Hi The Templin Institute can you do other DreamWorks series factions please and Disney series please can you do factions in Disney please I hope you have a good day and you guys are awesome
Surprised how you didn’t at least write how the ruins of DuLoc are still a frightening place for Fairy Tale creatures.
The fact this was narrated in a serious tone is the ultimate expression of comedy
I love every second of it
This is a serious video after all 😂
I miss the old narrator's voice, myself.
To a 13 year old.
I concur
From Warhammer, to Fallout. And now the grand lore of Shrek.
Next, the kingdom of far far away.
It was either this, or the Sith Empire from Legends. I made my choice and I stand by it.
@@TemplinInstitute Damn, would have loved to have seen the legends Sith Empire. I will wait patiently.
I do support the choice of backing track though.
@@TemplinInstitute we'll still see that Sith Empire video though right? As much as I love a Shrek video, would still love to see that lol.
@@TemplinInstitute Wise. Duloc would crush the sith with their mere existence.
Real out-of-left-field expedition here!
In the end, Farquaad was no celestial being. For only shooting stars break the mould, and the only thing he broke was the camel's back.

Funnily enough was thinking exactly this while watching the video, specially those stupid "cleavage armor"
The armor in the anime gate do look rather realistic as well heck even the women got full plate armor
@@Groza_Dallocort gate was overall one of the most "realistic" animes to this day! shame they all take soooo damn long to release seasons -.-
@@mho... From the way they ended the first season, I get the feeling they know they aren't getting another one. Damn shame, I liked the show. The manga's good too, though you have to remember the biases of the author involved.
@@Groza_Dallocort If the armor doesn't cover your body especially chest, it's not armor. its a "please stab me in this convenient boob window" suit
The fact the narrator takes the Shrek story in that serious tone this channel is legendary for just makes this much more wonderful! Bravo to all who did this little treat!
You should see the episode for the Planet Express company from Futurama
Reading that first sentence gave me a stroke.
I find this even funnier considering the in universe narrative for the Templin Institute is it’s this multiversal organization, like an actual school/research group. Which makes me imagine someone in a position of authority, for whatever reason felt like they needed to dedicate ressources to examine Duloc, and we are seeing the results of said research in the form of a very serious presentation, presumably being given to group of very confused members.
Yeah I’ll be surprised if the narrator didn’t burst out in laughter after doing this video
I may be making a video for my channel over-analyzing shriek, about how it’s a criticism of eminent domain.
If anyone ever needed this video, well it now exist.
Thank god
This comment really comments on the state of a video
Of all the comments I've ever read, this is one of them
I needed it

That starting quote... "The rule of Lord Farquaad might therefore be charactized by a fervent desire to live UP to this words, only to come up SHORT." Dude.
And ending quoting the legendary poem, "All Star".
That quote is perfect. Like Duloc.
and "At its HEIGHT...."
You could say men of Farquaad's caliber are in SHORT SUPPLY.
The fact that the Templin institute not only decided to cover Shrek, but also play a rendition of all star in the background is a testament to how much they truly love cinema and video games as well as their fans. I applaud you good sirs and ladies. The years do be coming, and don't stop coming
No matter the world, there is always something worth taking far too seriously.

