    Mr. White … let me first say thank you so much for all your videos, which are so very helpful in understanding the Lightroom ecosystem. That said (forgive my ignorance), I’m not sure I understand what the benefit of this feature is for those who use LIghtroom Classic and also Lightroom (cloud)? If I’m on my main desktop computer, wouldn’t I just edit a photo in my LrC Catalog and then - if I wanted access to it in Lightroom - add it to a Collection that is synced to Lightroom (cloud)? Thanks again!

  • @csc-photo

    Wait so can we create a local un-sync’d library, import locally, etc? OR is this just essentially a local file browser feature?
    I’m guessing - it’s file browsing, and anything in the library (imported or “copied”) will be sync’d.

    I would like to make the move from LRC to LR with this new Local update. I do have a question, which I have looked on the galactic interwebs and haven't found so I assume it is a no. Is there a way to customize the edit "panel" in LR like there is in LRC? I have moved the panels I never use to the bottom and created a "top-down" type workflow in LRC by rearranging things. It would be nice to have that same feature in LR.

    • @jordanking7711
      @jordanking7711 7 місяців тому

      No, there isn't. Also with LR you can't put the panels in 'solo' mode, which only opens up one panel at a time, like you can with LRC. Who knows though, they might add it in the future in an update. But I would doubt it.

      LR (cloud) you can't make collections, and LRC you can, considering it's more DAM based, not to mention that LR (cloud) doesn't have the modules that LRC does. Don't get me wrong, the new LR can KIND OF do that, but not to the same degree as LRC.

      Lightroom and Camera Raw dont change your original images. The edits are layered on top the files and in Adobe's proprietary format. so visual only to Adobe software (eg Bridge, photoshop). Those edit layers are stored in Lightrooms catalogue (LRC) and along the raw files (xmp) or within the meta data for dng files LR and mobile. Finder does not display those edits, you willl have to export the edits as new files from LR to have them visible to other software.

      Haven't played with it yet, but there is a 'share to' Blurb connection, which might be similar to how you use Publish. I've never used it in LrC. Collections in LrC = Albums. Collection Sets = Folders. There is no way to that I am aware to do quick or smart collections. BTW, the albums and folders functions are only available for photos in the cloud, not locally.

    • @JBRose
      @JBRose 7 місяців тому

      Biggest difference is no catalog, 1:1 or smart previews files needed. It's basically a browser interface with Lightroom editing tools for local files, while keeping the cloud functionality. Also, the files on cloud in the new Lightroom release end up being full size image copies (if residing in both places) or just full size in the cloud (if only there) and not smart previews.

    What's the likelihood that Adobe will start to phase out lightroom Classic now that they've given LIghtroom the ability to edit and store images locally? Sounds to me like this is one of several steps to try to do away with Classic within the next 3-5 years... And to be honest, that would be "OK" as long as LR is bought up to the same level as LR Classic and perhaps even inherit some of the UI from it. My guess though is that in the "near" future (5 years) LR classic will go away, there will only be ONE Lightroom program, but you will have to choice to use it locally (with local storage) or cloud-based where your edits and photos are stored in the cloud, and it only keeps a local cache on your machine. This functionality sort of exists today in both programs, but my guess is that Adobe is going to start merging the two and hopefully will have a more powerful Lightroom program in the future, that also offers very good plug-in support as well for desktop and mobile users (something that LR Classic does quite well, but Lightroom "Desktop"/cloud still lacks a bit).

    Wow... you can edit photos on your own harddrive. This is earth shattering technology. NEVER DONE BEFORE. Totally amazing. Adobe is so far ahead of the game. Who would have ever thought we could edit photos on our own harddrive. I never knew this technology existed. Adobe... your AMAZING.
    NOT!
    I NEVER used lightroom or ANYTHING related to Adobe CLOUD because it COMPLETELY CRASHEs my system. Adobe is SOOOOOO resource heavy. It takes all my bandwidth. I guess now I can start using Lightroom. But I don't trust Adobe for anything.... so I fully expect some type of clich.... some secret backdoor to their server where they still suck up all my bandwidth. Adobe is NOTORIOUS for this. I am thankful they now offer local storage.... but this is after years and years and years of users bitching about this. So I find it hard to say "thank you" and you know the folks at Adobe did this reluntantly while kicking and screaming.
    Sorry, but I am just not impressed by the AMAZING update that just connects to my local folders. This has been done since freaking 1999. Wow Adobe, your amazing. HA!

    • @jordanking7711
      @jordanking7711 7 місяців тому

      People were obviously complaining about it, and upset that they shouldn't need to do that with all the syncing to the cloud. Which is why Adobe listened and changed it. And no it's not 'exactly' like LrC in my opinion either. LrC has a LOT more than what LR does with collections and modules and that kind of thing. LrC does NOT hold a candle to the new LR.

    Congratulation on making Lightroom Classic/Lightroom even more confusing !
    We have now 2 separate products, neither of them doing a particular good job in this day and age.
    What could have been a simple switch to sync collection to the Cloud in "Classic", turned into Lightroom, unusable for professional users.
    And it's even worse on iPad, as after 4 years, it's still bug ridden, and is still missing basic features such as being capable of entering a custom aspect ratio for crop.

I never used Adobe because here in Alaska we don't have good internet speeds. So synching to the cloud took HOURs. Not just about hours. But DOUBLE DIGIT hours. I couldn't even send emails because ABODE was HOGGING all the resources. So now adobe is patting themselves on the back for giving us local storage. Whooppee. This is ridicolous. People want a catalogue that is backed up to the cloud so that they know their photos are safe.
