Great tutorial. Also great that you're not arrogant about it, that you keep it open, both the way to take the chord and the way to put personal touch to it. Keep up the very good work and thanks for inspiring tutorials
I also like to be reminded not to nitpick too much. It's easy to get consumed with hitting every little possible nuance of the studio cut. Sometimes, I wonder if Page even cut those or if he used one of his studio buddies. Because live, you never know what he's going to do. If Page isn't worried about the studio version, why am I? Too me, that's the best thing about watching great guitar players give UA-cam song lessons. Most of them aren't particularly obsessed with the studio version. It can be satisfying to try to nail the studio track perfectly, but it's also a huge waste of time. 99.999% of people aren't going to care. Devoting those hours to something else is almost certainly a better idea. Ironically, the best evidence of this is watching famous studio guitar players not play the studio version note for note. If a guy that has played on hundreds of Platinum albums isn't trying to get every possible pick scratch perfectly, then what in the heck am I doing? Acting like a fool, apparently.

The way you explain each riff and lead is super effective and allows even a slow learner like me to follow everything completely. I also like that you repeat things to help the new parts to soak in. I really appreciate that and will be looking for more of the songs you demonstrate because of it. Thanks so much!

Hey Steve...on the main riff, I always did a half step up bend on the A string. Yes...no....maybe? Not sure if that is what Jimmy did but it just sounds cool. Rock on.

Your lessons are just the best. THE END! There’s a ton of people on YT that teach guitar and there’s a lot of really good ones but I can follow and understand you far easier. When ever I’m asked to recommend someone to teach them guitar you’re the one I always recommend. I don’t play in a band I’m just learning guitar for my own enjoyment, although I have been asked to join 1 or 2. Now, thanks to you, I can play along with my favourite albums and along side my guitar hero’s. 2yrs ago I was stuck in a rut and couldn’t seem to progress. Then my dads cousin, who you may know, recommend your YT channel and straight away I was out of that rut and on my way to becoming a half decent guitar player which is all down to you so thank you. BTW my dads cousin is my No1 guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore.

What a great step by step lesson! Only in my wildest dreams could I play this entire solo. Stuck with it for a week or so and I got it, thanks Steve!!!
In the opening riff I slide up on the 6th string to the "B" on the 7th fret, but then when playing the "D" on the 5th string I slightly bend the 5th string up (toward the 6th string) and let the open 4th string (open "D") ring with the slightly bent "D" on the 5th string. This is how I hear it on the recording. What do you think?

Thank you steve!! Not only are you a great musician! But, you're a Hell of a teacher too!! I now know the lead for "whole lotta love". I look forward to learning more from you! My ONLY request is, that you please give the string number as well as fret number when talking about leads. I noticed sometimes you forget the string number. But other than that I have nothing else to say except ..Keep The Videos Coming!!! Please..😁
It's not good to play with a lot of vibe when you are teaching.. it's too much for beginner's to learn at once. It's better to play correct but simple.
Exceptional. Thank you. I have the "official" box set LZ sheet music, which is great, but this type is lesson is just perfect. Love the last point of understanding the tab but mixing with what you will. Subscribed.

I like how Steve explains this video. How he makes you understand that you don't have to learn a song note for note to make it perfect. Jimmy Page is the perfect example of this. I can't remember him playing any song the way exactly the same way. So...this is a good way of understanding how to improvise a song and still stay in the song form. Sound right?

Good stuff Steve - wouldn’t hurt to mention the outro when the main riff pans back and forth between the E5 power chord and the Esus to Emaj (EA strings slide up to 12 pull to 11 on the A string for the sus and maj 3) It’s definitely a little thing - but just one more small detail of what made Jimmy’s playing so flavorful full and tasteful I’ve said for years - there really was no one better than jimmy when it came to using the major and minor blues pentatonic (and mixolydian to a lesser extent)... his feel for the sweet notes and his timing can’t be replicated People call him sloppy - which is bullshit. You have to put in context - live he was the only guitarist and he was quite successful at managing to play all those lead parts while keeping a steady rhythm and filling the time with rhythm parts in between all the licks In the studio he could overdub 3-4-5 tracks but he somehow managed to either replicate or even better innovate the songs to sound different live but yet still sound great live Oh and the peeps taking about the opening riff the 1/4 step bend on the D note of the A string in sync with the open D string to get the dissonance and tension.. it’s pretty hard to play it clean without a good deal of practice
Hey my guy, I am so critical with learning things and you helped me so much... "Don't worry if you hit that open once or twice just make it sound good and make it work for you". I Totally needed to fhkin hear that lol.
Hey Steve I use your system and another guy's system who you probably know, I wish I would have seen this video before I don't know what it is about how you teach but my comprehension level goes up to 10-fold, I absolutely love your theory and technique courses I own several I also really hope you start doing more song lesson videos you are equally as good either way
You need another half step on that final bend, Steve. It goes 17(E) 19(F#) bends up to 21 (G#) twice, but on the third bend nails the 22(A). So, two full bends with a 1 1/2 bend to close it out. It gives it the little da, da, daa, de-da! It gives a little swing.
Steve exhibits kindness and delivers his message clearly and humbly.
Thanks for the kind words, Mark! :-)

I also like to be reminded not to nitpick too much. It's easy to get consumed with hitting every little possible nuance of the studio cut.
I just wanted to say that you are one of great teacher. They way you explain has so much clarity and easy to absorb.
Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for watching. :-)

The way you explain each riff and lead is super effective and allows even a slow learner like me to follow everything completely. I also like that you repeat things to help the new parts to soak in. I really appreciate that and will be looking for more of the songs you demonstrate because of it. Thanks so much!
You are most welcome!

