  • The final stretch of my western road trip. I was nearly home when my car broke down and the last person I would ever expect was there to help. He ended up changing my perception on work and time and how to persevere through life.

@@TroutandCoffee Hello, by far a best 'work', did you follow up to ensure he has proper care and supports through his final time. I read in above comments he does not even have 'water' piped to the home...that is absolutely tragic that a community would not care for a elder ill person. This world of disregard by the masses is not ideal for me, thus why I then ensure to step in constantly and help those without shelter and help with i.e. their dogs when able and take bedding etc. Again I am so very saddened that a 'son' would not care for his father nor this community did not step in to help along time before you met this amazing human.

I am from Springfield just over the OH/PA line. I just uprooted my life and moved to Cleveland. But I had heard of Karl many times. When my father died and it was just my mother and I for thanksgiving. I pushed her to use the church to have a thanksgiving for all of those with little or no family. I can’t quite remember,
as I was basking in the joy of having a big dinner like I’ve always dreamed of. But I know Karl at-least got a plate. He was worried about not fitting in or being cleaned up or dressed well enough for dinner. I’ve been having a hard time dealing with my past and wasn’t looking at my hometown as positively anymore. Thank you for creating this beautiful tribute to Karl and our community. It
Gave me a much needed boost to keep fighting my own battles and change my life on 2020 as well. ❤️❤️❤️

What you also witnessed which you may not be aware of is how that man represented old school America. The days before the radicalism, the butthurt, and the know it alls. You were granted a wonderful gift spending time with that man. Im disgusted that people are so blind they cant see that man is worthy of love and help. Of course this is what happens to a people who forget GOD and no longer honor old fashioned morals. I pray the wonderful story you shared with us not only touches you but brings you a great wisdom. Thanks for this! It touched me. Im over 50 and it brought back good memories.

Karl was exactly like my dad, a blue collar who had every tool or thing you could ever need. He also had severe mental issues which caused him to appear like a disheveled hermit. He was kind and would help anyone for anything when he was sober and straight. When he passed last June from stomach cancer, I got to hear all the stories of leaky faucets and fences he built and fixed. I was truly in Awe and it made me the worlds proudest son that my father had Created a legacy better than I had ever imagined. Thanks Finn for this weeks wonderful tale. I Pray for your safe travels and Good times to come.

Very touching Kyle. My parents are both gone because of cancer ! Lets not forget its the older generation that is disappearing. They are the ones that true wisdom comes from ! No more front porch lessons or family get together during the holidays. How i could wish i could go fishing with my dad or watch my mom make a lemon pie. We must not forget what really matters in life and what our parents and grandparents taught us ! We must carry on what we have learned from them. Wishing you a very Happy Easter! and know life still goes on after death when they cross over to the other side. We must always believe and trust in God and have faith in him to get us through the hard times. Cause when our life comes to the end he is all we have !

Serendipitous. Thank you for this wonderful and artistic story, as the timing of watching this caught me by surprise. I, like Karl, live alone and am battling cancer. Today I was released from the hospital after major surgery. Dealing with cancer, living alone, in the midst of a global pandemic that turned society from social networking to social distancing, is something I couldn't have imagined. While I am also not a hermit, many close friends may fade away as we age, adding to my challenges. As your recent stories have shown, I too have been putting pen to paper, as my thoughts flow freer through the ink on the page rather than taps on a keyboard. I have many experiences to capture, but during this time i have found that being in the present and presence to those around me in recent days - especially those that I don't know - gave me such clarity and peace, that it helped calm my soul during such a strenuous chapter of my life. As you've captured so well, we are all human. Thank you, Kyle. TR.

Kyle, this video has come at a very important time for me. We are in lockdown where I live. For the first time in my adult life I have no choice but to relax.
No meetings, no sales targets, no stress.
I need to change my life. I have a wife, a baby boy called Myles and an elderly mother. If I don’t do something and look up for once I might miss it.
I need to have a job to pay the mortgage and provide but I need the stress to be gone, I honestly think it’s as bad for your health as smoking.
I want to live my life, collect experiences with my family and be able to look back in time and say I made the most of it.
This video has tipped me over the edge. 2020 is the year I change my life, I’m done with the corporate BS.
    Thank you.

Happy Father’s Day, Karl! Thank you for this, Kyle. I’m tearfully watching near Boston. You both have more to teach me and my 13 year old son than most educators and role models. We are deeply blessed by your stories and the insight into your family, friends and lifestyle. Thank you.

Karl sounds a lot like my grandfather and father. Both have an affinity to work on anything whether it be a small block Chevy or a Land Rover. They passed that onto me and I’m grateful for that. I try to help anyone I can.

Love how you spent your down time, journaling a memory on film. Great example! Here's to living Thoreau's principle : "The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run."

Kyle, a fine story and tribute to a heck of a guy. I grew up with so many guys like this. I moved off to the city to chase what I thought was important. You grow older and realize that what is important is what this guy is all about. To help a stranger willingly is a rare thing these days. Good video. Here is to 2020 being a great year for you.

I love everything you post, but this one has to be one of my favorites. It didn’t have the cabins deep in the snow-filled woods, or renovations on your cabin, but it was filled with such heart and joy you almost had me in tears. Beautiful video. Beautiful story.

That's amazing to hear Kathy! Thank you so much! One of my favorites as well. I filmed it all on my phone and didn't have that great of footage. Creating this was proof that story trumps fancy camera gear. I'm so grateful this story resonates with people!!

Hi Kyle. I really hope you will never stop making these videos. I live halfway across the globe, in my late twenties, fighting my own battles, and I just want to let you know how how you're putting my life into perspective with every little story you choose to put out there. This one really hits home and I hope one day I'll also find the strength to pursue the things I wanted most, dreams that are pushed further by my constant battle to make sure I got my bills paid. I'm so grateful for everything I have now but I will also never stop chasing those little dreams. Like you said, we're all just stories in the end. And perhaps I just want my own story to to matter in the end.
