I wouldn't say it's encouraging but more how it would work realistically in its perfection. The original commenter I surmise meant usual trash anime with dysfunctional harems, where there is no harmony between the girls and mc unlike Mushoku Tensei where the author wrote the character dynamics so perfectly with each other and realistic where you would just be at peace and tap into nirvana every time they interact. I read the light novel so everything I said is basis on light novel version of Mushoku Tensei, anime might not have captured its beauty.

Mushoku Tensei means a lot to me. I've been a borderline shutin for years due to mental health problems. Now I'm about to start community college and I'm learning how to drive, which I've always been too scared to do (I got my permit a couple weeks ago!). When I was too scared to go outside, sometimes I'd play the opening song of the first part of season 2 and I'd feel braver and more hopeful.

I've been trying to explain to people since season 1, that Rudy gets better, but not as some kind of redemption story. It's fundamentally a coming-of-age story, it's just that Rudy's character has an extra 20 years of trauma, bad habits, and mistakes. He doesn't stop being a perv, everyone still subtly thinks he's a perv, but he matures and picks up responsibilities, so all of the perverted stuff increasingly takes a back seat as the story progresses.
They only look at his perverted side but never mentioned how dilligent he is. He wakes up & immediately train Saitama style EVERY SINGLE DAMN DAY! He also probably spend more time for reading book than average people... He didn't get the harem, He earns it!

This show is a warning, people are more and more ease to lock themself off, mostly men, and that don't make any good for mental heathy, end up like Rudeus, close to criminal, or in suic1d* statistic. He always had the potencial to become a good men, but got stuck. Those people need help, and more will to get in their own feet. I'm living with my parents, they support me. And I'm grateful every day. I need more willpower to become a proper adult and control my on life. Last year of my degree now, and I'm scared of not getting a job. But I need to face it. people have very weird misunderstanding on how change work and how improving oneself work, it not instant process that happen like snap of the finger or just flip the switch and done thing, it a slow process that you move little by little. If you paid close attention, you can actually spot Rudy change little by little through out the series: - Rudy was at peak with his pervertness at the start, still carrying around his old sense of value before being isekai along with all his other bad trait. - At first, Rudy was still being selfish a lot, only think of himself and only think of other on how they will benefit him. Overtime he start to genuinely care for other around him like how Rudy try save the family when Paul cheating got found out by trying to understand from all side and come to solution that might led to happy end - Then 3 year tutor with Eris, who actually punish Rudy for his pervert behavior from time to time. During that time Rudy start learning more social interaction as you can see how well known he was within the city after a few years, which is something he need to actively do to gain that reputation. And by teaching Eris and Ghislaine he gain various exp and learn how think in more perspective, more creative and way to simplify thing - Transportation disaster happen, Rudy take on more responsibility and protect Eris while trying to make it back home. In this phase, you can still see Rudy still have his pervertness but he slowly control himself on multiple occasion, even at the end of it with Eris sex, Rudy was gonna try to decline at first but after understand how Eris is feeling, he give in. Unlike previously where he left pervert on rampage, at this point he already start thinking about it more before doing anything and control himself. - The whole college arc with Slyphy already been cover in video but i also want to again point out that Rudy was continuously thinking for other people in this arc and try thinking in that person perspective as well, something that the old selfish Rudy wouldn't do - Then the whole Roxy and Rudy cheating, yes i admit cheating is wrong but Rudy was at his lowest and Roxy was also taking advantage of him as well but what make Rudy a better person is how he act after it and we even have the perfect example to compare, which Paul and Lilia: + Paul was at the peak of his life but he still cheat and both Paul and Lilia keep it hidden until they got busted, from every way you view it Paul was 100% wrong from the start to end, wrong in how he handle it. + Rudy at lowest point, father died, mother vegetation state, mentally broken down, blaming himself continuously and even more when he think he have to bring the new to Norn who love Paul so much, everything crushing him. Rudy couldn't get out of it by himself so Roxy intervene and in that moment of weakness, Rudy made the mistake but it also save him and drag him out of it. => Here come the good part, what did Rudy decide to do after it? Rudy man up and take responsibility, he and Roxy both knew they were wrong so they head home and tell Slyphy the truth, not running away or hiding it like Paul did, he come home to Slyphy to Confess, to ask for Forgiveness then Permission, if Slyphy said no, he and Roxy would end it there as both knew they were wrong.Yes cheating is wrong but the way Rudy deal with it was more mature than whatever Paul ever did or anyone else would The journey of Rudy in MT is about him living his second life to the fullest, improving himself but not changing into a completely different char, at the end of day Rudy is still Rudy but he become a better man over the series, from pervert NEET to a true family man
Most animes over cover a small chapter of someone's life but this covers many chapters of a person's life. Going over many character flaws and flaws in other characters. One of the things in this anime is that despite their flaws they can still be good. Paul cheated on his wife and while someone people in the real world might label that person a scumbag for life but he was ultimately redeemed and more than redeemed by the end. Rudy is no different. Despite having living a whole another lifetime he felt he was somehow superior to everyone around him. That he could just toy with people and while intellectually he was learning and getting smarter his stunted growth as person was all the more apparent and had gotten in his way multiple times sometimes tragic. Only now has he finally come to the realization that he is not so superior that he originally believed and that what he had learned in his previous life really amounts to next to nothing. Completely forgot to mention that Sylphie is the best girl. Roxy is OK but to be honest she feels like a lesser version of Sylphie.

