  • Hello again everyone! In this video I go for my first attempt at creating scenic water. I wanted something flowing so decided to go with a riverside scene. With having no knowledge of how to make realistic looking water on a budget I have a few mistakes along the way. I forgot to mention the gloss varnish I use is from hobby lobby which can be found at the link below.

Putting the grass on wet paint... I call it, the 'Dry-Rub' method. :D

I know that's technically right LOL, but there's always a specific term in every subject even though they all have the same meaning :)

    Hi. Just saw your video.
    Beautiful work on your river.
    The method you used adding
scenery to a wet surface is
called Zip Texturing using white glue and water before
    and after or paint.

Thanks! And definitely trying to pump out videos whenever I can. And what millimeter of grass did you use in your video posted recently? I still have tons of research to do on static grass.

You did a great job on everything , I like how the rocks turned out . Cool effect of grass snowing . Where do you get that foamboard adhesive ? Thanks for sharing .

Thanks! The foamboard adhesive I use can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. Loctite PL300 foam formula. Honestly it's just rebranded multipurpose construction adhesive.

I am also still playing with how to best get a good river effect, so appreciated your video. Is this scene going to be incorporated into your layout? Or is it a trial diorama? If it is going to be part of the layout, I am going to enjoy how you incorporate it in with the rest of the scenery. Keep up the good work.

This is just a trial section. The planned river section is going to be about x5 times larger in width. I plan to have this large river wrap around a resort town with a small branch line. What methods have you tried already? I was going to try that epoxy/resin stuff but it would end up costing more in the long run for me.

@@daguy8151 I have been playing with Woodland Scenics' Realistic Water. It does not require mixing - just pour, but you need to keep it very small pours, otherwise it will never properly set. At present, I would also like to try a couple of the resin based pours which actually may come in slightly cheaper than the Woodland Scenics. I now may and look for some clear gloss varnish, as your attempt actually looks good in the end.
One final point - you can also buy gloss Mod Podge. I have used this on my tests and then used an airbrush to blow the ripples.
You were asking one of the others about static grass. I have done a fair bit of static grass application - mainly used Woodland Scenics 2mm and 4mm grasses. Using anything bigger in N scale is too much. I have seen some videos done in Britain where they use 1mm grass, but I have not been able to find any of this in Australia. Unfortunately, I just cannot seem to get videos made, so I cannot show you my techniques, but briefly, I initially coat the area with fine turf such as Woodland Scenics Dirt, then when that has dried, coat the area again with Mod Podge and apply a mix of the grasses - normally 2 different 2mm grasses and a little 4mm grass. I sometimes use a darker shade 4mm, and sometimes a lighter shade, but always a contrast to the 2mm mix. I mix them before putting them in the applicator so that the result is a variety of different colours. I leave for about 10 minutes then vacuum up the surplus. Vacuuming also helps make the grass stand up. A tip that I picked up from the wargaming crowd, is to then spray the grass with a spray matt medium to take the shine off the grass. I have use 6mm grass around the water to represent reeds.

How did you color the varnish? It looks like it's still in the tube.

I added die into the bottle. I think it was acrylic paint
