Thank you. With some pattern you might adjust a how many per row. For example work 2 in the side of all the DC rows for 5 rows, then only work 1 in the side of the next row because you noticed that it was getting a little wavy. But that is hard to write into a pattern. This we design a pattern for a very specific and complex border.

It can be tricky. Some patterns just say to crochet evenly across the edge and that is fine, but make sure to pay attention to how many single crochet they want to to place on each side.
I am going to try this for a rug that I made for a friend and one for the mat for my cat's new carrier (which she hates) I did an experimental one and I was pleased with the outcome. I also have a rug that I made that I will remove what I've done, and do it more professional that what I did.

Evelyn Oxner yes half double crochet is a bit tricky. Here is the really tricky part, what if you have an odd number of half double crochet rows? I guess there is no wrong answer.

You are welcome. This formula works pretty well, on occasion you may need to add or skip a stitch if you see if getting wavy but it does work for most projects.
Excellent video thanks. I was struggling to get a ‘finished’ edge. The edge was straight but just needed more. I used this technique and then added your extended hdc and I love the result. Much appreciated. 😀

Hi..thank you so much for this tutorial def helped me a lot since I'm a beginner , my question is for the single crochet row for the bottom part when you say single crochet to the other side are you just putting the hook through the back yarn n not grabbing both yarn ..hope I make sense..thank you
Yes and no. It really depends on how you working into the chain to begin with. If you worked into one side of the chain then you would probably be just going the back yarn. I tend to work into the back bumps of my chain so the bottom of my first row looks the same as the top of my stitches. SO I have to go under two strands of yarn when going through the opposite side of the chain. But this is only because of how I work into the chain. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful. The only thing that threw me was at the end when you were finishing the border you said to SC into the first stitch, but it looks like you slip stitched into the first SC?
You can use a slip stitch or a single crochet. If you use a single crochet then when you start the next row you will be in the middle of the corner. If you use a slip stitch you will be starting the row on the side of the corner.
Makes sense, I mostly do amigurumi using a slip stitch. Just was confused on the border when I saw you do a slip but say SC lol thanks for clarifying!
Thank you for this tutorial. It was very helpful, an I hope you can help me. I am working on a project that repeats “one row half double crochet and three rows slip stitch”. How many single crochets would you do along the side of that repeating set?
Oh that is tricky. I would try working 2 single crochet per 3 rows of slip stitch, and see if it puckers. So work a single crochet into the first row of slip stitches then skip the second slip stitch row then work another in the last slip stitch row. Try that for a few repeats and see if it gets wavy at all. If it does then I would remove a single crochet and work 1 Single crochet for the 3 rows of slip stitch. I hope this helps.

Great Video! I am a beginner and have made blankets before without edging it. I recently put a lot of time and effort into a blanket & want to finish it off neatly. It alternates single and half double on each row. Any suggestions on how to make it work?
it is a little trickly but here is what should work. For every 2 hdc rows and 2 sc rows you will work a total of 5 single crochets along the side. So first HDC row will have 2 SC into the side of it, then the following SC, HDC, SC row will all have 1 single crochet into the side. Then repeat the process.
If the single crochet border is the very last row, then you can also just work 1 SC into the side of every row but work loosely. Working loosely will make the stitches slightly bigger and would give you the extra width that you need to be able to make the border without all the counting.

With a half double crochet, you need to work 3 single crochets over the side of 2 rows. So 1 Single crochet into the side of the first row and 2 single crochet into the side of the second row, then repeat until you reach the corner. I will look into making a video.

Just a question. You said, at the very end, to single crochet into your very first single crochet, but it looks like you slip stitched into that first single to end the border. Is it truly a single crochet to end it or a slip stitch? Thank you for your tutorials.
I imagine I meant a slip stitch. Sometimes people will Ch2 in each corner and then on the last corner the will CH1 and then single crochet in the first stitch. This will make your next row start in the center of the corner. So both ways do work but I believe I meant to say slip stitch.

The colors tend to look darker on camera. It sometimes makes choosing a color hard.
how did you make the two loops at the beginning when you were starting the border? im so confused. (and it was the two loops with the blue yarn, when you put the grey yarn in those two loops)
I believe I was just changing yarn colors. So I was just working the very last single crochet of the last row and used the grey yarn for the last yarn over of that single crochet.