At that moment we only saw a scumbag that cheated on his pregnant wife and a moment later we learned that he actually raped Lilia a long time ago. I feel like the roxy situation could have been handled better but I also think rudy being polyamarous both fits him as a person and leaves room for complex conversations about relationships that people treat as black and white. I don't love that sylphie was waiting for it to happen but I also don't think rudy is a bad person for having room in his heart to love more than one person deeply.
To be honest, there is no better way to honor Paul's legacy than to take on another wife. That being said, it is also interesting to compare the two. Paul cheated on his wife in their own home, and intended to keep that secret until it no longer could be kept. Meanwhile, Rudy cheated on his wife while half the world away, in a time of emotional turmoil, and decided to just come out and be honest with his wife about it, instead of keeping it a secret. As for Sylphie, expecting such a thing kinda makes sense when you consider the different environments she lived in. After Rudy got shipped off, she spent a lot of time visiting their home, a mostly stable house where Rudy's dad had two wives. Afterwards, she spent time with Luke and Ariel, who were both phenomenally perverted themselves, and would go on at lengths about the reputation of the Greyrat bloodline for being notorious womanizers.

Id say what roxy did was an act with good intentioned but also just aligned with her desires. Now if it turned out poorly and rudeus got worse after it her intentions wouldn't matter.
The reason why this is such a good redemption and forgiveness story is because it doesn't gloss over just how hard redemption and forgiveness actually are and how often we miss the mark even when we try what we think is our best to not make any more mistakes.

The pitch of the original story was "fantasy world, but my main character is a piece of shit" The big thing i find frustrating is one of the larger themes of this series is conflicting moral views. Like its at play with norn being millis and none of the other mains. and is still a problem for rudy towards the end of the series where he's carrying his morals from earth (despite abandoning them when on earth) resulting in a rudy have a problem with something that none of the other characters understand... though, that plot did get stricken from the web novel after controversy of people not getting that theme

I agree with most of what you've layed out. I went from S1 to manga and straight to LN so a lot of things I was hoping S2 would show got cut out. Him reflecting while trying to help Norm had much more of an impact due to lenght it was drawn out. And that length of time plays a huge part in the scene I feel. The thing with Roxy, yeah its annoying he cheated but his depression in the LN just felt so much heavier. A long 3 weeks after they got out of the dungeon. Heavily depressed, not eating or talking to anyone. Everyone was desperate to help him out and Roxy had the best intentions at the start. But with Elinalise pushing for it, a drunk Roxy took advantage of a vulnerable Rudy. I think the LN did a better job at showing how awful they felt when they realized what they did. Thinking Roxy is pregnant, Rudy does step up and take responsibility for his actions, and Roxy was willing to disappear after apologizing to Sylphy. It just feels very real. To be honest, I was really surprised by how quickly the dungeon act happened. I feel that all of the emotions the LN drawn out for the readers to really feel the impact of everything was too important to cut out. But I understand not many people would watch an anime if it was too slow.

I think the show missed a point from the light novels that makes things more awkward, it doesn't really show us that well how screwed up Roxy got after being lost a month in the dungeon and just when she had given up and waited to die, Rudy saves her in the last second. They are both badly F:d up when they sleep with each other. The novels also have chapters from the perspective of Roxy, Eris and Sarah that gives us their feelings and tell us why they act the way they do so we do miss a bit of the story when they only focus on Rudy even if he is the protagonist-kun.
@@hmmm..668 I think it is lessons to apply to the third season, I know they wont go and edit the already done episodes... They should make an Eris episode pretty early in season 3, going back to the morning she decided to leave and telling us about her story in her sword school.

