I've always wondered why Dag Nasty bothered to cover this. Their version sounds no different than the Ruts. They didn't add anything to it or make it different in any way. The Ruts version is all you need.
They were great I used to hear them everywhere at punk gigs, at pubs and clubs and even back then there were tribute bands or bands with the same style were going on in the early eighties from a couple of venues across from where a close relative lived I was 7 at the time. I just couldn't stand the Damned, still can't they were far too polished for punk!!

Well said mate............ this tune passed 99.9% of the population by in it's day, just as the kickin music of today no doubt is. Cheers. -53 yerar old.
Yep best ever bands Malcolm Passed but saw them a few years ago ,, & still Brilliant .. This band has seriously been Overlooked . I love the RUTS JBXXXX

This still sounds great. Awesome powerful guitar sounds. Makes you want to go out and and get all lairy singing footballs songs pissed up, not that I would of course :-)
I have to agree with many on here, the BEST punk band I ever saw live. Newport Shropshire, the Village. One VERY naked guitarist climbing the small lighting rig! Amazing band.
Malcolm Owen (RIP) and the Ruts are the epitome of the incredible abilities that this group and others in the English punk scene (and beyond) had. In particular, The Crack was and is an absolute milestone!
Seriously though, there's great music even today, it's just not on the radio nor the TV! Don't complain about today's music being bad, just don't listen to it and search for the one that's worthy.
i saw these boys in brighton, yrs back, but if they had prevailed they would & are very special, they blew the pistols away at the 101 st johns hill, battersea, great band!
It's a very small world in the middle of a crowd The room gets dark when the music gets loud Treble cuts through' when the rhythm takes the bite But there's no room to move 'cause the floor is packed tight A voice shouts loud "We'll never surrender" A voice in the crowd "Never surrender" A hand in the crowds flying propaganda, "Never surrender, we'll never surrender" The skins in the corner are staring at the bar The rude boys are dancing to some heavy heavy ska It's getting so hot people are dripping with sweat The punks in the corner are speeding like a jet Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys A bunch of peers march in on the DM's With some standing there saluting the air They want to be pirates but the sea is not calm Tattooed crossbows on their arm A voice shouts loud "We'll never surrender" A voice in the crowd "Never surrender" Another hand fly, fly propaganda, Propaganda, propaganda The lights come alive in a blinding flash Dance floor clears as the mutants clash Everyone leaves when the heavy's arrive Someone hits the floor, someone takes a dive Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Dancing with the rude boys Staring at the rude boys Staring at the rude boys We'll never surrender
And here's the tremendous single of Staring at the Rude Boys released March 27, 1980. It was backed with Love in Vain. The 45 came in a sleeve that doubled as a fold out crossword puzzle. The first puzzle completed successfully and returned to Virgin Records won the person a night on the town with the band (and the band paid.) The second person to complete the puzzle successfully won a night with the band at his/her place with he/she paying. I want to ask you one question. Is this song f**king great, or what?
Ben Brown Jr. so glad you dig it. Yes, please, pass it on. . And if you want to hear more by the Ruts I would recommend their 3 Peel sessions posted by vibracobra23. I left comments on two of them.
This is the first time I've heard the original version, I knew the Dag Nasty version (which I probably haven't heard in over 20 years) was a cover but I never really knew or cared to hear the original. But damn, this is so much better.
This song really captured the violence and paranoiac atmosphere of many gigs at that time,i still hate and despise the people who ruined it for the real fans.
@TheAverageCanadian Yea, Henry Rollins spent about 45 mins. on one of his standup acts just talking about how much he loves these guys. He's right too! The Ruts are amazing.
Sadly I never got to see The Ruts, they did some wonderful (banging) punk classics, and this is certainly one of them. That guitar-playing is so "tight" (if you know what I mean).
15 year old mod down the local nightclub. Teen tribal warfare: will I get home in one piece? That skin girl in the corner looks nice. Talk to her, two minutes later all her mates appear. Oh fuck! Got away with a sore cheek and bruised ribs. Nexy week got the leader outside the chippy. 80s nonsense. Aw well!!!
Never surrender..my Late Dad gave me a Ruts, UK Subs tape when I was 12..great tunes.. pure energy
Your dad knew what was up, man. Both killer bands.
Good Dad put you the right track !
Yeah, I was same age. Lit me up!
One of the songs that defined my teenage years. Still listening to it all these years later.
With you all the way pal
I was 25 when the Ruts came, having been through the sparks of exciting rock n' roll since 1963, but the Ruts ignited me again and again.
More than 40 years since this was out. It still excites me every time I hear it. Classic Punk track ! ! !
Yeah, damn right!
And here's The Ruts. One of my 10 all-time favorite punk bands. This song absolutely kills!
I've always wondered why Dag Nasty bothered to cover this. Their version sounds no different than the Ruts. They didn't add anything to it or make it different in any way. The Ruts version is all you need.

