I think they went to quality London studios however Peel got them sounding better! Virgin records was a shoddy affair until they spruced up the Manor. Even Townhouse not a Virgin stronghold made em sound like crap compared to Peels session.
A lot of the Peel sessions where so much better than the album versions. The Specials Gangsters springs to mind. I loved the Peel sessions. Malcolm Owen had such a great voice.
It's strange hearing John Peel narrating brings back memories of staying up at night listening to his show. I think John Peel should have been prime time. Good days none the less. Also John Peel was a sterling Dj who lived for the music and gave people and bands a chance.
The late great John Peel played all of the Ruts sessions completely on the show on the day of Malcolm Owen's untimely death. I've still got the cassette recording somewhere. Top quality band, top quality musicians. RIP Malcolm and of course Foxy.
I'm actually wearing a RUTS button right now on my ripped to shreds punk shirt so this post is bringing a big smile to my face. The Ruts got together in late 1977 in the West London borough of Southall and released their first single In A Rut/ H-Eyes on the small independent People Unite label in January 1979. (There are official recordings of them in 1977) Their charismatic singer Malcolm Owen died from a heroin overdose in July 1980. He had been battling addiction for some time, as the song H-Eyes revealed. His death was a major tragedy in British music and many punks remember the day as if it were yesterday. In their short existence the Ruts created some of the greatest punk music ever. Man, these guys could play!! Tremendous musicianship, wonderful, soaring songs and Owen's vibrant, heartfelt singing. This is the last of three Peel sessions by the band and arguably their best. I challenge anyone to show me a superior run of four punk songs--anywhere. The album that collects their three Peel sessions is one of my 10 favorite punk albums and the Ruts are one of my 10 favorite punk bands. Really don't see how you can get much better in the world of British punk.
Thanks for adding me! I see you have awesome taste in music. Feel free to check out my vids (I am a beginner guitar player) and all music in my liked videos, I have a very diverse love for all genres of music, but I love Brutal Death metal, all rock and Classic Rock. Cheers!
The quality of the recording is amazing considering it was 1980. Fantastic musicians and extremely tight. As a band they were in a class of their own. I wished I had seen them live.
I've always liked this band and from back in the day but listening to their stuff now; it seems like a very polished and progressive sound from the harder punk sound of 1977. And you can tell they were really good musicians!
You'd never hear this on an eightees night. At the time thousands of us teens were all into this music. Try putting it on Facebook and get a like out of it now even some our age. Most people had and always will have crap taste!
Foxy's off the beat chords on the first verse part of Demolition Tango (always thought it shoulda been called that!) is simply genius and unique in punk...no other punk band has ever done this !!!
thanks for posting this and other sessions. Love the ruts and ruts dc. Thanks Rob Mcmillan (hope I spelt your name right) for introducing me to the ruts and other great music.
I saw Ruts DC, beer gut pension plan and punk is dead. If you see a band completely sober, then forget it within hours, just listen to the Malcolm Owen recording or watch the video. I'm not wearing a Ruts button badge and the 'ripped to shreds' style is boring now. Thanks for the history lesson willieluncheonette, much appreciated.
You don't have to be a punk to love this band, I'm not this band is really something else AAA+ love em 😊 Next up for me Gang Of Four and Blitz back catalogue 😁
Quel dommage!
All three of their sessions were released on LP by Strange Fruit in 1990. You can still get copies of it at www.discogs.com/release/4289265-The-Ruts-The-Peel-Sessions-Album or there's a CD comp at www.discogs.com/release/7801349-The-Ruts-The-Virgin-Years
what John Peel did for music is invaluable
Never a true word said pal he was a cut above the rest.
What the artist's did for him...
What a quality band they were.
R.I.P. Malcom and Foxy.
Much missed by many.
The BBC engineers did them proud here.
Yep Some of these Peel Sessions sound effing amazing. Really , really good. Excellent craftsmen.
Better than the single.
@@fulcrumspigot455 Agree 👍

Yeah great sound, Wonderful stuff.
Is this not the best version of In a Rut EVER?! Hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention. Stupendous.
oh yeah-so true!
Without doubt the best version I have heard of this song.
Better than the album version (I especially didnt like the robotic vocal - it didn't work for me.) This has so much more atmosphere.
A lot of the Peel sessions where so much better than the album versions. The Specials Gangsters springs to mind. I loved the Peel sessions. Malcolm Owen had such a great voice.
The peel version of savage circle is also better than the original.
These guys should have been huge ! Great muscians , great songs !!!
"In a rut"
for me the best punk song ever.
How we miss John Peel, Malcolm, Foxy etc
One of the Best punk bands
It's strange hearing John Peel narrating brings back memories of staying up at night listening to his show. I think John Peel should have been prime time. Good days none the less. Also John Peel was a sterling Dj who lived for the music and gave people and bands a chance.
he was too good for prime time.i also remember staying up for his shows which were amazing!
He was great until he started playing bliddy rap.
Always went to bed early, no worries Peel is on.
One of the greatest Rock bands ever... Malcolm RIP, babylon still is burning
The late great John Peel played all of the Ruts sessions completely on the show on the day of Malcolm Owen's untimely death. I've still got the cassette recording somewhere. Top quality band, top quality musicians. RIP Malcolm and of course Foxy.

Music that's so good IT gets even better with TimE
The quality of the recording is amazing considering it was 1980. Fantastic musicians and extremely tight. As a band they were in a class of their own. I wished I had seen them live.

In a Rut;you cant argue with that bass.
I've always liked this band and from back in the day but listening to their stuff now; it seems like a very polished and progressive sound from the harder punk sound of 1977. And you can tell they were really good musicians!
Great band....aggression and power
You'd never hear this on an eightees night. At the time thousands of us teens were all into this music. Try putting it on Facebook and get a like out of it now even some our age. Most people had and always will have crap taste!