Rudeus never grew up in his original world. He was in adolescence when his classmates bullied him into depression. His growth stunted since then. In the Six-faced world, Rudeus was given a chance to grow up again and accept things in his own pace.
Hey, good video, a bit of a long explanation on some stuff the anime skipped (from the web novels): The problem is the anime did a horrifyingly terrible job at explaining what happened with Roxy and why she did what she did to save Rudeous. They don't show you how Rudy literally loses his shit again, day after day for weeks waking up in bed, constantly reflecting in Paul and his parents and family in his past world, believing he wasn't good enough and he left his family be destroyed once again by his lack of capacity to overcome a situation, running his head throught it, blocked in place till exhaustion, then he'd collapse sleeping, wake up from nightmares and repeat... But yeah, unfortunately when you cover 2 seasons in 1, things aren't covered. I don't appreciate how we don't see even a quarter or Rudy's relationships with each and every secundary character, you see a glimpse of it, and some important parts, but its not just that. If you check the anime and see 20 situations worth of notice (character bonding / development) the reality would be closer to 60, people trust him and he learns to trust people and be there for them cause he wants to be good for the family he choses (that being the people around him / friends). Unfortunately a very mediocre adaptation at best, Roxie's dungeon time was crucial on explaining what happened, it should have been atleast 1 entire episode of her trying to scrap by, managing his magic mana regeneration while escaping through portals from room to room, often in the brink of collapse due to hunger and physical / mental exhaustion, while always barely surviving long enough to randomly get teleported to the same initial (and extremely claustrophobic) dungeon room. After all, Rudy finds her in her last attempt at trying to escape from that inicial room that didn't have any monster spawns where she used to rest / sleep and count the attempts at escaping. She knew she was going to die, and she made her mind up at trying that last time even if she had to die to monsters instead of waiting for her life to run out while lying on the floor, she didn't want to give up at any minimal chance there might be at surviving. But ofc, its very important to show 3 minutes of that context at most, not talk about her struggles almost at all, barely imply the depth of the situation and the crudeness of it, and instead show how she wets herself out of fear when she's about to die. Idk, you tell me, everytime i think about the adaptation I consider it worse and worse. It was a 7 initially, now I'm debating saying its a 6, might even be a 5.5/10. I'd wish it had been twice as good, and thats a problem if I ask for that, cause I rate things really highly tipically (to me a 10 is not that hard to get). Hope anyone found this interesting and reads the novels, either web or light ones. I haven't read the light ones, I know some things change, all I can say is I personally liked the web novels a lot.
Sylph is a goddess who was abused because of her green hair. She is aware that no one else will except her like Rudy so she sets her sights on marrying him early. Then when he goes off to teach she thinks of how their life will be. Knowing Rudy as she does & excepting his two mothers, as normal in this world, so she's fully expecting to have to share. She doesn't want Aerial to move in as she thinks she would be booted out by her. As ling as the other wives are equal to her she's OK. Roxy falls fir Rudy at 5 bit knows she needs to let him grow up that's why she tells him "Say that to me again in five years." Eris teaches him to respect women or get beat up. She also knows when he gets serious in a fight she's no match for him and that he let her fight while he protected her. Even when he wanted to fight monsters.
She didn't love him when he was 5. The whole "say that to me again in x years" or "say that to me again when you're x years old" is something people say to sidestep the topic with kids. It's a noncommittal answer that allows you to end that topic for now, without dealing with potential emotional fallout from turning them down right then.
@@JayceCH. Some of the word choice makes it rather exaggerated, but outside of the Roxy part that's pretty much correct based on the story. Sylphie was bullied, and later saved by Rudy, although I don't believe her feelings really grew to the point of love until some time after the mana disaster. She also was very understandable about him having multiple wives having known both him and his father, although she had some people she wouldn't ever be fine with him marrying like the princess or Nanahoshi. Basically their comment isn't far off from the actual story, and the difference seems to mostly just be interpreting what was written a bit differently for some parts.
I enjoyed almost every part of Mushoku Tensei, but this made me drop the show. Honestly I can't even explain why. I've watched and loved harem anime before, but this just rubbed me the wrong way. (Maybe it's because I love Sylphie lmao)

I think this is the first time I felt genuinely uncomfortable watching something. It just felt so disappointing to watch Rudy fumble and betray Sylphie. I’m not against polygamy, do what you want aslong as you don’t harm anyone, it was just the fact Sylphie wanted him to remain faithful and he didn’t, that’s what irks me.
when i watched Mushoku Tensei i thought is anything rudy does really that bad and after 10 seconds of thought yes but i noticed everything rudy does is everything i think to do then go thats a terrible idea
The thing that got to me was the multi wives thing. I know I know, its in the manga. The aspect that I disliked was that Sylphie has such low self esteem that she already expected him to cheat/sleep around. She didnt want to loose Rudy so badly she just accepted it. It felt like the show reinforced her low self esteem by not having Rudy have any repercussions for cheating.
I think you overthink that scene a little to much, for Silphy the whole having multiple wifes situations its not really bad, again she is not a millis believer so polygamy is completely ok.
I love how you instantly character caricaturized Sylphie as having low self esteem when EVERY character moment we've seen of her says otherwise, and Sylphie straight up spells it out that she always expected it.
The second half of season 2 was so good, I immediately went out and read the rest of the light novels. I can't wait for season 3 and beyond. And hopefully the author keeps writing side stories or from another characters' pov.
Here's how the ending could have been fixed. TL;DR, I know that this was probably how this was written in the LN, but this season could've used an extra episode. First, Sylphy doesn't forgive rudeus right away. I feel like the climactic end to the last season was just better in every aspect. With rudeus having an episode to reflect on what happened and had time to process everything. I wish Sylphy did something similar where she's, mad at rudeus for cheating. Then wonders if it's her fault. And then she realizes that even though rudeus did cheat, he still came back and had the decency to tell her. This in a way would mirror rudeus progression where he first blames eris for leaving, then himself, and then realizes that he still has so much to live for between finding his mom and sylphy, plus all the family he did find. Second, rudeus wouldn't ask to take roxy as a second bride first but admits to cheating. It bothers me that rudeus comes home to his wife and just to say "I want a second wife". And what norn says about how sylphy was constantly thinking about rudeus while he was gone hits hard. So instead of starting with "I want another wife" he should've started with admitting that he cheated and then begged for forgiveness. And instead of saying how rough he had it when norn yells at him he just takes it. Sylphy would then go on her emotional arc I described earlier and then rudeus and sylphy would talk about what happened, why it happened, and what to do next.
I love the story but rudy's antics and decision is definitely making it hard for me to enjoy it. I even stopped watching halfway through season 2 part 1. Fortunately I push myself to watch part 2 and it reminds me why I love this series so much. It is definitely a masterclass in the isekai genre
I know the context was a bit different but sylphie was already suggesting rudy getting a concubine if she couldn’t have kids, the same episode they got married 💀
You are so real for the struggles of recommending Mushoku Tensei. The "but" is always such a difficult hurdle to cross. So I just start with the warning. Its a masterpiece that isn't for everyone.

