Thankfully, case law has already established that computer enhanced images are altered by the enhancement process, which is especially true of images enhanced by a basic neural network trained to upscale images, because the neural network makes educated "guesses" to upscale the image, and thus don't pass the litmus test for being acceptable as evidence... This won't stop law enforcement from using this technology to develop leads from video and photographs, but they'll need to develop other forms of evidence in order to build a case that will land a conviction...

Im one of the one who train upRGB to waifu2x, TTA mode is and legacy option not mean to be used actually, this mode procces the image 8 times rotate it 45degress each time and combine them, you shoud use "2-D ilust (upRGB model)" for things like text and logos
EDIT: Also make sure you have Nvidia cuDNN installed and cudnn64_7.dll in the waifu caffe folder, you can get it from Nvidia
EDIT2: waifu2x proces images at 2^x, that means 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x... don't use any other scale x, if you use 3x it will be a 4x downscaled

@@hime-kamisama You are using the right one for speed, UpRGB was trained whit my GTX 750ti (still in use), any other profile give you a little bit more accurate but 400% time for inapreciable changes unless you zoom in a lot, but much slower CUnet profile is broken for me, so i can't say anything about it

TTA mode is Test Time Augmentation - basically runs multiple versions of the image (flipped, slightly rotated, slightly cropped, etc) through Waifu2x, then combines the results. Ideally, using more versions of the image will make the result look better.
It's also a very helpful technique in image classification!

Pretty normal day at work for me as a developer. Actually my last job we used 32 thread machines because we have a ton of VMs, consoles, IDEs, etc open.
waifu2x is based on machine learning which means that it has been trained on anime drawings and performs best with anime.
if you want to upscale windows UI elements you would have to train it with that and then it would be able to replicate that with much better accuracy
there are multiple training modes in the desktop version, but adding a few for svg logos, blocky stuff, and windows UIs would be somewhat easy and indeed useful.

I'vee found this especially useful when trying to use a 1080p anime background on a 2k monitor and the like. the results are interesting when you are scaling a low-quality image, but when all the information is already there it's really good at just making it look a little more like it belongs on your screen, even if it's looks are essentially the same.

I would like to note that there is a more general and important issue we all need to solve - inevitable blur at non-native resolutions introduced during both display- and GPU-powered upscaling regardless of whether the scaling ratio is integer (e.g. 2.0 or 3.0) or fractional (e.g. 1.5 or 2.5).
For example, Full HD upscaled to 4K is BLURRY due to bilinear interpolation blindly applied even though it could be perfectly sharp if each signal pixel was displayed as a square group of 2×2 same-color physical pixels.
To encourage display and GPU manufacturers to finally solve the issue after 5 years of the 4K era, it’s important to make as many people aware of the issue as possible. Linus Tech Tips is probably able to cause that degree of public attention.

Tip: If you want to take a large *perfect* screenshot of anything in Windows 10 then just use Windows own scaling. Windows 10 fonts and icons are vector based so they scale perfectly to any size.
Go to Settings > System > Display > and under 'Scale and Layout' set it to 200% or whatever you want.

I've been using this for years. It's damn fine, from upgrading a pixelated/jpeg'd pictures to upscaling smaller images, it's great.
Just wanted to report back after using this tool for a while, from your recomendation in this video. I have gotten so much use out of it, specially with clients sending low-quality logos for us to use in videos. It's often quicker to run them through this tool than it is to wait for them to get the original logo (sometimes impossible with such old logos).

For the Schiit logo, I would have just used the pen tool and make my own vector image of it. It is all straight lines so it is pretty easy. For more complex images, you take your chances.

Non weebs please don't flood the sites with spam requests. One of the original project sites of waifu2x was locked/limited because an app developer from China offered an upscaler app... that used the waifu2x site's resources.
And of course the app was monetized but effectively DDOS'd the OG site. So because of that abuse, the OG waifu2x site then had to implement an annoying captcha. And I think for a time, it kept banning the whole IP ranges of China because it kept on being abused there. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
So please upscale responsibly.

if you want to process it locally (no limitations but much slower unless you have CUDA), get koroshell. It's a W2x graphic interface with dragndrop
Did u know about Topaz Gigapixel AI? It upscales images similarly to Waifu2x up to 6 times.
Its AI powered (duh).
One of the best software for enhacing I have used, a great tool for 3d artists that want to enhance their renders.
There is also Adobe Photoshop's Preserve Details 2.0, which is faster and a bit better for 2D illustrations.
(After Effects doesn't have the "2.0" version)
EDIT: PhotoZoom is very good too.
Isn't Waifu2x AI powered too? Their GitHub page suggests that it uses machine learning.

