I'm really drawn in by the drama of Jonas vs Pogi. The fact that Jonas was so torn by the fact that he couldn't hang with Pogi made me respect him more. He respected his position as defending champ and pushed himself to defend. At the end of the day, I still think Pogi lost the TDF (especially in 2022) because of the strength of the Visma team. He and Vingegaard were very even, but because of team tactics and strength, Pogi got himself in situations where he didn't fuel correctly. He was young and thought he was invincible, and tried to cover every attack. This year, the UAE team is stronger in the mountains, and Pogi is stronger for sure because of Jonas' accident. Next TDF will be great again. I'll still be rooting for Pogi, but I have respect for how much Vingegaard cares.
I believe they are both great champions & competitors yet very different personalities. Which is what has stoked the rivalry probably more in the fan base than between them as individuals because I think they have a great respect for each other. Which seems even more remarkable...
I feel sorry for Jonas today too. But he did the same thing to Tadej last year. VL/Jonas ruthlessly killed Tadej. He humiliated Tadej last year. He broke Tadej mentally. It was so obvious in the famous photo of Tadej was sitting down staring down the floor behind Jonas signing yellow jersey. I guess it's a cruel sport huh? One day you are on the top and another day you are at the bottom.
It has been an amazing tour on so many levels. There is so much emotion shown by these superb athletes in victory or defeat. It shows us what it means to the protagonists. To say "just wait until next year's tour when....," I think is glib and detracts from these wonderful history making 3 weeks. Elite athletes in any sport rarely get to compete niggle free or with a smooth run in. They are on a knife edge when at peak fitness. Jonas, what a release of emotion after the line. The respect and friendship they have for one and other is a lesson to all, (well apart from Lance, who called them out on it) . Great show, well on. Vive Le tour
I spent a good portion of my career treating trauma cases. Humans’ healing processes after trauma is exponential. Healing is really rapid for the first 2 to 6 weeks depending on the tissue involved (bone, muscle, skin etc). After that initial phase healing slows down but continues for months. Jonas’ body his still healing, his fractures are gaining strength, his ligaments and tendons are still healing. Not only that but the human body detrains really quickly and regains conditioning more slowly than other species. Of course he is not as good as he has been or as good as he could be. It would be physiologically impossible in the month and a half he had to train after his serious injuries.
One of the most disturbing ways to cheat in sport I ever heard about is for disabled competitors to break bones in limbs they don't use before an event because the healing process gives a performance boost. I was recently talking to someone who worked in this field for years and he told me of other bizarre methods of cheating. Anecdotally, a friend of mine finally won a national championship 6 weeks after a big crash where he broke various bones.
About time someone said this. It blows my mind the number of people that thing it's physiologically possible for Jonas to be peaking this close to a trauma like that.

I’m certain Tadej felt pretty much the same way on the Col de la Loze last year. I felt bad for Jonas but I felt even worse I think for Jorgensen. Still I’ve got no issue with Pogacar taking the stage.

I'm a Visma fan but for me the best individual rider is Pogi. Felt bad for them because their team is not 100% on this tour but JV still gave it a fight. But I agree too on @thenicenoise and felt bad for Pogi last year on Col de la Loze when he said "I'm gone', I'm dead". Hoping next year both team are on 100% and will give us a very close fight until the last stages.
Remember, Pogacar is only 25. Hes been racing Pro level since 2018 and UWT since 2019 while being competitive. He was never more than 3 minutes away from the lead in all his muti-stage races in those years. Compared to a lot of riders, hes entering his prime. He's a generational talent that lives near and trains in the Alps. He has a new coach. Are we really going to act surprised by how dominate he is? Its more beleiveable that Pogacar dominates a month after the Giro than Jonas dominating let alone getting 2nd 86 days or lesss than 3 months after a broken collarbone, punctured lungs and broken ribs. ( Im more sensible than Muo and have been pretty accurate since Stage 11)
as for what I keep reading in all media "experts commentators" and "journalists" state that what pogacar is doing is just impossible, and he must be doping. There is no place for criteria, common sense, knowledge, science or anything that would be mentally sane to be written/said. I agree with you, plus, we have to also remember, all the changes that have been produced in the last 5-10 years over feeding on & off the bike, training methods, and so many other factors, part of the logical evolution of both sports and the entire human race...