season 1 rudy was thinking of this new world as an escape, he barely thinks about his past life or his demeanors, as long as he does better in this life, he'll live happy, he thought Season 2 rudy was forced to face himself and his past, making him realize he NEED to make right what he's done wrong in the past, or he's doomed to repeat it Season 3 forwards will be rudy trying his best to live in this new world, but with the kinks in his character mostly ironed out, and a new family to protect
Just a thought, but if Rudeus wasn't a reincarnated old and pervy man and was just a kid growing up in a fantasy world with a bit of a perverted side, they'd probably still think he's trash but who is also a kid growing up and experiencing things. The problem is that no one can see that Rudeus is a kid growing up in a fantasy world. He was given the perverted memories of his old life. In every other isekai where the MC is reborn in another world, Rimuru another pervert is reborn as a slime but it is less real as it tends to cover up all of that with him being a slime and a leader of a country. Even though a slime, he is seemingly only a few years old though is not made a big deal. Rudeus is more of a real character as he is burdened with the memories of his past life. It's rated as a top isekai for it's world and attention to detail. The fact that people would expect Rudeus to have been a changed individual in the first season shows how much that even when in a fantasy world, they're stuck in another. This would make every other reincarnated character fake and hiding the true darkness from their past life under wraps. While I'd probably say that one's past life shouldn't matter, memories will still effect a person and change will be difficult. Rudeus had something that in this life, he wanted to do. Could have remained a recluse even from the start. He could have done nothing. Without the man god or anyone telling him, he grew passionate about magic. Despite that including other things, Rudeus had chosen to take steps forward. He took the steps to leave home and would later take the steps to respect other people. This world becomes his real world while still fantasy to us. No more could he be a degenerate as everything would start to matter. He gains deep respect for Sylphy and strives to do what's best towards her. Rudeus is not the man he was. that man died a sad and pitiful life if not a degenerate. Even while Rudeus converses in that form with the man god, he thinks less and less like how he used to and it's more of his form of dread and fear of what may occur down the road. Rudeus is the main character of the universe, he just happened to get the memories of his past life. If he was just an unredeemable pervert, he would've never have been isekaied as he would have only cared about himself. Instead, he put his life in front of the classic isekai truck without knowing what might come next. The show does not say to kill yourself to receive a second chance nor does it condem being awful and it will turn out right. It shows how while staying a recluse might be easy, it's better to get out there. That people can change when the choose to put in a little effort. You just need to take a little outside the gate you put around yourself and face reality. While some might like other scenes of the anime, more powerful scenes, I still loved it when Rudeus who became parinoid of leaving home because of trauma in his past life's memories as it was when Rudeus took the first step to not being who he was, but towards being Rudeus Greyrat.
The fact that there are still tourists watching this show, Coping every season with "this time Rudy will grow" in a situation where he CLEARLY is written as a flawed character and WILL NEVER, let me repeat that, NEVER, change his base instincst even if he manages to grow and better manage them for the people he loves. The fact that people are trying to deflect the "evil" of the last episodes to Roxy to cope that Rudy is different are due for a rude awakening for the next 2 seasons. Without spoiling much, you guys think Rudy is bad now? Sweet summer child, the things that await you. I hope that this shows continues to filter tourists as usual, an honest masterpiece from season 1, even child rudy was great and he remains top tier protagonist to the end of the novel for sure.

Cheating with Roxy is pretty much the last time he makes a mistake of that variety.

