A friend of mine traded a Nintendo switch with a scratched screen, chipped plastic on the vent and broken rails and a new 3ds with this same problem for a new 2ds xl. Im hoping to fix it so I hope this video helps.
Thank you! Thought my system was dead and I had these exact symptoms, so I rooted around on the edges of the touch screen with tweezers to clean out the gunk and it works again!
Okay so I did open it up to a LOT of dust, cleaned that off, found some animal hair across the buttons, got rid of it, and I thought everything was working fine, but something's still wrong. Still a good vid to know what I'm doing, but I'm gonna have quite a lot of issues right now.
Happened to me today too! I dropped my New 3DS XL on a carpetted surface and it didn't sound or look too bad. But specific buttons didn't work so I assumed one of the connecters got loose. Turned out the plastic bezel was a bit dented after the fall and was permanently pushing down on the touchscreen. Lifting it up with my fingernail and everything worked fine again.
Thank you for this video! I had the exact same issue only instead of the screen protector being put on improperly, a tiny piece of dirt (crumb or something) somehow got stuck underneath the screen's frame, pushing down on it. When I scraped it out, everything immediately worked again, wow. I would've never thought of that.
Wow .... it happened to me and thanks to your video I fixed it without opening up the NDS like you do. Thank you so much for doing all the hard work and finding the root cause. Sharing it to us and it saved us all the trouble. Even thinking of sending to the repair shop. Wow thanks for the video pal. 😄✌👍👍👍
the instructions were super clear! my dad tried this on mine and ended up screwing everything up. although, it did have a bunch or cracks from me dropping it, and it's almost 6 years old. i got it when i was 6 when i got it, so, i mean i was pretty reckless
Lmao 4 years later, and this video saved me. Replaced a shell on a 3ds, and because it didn't fit flush, a little peice of plastic was touching the screen. I trimmed it, and now it works lmao 🤣
once again, your videos have been tremendously helpful when it comes to taking apart my 3ds and putting it back together. my issue was circle pad drift this time and it seems to be gone ! maybe it just needed a good clean. I even have the same 3ds as in this video :3
This video helped a lot because when I was trying to take it apart to clean the a button, i took out the wide ribbon cable connecting the buttons to the motherboard and thought I broke something! Thankfully it goes back in

This is really interesting. I just tested on my own N3DSXL (no screen protector)….. pressing literally anywhere on the touch screen prevents the buttons from working.
my wife's had the exact same symptoms. it got knocked off a countertop and the digitizer broke. Either the digitizer for the screen was giving phantom inputs that were ghosting out buttons, or the digitizer has some common hardware with the buttons. this is my prediction. I'm mostly fine with zif and press fit connectors, I really dont like the tiny slide spring retention connectors used for the power button and mic in this console. Seems like they are super easy to break and the tiny amount of pressure they use coupled with their non-locking design seems like they could cause reliability issues long term.
Very intresting. Same issue with the original 3ds. The top right hand corner if you push on it just a little bit the entire layout of buttons stop workin
I have this exact 3DS and my B button recently stopped working. I ordered some small screwdrivers on Amazon and I’m currently waiting for them to come in so wish me luck that reseating the ribbon will fix it for me. 🤞
my prediction, it has something to do with the mother board it self. the C-stick usually moves the cursor on the home menu and the fact that only 2 out of the 4 letter buttons don't work, hints at a mother board malfunction. the fact that the D-pad, joystick, AND touch screen doesn't work, but the power button works just fine, indicates to me that it might be some of the pins for the ribbon cable connectors or it's the actual feeds on the mother board themselves that are the issue and some soldering shenanigan's might be at play in this video. (ik this is a 4 year old video, just lemme play along lol)
wow, after watching the full video, I just needed to clarify that I was WAAAAAYYY over thinking it. I didn't know it had a screen protector on it because most of (if not all) of the DS' that I've worked on never really had a screen protector. 'Ither way, a very interesting turn of events and I'm just happy to see one of my favorite limited editions fully working again.

At first when I bought a blue 3ds xl it had a cracked hinge and the clerk was like so what. That is why I just got another one and never went to GameStop ever again
Probably late, or someone already explained. The nub controls the camera as an alternative, the d-pad for camera in monster hunter is near unusable as an example. So that nub can be a real life saver in some games.