Armstrong and Pantini didn't start making waves until they were in their mid 20s. 1994-96. Pogacar was racing pro level at 20, UWT at 21 and won at 22. Athletes in the modern era are getting better at a younger age. Science has allowed for athletes to be prepared better along with their genetics. Top athletes are in the 1% of human capabilities and with how accessible information is, dominance like this isn't hard to imagine. You can be surprised by how Pogacar dominates, but his history supports his rise and dominance.

He will never get to Pogi/Jonas lvl at that age + Remco is on upward trajectory. Roglic can contend for Giro/Vuelta win for next 2seasons, but if any of the 3riders mentioned above show up, he is not a favorite to win.

changing coach could be massive. imagine two coaches, one coach that is known as one of the best in the world that uses more traditional methods that have been proven to work. a second coach that is less proven but wants to use more tech and modern science to guide their training methods. different riders will react differently to different methods it could just be pog is reacting really well to the new methods
Jonas was perfectly entitled to shed a some tears after such an ordeal. This edition of the TdF hasn't gone his way. His emotions may not have even been about the tour. Men can cry. It's totally ok.
I don't think its as simple as SanMilan bad, new coach good. The difference that this or that coach can make comes down to their coaching philosophy and training methodologies vis-a-vis the athlete and the stage of the athletes career. Who you need to be to win also comes down to the context. You can absolutely imagine that a philosophy like SanMilan's Zone 2, which emphasizes having a deep aerobic base from which to draw from, would work exclusively for 99% of the population and take them to great heights. But Pogi especially, battling a team like peak Jumbo-Visma / Visma-Leaseabike, apparently needed to go beyond a Zone 2 emphasis to fight back by redlining his attackers more brutally than they could redline him. Grischa made it known that their strategy to beating Pogi in 2022 and 2023 was to redline his TSS over the 3 weeks of the Tour, throwing one amazing rider after another at him, with Roglic to boot. His dominance this year comes down to his having a stronger team, weaker opponent teams, and having extended his TSS resilience by spending many more training minutes in Zones 4+ than he had under SanMilan.
It was absolutely insane to get Jonas into this tour. At the point he is in healing after a hiking fall that didn't end up with a punctured lung, I was just back on the bike riding around the neighborhood. He needs way more recovery time. I don't expect to see him the Vuelta.
Jonas even appearing for the TDF is a huge win!! It is unbelievable he is even competing, and lets be honest clearly 2nd best this year with what happened to him in April! People saying he is doping, or that he is clearly fine as he said so..... He is probably under huge pressure from Jumbo management to compete, especially with Kuss not competing, they have 0 big name to push for marketing. I feel Jumbo would of asked Jonas if he was at least 60% fit, he 'should' go to the TDF. Would a 💯 fit Jonas be able to stop Tagej, especially with the super team UAE has....im not sure. But it would definitely of provided more excitement.
the emotion is understandable. going through what he did with the crash and performing at this level is a testament to how tough jonas is mentally and physically. they both have incredible teams around them to get them to this point in the race. how long did it take remco to come back to form after his bad crash 2yrs ago. and a testament to remco to be riding so well almost on his own compared to what jonas and pogacar have backing them up.
In a postrace interview today Remco stated that he would prefer 3rd and a stage win ( ie the tt) to 2nd spot. So he will be trying to rest his legs tomorrow. Or he wants Jonas to think he will.... Pacman for Pog- like the Cannibal for Merckx- eating everyone in his path. That may even stick.
Dont want to talk about doping or no doping, but just wanted to say that Pogacars performances are crazy. He must be such a disciplined and dedicated human being. I mean you barely see him making mistakes, he almost always comes out on top, its crazy.