First band I ever saw was The Ruts in the Summer of 79”. I was 12 years old. What an introduction to live music still love playing em.
My first live band too. Saw them at St.Andrews Hall, Norwich in November '79. I was 15...
I remember I saw Dag Nasty doing this as an encore. Bloody brilliant version too. I bought this in 1980 and still play it on a regular basis👍
57 year old grandfather from Germany. U. K. rules. There is nothing in the world better than UK Oi music. Cheers La.
It ain't oi..from England😂

@@paulopbroughton I meant punk and Oi music in general.

One of the best things I have on vinyl.
You haven't experienced punk fully until you've heard The Ruts!
Loved the Ruts , but that's nonsense .

I love this song so much!
This is the Peel session version with a few overdubs here and there.
Going to see stiff little fingers on friday night & ruts dc are supporting. Am going to have a good night!!!
0:38 I like how the drummer changes to a ska style beat when the lyrics reference the rude boys listening to ska, nice touch.
Thanks Henry.

Malcolm Owen (RIP) and the Ruts are the epitome of the incredible abilities that this group and others in the English punk scene (and beyond) had. In particular, The Crack was and is an absolute milestone!
Sad that he died so early.
So many rockstars died in 1980.

Necking vodka and bouncing listening to this before you went out....
Brilliant love it
As timeless as it gets...
@METALkid614 It was a convo I had with a friend about Rollins that led me here. Apparently Henry loves these guys.
Newcastle Mayfair 1980, fucking brilliant

Treble cuts through' when the rhythm takes the bite
But there's no room to move 'cause the floor is packed tight
A voice shouts loud
"We'll never surrender"
A voice in the crowd
"Never surrender"
A hand in the crowds flying propaganda,
"Never surrender, we'll never surrender"
The skins in the corner are staring at the bar
The rude boys are dancing to some heavy heavy ska
It's getting so hot people are dripping with sweat
The punks in the corner are speeding like a jet
Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
A bunch of peers march in on the DM's
With some standing there saluting the air
They want to be pirates but the sea is not calm
Tattooed crossbows on their arm
A voice shouts loud
"We'll never surrender"
A voice in the crowd
"Never surrender"
Another hand fly, fly propaganda,
Propaganda, propaganda
The lights come alive in a blinding flash
Dance floor clears as the mutants clash
Everyone leaves when the heavy's arrive
Someone hits the floor, someone takes a dive
Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys

Its a bunch of bm,s march in on dm,s . .a ref to british movement skins with doc martin boots.
It sounds like "Another head bound by propaganda, propaganda, propaganda" to me. The lyrics websites make mistakes.
@@exxjay Yep, that's what it sounds like. Good call. I'd totally forgotten the British Movement. Fash groups come and go all the time.
Also "the dance floor clears as the victims clash" - fashion victims maybe.
STILL FANTASTIC.
