    On the first E chord and the stretching to the 9th fret with your pinky finker,just put your thumb in the middle behind the fret board in back,instead of wrapping your thumb around the back of the neck,this allows you to make the stretches easier.

    You left out the most important part !! The slide guitar. It defines the whole song.For anyone out there who wants to play the slide part,be sure to tune your guitar to an open E tuning,and keep your slide directly over the fret you want to play,not in between .This is one of the most fun songs ever to play slide guitar on !

      @@GuitarSongsChannel Oh, Mike, sorry I didn't notice Mike being your name. At any rate, thank you for getting back with me so quick. Also thanks for the information you added to that reply. This is my problem. I never learned how to read or write music.
      Thanks to the internet, along with a few great teachers, that have their lessons on UA-cam (that I use), as most of us usually do. I just search the song I'm interested in & then pick the guy/guys from my list for the particular song.
      With that being said, since I am sloooowly learning how to read music, I've been working on ''Alternate Tuning'' because one of my favorite bands, CS&N, Stills uses alternate tuning a lot & because I have so many guitars, I just leave them in those tunings.
      Because I love playing guitar, I have taught 2 sons how to play guitar & I've included working with 2 grandsons. To make life easier, I bought about 8 extra guitars, 4 bass & a Yamaha electric keyboard so the guys were able to choose what instrument they wanted to learn on first. Keyboards I'm not very good at but for anyone who originally learned how to play by ear, that's been my saving grace because I can usually figure out the chords going by sound. It was that part of learning I past on. I have told 1 son & 1 grandson to start by learning how to read music & then choose which instrument (visa-versa actually). So far learning & playing is becoming to be a lot easier for them....
      I believe I'll subscribe to your channel and see where it will lead me to because the more knowledge I get, the more I can safely pass on to them & also so I can better point them in the right direction.
      Sorry for my long reply that started with a comment about a Joe Walsh song & the tuning he used but that's how I've got to where I'm at now. I'll say this about my sons & grandsons, Not so much that I am going to continue being a teacher I suppose, but rather more of the support they will need. I enjoy listening to my 22 year old grandson (who is living with us), as he practices on the either his bass or keyboard....
      Thank you again for your reply, (I'll check your site out. I know I need to do that for me & for them).......M.D..........

    You mentioned not to strum too many strings but never mentioned which strings we should strum, for each part can you clarify?

    • @GuitarSongsChannel
      @GuitarSongsChannel  Рік тому

      Hi Mike! When you play power chords with the Root on the 5th string the most important string NOT TO PLAY is the 6th. You can strum the other strings but try to mute the ones that are NOT part of the chord shape. You can do that by muting the other strings with the lower part of your finger. Bottom line: The important strings to strum are the ones that are part of the chord shape. In this case, strings 5 and 4 for the first guitar part & 5 4 and 3 for the second guitar part. Hope this answers your question.

    a guitar is an instrument whose sound is completely dependent and different, depending upon the settings and type of amplifier, plus any foot pedals it is routing through...I would never do a tutorial on a rock guitar without FIRST showing just how I achieve that particular sound. For example, as a keyboard player, I would never start by telling you what notes I play BEFORE showing the type of keyboard, the specific sound patch AND any modifications I have made to the patch.

    The song is actually played in an open G tuning. Just like "Help Me Through The Night." Watch any video of Joe playing the song, and it's obvious. He's playing major chords with one finger. Also, open tunings are better for slide playing

      It sure is! I get a lot of request from students who aren't quite that far in their guitar journey, so often I try to teach them standard tuning to avoid the further complication.
      Thanks for the response, Matt!

      Steve, maybe a part two to this video in the open G would be of interest as well.

      I wasn't debating whether it was correctly played or not, just that he was playing in the E position.

      Guys guys, Joe plays this song in open E tuning. He's tuned to the open E chord and plays the entire song with a slide.

    When I play this with the recording it sounds like it should be up a half semi-tone. Basically starting on an F power chord not the E power chord. Is that correct?

      @GuitarSongsChannel  Рік тому

      Hi! Thanks for your comment and feedback. I think the open E tuning is mainly for the slide guitar part but the tune is in E so it makes sense. Open E would be EBEG#BE so we need to raise strings 4 and 5 one whole step and the G string up to G#. Thanks again for the comment! 👍