Thanks, it's a shame it was an upgrade on the new 3ds consoles and not there on the originals. Similar to how the psp really needed a 2nd analog nub for many games but we just had to live without it.
i tried what you said on my 3ds and yep, the buttons doesnt work when i hold the edge of the screen with something or even touch and hold it like usual, thats because the 3ds think youre touching something on the touch screen and in the video its the screen protector thats just slip a bit so it gives pressure to the touch screen like youre touch and hold it even though youre not and so you cant press the buttons (except the power button), so yeah its just because of the screen protector... at least thats what i think
I opened it up nothing look wrong and of course it had to be the screen protector because why wouldn’t it be.thanks for the help it works just fine now
It might also have been a loose connection. I took my kids screen protector off and cleaned the screen. Still not working but I don't have a small enough screwdriver, nor those fancy tweezers, so as of right now, I can't check the connections.
My SD also had some sticky stuff on it, I opened my new 3ds just to see inside. SD was sticky but i havent used the ds in 2 years plus it works fine and I kept it real safe. Weird
I wonder if it's some lubricant or something from the card reader slot mechanism that's gone tacky as it aged. I cant imagine it's from some external spill or something given how well encased the slot is.
So I have this exact same New Nintendo 3ds Max and I’m more specifically concerned about the L and R buttons. My L button works completely fine, but my R button has a tough time responding. It works when it is in certain positions, but I think I’m too young to simply understand how to take this thing apart and somehow not break it. I wasn’t able to check all of your videos to see if you’ve covered this problem before because I’m in school, but I really hope you get back to me soon.
i believe this would have something to do with water damage, as only some of the buttons work, or slim chance but maybe connectors are broken or unplugged
Thanks for your informational videos :) Today, I fixed the L and R buttons on my 3DS XL. Unfortunately afterwords playing Mario Kart 7, I just remembered that the A and B buttons (maybe X and Y too), aren't working properly. They DO work, but I have to press them a lot harder than normal. Does the rubber padding need to be cleaned? How should I fix this? Thanks again!
I recently bought a used one online and it's amazing but only the A button isnt working. Might have to crack her open and see if this ribbon cable is loose.
I doubt that you might see this but do you do repairs for subs? I just found your channel from google cuz I wanted to see if there was a way to fix my 3ds. The buttons are not responsive on the home screen besides the A button. The touch screen doesnt work. The circle pad and d pad don’t work on the home screen either. I would do it myself after watching these videos but I don’t have the tool.
It’s not a fall once you click something and you don’t let go it’s stuck on that one thing is focused on it so it is the screen protector was constantly pushing on it he didn’t want to move any other button as it would disrupt the mode for example if you were calling somebody or if somebody received a call from you when you’re talking if you hold down the hang up button it will hang up until you let go
Maybe it's my background as an embedded programmer talking, but I would get reamed if I ever programmed something to lock up and refuse other inputs if one button was held continuously. With the stuff I normally work on it could literally kill someone if I did that. That being said this is a game console and not a medical device or mission critical spacecraft so I guess it doesnt matter as much. Still weird that there isnt a timeout at least in the menus or something.
The new 2ds xl is very much a thing (infact the latest and likely last model of the ds line). Eg www.amazon.com/New-Nintendo-2DS-XL-Turquoise-Pre-installed/dp/B07GWYYHPQ
I have an issue on regular 3dsxl where only my a-button is becoming unresponsive. The very left-side of the a button and top side do not work when pressed in those areas. Otherwise, midle/right side of a-button works fine simple press but on the very left i have to press really hard for it to work. Will this fix that issue too or is that a different issue?
I have the exact same problem and symptoms. I am thinking that my screen is the problem too because before the touch screen stopped working, the screen would select whatever option was in the bottom left corner on its own. However, I have never installed a touch screen. What can I do to fix the original touch screen? (nice video by the way, it explained a lot!)
Do you have a video on how to/where you take the lower screen out? I’m no technology wiz but with guidance I think I could do it. If not, thanks for replying so quickly!
I have a video that shows the process for a dsi xl but unfortunately not for the 3ds (the process is very similar but not exactly the same in terms of screw/ribbon positions)
I accidentally got mine in the washing machine and the dryer but all buttons survived screens survived but the sensor on the bottom didnt can I get another video how to do this?