After finishing season 2, I genuinely just feel bad for people who think this show is just Pedo shit. This show is such a masterpiece. I wish I could erase my memories and watch it again. I never cried so often for an anime. Even tho its mainly because I really identify with Rudeus.
If I have to say one thing, people forget or don't understand about the great impact of characters on one another in this show. Rudeus has great impact on his wives and their character development and they also have great impact on him, for example Roxy. It plays an important role in this story.
You know what. Yeah. Sure. I'll give this anime another chance. I dropped it after that episode where Rudy and the other girl got kidnapped and he tried to use the situation as a way to humble her even though he had absolutely no control over it. I swear, the audacity of that literal man-child to not use powers he could have used before she got beat up and then swooping in to save them had me so disgusted. Then the gall of him to lecture her as if he knew any better? Made me drop it mid-episode. I might be getting some details wrong, but the absolute disdain I remember feeling in that moment was so visceral that I still hold onto them this day. His degenerate behavior sure didn't help. But yeah. Maybe I'll give the anime another shot to see how on earth it got greenlit for three whole seasons.
I honestly agree and I think this anime is really good but it’s just not really for me only because when I’m looking for an anime to watch or manga to read I’m mostly doing it as an escape from my current life struggles so I don’t have much interest in something that emulates the uglier parts of real life but In a fantasy setting. I get that some people can't get into the show because of how uncomfortable it can be....but if you can get past that part, you'll understand why the story is written the way it is and why it contains the imagery it does. I just wish people who can't get into it would just leave it at that though.
I will NEVER understand people saying Mushoku Tensei is bad because Rudy is bad (in the beginning). And it's not because he gets better. Why the _fuck_ can you say a show is bad just because one of the characters is an ass? Like, am I fucking tripping right now? How is that a valid opinion to hold? You can say that you are personally not interested in a story with a flawed character. You may then go back to watching exclusively Mary Sues and their male equivalents. But don't you fucking dare enjoy a single anime/show/movie-in the history of forever-that is rated higher than 8. Because those are bound to have decent writing, meaning they should have an interesting protagonist at the very least.
I don't think Mushoku Tensei is bad because of Rudeus being the pedo scumbag he is (having a deeply flawed MC is not a problem by itself). The real problem is how Mushoku Tensei frame those flaws and especially the interactions with young girls/women in a show that is supposed to be about personal growth. Many shows depict much more violent content: for example Vinland Saga has murder, pillaging, rapes, slavery, AOT has its MC carry some crazy shit as well and let's not forget Death Note who had one of the most psychopathic narcissist MC ever made into anime yet neither of those face nearly as much backslash as Mushoku Tensei.

I wouldn't say it's encouraging but more how it would work realistically in its perfection.

Mushoku Tensei means a lot to me. I've been a borderline shutin for years due to mental health problems. Now I'm about to start community college and I'm learning how to drive, which I've always been too scared to do (I got my permit a couple weeks ago!). When I was too scared to go outside, sometimes I'd play the opening song of the first part of season 2 and I'd feel braver and more hopeful.

I've been trying to explain to people since season 1, that Rudy gets better, but not as some kind of redemption story. It's fundamentally a coming-of-age story, it's just that Rudy's character has an extra 20 years of trauma, bad habits, and mistakes. He doesn't stop being a perv, everyone still subtly thinks he's a perv, but he matures and picks up responsibilities, so all of the perverted stuff increasingly takes a back seat as the story progresses.

people have very weird misunderstanding on how change work and how improving oneself work, it not instant process that happen like snap of the finger or just flip the switch and done thing, it a slow process that you move little by little. If you paid close attention, you can actually spot Rudy change little by little through out the series:
- Rudy was at peak with his pervertness at the start, still carrying around his old sense of value before being isekai along with all his other bad trait.
- At first, Rudy was still being selfish a lot, only think of himself and only think of other on how they will benefit him. Overtime he start to genuinely care for other around him like how Rudy try save the family when Paul cheating got found out by trying to understand from all side and come to solution that might led to happy end
- Then 3 year tutor with Eris, who actually punish Rudy for his pervert behavior from time to time. During that time Rudy start learning more social interaction as you can see how well known he was within the city after a few years, which is something he need to actively do to gain that reputation. And by teaching Eris and Ghislaine he gain various exp and learn how think in more perspective, more creative and way to simplify thing
- Transportation disaster happen, Rudy take on more responsibility and protect Eris while trying to make it back home. In this phase, you can still see Rudy still have his pervertness but he slowly control himself on multiple occasion, even at the end of it with Eris sex, Rudy was gonna try to decline at first but after understand how Eris is feeling, he give in. Unlike previously where he left pervert on rampage, at this point he already start thinking about it more before doing anything and control himself.
- The whole college arc with Slyphy already been cover in video but i also want to again point out that Rudy was continuously thinking for other people in this arc and try thinking in that person perspective as well, something that the old selfish Rudy wouldn't do
- Then the whole Roxy and Rudy cheating, yes i admit cheating is wrong but Rudy was at his lowest and Roxy was also taking advantage of him as well but what make Rudy a better person is how he act after it and we even have the perfect example to compare, which Paul and Lilia:
+ Paul was at the peak of his life but he still cheat and both Paul and Lilia keep it hidden until they got busted, from every way you view it Paul was 100% wrong from the start to end, wrong in how he handle it.
+ Rudy at lowest point, father died, mother vegetation state, mentally broken down, blaming himself continuously and even more when he think he have to bring the new to Norn who love Paul so much, everything crushing him. Rudy couldn't get out of it by himself so Roxy intervene and in that moment of weakness, Rudy made the mistake but it also save him and drag him out of it.
=> Here come the good part, what did Rudy decide to do after it? Rudy man up and take responsibility, he and Roxy both knew they were wrong so they head home and tell Slyphy the truth, not running away or hiding it like Paul did, he come home to Slyphy to Confess, to ask for Forgiveness then Permission, if Slyphy said no, he and Roxy would end it there as both knew they were wrong.Yes cheating is wrong but the way Rudy deal with it was more mature than whatever Paul ever did or anyone else would
The journey of Rudy in MT is about him living his second life to the fullest, improving himself but not changing into a completely different char, at the end of day Rudy is still Rudy but he become a better man over the series, from pervert NEET to a true family man
Yea, they've been consuming WAAY too much sanitized unrealistic protagonists in anime they think thats how real life people act.
Most animes over cover a small chapter of someone's life but this covers many chapters of a person's life. Going over many character flaws and flaws in other characters. One of the things in this anime is that despite their flaws they can still be good. Paul cheated on his wife and while someone people in the real world might label that person a scumbag for life but he was ultimately redeemed and more than redeemed by the end. Rudy is no different. Despite having living a whole another lifetime he felt he was somehow superior to everyone around him. That he could just toy with people and while intellectually he was learning and getting smarter his stunted growth as person was all the more apparent and had gotten in his way multiple times sometimes tragic. Only now has he finally come to the realization that he is not so superior that he originally believed and that what he had learned in his previous life really amounts to next to nothing.
Completely forgot to mention that Sylphie is the best girl. Roxy is OK but to be honest she feels like a lesser version of Sylphie.