Is it me or did you too read it as a song in your head?
Glad to see the Templin Institute is finally covering some serious topics. I hope we will eventually see videos covering the Kingdom of Zamunda and the legendary Fort Kickass.
i doubt even the Templin Institutes authority would be recognized in Fort Kickass!
Would be nice to get a templin video on the state of Amestris. (Fullmetal Alchemist Manga) no point going from the perspective of anything but the original story though.
They need to cover the legendary Zamunda-Wakanda War.
The Siege of Ram Ranch wass a pretty big turning point for an alternate universe
add the republic of wadiya to the list
I always loved how the Shrek films had some really dry satire and references in them that really played to my sense of humour, I can still watch them now and find a new reference, meaning, or slick bit of writing
I did not realize I needed an orchestral version of All Star till now.
Glad you enjoyed my orchestration of it!
Mate i loved this version
Farquaad may have had a kingdom, but he didn't break the mold. Only shooting stars like Shrek can do just that...
Farquaad and Castle Duloc may have fallen, but Shrek's journey was just getting started.
After all, in this world, The Prince isn't charming, The Princess isn't sleeping, The Sidekick isn't helping, and The Ogre is the true hero. Here's to you, Shrek!
Like the wisdom of the ages says "It's a cool place and they say it gets colder, you're bundled up now but wait 'til you get older"
Lord Mark "E" Farqaad's demise was his hubris, oblivious to the fact that it was infact getting colder and him older
now I want a full song
@@miguelpadeiro762 True. The villains greatest weakness will always be his own hubris. His own age mixed with his narcissim proved to be his undoing. That and being someone trying desperately to get that Happily Ever After...
In the world of Shrek, however, the story doesn't end with a Happily Ever After for the usual fairy tales. That doesn't mean, of course, that love was only true in those fairy tales.
@@Kingcole6 Shrek saw her face, became a believer, when Farqaad would hide it and put his finger and his thumb in a shape of an L on her forehead, denying her to live free and as her true self

Fuck...everytime I stumble upon Shrek memes I realize how the movie is unironically incredible with its story
This feels almost like the history teacher I had in high school coming in, hung over, and just deciding to talk about this one country he knows way too much about but it never amounted to anything.

Hi everyone! I’m the orchestrator of this All Star cover. Sending a wave everyone’s way!
Only shooting stars break the mold.
The writers clearly did in depth research when establishing the basis of Duloc, Lord Farquad seems to be based on the real historical figure Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy. Charles was the ruler of a powerful duchy but was killed because of his arrogance and expansionism leading to his team's collapse and the end of the male line of his dynasty. The way Shrek so clearly portrays the failings of megalomaniacal rulers and the impact they have on their realms really sets of apart.
"Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
~Lord Farquaad
Edit: the smash mouth bit and rendition song is too awesome 😎👌

The flat delivery of Shrek's plot with the upbeat, cheerful string arrangement of All Star is amazingly juxtaposed.
1:15-“Do you think maybe he’s compensating for something?”
ALRIGHT I GET IT
My favourite sci fi faction, Shrek
don't you mean fantasy faction?!
Damn you Templin for inspiring me to think further on this subject. I can't help it.
Just how effective a ruler really was Farquad? Was he a shameless tyrant who cared for no one but himself? Certainly. But was he actually integral in maintaining a relatively thriving and orderly kingdom? Is it possible? As phoney and image engineered as his holdings might have been, it's not an easy task to construct and maintain such a settlement. No slums or poor district, clean and perfectly maintained, every citizen at least looks relatively healthy and provided for. There's undoubtedly a strong element of oppression going on behind the scenes, with the poor or unsightly likely being disposed of rather than uplifted, but it's still highly abnormal to see a tyrannical reign that is actually capable of perfectly hiding it's dissent and grimy underbelly.
It comes at the expense of the non human and magical minorities, but normally scapegoat tactics are employed to cover for failings rather than in the wake of aggressive expansion. The abundance of high quality masonry and metal work within his settlement and retinue show that Farquad commanded plenty capable industries. And the ability to condense so much human labour into building that monolithic castle, can only be accomplished with surplus agricultural capacity. They have time and manpower to spare for the planting of non essential luxury crops such as Sunflowers. The entire town is painted in blue, with exceptionally vibrant blue dyed wall hangings, one of the most difficult and expensive dyes to cultivate.
One possible explanation might be that the settlement we see in the movie is just the privileged centre of his domain, that prosperity is siphoned into whilst the rest of the kingdom rots. But even with that explanation, and whether put on for show, it remains impressive the level of prosperity he manages to maintain. The fact that his death led not just to a new figure simply replacing his reign, but to the rapid and total collapse of his kingdom, even to the point of the land itself seeming to die and wither with him, raises even further serious questions.
Was Shrek actually the bad guy in this story? Was Farquad, a Mufasa analogue? Holding back the darkness from overtaking his realm?
( And once again, curse you Templin. I have better things I should be spending my mental energy on.)
The area surrounding his castle was likely forced into his idea of perfection, and was no longer able to naturally support life, requiring imports from the fringes of his lands and colonies in order to sustain it. With him gone and his rule collapsed, no one was left to administer the land and it all died. Basically the fairytale version of Arizona if humanity ever disappeared.
If I were to guess, I would suggest that Farquaad maintained a perfect image at the expense of Duloc's industry and production. Nations typically don't need a scapegoat unless there's actually a problem to be blamed on them. Its entirely possible that there simply wasn't any gold left in the treasury, and anyone in a position to take command opted to flee rather than fix that mess.
You could say... That all the glitter is gone.
I suspect he toke large loans and mismanaged the econemy, which he then blamed on the fairy tale creatures.
it's one of those constant themes in history. a ruler-or maybe even generations of rulers-have cultivated a stable base of resources, all for an ambitious heir to use to reach for the stars. they can and do succeed (just look at Mansa Musa's capability to crush economies with charity, or Louis XIV's countless efforts to make France the cultural hegemon it is to this day) yet they can only succeed using a system that their heirs cannot possibly keep together for long (the Mali empire fell apart soon after Mansa Musa's death, the French upper class's preoccupation with its high culture eventually led to the French Revolution)

