient in everything it did for the hardware it possessed. Split workload type of thing. Not the best for the generation, but it’s structure was compartmentalized perfectly.

It ain't real 1080p just fits in 1080p frame but on some games it looks amazing may I do a video on forcing 1080p on games where it looks great on my HD CRT via Component Cable
I miss waiting outside the store for 2 months prior to release with my tent and sleeping bag in the freezing cold and driving rain, just to buy one. Ah, those were the days!! I really miss that side of things, makes you really appreciate the console when you get it not like these eBay scalpers nowadays, takes all the fun out of it. I did get pnumonia though...but is was so worth it just for the memories of queueing outside for so long!!

Hey man, just so you know the “EyeToy port” you mention there is actually called the i.LINK port (also known as an IEEE 1394 or FireWire port) and it was used for connecting multiple systems together for multiplayer. However it was removed from later revisions of the PS2 so only a handful of PS2 games support it. The EyeToy itself just used USB, so it can be used on all systems.
Silent Hill 2 is my favourite game on the PS2 and I made a video on it. Check it out

Anybody else remember having to leave the console on overnight so you wouldn't lose your progress when your memory cards were full lol.
Omg me and my brother had to do that a few years ago so he could play kingdom hearts

That built-in DVD player was absolutely BONKERS for when it released. DVD players alone were like $300+.
I got a PS2 that Christmas, and by complete happenstance.
Here's the story, and I promise it's a good one:
I actually gave my mom $200 as buffer money, to help pay for it IF she found one. (I sold my N64 and all my games, controllers, accessories, etc. to get that cash. Wish I hadn't, now that I'm a retro collector, but how else do you get big cash at 15?)
She went to over a dozen stores, and at like the 15th store (Circuit City, "Where service is state of the art") she went to the customer service desk and asked if they had any PS2s.
(RIP that kid's Christmas)
She slapped down the cash and got it.
But there's more:
So Christmas morning comes and I saw nothing that looked like a PS2 under the tree. I was disappointed, but I expected it, so it wasn't like, catastrophic. I opened a bunch of games and a memory card, etc etc. (I still wanted to have all that stuff for when I finally did get a PS2.)
After everything was opened, and no PS2 to be seen, my mom says, "I'm so sorry that I couldn't find one.
You better believe I called like 4 of my friends and told them to come over immediately hahah
It was the most memorable Christmas ever.

I don't think we'll ever experience a generational leap like we did when we jumped from PS1 to PS2. It was wild.
You can still play PS5 today without internet, patch or DLC. If you have one with disc drive ;)
And a Linux computer.
I always say that PS2 defined a whole generation.
Could not agree more! I miss the days when a game was released as is. I'm so suck of these lazy development messes that get released with hundreds of bugs and predatory f2p "content"

The DVD player functionality was absolute KILLER at that time, it really was a cheap DVD player while also being a system.
It also played EVERYTHING. There were discs that didn't work on other DVD players

I switched from VHS to DVD immediately, and within a few short months, my DVD collection exploded.... same thing with PS4 and blu-rays. Its so weird how i can replay any game from the ps2 era over and over again, and never get tired of it, they are so FUN, creative and unique.

I was thinking about that music 3000 today, I go around the charity shops looking for it. I never find it.

The absolute best part of a ps2, no constant GB game updates that takes hours to download (depending on network speeds), just to keep playing.

My Dad gave me his PS2 and I still have it :)
He bought it second hand from a video store in January 2000 for $100 plus a Memory Card.
We managed to complete the series of "Lara Croft," "Splinter Cell," "SOCOM US Navy Seals," "Hitman," and "Syphon Filter," plus two or three other games that ran in a short series :)
I don't want to play DVDs or CDs on my PS2. It's for games only. I have 72 games so far.
Oh yes, had to buy a new controller. The "X" button on the old one didn't press down. New controller - $8.99.
With all these great games still around and a "new" PS2 console, who would want anything else?
Good video review by the way :)

Hey bro I have a pal ps2 can you point me in right direction to mod it like you described?

one of my favorite games of all time is spider man 2 for the ps2. The swinging mechanics were just incredible and so satisfying. I never managed to beat all of them before i eventually got rid of my ps2... i really wish i had kept it. We all thought games and gaming were just going to keep getting better and better as time went on. The games look prettier but overall gaming experience is getting worse. This whole time, I thought pressing harder made me think I was going faster. This blows my mind.
Yeah but when you push too hard they need calibrating after time, so you find yourself naturally pushing harder just to get full speed xD

Which is why I’ve always been a PlayStation person
Anyone who was actually around and playing during that time understands
All the others are Xbox players lol
The Xbox 360/PS3 brought us God of War, Dragon Age, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Bio Shock, Gears of War, Halo, Kingdom Hearts, the Orange Box,
Dead Space, Lost Odyssey, Uncharted, COD(I'm not a fan though), Shadow complex, Beyond good and evil, etc... the PS2 did have a lot of great games that weren't commercial, I'll give them that.
@XRP Ripple Yes, halo and Ninja Gaiden. What ever happened to " Beyond good and Evil 2," are they going to make it?
@XRP Ripple that's been a huge complaint about the game. It's sort of like dead Space with the stasis until I exploited an unlimited stasis glitch, well.... until I learned of it!

PS2 is a legendary machine. I remember playing final fantasy X for the first time and the graphics looked unbelievable. My ps1 also broke so when I got my PS2 I was able to play my games again.
Final Fantasy X's graphics were completely mindblowing at the time. Good memories.
When I worked on PS2 @ Sony I had to listen to that startup chime 2000 times every day.
Alongside a quality crt with component (or at least s-video) yes. For best visuals, input response, and motion quality.
You are talking shit. You can emulate ps2 with 50 dollars processor athlon 3000g the cheapest on market you get 720p resolution and 60 FPS wich is MORE than the ps2 could do.

No it was already using dvd for some games on its release, games where getting bigger so dvd was the next step for games, sony new what they where doing

YEEHAW
come 2017 I got one with my own money and still have it and play it regularly. My Aunt got me a black label Ratchet and Clank last Christmas and we spent that whole day playing it together like we used to.
Another awesome and wholesome story. Don't sell your story short bro. Thanks for sharing and bless your aunty bro she sounds awesome 👏🏼❤️
Amazing to see somebody with seemingly a passion to keep such a legendary console alive. Really enforces a point: Who cares about how old something is? If it works, enjoy it.
Yes indeed
The network adapter still has quite some use(besides homebrew content). There are still quite some PS2 Game Fan Servers. There are some Discord Servers with a few hundred Members that are used to organize multiplayer sessions. For example I remember playing COD 3 Multiplayer on PS2 with about 20 Guys last year. I'm sure that popular games like Battlefront 2 still have some fan servers with a certain amount of players.
