Better Options for Color Vibrance

- RGB channel separation (mimicking chromatic aberration) as a cheap color enhancer is creating a low ceiling for the work of many hopeful concept artists. I'd like to suggest what I believe can be better options.

Thank god someone with a strong influence in the industry finally addressed this. I never understood the appeal of chromatic aberration. Thanks Nathan.
+Anthony Rivero It occurs under water, so really not sure why anyone would use out of that context :O
+Paul Gilbert (Rinarto) It's cool in small doses and certain situations, I just never thought it made that much of a difference to an image to warrant using it every time you finish a painting. Anders Zorn and John Singer Sargent didn't need it.
+Anthony Rivero it's like a cancer on instagram. I see many instagram artists do character designs and ruin them by using that effect.
I saw a video recently that claimed its purpose was to make the piece look more cohesive. why does he assume its to bring more vibrancy?
This is the first time I heard about the technique and didn't know it's a thing.

I'm still beginner level, but I'm super fascinated by light, and I always try to get those results that move me in other pieces
I'm struggling so hard, and seeing others working with colors so natural is quiet frustrating,
but hearing that those are actually supposed to be hard, and that many people tend to avoid the struggle coming with it, was really encouraging!
I feel like I'm not that hopeless after all, thank you very much!! :)

I believe people normally offset channels as a quick and dirty way of faking chromatic aberration rather than enhance color. (Some might use it for that but it would be the first I've heard about it) It's just another tool to make digital art echo traditionally analouge flaws, similar to using blur and/or noise.
But just like all tools and effects there is a time and place for it - and overusage is never a great idea.

Oof, I've been guilty of the layer nudge thing mentioned in the beginning. Not because I wanted extra colour, but because I thought it added a feeling of being printed and thus less computery. I'll take this on board for sure, thanks.

I've always assumed it was an attempt to bring in a retro effect reminiscent of VCR image artifacts, or something. (Probably because that's all I've ever used it for.)
I enjoyed the overall analysis of bringing vibrancy into a painting though. :)
I love the concepts you introduce here, they really do add alot of color depth that I personally had been wanting to learn. As others have mentioned though I think the layer nudge thing, a fake kind of chromatic aberration, I would never believe that this is being done to enhance color but rather just a particularly "cool" gimmick in certain situations. Granted, a gimmick that undoubtedly is being way over used at the current moment.
I truly dislike this whole RGB channel separation method, it makes me sick D:

So this is a fad now?! o.O It always reminded me of 3D images meant to be seen with 3D glasses, but otherwise really disturbing on my eyes. I can't even imagine how some people would think this useful for color vibrance. As an effect for techno-images maybe, but ti bring more color is just... what?!?! Thank you very much for explaining this Mr. Fowkes, and for giving better solutions to address this issue.

+Jason Scheier Haha... If you guys crowdfunded a movement to eradicate chromatic aberration, I would back it.
I think Chroma abberation can also be useful to get that "distorted lens" look when you're illustrating underwater sequences. But yeah, it definitely shouldnt be used on things like pirates and fantasy, just doesn't fit.
i always just thought it was a fun glitchy-like thing to do myself lol didnt even know it "fixed" rgb problems

Local colors meaning the colors already exist in the scene?
+Danny Kundzinsh "local color" meaning the color of the object itself which is best seen in diffused light. In strong direct light the local color of the object is more difficult to see, it is tinted by the light source producing strong color-shifted highlights and shadows with complementary colors.
I've been wondering why I've been seeing that effect on a lot of amateur stuff lately. It's an eyesore.

ok, but why waste 5 min of the video if you could just say it once. I'm not saying that RGB split is good or bad either. It's the execution and reason. Simply offsetting it is a pretty cheap effect and is meant to be used for emulating a screen or smth similar (The better way of doing it is of course to emulate the way how a camera does it. Radial, with more on the edge, less on the image center and full rainbow chroma, not just one channel. That btw, is used a lot in CGI and also in many high budget productions).
To sum it up: It's 100% ok if it's about emulating a certain hardware (camera, display, ...). It's not so ok if it's just to make an image look more _"colorful"_. I'm pretty sure that this was the core message from the intro, which could have been explained a bit better :^)

it sounds like you're possibly misattributing the intended purpose of chromatic abberation in the portfolios. its probably just coincidence that it appears in images lacking vibrancy, that's probably a trait commonly lacking in the kind of person who would ask you to critique their portfolios
Chromatic abberation is something photographers avoid like the plague. And yet it's used as an art form. It's become a cliche. Avoid it.