The man had a punctured lung and hadn't raced a day since his crash. Last time pog had a broken wrist and jonas pummeled him. It sucks that Jonas wasn't ready, that's cycling. It's sad for us because it could've been a real contest.
Let's not forget what jumbo bisma did to pogi last year,from the first week they wanted distroy him and play dirty because they know pogi hadn't had suffent base training.I feel for jorgeston but that how it is.
I think he loves to win the stages that finish on the mountain top so much. He may try again tomorrow and do whatever he got left on the ITT. Unfortunately there will not be a drink during the last stage as it used to be.
For my two cents, I lost all respect for TJ Vangardern with his stupid comment about Pog being "classless" by winning all stages. Eddie M and Pog would vehemently, as I, disagree. What a knob.
The thing is that Tadej is probably still in zone 2 at 5 watts per kg then he uses glycogen to finish off the last 10 to 15 kms. As long as he's fuelled up and is handling the heat, it's going to be very difficult for anyone to beat him
I think UAE has a great team this year, they are all very strong and give Pogacar great support. On the other hand Vingegaard has to make do without Roglic and Kuss while van Aert doesn't seem to be at his best level. We have seen him often nearly alone when Pogacar still had plenty of his team members around him. I think this is a big part of it too and I hope they can provide Vingegaard with a competitive team for the coming years.
Pog is amazing, and I wish him well. But I think Vingegaard hasn't fully recovered, and will be a force to be reckoned with. And Remco is doing so well, too.
If all Members of Visma and UAE are healthy for next years tdf then it will be a superb one. Imagine a UAR Team like this and Visma back with a completly healthy Vingegaard, Kuss and Kruiswijk.
Yes to Emily for sports psychology! It is huge. Nathan MacKinnon (NHL) got a sports psychologist in his 8th year and saw massive success. He then won a Stanley Cup (championship for non-hockey fans haha)

Have we forgotten Pogi's injury last year, coming back from a broken wrist with only 6 weeks training - and how the Visma team focused on isolating Pogi and cheering when the "broke" him. He's also just won the Giro. I'm not knocking Jonas, but give Pog his due - this is a great rivalry and it's hardly Tadej's fault that he is this good.
Jonas can and has hit the power numbers Tadej is hitting in 2024 tdf. He's actually hit higher numbers. He'll get his best fitness back and improve some more in the future.
I’m happy to call it, it is Pogs to lose, everything goes his way, a crash happens he makes it through clean, no mechanicals, plus he is just far out in front by way of fitness. You look at other rides, crashes, mechanicals or are coming back from crashes
I haven't really followed cycling much since the Lance Armstrong debacle until this year, and other than Jasper Philipson, I like all the guys. And I absolutely mean NO disrespect to anyone. But I find it so difficult to believe that these guys aren't on something they shouldn't be on. That's not to take away their talent or insanely hard work, but how could they be beating all sorts of records if they were clean? Cycling isn't the only sport I feel this way about. When I watch Athletics, for example, and someone beats a world record by a significant amount, I worry, and feel it's just a matter of time until the truth comes out. But I really hope I'm wrong.

He 'should' have won in 2022, but let his ego override his racing brain and tried to 'overboss' Jumbo. TP greatest hurdle to a Grand Tour win is himself!, he is almost incapable of not over exposing his 'balls' but who doesn't enjoy his style of racing!!? There has to be behind the scenes talks about doing the Vuelta....Now that would cement his place in cycling history as if he hasn't already. I'd let RE do the business today to try and take time on JV and wear out both during this stage and exploit them at the end for the win (if it's on the table) and at least strengthen his position even more for the TT.
Jonas is lacking base. He’s pulling 7w kg as required but he’s too tired later in the Tour. I like Jonas a lot more now, I’m so proud of him. I wish him the best.

Z2 method has been criticised by Blummenfelt and Iden coach and others o several times, Z2 training is not the last coca of the desert in terms of training methodology
no slight on Remco but absent a mechanical or a crash, Pog is highly likely to win that final TT. it's literally on Pog's doorstep. the motivation will be off the charts.

New Flash to VL. Tadej has been hinted that he was going to go for the stage 19. He's been saying that he has trained at Bonette and UAE training camp was at IZola. Top athletes are in the 1% of human capabilities and with how accessible information is, dominance like this isn't hard to imagine. changing coach could be massive. imagine two coaches, one coach that is known as one of the best in the world that uses more traditional methods that have been proven to work. a second coach that is less proven but wants to use more tech and modern science to guide their training methods. different riders will react differently to different methods it could just be pog is reacting really well to the new methods

I don't think its as simple as SanMilan bad, new coach good. The difference that this or that coach can make comes down to their coaching philosophy and training methodologies vis-a-vis the athlete and the stage of the athletes career. Who you need to be to win also comes down to the context. You can absolutely imagine that a philosophy like SanMilan's Zone 2, which emphasizes having a deep aerobic base from which to draw from, would work exclusively for 99% of the population and take them to great heights. But Pogi especially, battling a team like peak Jumbo-Visma / Visma-Leaseabike, apparently needed to go beyond a Zone 2 emphasis to fight back by redlining his attackers more brutally than they could redline him. Grischa made it known that their strategy to beating Pogi in 2022 and 2023 was to redline his TSS over the 3 weeks of the Tour, throwing one amazing rider after another at him, with Roglic to boot. His dominance this year comes down to his having a stronger team, weaker opponent teams, and having extended his TSS resilience by spending many more training minutes in Zones 4+ than he had under SanMilan.

