      That was surely intentional. Most people would think of the word "air" before they would think of "heir", and would not associate the word "son" with a story about young women, so they would default to "sun". Sun & air also are both associated with nature, the outdoors, & life, so it's natural to pair them in one's mind. Without knowing the entire song, I suspect a play on words in those lines.

    Most of us too young to know the original song when season 1 aired in the 90's just heard "Sun" and "Air". It sounded like a reference to nature and magic, and didn't leave us with reason to question the choice of song.

    Nah, they chose it because it was a catchy song from The Craft. The full lyric is "I am the son, and the heir, of a shyness that is criminal vulgar" it has nothing to do with the show. In all honesty, they might have chosen it because they thought the lyrics were "I am the sun and the air" and it sounded witchy

    • @zaynes5094
      @zaynes5094 5 місяців тому +1

      @BelleShadow I agree. It is definitely a 'pull you into the story" kinda intro. It is a great hook to get the audience into what they're trying to sell.
      Add to that the beginning imagery of the intro itself also helps to add that extra dimension of "oh okay we're dealing with witches".
      The original song is actually about ones sexuality and denial and delaying the inner truth that one going through that kind of struggle, self-identifying and finding the one that feels right for the individual, might go through. Specifically the singer's experience going to a club with a gay friend, when he was not yet out, and feeling isolated and awkward and not at all comfortable.
      I think there is also actually a certain level of bisexuality found within the song as pertained to the witches in the show. Now, none of them have any of those leanings and all lean toward men, but there is a certain aura around witches in history and fantasy fiction where I do get that feeling of bisexuality or lesbianism where female witches are associated with in fiction. Probably due to the similarities between men's fear of women's power being like "They must be a witch if they seek power greater than their own station."

    Best theme song ever and I adore how you pointed out how having their witchcraft stripped for many years was a disadvantage in terms of losing Prue etc. I never made the connection between how a mortal/witch would act in scenarios.
    Fabulous breakdown. My only thing with ‘Forever Charmed’ is Prue not returning. It was a letdown Shannen turned it down BUT I respect her wishes.

    • @manicmediadream
      @manicmediadream  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much! I lowkey always blamed Grams for binding their powers at a young age because Prue was always a strong witch and would have done even more incredible things had she had more practice with her powers. But I also realize that everything happens for a reason in universe and in regards to behind the scenes issues on the show.
      Omg I was also so sad to not see Shannen in Forever Charmed! I kept hoping with all the time traveling we were seeing that she’d make an appearance, but given the circumstances of her exit and her respect for Prue’s character, it made sense for her to want to pass. I’m just glad we have the comics which might not be to everyone’s tastes, but they give us everything that show couldn’t do due to its bts disagreements and budget limits.

      Piper also could have blown Shax up. I don't know if she could have frozen him, since sometimes that power didn't work, or not for long on upper level demons. And I know that that wouldn't have killed him but could have injured him long enough for Prue to save the doctor and maybe make Shax retreat, buying the sisters enough time for Phoebe and Leo to return.

    Good analysis. This show has my favorite theme song ever. For me, I think it's less about the lyrics and more about the haunting witchy vocalization in the beginning and the instrumentals. I also love the editing: each clip shows the sister's powers, and each transition goes to the next sister (Prue, then clip with Prue with Piper, then Piper, then clip with Piper with Phoebe, and then Phoebe). Plus each transition has the Book of Shadows font flicking in the background.

    As time as gone on, I have started to realize the role that Prue played was less the sister, and more the mother figure to the other Charmed ones, as evident by a LOT of her episodes revolving around her responsibilities and taking care of her sisters but in a motherly role more times than I can recount. And considering she idolized her mother and always felt she lost without her growing up - I kinda see her dying in the battle in S3 finale as being that role full circle. Sure, a lot of times she worked with her sisters but she had a LOT of independence and a lot of wanting to do things her own way that I feel ended up being a detriment to the character later down the line. I liked her character when I first watched the show back in the 90s, but rewatching it, she's my least favorite (Piper is my fav) and I really liked how likeable Paige was in general. I loved the later seasons, expect for the Billy Season, that season was crap ngl