That's the nicest guitar I've ever seen. I'm in love with it. Plus, it's playing one of the greatest rock riffs of all time.

Hey Steve...on the main riff, I always did a half step up bend on the A string.
Yes...no....maybe?
Not sure if that is what Jimmy did but it just sounds cool.
Rock on.
What kind of distortion are you using?
Nice lesson, Steve is one of the best on YT.

Best sounding guitar for that song that I've heard short of Jimmy's.
Fantastic Steve! Thanks for sharing...
solos are so cool thanks you teach it so well

What a great step by step lesson! Only in my wildest dreams could I play this entire solo. Stuck with it for a week or so and I got it, thanks Steve!!!
AWESOME to hear!!!!
Sounds like it to me. Someone showed me that long ago.
That is how it sounds and how the tablature for Mothership shows it is played.
Thanks everybody for watching! :-)

Please..😁
merci beaucoup, ça aide bien
Good one Steve!
As a beginner guitar player i think im gonna learn this as my first solo!
Could you manage it? Im gonna give it a shot myself :D
When you play the D note in the main riff, you gotta also drone the D string to get the true vibe ! Nice job.
Subscribed.
Thank you!

Kool Steve you are the man !
Thanks for all the kind words, Nicky! And thanks for watching and sharing! :-)

Check out how Joe Walsh plays the main riff in his Gibson guitar setup video. He shows Jimmy's secret. I play it like you but I think his is correct.
There is no correct way. Paige always played it differently every time.
I saw that too! Let the open D ring and slight bend of the A
Steve could you please do a video on bending. Mostly on the distance. Wether it's. Half whole or double. I have terrible time finding the right spot I'm usually flat. Ty.
if you're flat, bend it farther! haha
Steve your're such a badass - thanx for the endingsolo… (after 759.238.256 years of trying…)
Thats so crazy Steve. I was working on this song and all of a sudden i found your video.

Very Helpfull Steve...
Thanks Bro
Awesomeness! Thanks Steve.
Awesome video! Do you have an idea on how to do that thing on the verse? It sounded like an airplane flying by, nyoommmm... Thanks a lot!
Good stuff Steve - wouldn’t hurt to mention the outro when the main riff pans back and forth between the E5 power chord and the Esus to Emaj (EA strings slide up to 12 pull to 11 on the A string for the sus and maj 3)
It’s definitely a little thing - but just one more small detail of what made Jimmy’s playing so flavorful full and tasteful
I’ve said for years - there really was no one better than jimmy when it came to using the major and minor blues pentatonic (and mixolydian to a lesser extent)... his feel for the sweet notes and his timing can’t be replicated
People call him sloppy - which is bullshit.
You have to put in context - live he was the only guitarist and he was quite successful at managing to play all those lead parts while keeping a steady rhythm and filling the time with rhythm parts in between all the licks
In the studio he could overdub 3-4-5 tracks but he somehow managed to either replicate or even better innovate the songs to sound different live but yet still sound great live
Oh and the peeps taking about the opening riff the 1/4 step bend on the D note of the A string in sync with the open D string to get the dissonance and tension.. it’s pretty hard to play it clean without a good deal of practice
He’s a nice guy. Good job.
Steven Can u do a lesson on Since I I have been loving you ?
Regards
Stephen Lodise
Hey my guy, I am so critical with learning things and you helped me so much... "Don't worry if you hit that open once or twice just make it sound good and make it work for you". I Totally needed to fhkin hear that lol.
Yes, people get so analistic !!! Does it sound like the song? Have you ever heard a version of a song live the same way twice? Me neither. Rock on!!!!
Hey Steve I use your system and another guy's system who you probably know, I wish I would have seen this video before I don't know what it is about how you teach but my comprehension level goes up to 10-fold, I absolutely love your theory and technique courses I own several I also really hope you start doing more song lesson videos you are equally as good either way
Thank you U tube ,!
Do the solo first next time 😊lol
I can’t wait 😊
You need another half step on that final bend, Steve. It goes 17(E) 19(F#) bends up to 21 (G#) twice, but on the third bend nails the 22(A). So, two full bends with a 1 1/2 bend to close it out. It gives it the little da, da, daa, de-da! It gives a little swing.
Thanks for your comment. Those big bends can definitely be quite tricky : )
@@GuitarSongsChannel Love your channel, man. Keep up the great work.