It was absolutely insane to get Jonas into this tour. At the point he is in healing after a hiking fall that didn't end up with a punctured lung, I was just back on the bike riding around the neighborhood. He needs way more recovery time. I don't expect to see him the Vuelta.

the emotion is understandable. going through what he did with the crash and performing at this level is a testament to how tough jonas is mentally and physically. they both have incredible teams around them to get them to this point in the race. how long did it take remco to come back to form after his bad crash 2yrs ago. and a testament to remco to be riding so well almost on his own compared to what jonas and pogacar have backing them up.

The man had a punctured lung and hadn't raced a day since his crash. Last time pog had a broken wrist and jonas pummeled him. It sucks that Jonas wasn't ready, that's cycling. It's sad for us because it could've been a real contest.

The thing is that Tadej is probably still in zone 2 at 5 watts per kg then he uses glycogen to finish off the last 10 to 15 kms. As long as he's fuelled up and is handling the heat, it's going to be very difficult for anyone to beat him
I think UAE has a great team this year, they are all very strong and give Pogacar great support. On the other hand Vingegaard has to make do without Roglic and Kuss while van Aert doesn't seem to be at his best level. We have seen him often nearly alone when Pogacar still had plenty of his team members around him. I think this is a big part of it too and I hope they can provide Vingegaard with a competitive team for the coming years.
Pog is amazing, and I wish him well. But I think Vingegaard hasn't fully recovered, and will be a force to be reckoned with. And Remco is doing so well, too.
If all Members of Visma and UAE are healthy for next years tdf then it will be a superb one. Imagine a UAR Team like this and Visma back with a completly healthy Vingegaard, Kuss and Kruiswijk.

Have we forgotten Pogi's injury last year, coming back from a broken wrist with only 6 weeks training - and how the Visma team focused on isolating Pogi and cheering when the "broke" him. He's also just won the Giro. I'm not knocking Jonas, but give Pog his due - this is a great rivalry and it's hardly Tadej's fault that he is this good.

I’m happy to call it, it is Pogs to lose, everything goes his way, a crash happens he makes it through clean, no mechanicals, plus he is just far out in front by way of fitness. You look at other rides, crashes, mechanicals or are coming back from crashes
I haven't really followed cycling much since the Lance Armstrong debacle until this year, and other than Jasper Philipson, I like all the guys. And I absolutely mean NO disrespect to anyone. But I find it so difficult to believe that these guys aren't on something they shouldn't be on. That's not to take away their talent or insanely hard work, but how could they be beating all sorts of records if they were clean?
Cycling isn't the only sport I feel this way about. When I watch Athletics, for example, and someone beats a world record by a significant amount, I worry, and feel it's just a matter of time until the truth comes out.

Maybe instead of stage wins one could look at podiums on stages. Many riders blow away Cav's numbers. Pog has a good chance to break Cav's numbers.

He had fuelling issues on the stage Vingegaard won and he was bordering on it today!, the lights were flickering in the last KM. He 'should' have won in 2022, but let his ego override his racing brain and tried to 'overboss' Jumbo. TP greatest hurdle to a Grand Tour win is himself!, he is almost incapable of not over exposing his 'balls' but who doesn't enjoy his style of racing!!? There has to be behind the scenes talks about doing the Vuelta....Now that would cement his place in cycling history as if he hasn't already. I'd let RE do the business today to try and take time on JV and wear out both during this stage and exploit them at the end for the win (if it's on the table) and at least strengthen his position even more for the TT.

It’s just compared to him he appears boring. But I don’t think anyone can hate Poggi or Jonas esp both being so good mannered off the bike. Remco is possibly not as likeable coz he comes across too cocky compared with these two

Z2 method has been criticised by Blummenfelt and Iden coach and others o several times, Z2 training is not the last coca of the desert in terms of training methodology