I no longer have this unit as it was a repair for a customer. What sensor are you talking about though, maybe I can point you to another repair video/tutorial.
i have/had the same problem. people were saying to use scotch tape to get the screen protector off, but it didn't work for me. though it did help a little bit the buttons do work but the dpad and circle pad activate the top left of the screen. really annoying while playing vc games which I play a lot. do you think that taking off the protector will keep this from happening?
Hi! My 3ds xl’s buttons (a,b,y,x,circle pad, arrow thing, and touch screen) stopped working while I was at the beach... I think it might have been because I flung sand around. I know I want to fix it but I would need my dad to do that
Yep sounds like sand got under the plastic bezel and is pressing the touch screen. This would be a great project for you and your dad to open it up and give it a good clean!
I loved this video, i would never though it was the screen protector hahaha. I have a problem with mine, the A button works, but its less "clicky" than the rest, i cant feel it clicking, it judt performs the action, but its like suuper sensive, id that fixable or wouldbi need to buy a new button board?
You can peel off the plastic sticker and swap the metal snap dome under the button but it'd probably be easier to replace the button board as a whole as you'd probably have to change all the metal domes with the same kind or the actuation force would feel different.
I discovered same issue by making my own protector from an universal screen protector made for tablets lol, at that moment I was scary about it but then I removed and cut accuratly so it worked perfect again xD
Gamestop doesn't repair consoles for customers, they would likely try to sell you a replacement. You can follow the instructions in this video to get it open and I think I show removing the joystick so you can do that and put the ribbon back in, lock the tab and see if that helps. If not, then like I said you may need to buy a new joystick and replace yours as it could be broken.
So I tried holding the stylus in the same spot, and recreated it on another new 3dsxl... Same behavior. Now here's even more, it only is happening when the home menu is up, in a game it doesn't do it. In the home menu software, that particular corner is for the icon resize, so the software is probably waiting for the resize request to finish. Also, it doesn't happen if the icons are at the smallest size.
I HAD two 3DS’s, my other one that looked like this was auctioned off because we couldn’t pay for our storage unit. And lucky me my other ones bottom screen and buttons stopped responding, I can only start the game in the slot, close the game and it turn on/off. I miss my galaxy one
I'd guess because the 3ds is basically at the end of its life (and the 2ds xl basically canabalized sales of new 3ds xl consoles like this one) so even a limited release would take some time for resellers to go through stock.
Is there anyway to fix the touch screen if it goes to the right? It’s kind of hard to explain but basically, if you touch anywhere on the touchscreen, it will respond by going all the way to the right. For example, if you press in the middle of the homescreen, it will just touch the arrow on the right and move the screen to the right. If you touch anywhere at the very top of the homescreen, it will click “shrink icons” or the 4 squares at the top right corner. Do you think this can be fixed by moving ribbons or do you think I need to get a new screen replacement or it’s possibly something else?
Sounds like it could need recalibration. You can find the touch screen calibration in the settings menu. If that still doesnt fix it you'll likely need to replace just the touch panel.
sjm4306 guess i have to replace the touch panel because no matter what I do, the touch screen will always go right oof. How much do you think it would cost to fix it?
Do you do paid tech repairs on 3DS systems? I’m just curious because I have a huge blob of what look like dead pixels and I don’t trust myself with trying to fix it haha
I take commissioned/repair work on a case by case basis depending on how much free time I have and the difficulty of the job. Shoot me an email at sjm4306@gmail.com with pics if you could and we can figure out what your best options are.
I changed the circle pad button on my nintendo 3ds old, I did the whole procedure right but when I turned it back on it was out of control like yours, I've tried everything and I can't fix it.
With my new 3ds xl, the a button works like normal, and It's the one I use the most (jumping in Mario games, selecting stuff, etc.), but my x button doesn't work at all, and I also used that one a bunch, b requires a very hard press, and I used it a lot (going back in menus and such), and y doesn't work at all, and it's the one I used the least, and everything else works fine and I have no screen protectors. I have not taken mine apart yet, but seeing your previous video, I would have thought my a button would have been broken by now, but it isn't. also it has been subject to small-distance drops from time to time, and it often has sweaty hands playing it. What do you think the problem is? P. S. I say used because I didn't really know what to do with a broken 3ds until I discovered that TLOZ ALTTP was on virtual console.
