Woodturning a Log Bowl - Forest to Finished!

  • This oak tree fell down in a windstorm and gets transformed into a beautiful bowl. This oak bowl is turned green, microwaved, and then finished with mineral oil.
    Check out my website adirondackiron.com/ for available products! (USA only)
    My method is to microwave on high for 2 minutes and then let it cool for 2. I keep doing that until it stops loosing weight and no longer has a 'moist heat' feel to it. The wood should loose at least 30-35% of it weight during the process. The bowl should be left out for a day or two before finishing. I'll make a video about it eventually. Beware if you do it too much the microwave can actually char the bowl.
    The most important factors to keep the bowl from cracking are a uniform wall thickness and no pithy center wood.

    WOW! Beautiful! I've wondered IF you could turn a "Green Log" or had to wait until its dry. Well, you just showed me you can. Thank you. I've only JUST gotten into watching woodturning over the last few months. Just incredible to watch the transformation.

      Thank you, Sam, glad you enjoyed it! Green turning has two big advantages, its everywhere and it cuts easier on the lathe. There are other ways to dry green wood, but the microwave is the fastest and gives instant results. I hate the thought of a bowl air drying for 3 months and then finally cracking.

    Awesome project and great job!! A couple of questions though: shouldn't you dry out wood before, like, in natural conditions, instead of microwave? Does it give you the good result and prevents the bowl from being chopped and getting cracks and so on?
    Another question, how do the NY state troopers like the duct tape on your plates? :)
    Keep it up!

    • @AdirondackIron
      @AdirondackIron  4 роки тому +1

      Natural condition are probably better, if you have patience lol.
      I'm about 80% successful with the microwaving, the other 20% become firewood. Thankfully I remembers the tape before I hit the road. Good luck with your channel! You need to get yourself a forge!