I feel like the roxy situation could have been handled better but I also think rudy being polyamarous both fits him as a person and leaves room for complex conversations about relationships that people treat as black and white. I don't love that sylphie was waiting for it to happen but I also don't think rudy is a bad person for having room in his heart to love more than one person deeply.
To be honest, there is no better way to honor Paul's legacy than to take on another wife. That being said, it is also interesting to compare the two. Paul cheated on his wife in their own home, and intended to keep that secret until it no longer could be kept. Meanwhile, Rudy cheated on his wife while half the world away, in a time of emotional turmoil, and decided to just come out and be honest with his wife about it, instead of keeping it a secret.
As for Sylphie, expecting such a thing kinda makes sense when you consider the different environments she lived in. After Rudy got shipped off, she spent a lot of time visiting their home, a mostly stable house where Rudy's dad had two wives. Afterwards, she spent time with Luke and Ariel, who were both phenomenally perverted themselves, and would go on at lengths about the reputation of the Greyrat bloodline for being notorious womanizers.

The reason why this is such a good redemption and forgiveness story is because it doesn't gloss over just how hard redemption and forgiveness actually are and how often we miss the mark even when we try what we think is our best to not make any more mistakes.

I agree with most of what you've layed out. I went from S1 to manga and straight to LN so a lot of things I was hoping S2 would show got cut out. Him reflecting while trying to help Norm had much more of an impact due to lenght it was drawn out. And that length of time plays a huge part in the scene I feel. The thing with Roxy, yeah its annoying he cheated but his depression in the LN just felt so much heavier. A long 3 weeks after they got out of the dungeon. Heavily depressed, not eating or talking to anyone. Everyone was desperate to help him out and Roxy had the best intentions at the start. But with Elinalise pushing for it, a drunk Roxy took advantage of a vulnerable Rudy. I think the LN did a better job at showing how awful they felt when they realized what they did. Thinking Roxy is pregnant, Rudy does step up and take responsibility for his actions, and Roxy was willing to disappear after apologizing to Sylphy. It just feels very real.
To be honest, I was really surprised by how quickly the dungeon act happened. I feel that all of the emotions the LN drawn out for the readers to really feel the impact of everything was too important to cut out. But I understand not many people would watch an anime if it was too slow.

Roxy still knew rudeus had a wife who was expecting a baby before willingly sleeping w him. That made me hate them both.
I think the show missed a point from the light novels that makes things more awkward, it doesn't really show us that well how screwed up Roxy got after being lost a month in the dungeon and just when she had given up and waited to die, Rudy saves her in the last second. They are both badly F:d up when they sleep with each other.
The novels also have chapters from the perspective of Roxy, Eris and Sarah that gives us their feelings and tell us why they act the way they do so we do miss a bit of the story when they only focus on Rudy even if he is the protagonist-kun.
Just let it go, ok? It already happened and nothing's gonna change that.