    • @marquet1025
      @marquet1025 7 місяців тому +2

      It is interesting they lose all their mother figures in the show (their real mom, their grandmother, and their sister) piper does take up the mantle and is the oldest but she’s never as motherly to her sisters as prue was then she becomes a mother to her own children. I’m sure in part it’s because she never had to be for Pheobe and Paige was already independent once they meet her. That’s why I felt their dynamic worked better with Paige than with prue. Like they all seem like sisters but you can tell piper is the oldest and is the glue for the family we see pheobe take a leap forward in her own growth and Paige matures but in the younger sibling way. Like prue was independent but in a way that she was trying to support her sisters at the expense of herself. I don’t think that was ever the intention of her character but it’s one of the rare times it works for everyone’s progression because there’s no way we would have gotten piper becoming the most assertive sister or pheobe having to take someone else’s mistakes and guide them

  • @tf9241

    I find it interesting that I always heard it as the following
    I am the Sun, I am the air.
    I am here and I need to be loved
    Just like anybody else does
    See I’ve already waited to grow/too long
    And all my hope is through.
    Idk how I heard some of the lines just straight up wrong. Though I heard both of the 4th line weirdly enough.
    But I love your analysis.
    Just to explain my warped version of the theme song I remember,
    the Sun and air were very nature related and connection with basically an ancient power which their powers do come through. Wicca, from what I understand is very much a nature based religion compared to others. Why I thought it was ‘I am here’ was because sometimes as women, it is easy to be overlooked and sometimes pushed aside by the patriarchy. The statement of ‘I am here’ just says yeah I exist, you can’t overlook me forever. Added with ‘and I need to be loved, just like anybody else does’, just grounds the humanity of the Halliwells. Just because they are witches, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t human and their humanity was something to be pushed aside. And pretty much my understanding of ‘see I’ve already waited too long, and all my hope is through’ it sorta falls in line with their overall views of their witch responsibilities especially by the end of the series. They haven’t had the chance to really be human because they are protecting the world from evil. It comes out in Paige’s search for her calling and with Phoebe trying desperately to find the one she truly loves after so much heartbreak. Piper has sorta found her calling but not quite until she’s finally able to open her restaurant.
    I also used to sometimes hear the line ‘see I’ve already waited too long’ as ‘see I’ve already waited to grow’ and that would imply their limitations in their abilities at times. Phoebe especially with her primary power being her premonitions. Until she received levitation, she had to train to be able to fight back which she needed unlike Prue and Piper. It did feel at times throughout the show that they were wanting to progress their magic more but there were limitations put on them. Especially S1-4, they want to know more about what they can do, their limitations and how they could grow their power more to be able to defeat greater threats, especially when it came to something like facing the Source. They wanted to be able to be ready but they also had some self doubt that they weren’t.
    Idk that’s just what I took from my incorrect interpretation of the theme song. Very brief considering how much I could really go into it.
    Edit: forgot to mention that when I really was able to understand the show was after it aired and my family had it on DVD. I was watching it almost obsessively in 2014 right in the middle of my high school years. Watched all 8 seasons 7 times over and I did that math, i spent waaaaaay too much time watching Charmed. So a lot of angsty teenager feelings within my interpretation of the song as well. I did watch it occasionally with my mum when it was originally airing but being a child back then, I remember it being darker than what it was.

    6:35 that is so astute. Never thought of that before. We saw baby Prue in S1 using her power freely and instinctively. No way would that girl grow up to not use her power in danger rather than act like a mortal.

    Phoebe only got the power of levitation because it was an earlier form of flight which if you remember the first genie episode they got to keep their wishes consequence free. Phoebe would’ve never gotten an active power maybe except for blitzing because of her empathy.
    But this also made me think about Piper’s breakdown because if you think about it, Prue was her best friend. They will go to summer camp without each other. Prue was Piper’s best friend at her reunion. They went off to college together and moved into an apartment together. They spent their whole lives together. Of course Prue had friends because she was a cheerleader in a valley girl but I honestly honestly wish they would’ve portrayed Piper a little better. Instead of making her a nerd or dork, they should’ve just gone off of her being a good girl next-door, which is not edgy for the 90s. Which would explain why she didn’t have very many boyfriends because they wanted girls who put out like Phoebe or girls with an edge like or even the loner rebel Paige. And I could just imagine Piper being so pretty to the point that other girls don’t want to hang out with her because they feel less pretty by comparison. That also made me think about how none of them really had friends because they invented friends for Piper when she had the baby shower, which they never spoke about before then or even the reunion episode. I wish we would’ve got to see Prue’s reunion as well as Paige’s
    Also I hated the lack of interaction between Paige and Victor. They should have shown him being the bigger person and embracing her after the loss of his eldest daughter and ex wife. This was a missed opportunity. They both needed what the other could have provided.
    They chose this them song because of the Craft. Which it’s was suppose to be a spinoff of.