It could be slight misalignment of the button plastic or rubber pad from the drops or maybe sweat did seep in and got under the plastic membrane. Either way it couldn't hurt to open it and give everything a good clean, inspection and realignment if necessary.
Thanks, I will see what I can do, by the way, your videos are great! Edit: some times in the past I would try to play games, and after enough hard presses the buttons would start working to varying degrees.
@@sjm4306 I opened it, and just about everything related to the buttons was disgusting, and I cleaned it off for a good bit of time using q-tips and contact cleaner. I am tying to reconnect the ribbon but the white part confuses me due to its nub on one end. Does this nub face up, or down? (looking from the angle at which you disassembled it)
Nope this one was a friend's console who bought it broken, the screen protector must've been added by the previous owner. If yours has similar symptoms but no protector it could also be some dirt/crumbs have worked their way into a corner and are pressing the screen enough to register. Opening it up and giving the touch panel a cleaning is a good place to start.
My 3ds has an unresponsive touch screen, the a button works in the home menu and thats the only button, so i can go into a game and then all the buttons work, except the touch screen, will this help it?

i tried what you said on my 3ds and yep, the buttons doesnt work when i hold the edge of the screen with something or even touch and hold it like usual, thats because the 3ds think youre touching something on the touch screen and in the video its the screen protector thats just slip a bit so it gives pressure to the touch screen like youre touch and hold it even though youre not and so you cant press the buttons (except the power button), so yeah its just because of the screen protector... at least thats what i think
Interesting. You're very good with that.
My 3DS's directional pads aren't working, so this may be pretty helpful for me.
@@sjm4306 my guess is your guess, I kept my DS damn well safe so I would say your right

I wasn’t able to check all of your videos to see if you’ve covered this problem before because I’m in school, but I really hope you get back to me soon.
just got the new 3DS XL but what happens is you set the whole thing up and then you then see the home scren starts freezing up
That's odd, do you have an sd card inserted? If so does removing it help?
i believe this would have something to do with water damage, as only some of the buttons work, or slim chance but maybe connectors are broken or unplugged
How you fixed this?
I recently bought a used one online and it's amazing but only the A button isnt working. Might have to crack her open and see if this ribbon cable is loose.
My guess is the problem is that the system senses what you did but the connector broke.
Do you have a screen protector on the bottom screen installed?
sjm4306 no I do not. Would it help if I were to upload a video to show the issues I’m having?
Possibly, it could also be a bit of dirt or dust got wedged into a corner of the touch screen.
I asked my brother and he dropped mine (on a pillow) and now it works.
Kitty Cat no joke this worked for me
Nothing like a little "percussive maintenance" to fix things lol!
I have the same 3ds exactly like that one even the design
squidking 978 I really like that one I have the normal black 3ds XL
I have that one too
Same
@Nydorino no its the official model
I also have the galaxy design 3ds
My sister had this happen to her and she took of the screen protected and boom the touch screen worked the buttons worked
She has a 2ds xl btw
2ds xl is NOT a thing
The new 2ds xl is very much a thing (infact the latest and likely last model of the ds line). Eg www.amazon.com/New-Nintendo-2DS-XL-Turquoise-Pre-installed/dp/B07GWYYHPQ
I have that exact same 3DS XL with the galaxy style paint job on it
I have an issue on regular 3dsxl where only my a-button is becoming unresponsive.
It could be a crumb or some dust got into the corner under the bezel. It's worth a shot to take the screen out and clean everything
Do you have a video on how to/where you take the lower screen out? I’m no technology wiz but with guidance I think I could do it. If not, thanks for replying so quickly!
I have a video that shows the process for a dsi xl but unfortunately not for the 3ds (the process is very similar but not exactly the same in terms of screw/ribbon positions)
how do i predict this problem when my 5 year old n3dsxl has the SAME PROBLEM
My first thought when he said none of the buttons work is that the ribbon cable is definitely not attached right or not even attached at all.
