So I noticed some of your Shorts are playing vertical and others have got the black bars on the sides.
I'm guessing the back bar ones are not playing on YT Shorts platform to go viral?
Were those videos edited 1920x1080 and that's why they have the black bars, whereas the other videos you uploaded in vertical format, maybe from your phone or editing software?

What Tictok does with royalties on music is something YT should have done long ago. It would give more freedom to creators while giving record labels the financial protection they want. Honesty surprised they haven't done this yet.
The music in the shorts camera is supposed to have good music. We’ll see.

Good info on shorts. I was disappointed to learn that that they appear alongside the rest of a channel's videos. I had hoped they would appear in a separate section, like how the community tab is in its own place. I post 10-20 minute videos and a bunch of 15-60 second shorts alongside them would ruin the continuity of my page. I considered a second channel with "short" versions of my videos, but that could trigger a "duplicate content" issue as well. With that in mind, it doesn't look like I'll be able to participate based on the current structure.
That’s why I didn’t make shorts on my main channel as well. If you re-edit them, you should be ok with duplicate content. You just don’t want to post the exact content. That’s how “clips” channels are getting away with it.
Thanks for great video...very helpful...I have a question in same discussion...so I understand that whenever I will create short then it will appear in my main channel window...is that correct? Also where can I see my exact short appearance after upload? Is there any way
That’s a good work around. UA-cam is going to separate Shorts from our other videos with its own tab. They are working on it now.

Thanks Dee this is the most concise video I've seen on this topic. I've struggled with whether I should use shorts on our channel, but it sounds like it's a good idea. I'm just worried our typical viewers won't like the format. I guess it's worth an experiment to see!
When I convert my video into portrait mode and upload I don't get the white bars on the sides of the video that I see on other people's shorts... I see the black bars. Should I just use my phone to record the video in portrait mode instead of trying to convert a normal video to fit the portrait mode? does the video need to be 1080 px by 1920 px ... or is it possible to do it with 404 x 720?
To get the translucent sides you need to overlay the image. Black bars are from filming in portrait mode and not editing it to have the translucent sides. Hope that helps

You said this really well, Dee. I've had a lot of success with shorts in the last few months. I've built it into my workflow and am trying to be consistent and relevant to my main content.
I really hope they decouple them from main videos in the future (like how Live is separate), just to make it a little easier to manage.

First device I owned (2014) sat around and did nothing until 2016, that's when my nieces husband stopped by for 10 minutes and showed me a few important basics. For channels our size, it is ok to do them on our main channels. I’d only recommend not doing that if you had a huge channel.

Yes. What Dee said is true. I had a couple under 60 second videos before shorts came out. When shorts came out, these videos automatically were put on the shorts shelf....without the hashtag shorts (bc obviously before shorts came out, i didn't know to put that) also it just so happens that they were done in vertical format when i filmed them.

I don't think my answer will help anyone bc I started my channel as a test. I had been watching content creation videos for 5 months and one day as I was talking to my friend about YT, I wanted to show her what I was talking about and also I couldn't really explain without making my first video.
At the time we were watching the Bachelorette. So it was a 40 sec video for fun. A joke. A test. The next couple videos were odd bc the Bachelorette wasn't on until the next week (and I didn't have a niche yet. Still don't) Plus just using my phones data to upload took all my data and took 1-7 days to upload depending on how long the videos were. So i kept them short.
Fast forward to now (2 months later) and to answer your question.... those videos got out fairly quickly in the algorithm, im guessing bc it was a hot topic (at the moment) and i think i applied what I learned about titles fairly good. A couple of them over 100 views fairly quickly, i think. I then learned about thumbnails and started making thumbnails for them and got more views.
The problem is my videos are not evergreen exactly. The Bachelorette is over. People are not interested in those now. There might be some people in the future who might come across them and go down memory lane but thats about it for those videos.
And being consistent. Because of my internet I am not able to put out any kind of videos on a regular basis. So i am losing my momentum.

What size should the thumbnail be for shorts - like for a normal video or 9:16/ vertical?
Great job Dee. Answered a ton of my questions. I am doing an experiment of a short every-other day for 30 days and see what growth I get. It is gaming content and mostly livestream highlights or funny stuff that happened in livestreams or recording. Great job on the vid!

I have uploaded two shorts so far. Both ended up on the shorts shelf after a few days and only stayed there for about 8 hours each. They were receiving up to 100 views per hour which is a lot for my channel. Both brought in a few new subs as well. Thanks for explaining how this works because I was scratching my head.

Great info. I am trying to start using them as a trailer for the full videos. I have a question about the video requirements to qualify as a short. If I have a landscape video the I will resize to 1:1 or crop it, would it be considered short? assuming it is less than 60 seconds.

If you’re uploading a thumb, make it horizontal. If it goes into the Shorts shelf, UA-cam will remove that for the Shelf and take a vertical screen grab to use as a thumb.