Hey, good video, a bit of a long explanation on some stuff the anime skipped (from the web novels):
The problem is the anime did a horrifyingly terrible job at explaining what happened with Roxy and why she did what she did to save Rudeous. They don't show you how Rudy literally loses his shit again, day after day for weeks waking up in bed, constantly reflecting in Paul and his parents and family in his past world, believing he wasn't good enough and he left his family be destroyed once again by his lack of capacity to overcome a situation, running his head throught it, blocked in place till exhaustion, then he'd collapse sleeping, wake up from nightmares and repeat...
But yeah, unfortunately when you cover 2 seasons in 1, things aren't covered. I don't appreciate how we don't see even a quarter or Rudy's relationships with each and every secundary character, you see a glimpse of it, and some important parts, but its not just that. If you check the anime and see 20 situations worth of notice (character bonding / development) the reality would be closer to 60, people trust him and he learns to trust people and be there for them cause he wants to be good for the family he choses (that being the people around him / friends).
Unfortunately a very mediocre adaptation at best, Roxie's dungeon time was crucial on explaining what happened, it should have been atleast 1 entire episode of her trying to scrap by, managing his magic mana regeneration while escaping through portals from room to room, often in the brink of collapse due to hunger and physical / mental exhaustion, while always barely surviving long enough to randomly get teleported to the same initial (and extremely claustrophobic) dungeon room.
After all, Rudy finds her in her last attempt at trying to escape from that inicial room that didn't have any monster spawns where she used to rest / sleep and count the attempts at escaping. She knew she was going to die, and she made her mind up at trying that last time even if she had to die to monsters instead of waiting for her life to run out while lying on the floor, she didn't want to give up at any minimal chance there might be at surviving. But ofc, its very important to show 3 minutes of that context at most, not talk about her struggles almost at all, barely imply the depth of the situation and the crudeness of it, and instead show how she wets herself out of fear when she's about to die. Idk, you tell me, everytime i think about the adaptation I consider it worse and worse. It was a 7 initially, now I'm debating saying its a 6, might even be a 5.5/10.
I'd wish it had been twice as good, and thats a problem if I ask for that, cause I rate things really highly tipically (to me a 10 is not that hard to get). Hope anyone found this interesting and reads the novels, either web or light ones. I haven't read the light ones, I know some things change, all I can say is I personally liked the web novels a lot.

She doesn't want Aerial to move in as she thinks she would be booted out by her. As ling as the other wives are equal to her she's OK. Roxy falls fir Rudy at 5 bit knows she needs to let him grow up that's why she tells him "Say that to me again in five years." Eris teaches him to respect women or get beat up. She also knows when he gets serious in a fight she's no match for him and that he let her fight while he protected her. Even when he wanted to fight monsters.

It's a noncommittal answer that allows you to end that topic for now, without dealing with potential emotional fallout from turning them down right then.

@@JayceCH. Some of the word choice makes it rather exaggerated, but outside of the Roxy part that's pretty much correct based on the story. Sylphie was bullied, and later saved by Rudy, although I don't believe her feelings really grew to the point of love until some time after the mana disaster. She also was very understandable about him having multiple wives having known both him and his father, although she had some people she wouldn't ever be fine with him marrying like the princess or Nanahoshi.
Basically their comment isn't far off from the actual story, and the difference seems to mostly just be interpreting what was written a bit differently for some parts.
I enjoyed almost every part of Mushoku Tensei, but this made me drop the show. Honestly I can't even explain why. I've watched and loved harem anime before, but this just rubbed me the wrong way. (Maybe it's because I love Sylphie lmao)

I think this is the first time I felt genuinely uncomfortable watching something. It just felt so disappointing to watch Rudy fumble and betray Sylphie. I’m not against polygamy, do what you want aslong as you don’t harm anyone, it was just the fact Sylphie wanted him to remain faithful and he didn’t, that’s what irks me.

The thing that got to me was the multi wives thing. I know I know, its in the manga. The aspect that I disliked was that Sylphie has such low self esteem that she already expected him to cheat/sleep around. She didnt want to loose Rudy so badly she just accepted it. It felt like the show reinforced her low self esteem by not having Rudy have any repercussions for cheating.
I think you overthink that scene a little to much, for Silphy the whole having multiple wifes situations its not really bad, again she is not a millis believer so polygamy is completely ok.
I love how you instantly character caricaturized Sylphie as having low self esteem when EVERY character moment we've seen of her says otherwise, and Sylphie straight up spells it out that she always expected it.
The second half of season 2 was so good, I immediately went out and read the rest of the light novels. I can't wait for season 3 and beyond. And hopefully the author keeps writing side stories or from another characters' pov.
Here's how the ending could have been fixed.
TL;DR, I know that this was probably how this was written in the LN, but this season could've used an extra episode.
First, Sylphy doesn't forgive rudeus right away. I feel like the climactic end to the last season was just better in every aspect. With rudeus having an episode to reflect on what happened and had time to process everything. I wish Sylphy did something similar where she's, mad at rudeus for cheating. Then wonders if it's her fault. And then she realizes that even though rudeus did cheat, he still came back and had the decency to tell her. This in a way would mirror rudeus progression where he first blames eris for leaving, then himself, and then realizes that he still has so much to live for between finding his mom and sylphy, plus all the family he did find.
Second, rudeus wouldn't ask to take roxy as a second bride first but admits to cheating. It bothers me that rudeus comes home to his wife and just to say "I want a second wife". And what norn says about how sylphy was constantly thinking about rudeus while he was gone hits hard. So instead of starting with "I want another wife" he should've started with admitting that he cheated and then begged for forgiveness. And instead of saying how rough he had it when norn yells at him he just takes it. Sylphy would then go on her emotional arc I described earlier and then rudeus and sylphy would talk about what happened, why it happened, and what to do next.
I'll never be able to convince my friend's that this show is good, but I'm fine with that