Shrek was one of my favorite movies in my childhood. Factions I would like to see next:
1. The Locust Horde | Gears of War
2. The Kingdom of the Land of Far Far Away | Shrek
3. House Harkonnen | Dune
4. The Tau Empire | Warhammer 40K
5. House Tully of Riverrun | Game of Thrones
How about the city of verdansk in Kastovia or the island of Caldera
I love how we have the tau and the land of far far away on the same list.
The medieval vision of ALL-STAR is a very nice touch.👍😉
Rest easy my friends, for today is a day that will live in infamy forever…
Thank you for this.
Oh my fragging Terra, this was utterly horrible and absolutely amazing! Horrible because it was so short! Amazing because the Nostalgia for the best Shrek Movie there ever was and some follow up footage I didn't know about showing what happened to Duloc put shivers down my spine! Fragging loved this! Finally they are covering factions that matter, Brotherhood of Steel? Imperium of Man? The First Order? Just a bunch of insignificant states compared to Lord Farquad and his great kingdom, the greatest of all time.
My god. The background music is all star. And the last line was perfect
Oh my fucking god.
Just... mad respect to the narrator, i wonder how many attempts it took to go through all that with such a serious, stone-faced tone. Just wow.
An interesting note: as the only landowner that we know of other than Lord Farquad, Shrek likely had the strongest claim to the throne of Duloc after Farquad's death. He was also wed to the princess of Far Far Away, and briefly served as its monarch. So, technically speaking, Shrek was King of two different kingdoms. He ultimately abandoned both to live a simple life, leaving Far Far Away in the care of his wife's cousin Arthur, and abandoning Duloc to decay and ruin.
holy shit the all star remix in the background
The severity of the tone coupled with the levity of the subject is a wonderful contrast. Delightful!
Either that beer last night's still kicking or I'm really seeing Templin doing Shrek lore now.
This was very much needed for this channel. A video on a far off land that doesn't take itself seriously, but narrates as if it is a part of a long standing lore. I especially loved the play on words for Lord Farquaad's stature and his ability to over play his size to extreme measures for his ego. Well done.
"Only to fall short"
That was low.
Also made me realize how much Duloc had in common with Witcher land.
Thank you for this video 🙏
I love that, on the way out of Duloc when the city was abandoned, someone stopped off to modify the mural of Farquaad in the courtyard to a skull with missing teeth so that if someone should ever return, it would be clear from an aerial view that this place is a ruin.
The lore starts coming, and it don't stop coming. It takes skill to present humor in a serious manner. Well done.
I love how it ends with a all stars line.
You guys never fail to inform and amuse me.
As someone who’s going to be doing a Shrek Jr. play this absolutely pertains to me. Thank you.
I almost spat out my drink when the background music started. Love you Eric!
Love you too Zerxees!
Aaahh Childhood memories... Unspoiled.
Totally loved the last line, I wasn't expecting it at all!
That All-Star background music is just perfection! :D
What makes this better for me is the cover of “all star” in the background, on another note I will say if you didn’t know what this was a cover then it’s still pretty enjoyable
"my name is Lord Farquaad, King of Kings. Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair." Nothing else remains.
I hope the institute dives deep into this new universe. There are many strange locations and bizarre characters to see, like the Kingdom of Far Far Away.
I think one of the Institute's less experienced field researchers may have taken a bad turn and decided to extract what value they could out of it.

