    Exactly. You need to keep your insulin level low throughout the day. If one cannot, it simply means their pancreas is inefficient and they have a metabolic disorder. Just like a car, if you constantly need to refill your stomach every mile it simply means your gas tank has holes.

    So Milos Sarcev's insulin protocol of taking 10+ IU of insulin pre-workout and then having intra workout shake of carbs and EAAs is not a good idea at all according to Dr. Bikman?? The thing is Milos gets guys pretty jacked with that protocol

    Can someone answer this .....if I am weight training pretty hard throughout the week, about 195 lbs, 6'2, what should my carbs be at....do I need them only after my workout ? I cant seem to get rid of lower belly fat at all... why is it good to spike insulin after the workout ? But have levels low any other time

    • @traingear9578
      @traingear9578 6 років тому

      mustseebg, if your goal is to burn body fat then there is NO need to spike insulin after a workout (thats only for guys trying to gain mass or increase performance). so simply go NO carbs at all and up your protein and fats

    Love Ben's work and enjoy his podcasts he does. But 41:24 , I disagree 100% Wish it were otherwise. I function well with Keto. But always gain strength and mass when I add carbs. When I leave keto, even if I go fairly low carb, I gain strength and mass. The guys on YT doing Keto and Carnivore are all on gear or TRT. Again, I wish it were otherwise.

    • @METAL__MECHANIC
      @METAL__MECHANIC 6 років тому

      Shawn 71 far from true. You can absolutely gain strength and muscle on #keto without gear. Most educated keto UA-camrs will still say that carbs are still probably necessary for high level athletes to be optimal. Mark Bell says it all the time. The truth is not enough athletes have tested themselves on keto to really know, but endurance athletes are thriving on it.

    • @a.schnitzer9325

      Seems like everyone is different Here.

    • @Shawn-hs8qk
      @Shawn-hs8qk 6 років тому +1

      not talking about endurance athletes hear(goes without saying). Strictly strength and size. Without Gear or TRT someone will always be flatter and weaker without carbs and will easily hit a plateau. The guys on YT making gains on Keto are all on stuff.

    • @Shawn-hs8qk
      @Shawn-hs8qk 6 років тому

      We're talking optimal gains or even respectable gains for natural lifters.

    • @METAL__MECHANIC
      @METAL__MECHANIC 6 років тому +3

      Shawn 71 just because you don't think it can be done does not mean they are all on gear. That is a very naive and narrowminded statement.

    The problem with low carb diets when you're insulin resistant is that you aren't controlling your insulin. What you're controlling is your blood sugar. Low carb diets increase insulin resistance at worse and at best it remains the same (if you're very lucky and depending how long you've been insulin resistant). And that means whatever carbs and protein you do eat will require two to five times more insulin to process those macros than if you weren't insulin resistant. Look at the older guys on UA-cam who are low carbers and have been that way for a couple of decades. The first time they eat some carbs their blood sugar skyrockets out of sight. They haven't CURED their insulin resistance. The goal should be to cure you insulin resistance so that the amount of insulin you need to control the amount of carbs and protein you're eating is just the amount required and no more. Excess insulin over time will do as much damage to your body as high blood sugar. Fix the problem, don't just mask it.

    • @Blobiverse
      @Blobiverse 5 років тому +2

      Michael, there's no such thing as "curing insulin resistance". Insulin resistance will happen any time you consistently flood your body with insulin. How do you 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 it? Simple, lower the consistency at which you produce insulin. What do you think happens to a heavy alcoholic when they stop drinking for days, 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 alcohol resistance? That's nuts.
      If you have research that shows 𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁 does not improve insulin resistance over, say, an obese diabetes patient, you are welcome to present it.
      People on Keto diet have demonstrably lower insulin levels, consistently. My final question for you is what you think is the difference between 𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘣 and 𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘤. One is nothing like the other.

      I heard a phrase that Ben Bikman mentioned is carb intolerance instead of insulin resistance when someone who is low carb eats some carbs and glucose skyrocket.

  • @zeroxox777
    @zeroxox777 5 років тому

    Bikman, I'm afraid you are just wrong in your thinking about the fact that you can't gain body fat on a ketogenic diet, and relatedly that people who are on keto but gain belly fat aren't watching their carbs. I have been sticking to around 20g/day carbs from the beginning; I am extraordinarily strict - it took me 2 months before I was prepared to put a couple of cherry tomatoes in my salad. I weight train daily and do allot of cycling and walking. Yet I gained fat and especially a little pad of subcutaneous fat on my belly. I was eating minimal protein considering I lift weights, but because of bulletproof coffees and eating to satiety I ate allot of fat. Other possible factors include a previous very high protein, fairly low fat and fairly low carb diet. You go figure. It is definitely possible to put on fat on a keto diet. There's a youtube demonstration of a guy who ate something like 5,ooo kcal per day keto and although his protein was a little higher than usual (something you think doesn't matter), his carbs were ultralow and he gained significant subcutaneous fat. Go figure. You must have something stinking in your thinking.

      Ben Bikman is a scientist, he can only make general statements based on research findings. Making specific recommendations for an individual is the domain of a physician, which he is not. Bikman always recommends each individual should experiment with his own diet to discover what will work best for his unique body & fit with his lifestyle & goals.
      It looks like you've been working on that already.
      Good luck!

      presjo Thats kinda hard to support actually. Furthermore, one of the major benefits of eating lower carb is that it controls hunger better, so a calorie matched environment eliminates one of the more significant advantages of the diet.
