Baez is a fine and much underated guitar player. Everyone always mentions her voice, which is unique, but listen to her playing guitar and you will find another dimension to her.
Agree. I had taken some guitar lessons but lacked a musical style when Joan Baez came along in the early 60s. I adopted folk music based on hearing how wonderful it sounded in her hands. And yes, I learned fingerpicking (a pretty big feat for beginners) just by listening to her (the song was "Fennario"). So she changed my life for the better as I'm sure she did many others. I teach guitar now sometimes, having learned much about it. Joan sounds great on guitar. I especially like the way she makes it seem easy and routine (it's not; you have to work at it and pay attention to every note and hand movement). Joan came into the guitar shop in Palo Alto (the upscale town where she started playing early in her career) when I was there,.maybe15 years ago. Everyone acted cool and nonchalant -- except me. She is a living legend! The combination of her angelic voice, strong guitar playing -- and natural beauty in the 60s was just...stunning. Something I will never forget -- and don't want to.
@@hangdogit Yes I agree. I went into Guitar Center and tried to ask if anyone knew finger-picking a la Joan Baez and no one had heard of her. Sometimes artists themselves are the best teachers. She's an inspiration.
My family listened to Ms Baez and watched her on the news for the phylanthropy and volunteer work she has been doing since she was a child. Such a deep rich voice still today. She plays her insturments so beautifuly. Thankyou to Ms Baez for all her work including her music. We are so very lucky to have her in our presence.
Joan Baez has the most amazing voice. She was the first person I ever heard sing traditional folk songs and I just loved them. I like her other music too. I've been listening to her since the early 1970's (maybe late 60's) and her music still is still moving and beautiful. Actually I can remember waiting for a new Joan Baez album to come out! That would be a record for you young people (joking - lol).
Saw Joan on her Fare Thee Well tour in Austin and realized what a dead solid influence she had on my guitar playing when I saw her there in college in 1964. I even bought a Martin guitar like hers back then, lucky for me - now worth 11X what I paid for it. The voice of a generation. Hammer on, Joan!
Last week I saw Joan on her Fare Thee Well Tour. OMG, she's still got it! Last time I saw her live was same year as this video! Such a big influence on my love of folk music, guitar playing (she's better than ever now), hair style back then. Thank you, Joan, for a lifetime of inspiration. BTW, last week I also saw the Mozart opera Don Giovanni, and this song describes him perfectly - "a handsome devil" with "a chain five miles long, and on every link a heart does dangle of another maid he's loved and wronged."
For a short while, Lovers Thomas Merton and Margie Smith listened to this song the same time each day, to remember the depth and passion of an illicit love... ah, what love can do with music!
It's doubly tragic. The mother was hurt by her faithless lover, which is bad enough, but the real tragedy is that her daughter will suffer the even worse fate of never experiencing love at all. It's about how suffering is passed on from one generation to the next, and keeps gathering speed along the way.
Avery Williams •• I know u know but This is that scene where Lily Taylor goes 2bed in tears & plays this record after being told by that toothless hooker what the "Dogfight" was really about. Most poignant scene (w/the exception of the ending). Missin River💔
Met Joan and her mother at her caravan before she went live to the Cambridge 16th festival. She signed my book (Joan's) and I had the privalige of carrying her guitar to the stage. A very young, very impressed male that night. A truly wonderful singer.
Highly recommend the Fleet Foxes version, didn't realize how old of a song it was until I looked it up. This is incredible though. Just though I'd share a snippet on Wikipedia: "A whole book could be written on this song and its connections with other songs which involve young men at their sweethearts' windows at night, disapproving parents and silver daggers. Hugely popular with North American traditional singers, 'Drowsy Sleeper' was also collected regularly in Britain and appeared on broadsides there from at least the 1820s"
I am a guitar player and I think Jerry Garcia was a genius and wondered what he listened to and found this. I am getting a great education in awesome music I would have never heard by doing this.
+Katie Hill such a beautiful song.. i truly love that. This song makes me think of my first real love; cant help but feel that her mother had a silver dagger.
That guitar work! In total contrast to the long slow vocals, woven together with carefully honed skills. She makes this appear effortless which it certainly is not.
Does anybody know if Dylan or Joan was playing the guitar in the 1965 live recording? The harmonica is not hard to guess... but the guitar is much more aggressive in the live version - the but still very similar to this regarding the style and hammer ons etc.
Baez is a fine and much underated guitar player. Everyone always mentions her voice, which is unique, but listen to her playing guitar and you will find another dimension to her.
+Ian Patterson I agree 100%Her fingerpicking is excellent. What a pure player.

she's just travis picking. it's pretty common guitar technique for folk and country music.
@@ashikana21 That's Guitar center for you.
Lovely to hear someone sing just sing a song with one instrument, no jumping, no back up distractions. God I sound like my dad…
Spent many hours listening to Joan in a smokey room 1965
I’m watching this in 2023 and her skill at singing and guitar is unmatched this is a truly amazing performance
It's 2024 🌼

She has such a hauntingly beautiful voice . I love her .🌹💖💖🎉

A haunting song, a beautiful voice.
The best version of the greatest folk song of all times.
Bought this album in 1963...college freshman, just getting into folk. Good place to start!
She had raw talent, and got half the credit. I love you joan
These lyrics are savage 😂… Facts Joan straight facts 💯 😅
Just watched Geoge Gemtly -Eboney Beckleys' version, which bought me here to listen to Joan singing it - so incredibly beautiful,
Here after hearing the Fleet Foxes version...this is stunning!
For a short while, Lovers Thomas Merton and Margie Smith listened to this song the same time each day, to remember the depth and passion of an illicit love... ah, what love can do with music!
such a sad song, but sung with hope. I feel for the daughter, but, I can see where the mother is coming from.
Sounds like her mother put her off men.

Fleet Foxes version was the first one I heard and I loved it :)
Truly haunting
.😁
A favourite
Why does the audio on songs from this era seem clearer than on many if not most recordings of today?
Because modern recordings have excessive compression applied to them.
I am a guitar player and I think Jerry Garcia was a genius and wondered what he listened to and found this. I am getting a great education in awesome music I would have never heard by doing this.
Amen!