I ment the touch screen
i have/had the same problem. people were saying to use scotch tape to get the screen protector off, but it didn't work for me. though it did help a little bit the buttons do work but the dpad and circle pad activate the top left of the screen. really annoying while playing vc games which I play a lot. do you think that taking off the protector will keep this from happening?
This would be a great project for you and your dad to open it up and give it a good clean!
sjm4306 Thanks so much! We fixed it!
if the problem was with the screen protector why did it work when he unplugged and reinserted the ribbons?
IIRC I removed the screen protector by that point
I loved this video, i would never though it was the screen protector hahaha.
I have a problem with mine, the A button works, but its less "clicky" than the rest, i cant feel it clicking, it judt performs the action, but its like suuper sensive, id that fixable or wouldbi need to buy a new button board?
You can peel off the plastic sticker and swap the metal snap dome under the button but it'd probably be easier to replace the button board as a whole as you'd probably have to change all the metal domes with the same kind or the actuation force would feel different.
@@sjm4306 oh, i get it, i saw that replacement sticker with the metal domes, i could buy the full replacement since its a lot cheaper
@@sjm4306 what screw driver do you use to take out the screws!!
I discovered same issue by making my own protector from an universal screen protector made for tablets lol, at that moment I was scary about it but then I removed and cut accuratly so it worked perfect again xD
I know this is from a year ago, but my right button my exact 3ds xl isn't working
It could be the ribbon or connector for the shoulder button is damaged or unseated. Either way opening it up and inspecting it should be useful.
Uh im wanting to know something
My 3ds it is the same model but the joystick keeps going right and im not touching it
Sounds like the connector for the joystick could stand to be reseated. If that doesnt work then it might need to be replaced.
@@sjm4306 Thanks for replying so early also how do i do that
@@sjm4306 Also if i could go to game stop do you think they could fix it for me
@@sjm4306 Hello
You said limited edition galaxy style? Ive seen those in walmart for the past year and half. If its limited why is it still out after a year?
I'd guess because the 3ds is basically at the end of its life (and the 2ds xl basically canabalized sales of new 3ds xl consoles like this one) so even a limited release would take some time for resellers to go through stock.
@@sjm4306 what screw driver did you use
A replacement touch panel is probably only $10-15, installation should be pretty easy so long are you are careful not to damage the connector.
sjm4306 alright thank you sir
At least everything else works
What tools do you use? Because I'm having difficulty trying to open mine
I did a replacement on my ABXY buttons and the ribbon cable that connects the main board and the ABXY board ripped, where could I buy a replacement?
ebay or aliexpress are probably your best bets
Do you do paid tech repairs on 3DS systems? I’m just curious because I have a huge blob of what look like dead pixels and I don’t trust myself with trying to fix it haha
I take commissioned/repair work on a case by case basis depending on how much free time I have and the difficulty of the job. Shoot me an email at sjm4306@gmail.com with pics if you could and we can figure out what your best options are.
I changed the circle pad button on my nintendo 3ds old, I did the whole procedure right but when I turned it back on it was out of control like yours, I've tried everything and I can't fix it.
99% of the time when this happens it's because the circle pad ribbon connector isn't seated properly.
I have the same 3ds expept I have Minecraft and that weird circle thing above the X button, is look button for Minecraft but it doesn’t work anymore
My guess: There's something wrong with it's flux capacitor.
(I don't know anything about technology)
Can I use your previous video as a guide for getting to the buttons on the new model? Or are they too different? (the old and new models)
(looking from the angle at which you disassembled it)
@@sjm4306 I am pretty sure I broke it, from the dents in the ribbon. Oh well.
Is there standardly a screen protector on your 3ds xl? I still can't fix it😔
Nope this one was a friend's console who bought it broken, the screen protector must've been added by the previous owner.
This problem just occurred like an hour ago and I’m gonna be so mad it’s the exact same symptoms as mine and I didn’t even do anything to it. It just started happening
What screwdriver did you use?
It baffles me how people don't take pride in their stuff..
Why do i always have an issues with screws not budging? Ffs i cant even open it
@sjm4306 If I never put a screen protector on it myself does it still have one? Do they come with screen protectors already installed??
Nope, they dont come with one installed from the factory
@@sjm4306 Good to know, but that turned out to not be my problem anyway. I just needed to clean the edges of the touch screen with a toothbrush, so simple.
Glad it was a simple fix
