I remember how the spark of excitement hit me when I watched one of your videos for the first time. Today, this excitement culminated in buying my first wrist watch and I thought this is a worthy opportunity to leave my first comment. What a coincidence this is the day you announce a major change for The Urban Gentry...
Anyway, the watch I bought is a used, Swiss-made, automatic diver with a bronze case that developed a nice patina already. The dial and bezel are deep blue, my favourite color. Whenever I get conscious about the watch being on my wrist (which happens multiple times per minute), all the amazing things come into my mind: the great looks of it, the craftsmanship, the heritage. It is so much more than just a piece of equipment telling the time.
I want to thank you for bringing this enriching, new excitement to my life!

TGV - I remember a time years ago you weren't feeling well at all following a hospital stay. The next day after your hospital release, you shot and edited a 30 minute watch review for this community! Your work ethic, determination and creativity will serve you well in any future endeavors. Go forward with confidence my friend. I'm excited to see where you take this platform you've built.
Having been in hospital for 3 months straight at one time, I know how boring it is, and you get anxious to do something tight away after leaving. I'll bet he had it all done in his head, down to the last image, and only had to get out the camera to get it recorded and edited.
I joined when you had around 20k subs, and I do miss those days where you were talking about being a gentleman :D , that is the kind of content I would love to see more
I think I've watched TGV since he posted a video of him making a cup of coffee. I don't even like coffee but I was hooked! The way he described it was like something out of a Shakespearean novel! There's a certain mystique about TGVs presentation style and he could do a video on snails in your garden , but you'd tune in to watch it.
I've come back to this video just to say how concerned I was when it was posted, but how delighted I am that a year on the gentry is going strong. I'm high functioning autistic and this channel has been a great comfort to me, as well as being an excellent resource to explore a hobby. Onwards and upwards.
This was the place I found like-minded souls who loved watches but also had an appreciation for life and being a better version of yourself. Keep the gentry flag flying and God bless!

I wish you and your family well, now and in the future.
I only recently found your channel this past February after the passing of my Father. I was given his father’s old Hamilton pocket watch. My dad and his siblings saw a great deal of the country, back in the 50’s,from trains because my granddaddy worked for the railroad.
My father had great respect for time. When he was making a point he would say “That’s Railroad time!”. Because of Dad I’ve always worn a watch however a watch was like , a shirt, a pair of paints, etc. just part of what I wore. No thought given to it really, apart form the utility of it.
Receiving my granddad’s pocket watch sparked an interest. It connected me to my father in a small, meaningful, physical way. That connection got me interested in the idea of collecting, so I started educating myself to watches. Your channel was the first one I watched. I was impressed by your knowledge, manners, excitement, and humility. Your channel has been a great resource for me into the wonderful world of watch collecting, horology, and a desire to leave my own son and grandson with a few things to spark conversations now, and aid in recalling memories later.

So it's 1am in the UK and I'm tottering off to bed, and my eyes saw the head line to the video. I can honestly say my heart sank a little, the Gentry has become a part of my life and even my eldest son has become a follower. Chatting with my son about watches and the channel meant we had "proper conversations". I'm glad your going to maintain it in some form, and harking back to the "Golden Years" will certainly be of interest.
Never underestimate the joy you have brought to people, I have depression and anything that has the ability to maintain my attention for a period of time has to be very good indeed. My love of watches was reignited and brings a welcome distraction to bad days.

Hello there TGV, I hope you are well. I just wanted to say that I've started watching your channel about 1-1/2 years because I was starting my watch collection and my five into the world of horology and your channel has made my passion for it grow and my intelligence of it as well. You have influenced my collection, which being a newcomer, consists of a Seiko 5 snk805, a Casio f91w, an SUG world time gmt, and a citizen prodiver, and several Timex field watches as well as a Hamilton field watch! So thank you for taking me on this adventure in horology
I am in my late 40’s and after decades of being a cursory fan of watches from a craftsmanship and history standpoint, I recently decided to dive in a bit and start properly learning about them and wearing one daily. They have always spoken to me as an extremely personal item, an item that has witnessed pivotal points in their owner's life as well as being an example of humanities ingenuity.
Literally two weeks ago I discovered The Urban Gentry UA-cam channel. Although I myself am somewhat of a polished barbarian, I took an instant like to TGV. We seemed to share many interests and I enjoyed going through his back catalog and enjoyed the UGWC FB group as well (there really seems to be some pretty good people there).
So, here we are, I'm surely not an OG, but as a person who is interested in TGV and his general interests, I greatly look forward to the conversation heading back towards more varied topics. I hope TGV continues to have the time and desire to spend a bit here and with us.

I actually had 2 preorders for watches. A Ball and a Tudor and I literally just cancelled today. Kind of sad that I had to but the key is HAD to. I would’ve loved to keep those 2 orders but it would be a selfish move on my part. When the time is right, I’ll continue my collection.

I bought the husband who never wears a watch, the green Alpinist and introduced him to your channel. His watch collection grew and I inherited the Alpinist. You know your hooked when you look to identify the watch in movies. Thank you for sharing your love and knowledge about watches. It was infectious. The Great Recession is real - One of the first moves of a struggling business is to cut costs; Watchbox has certainly been experiencing a major turn-down in sales...
While the watches I wear aren’t considered fine timepieces (Nautica and Casio G Shock). You are the reason I wear a watch everyday as I did as a young person. It’s amazing how much it’s changed my life for the better!

I have to be honest, I’m excited about you getting back to the roots of the channel. I haven’t tuned in as much over the past year or so. It did seem like it was getting a little commercialized. I love the old EDC, clothing, and coffee type videos as much or better than the watch videos. Good luck and can’t wait to see what’s next!
I’ve been liquidating some of mine one or two at a time for about a year now. I’ve added a couple others. So far I’ve only found one watch I wish I had kept. It’s been fun actually.
Now with everything going on, I can’t keep this up... I rely on trade shows to make a living, and that’s not happening. I’ve sold off about 10 pieces recently and have 4-5 more that I must let go.
Fortunately a friend who was ousted by the oil collapse got a new career, and has been buying with some investments he cashed out. So I was able to help my friend build his collection and pay my bills. That makes me happy.
This has put a lot into perspective for me about what is important and how much stuff I need (or not) to be happy. So there is a silver lining to these dark days.
I hope you are well, I’ve always enjoyed the content. I think going back to basics is exactly what this world needs. The world needs gentlemen again. Best regards, stay safe.
Glad you're continuing on after the Watchbox contract ended. Always enjoyed your videos. Had a bit of a windfall after doing my federal taxes. Aside from some pressing needs, there were discretionary funds left over. Now have a Bulova Accutron II Moonview (Precisionist movement inside), Glycine Airman 42 Purist, Dagaz T2 Typhoon, Aristo Desau 1 (Bauhaus) 38, Movado Horwitt Automatic, and a Bulova Precisionist Claremont. The long pent up demand - an itch that's been begging to be scratched - has been fulfilled with some pieces I've wanted for a long time now. Found them at rock bottom prices. Keep doing reviews!

Thing that got me hooked on watches PERIOD, along with the lesson I've taken from my time as a part of the Gentry on this journey is from the first video of yours I saw. That would be a review on the $100 Seiko field watch, and what sold me on watches and horology as a hobby was your equal respect for this $100 thing you could buy on Amazon, and your wearing gloves out of respect for that piece as much as for the thousand dollar Omegas you also had laying around. Much love for taking on the hobby the correct way and teaching it surely to a new generation that can hopefully carry on with respect as you did. Good luck with future endeavors of course 🙏🏽