That is a tricky stitch. I looked at a chart for it and I see those end stitches consist of single crochets and double crochet (or a chain that acts as a double crochet). So I would try working 2 SC into the side of each double crochet and 1 SC (single crochet) into the side of the single crochets and see if that lays flat.

How do you do corners for the half double crochet stitch? I've been watching this video repeatedly, but I still don't understand how to do the border for the half double crochet stitch. I do a stacked single stitch for the turning chain, instead of two stitches, but I'm still having difficulty doing the border.
For a half double crochet you can chain 2 when turning the corner.

It would work the same, but you would chain 2 in the corners.
Hello ... I wonder if you could guide me in telling me how to extend a too short top by crochetting a piece at least 12 inches longer . Do I follow a scarf video. I was going to mark dots on my top, and single crochet into them and then maybe double crochet around and around but not sure how to end each row. thanks you if you can help
The dots and crocheting around will work. When you end the row you will slip stitch to the first stitch of the row. Then you can chain up and start the next row. If you are using double crochet then I would Chain 2 and then work your next row of double crochet.

You can. I would only do it if you use the same color as the base of the cardigan. IT would make sewing the pieces together easier.

How would you go about this on a treble stitch? I can’t find anything online about it!
I have heard to use 3 single crochet per treble stitch row, but it is something I would have to try to make sure that it doesn't become to many stitches. Some patterns will also say to single crochet evenly down the side of a row and just add more stitches when you think they are needed.
How many DC would you work into a stripe that has two rows of HHDC?
I would try 3. I find the herringbon stitches lean a little and make them just a bit shorter than a normal stitch but I don't think they are as short as a single crochet. So I would try 3 stitches per 2 rows and see if it looks right. if it looks wobbly then I would alternate working 2 stitches per 2 rows and 3 stitches per 2 rows to see if that evens it out.
I know this doesn’t exactly deal with the video, but I have a question that I have searched EVERYWHERE for but for the life of me, I can’t find anything even resembling an answer.
So I’ve been toying with different stitch patterns to make some cute mud rugs or dish clothes, and I’ve been *trying* to do one row of single crochets, next row hdc, next sc, next hdc, repeat. I do not add or drop any stitches, but it alllllways seems to narrow. Is it because one is thicker in width than another? I just have no idea and I’ve been trying to solve this for years lol 😬 😠 Help pleaseeee!
It is possible that the HDC is a little wider than the SC, but if you are alternating rows that should fix it. Have you counted your stitches to make sure you are not loosing stitches? A lot of people tend to miss the first or last stitch of a row and need to mark them with a stich marker to keep it straight. Another thought is that for some reason you start to crochet tighter later in the project.
How do you do this on a waffle stitch?

Isn't the last stitch a slip stitch and not a single crochet? I am following along with this video and the one you have for a camel stitch border. Great videos but I am just a little confused.
You should be slip stitching to the first stitch.
So are you crocheting into the corner, chaining two, then crocheting into the corner again? It looks like that's what you did for your third corner. The other two it looked like you crocheted into the corner, chained 2, then moved onto the next stitch.
So right now our projects doesn't actually have a cover space. We are creating corner spaces with the CH2. So I am crocheting into the top of the last stitch then CH2, and turn to crochet into the side of the stitch. (It will be reversed when you hit the next corner.)
I am making a booty. I have 18 rows and the instructions says to do20 sc evenly along the edge. How do I do that?
You will have to work 1 sc into the side of 16 rows and 2 sc into the side of two rows. I would spread out the spots where you put 2 sc.
Is the double crochet in U.S. Or UK terms?

I'm still confused on how to do this. I've been trying for the last 45 minutes to get it right. My border ends up wavy because there's to many stitches in it. What bar are you talking about? There are visible ""holes"" in the border when I do 2 singles down the side.
Are you working the 2 single crochets into double crochet rows? Are you working into half double crochet rows? I show how to work into the side of 3 different stitches so I need a little more information.

You are correct. I got tongue tied. I did a slip stitch, now if you were to CH 1 and single crochet to the first stitch then the single would lay side ways and when you started the next row you would be working in the middle of the corner.
