Some thoughts on an over-used formula in concept art that weakens opportunities for hopeful artists. You can study with me further online at www.schoolism....
I LOVE You! I'm so happy I discovered your channel! Keep up the awesome work! Oh, and by the way, HUGE FAN of Dreamworks 2D animation! One of the most gorgeously beautiful movies in human history! Love the details, the flowing superb animation (holy cow, Eris's hair was hypnotising to watch!-pure perfection) , the colourful and intense backgrounds, the stories, the characters (the designs... speechless). Dreamworks wasn't just copying Disney, they were creating something unique and I really really really miss it! It hurts to know that I'll never see more movies like that, where 2D animators can truly shine with all the glory of their talents! As much as I love 3D animation, it could never blow my mind the same way a 2d animation could. Knowing every second had a minimum of 12 hand-drawn character drawings on it and so much more. I am absolutely in owe with what you and everyone in this industry has done for us. Respect! PS: I'm rewatching Sinbad tonight because of your video!
I find Gustave Dore's work a great practice. It's atmospheric and theatrical (the kind of concept art that sells), but he varies his "formula" by pushing the values and focal point around in each picture.
Great content, i love everything you says, but i just can hear the "S", please for future video use high end mic, or dont talk to close to the mic. I really love your videos, but the audio hurt my ears
hey nathan quick q, are there going to be updates on your schoolism courses(not the workouts) the workouts imo were the best classes ever put up by you, helped me so much but was just wondering if the old landscapes classes will get a update or something? I just felt like there wasnt a balance between the talks and showing how you work.
Thank you for the video and the thoughts you shared. You make some excellent points, and I can't wait to try out the tip about using the sky to help with my compositions and the mood in my work. :) Thank you!
4:40 examples against the dark fg light bg formula 5:55 mainly he’s talking about the sky bing different, things still get lighter as we go back, that’s not the problem just not the blown out sky
Very nice Nathan! Working on my first little animation short right now, so really good stuff to keep in the back of my head, not really something i have been consciously thinking about :) so thanks and keep up the fantastic work.
Man, I didn't realize environment was so purposeful in films. I won't be able unsee it now.

Hi Nathan, thanks so much for this clearly illustrated video. Appreciate your generosity in explaining this!
Yeah, the good old "you gotta learn to walk before you can run" is important, just to use a simple idiom.

Thanks for this nice reminder Nathan, will you by any chance be at CTN this year?

I wanted to see it, but your voice puts me to sleep... sorry.
I think it's a nice, clear and calm voice.. But also reminds me of Patrick Bateman
Then you actually didn't want to see it. Too bad.