@@Schytheron Also if you use the command line/local gui version of waifu2x you have practically no limit on anything. Make 4k images 10 times large cause why not. It will start to eat your graphics card, but upscaling pixelart(64x64) by 20 times is totally doable.

Id just like to mention that this can also be used for video.I upscaled the whole first episode of yugioh by making it an image sequence in Photoshop, upscaling that folder, then putting the audio back using premiere. I made the 480p video into HD

I have been using this a lot, specifically for graphics mods, turning up the textures resolution. It is SO SATISFYING.
It took me eight minutes to realize I was watching a video by Taran from LMG. Lol, didn't realize until I saw the directory which was Fast as possible and Linus. Awesome stuff!
Imagine what others will think when you open a program called waifu2x in school.
It's been a long time but Illustrator should have it's own vectorizing tool, and there should be some very good third-party plugins available, but I can't offer any suggestions as to what the best ones are in 2019. As you showed though, each tool has it's strengths and weaknesses... but sometimes you just have to spend time working on refining the image after it's vectorized particularly for complex images with small details.
Thanks for the great information, Taran. I didn't know what Waifu2x was capable of. I just used the free online version and thought that's all it could do. Pretty great how many options it gives you.
I just want to say thank you for sharing this video. I literally learned so much on graphics manipulation as well as refined polishing to my previous workflows! I seriously took notes on this video haha. Aside from Waifu, learning After Effects' "detail preserving upscale", shareX, subpixel rendering, horizontal scaling, proper desaturation, I couldn't thank you enough!

Its a machine learning algorythm that traces anime lineart into a vector image using the gpu then rasterizes iirc
I wanted to see waifu on that PIA logo, and then run it through the vectorizer. Don't pit them against each other, get them working together ;)
this is such a great video, i genuinely learned a lot here, but there were definitely some things that were lost on me since i can tell i'm watching a native 4k monitor downscaled to fit on my 1080p screen. there were a few comparisons in the web browser where you'd show one that was supposed to look worse, but i honestly couldn't see a difference, but that's because it was already so small on my screen to being with.
Modders have been using Waifu2x to upscale game textures for a while. Its a great system
you can make it run a lot faster if you install and settup cuDNN
I think the "rendering" time is not the issue but the whole process' duration. Needs a plugin to Premiere/Photoshop.. Something similar or even waifu2x derived will probably be there at some point in the future anyway.

Hello my good sir, hoster of waifu2x.booru here. I noticed cudnn doesn't do much with time but it does lower the GPU memory usage by a estimate of 3 for my server. I been running with cudnn for a year now

It's much faster, at least from what the github says "Two-dimensional illustration (UpRGB model): A model that converts at a speed higher than or equal to that of a two-dimensional illustration (RGB model). However, since the amount of memory (VRAM) consumed is larger than that of the RGB model, adjust the division size when forcibly terminating during conversion"
You shouldn't printscreen websites at all. Rather print to PDF via Ctrl+P and raster the PDF file.
It doesn't address image quality concerns. Bad images will stay bad images because PDF does not magically create hi-res data from nothing.

I know I'm late, but combine Waifu2x with Saucenao for ultimate pics. (Saucenao beats Google reverse image search hard in the area of anime-style pictures.)
If you are attempting to archive websites, most browsers will allow you to save a copy as a zipped web archive in a nice neat package so you never have to worry about upsampling. You can use a browser to rerender at whatever size you need, optionally augmenting or replacing lower quality images that don't scale well with waifu2x versions or versions found online or otherwise hacked together as need requires.
you are correct, and that is a better/faster/smaller data method for archiving a site (though for important sites, i would still take a full page screenshot, and future browsers might not support all the page's features, thus reconstructing it improperly)
But my need is to screenshot a site for being put into a video, not to archive it.

When I was messing around with w2x, as an experiment, I extracted all the frames from a short video clip, ran them through it with 4x (it took almost the entire day using a GTX 1050ti), converted the frames back into lossless video and added back the audio.
The result was astonishing. This is the future of upscaling and that Japanese college student who created this should become rich as fuck, if he has the insight.

I can just imagine the shame a professional wanting to upscale an image would feel when they have no choice but to use a software that makes it very clear that it was specifically made for upscaling hentai.

@@awen4784 Waifus are considered hentai imo. Even if she isn't necessarily naked it's still a piece of anime being used to sexually pleasure yourself, which falls under the defenition of "hentai" in my book.