I love the story but rudy's antics and decision is definitely making it hard for me to enjoy it. I even stopped watching halfway through season 2 part 1. Fortunately I push myself to watch part 2 and it reminds me why I love this series so much. It is definitely a masterclass in the isekai genre

Just a thought, but if Rudeus wasn't a reincarnated old and pervy man and was just a kid growing up in a fantasy world with a bit of a perverted side, they'd probably still think he's trash but who is also a kid growing up and experiencing things. The problem is that no one can see that Rudeus is a kid growing up in a fantasy world. He was given the perverted memories of his old life. In every other isekai where the MC is reborn in another world, Rimuru another pervert is reborn as a slime but it is less real as it tends to cover up all of that with him being a slime and a leader of a country. Even though a slime, he is seemingly only a few years old though is not made a big deal. Rudeus is more of a real character as he is burdened with the memories of his past life. It's rated as a top isekai for it's world and attention to detail. The fact that people would expect Rudeus to have been a changed individual in the first season shows how much that even when in a fantasy world, they're stuck in another. This would make every other reincarnated character fake and hiding the true darkness from their past life under wraps. While I'd probably say that one's past life shouldn't matter, memories will still effect a person and change will be difficult. Rudeus had something that in this life, he wanted to do. Could have remained a recluse even from the start. He could have done nothing. Without the man god or anyone telling him, he grew passionate about magic. Despite that including other things, Rudeus had chosen to take steps forward. He took the steps to leave home and would later take the steps to respect other people. This world becomes his real world while still fantasy to us. No more could he be a degenerate as everything would start to matter. He gains deep respect for Sylphy and strives to do what's best towards her. Rudeus is not the man he was. that man died a sad and pitiful life if not a degenerate. Even while Rudeus converses in that form with the man god, he thinks less and less like how he used to and it's more of his form of dread and fear of what may occur down the road. Rudeus is the main character of the universe, he just happened to get the memories of his past life. If he was just an unredeemable pervert, he would've never have been isekaied as he would have only cared about himself. Instead, he put his life in front of the classic isekai truck without knowing what might come next. The show does not say to kill yourself to receive a second chance nor does it condem being awful and it will turn out right. It shows how while staying a recluse might be easy, it's better to get out there. That people can change when the choose to put in a little effort. You just need to take a little outside the gate you put around yourself and face reality. While some might like other scenes of the anime, more powerful scenes, I still loved it when Rudeus who became parinoid of leaving home because of trauma in his past life's memories as it was when Rudeus took the first step to not being who he was, but towards being Rudeus Greyrat.

You know what. Yeah. Sure. I'll give this anime another chance. I dropped it after that episode where Rudy and the other girl got kidnapped and he tried to use the situation as a way to humble her even though he had absolutely no control over it. I swear, the audacity of that literal man-child to not use powers he could have used before she got beat up and then swooping in to save them had me so disgusted. Then the gall of him to lecture her as if he knew any better? Made me drop it mid-episode. I might be getting some details wrong, but the absolute disdain I remember feeling in that moment was so visceral that I still hold onto them this day. His degenerate behavior sure didn't help.

I don't think Mushoku Tensei is bad because of Rudeus being the pedo scumbag he is (having a deeply flawed MC is not a problem by itself). The real problem is how Mushoku Tensei frame those flaws and especially the interactions with young girls/women in a show that is supposed to be about personal growth. Many shows depict much more violent content: for example Vinland Saga has murder, pillaging, rapes, slavery, AOT has its MC carry some crazy shit as well and let's not forget Death Note who had one of the most psychopathic narcissist MC ever made into anime yet neither of those face nearly as much backslash as Mushoku Tensei.
Many anime are scored just for animation so this doesnt really hold up.
But yea, people want to self insert as the protagonist SO HARD that they get upset when the protagonist is morally wrong sometimes.

Honestly i love this show for it’s flaws, it’s just a power fantasy where the self insert mc gets away with everything scotfree, there are consequences to things that happen and he grows as a person, getting a better life

Also, I think the anime fails to convey this but Rudeus is probably shown less pervy because he is just directing 99% of his lust to Sylphie, he gropes her whenever he can like during the whole "I'm pregnant" scene.
3:55 is not only about his abilities in magic, Rudeus did what Ariel couldn't and rounded the whole special class (Zanoba was already on his side from the beginning, Beast girls by punishing them, Cliff by gifting him a fleshlight, and he is pals with Nanahoshi)
5:14 so, the problem was not really about Norn getting compared to Rudeus, instead it was about her having a hard time accepting reality, the fact that she had a bad impression of Rudeus but EVERYONE else admired him made no sense to her, like she once again was in the wrong, as always.