Now this Lore that i'm interestated
There serious tone of the narration and weight of the script combine so perfectly with the hilarity of the music and the joke that is Shrek. The perfect Templin video
Oh, good heavens it's great you do episodes on places and worlds no one would ever expect to be taken seriously.
Hilarious and detailed as it should be
Wow! I love Shrek. This narrator with a serious tone makes it more fun.
A detail I’ve noticed is that in the great cathedral of Duloc, the stained glass windows depict Farquad and noble heraldry that corresponds to Farquad’s knights. This implies that Duloc’s very faith revolves around reverence of the noble class
Never thought I'd see a Templin Institute video examining Shrek, but I'm glad I did.
Please do Far far away next.
Having never seen Shrek but knowing the characters it was an amazing moment the first time I heard "Lord Farquad" in this video.
No joke, but I'd totally forgotten the name of this state until I saw your video 😅
I still remember when I saw each of the movies in theaters!
About 30 seconds in, it dawned on me what the background music was, and pleasantly enjoyed that for the rest of the video.
Then the narrator dropped his final line, and I almost busted a gut.
I've always found kingdoms of anti-magic people in fantasy settings to be fascinating, like trying to fight reality itself for daring to impose whimsy on you.
I knew I was in for a treat, but that orchestral cover of All Star, had me laughing from the start! 😂
We've had great lores and tales, such as the Antares confederacy and the re-envisioned war between the First Order and the Republic
But this...
This...
This is TI's zenith
This feels like an out-of-season april fool's video. Not that I'm complaining _at all_
I wanna see Shrek lore expanded on more in the future
Oh my god, the soundtrack and the final line...magnificent.
The ending line will go down in history as the best line in history.
"Imagine that's the closing lines for a speech after the whole world unites".
Yo! The Shrek lore just dropped!
I did not see this coming lmao
probably because the king is so short😂
That orchestral score is fantastic. Great vid!
This video had many layers of information to it, and that's exactly what we needed.
Finally a great lore we all can love
Several years ago, I visited Universal Studios California theme park and they had a multi-dimensional experience which took place between the first and second Shrek films. In it, both Shrek and Fiona are traveling to their honeymoon but who would show up to become a third wheel? Yup, the ghost of Lord Farquaad. This time, he’s trying to kill Fiona so he can marry her ghost and become king of the underworld. Don’t know if the show is still there but it’s a funny little anecdote
Kind of wished you’d put more context into shrek’s character. I mean by the 4th film he has become a beloved celebrity in universe.
A model that amazes;
A plan with 7 phases!
Things are looking up here in Duloc!
The background music is such a fantastic touch
And this is the kind of content that's had me watch every video you guys have made since 2017. Love y'all work lmao
One of the best investigations you've done!!
I've been waiting for someone to delve into Duloc's lore.
Farquaad believed all that glitters was gold. But failed to realize that only shooting stars break the mold.
Bruh, I died when he said "The years start coming, and they don't stop coming" in his serious narrator voice.
Loved all the small jokes about Farquad through the video
Not the lore video we wanted, but definitely the lore video we needed
What I like most is that a rendition of "All Star" is played in the background.
It's outrageous that universities teach courses on Ancient Rome, but Maximus Farquaad's legacy apparently isn't good enough to be taught!
I appreciate that you used a music still related to Shrek instead the usual non-related music when you explain other nations or organizations
I can imagine the agent who was tasked in the world of shrek saw the castle and said something along these lines.
"Looks like someone's compensating for something."
This is the lore I truly needed. Thank you, absolutely lifechanging.
I had always wondered what happened to Duloc after his death. I'm actually surprised the city was abandoned and was just never taken over by the citizens
Perfection truly one of the greatest videos ever made
