Joan Baez - Silver Dagger (live 1965)
this video is part of a concert you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/iNy-itf_q8w/v-deo.html
Don't sing love songs, you'll wake my mother
She's sleeping here right by my side
And in her right hand a silver dagger,
She says that I can't be your bride.
All men are false, says my mother,
They'll tell you wicked, lovin' lies.
The very next evening, they'll court another,
Leave you alone to pine and sigh.
My daddy is a handsome devil
He's got a chain five miles long,
And on every link a heart does dangle
Of another maid he's loved and wronged.
Go court another tender maiden,
And hope that she will be your wife,
For I've been warned, and I've decided
To sleep alone all of my life.

I am a guitar player and I think Jerry Garcia was a genius and wondered what he listened to and found this. I am getting a great education in awesome music I would have never heard by doing this.

My family listened to Ms Baez and watched her on the news for the phylanthropy and volunteer work she has been doing since she was a child. Such a deep rich voice still today. She plays her insturments so beautifuly. Thankyou to Ms Baez for all her work including her music. We are so very lucky to have her in our presence.

That guitar work! In total contrast to the long slow vocals, woven together with carefully honed skills. She makes this appear effortless which it certainly is not.

Saw Joan on her Fare Thee Well tour in Austin and realized what a dead solid influence she had on my guitar playing when I saw her there in college in 1964. I even bought a Martin guitar like hers back then, lucky for me - now worth 11X what I paid for it. The voice of a generation. Hammer on, Joan!

Met Joan and her mother at her caravan before she went live to the Cambridge 16th festival. She signed my book (Joan's) and I had the privalige of carrying her guitar to the stage. A very young, very impressed male that night. A truly wonderful singer.

Does anybody know if Dylan or Joan was playing the guitar in the 1965 live recording? The harmonica is not hard to guess... but the guitar is much more aggressive in the live version - the but still very similar to this regarding the style and hammer ons etc.

Highly recommend the Fleet Foxes version, didn't realize how old of a song it was until I looked it up. This is incredible though. Just though I'd share a snippet on Wikipedia: "A whole book could be written on this song and its connections with other songs which involve young men at their sweethearts' windows at night, disapproving parents and silver daggers. Hugely popular with North American traditional singers, 'Drowsy Sleeper' was also collected regularly in Britain and appeared on broadsides there from at least the 1820s"
