Hi everyone, we are okay! I got so many messages asking and in Tokyo - we experiences a strong shake but nothing like the residents up in Miyagi or Fukushima. There's still a tsunami warning. The situation is still being assessed, hard to do at night between midnight and 1am. Thank you for thinking of us. Kanae and Leo and fine - Kanae is trying to get back to sleep. I can't just yet.
Please take care - these moments when you feel helpless make you think about life and how precious it is - tell someone you love how much you love them today.

Japan is a great country, culture, and people. Unfortunately, its geological situation is on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Science is still far from being able to predict when, where, and how strong an earthquake would be. Hopefully everything is okay. Keep safe!

Dutchsince literally called this a week ago. Go check his latest video. He does gives a warning of when and where to look for an earthquake and his predictions are true. An earthquake may not be exactly where he predicts but it'll be with a few hundred kilometers. Honestly, Dutchsince is your best source for earthquake info. If you live in earthquake prone areas, it's worth giving him a view.

Well its call the pacific ring of fire and it kinda makes a big ring (hence the name) around all coastal areas of the ocean. Japan just has far more earthquakes due to it sitting on many local fault lines but that actually makes them far more prepared for the ring of fire big ones than most other major coastal areas. If a M9.2 hit the western coast of north america it would be a total disaster the earthquake early warning system is not done yet and won't be nearly as integrated as japan's due to the multiple states/countries that need to be involved to get a large enough network of sensors to give enough warning of the big one. TVs in japan will automatically turn on, radio's will turn on and retune automatically, trains/elevators/PA systems/factories all react to the early warning automated messages giving people seconds to minutes to react before the earthquake actually hits which can save many lives.

Yea, I hate the "wake and shake" when it hits at night. Here in Tsuchiura was a good rumble, there was two and the second was the bigger and more up and down. We live in a one story house, so close to ground and we could feel the waves.

I was in my first earth tremor in Okinawa in 2017. We were staying in the top floor, which is 5 in Japan. Only lasted a second or two.
The other time I was in kyoto in August 2018. I was woken up at 5.10 am by what I thought was a truck close by to where I was staying, only to find out later it was an earthquake.

I grew up in L.A. area, and we had the 1994 Northridge quake which was a 6.9 or 7.0, it was terrifying and the aftershocks over 5.0. Look and listen to your pets, dogs, cats, birds as they have the ability to hear subsounds below the ability of humans to hear, and they react! Birds flying wildly, dogs barking, and cats scurrying about the house. They are your best early warning "system"--.

that 'movement' before the shake was the P wave hitting you (the Primary wave) of the earthquake. What shakes you and scares the crap out of everyone and causes the most damage is actually the S wave (the Secondary wave). Glad you're safe!!

    • @S.K.R.E.Inc.

I guess surface waves are null and void, then (P, S, Surface). Curse you, public school!

    • @riakata
      @riakata 2 роки тому +1

Its the P wave that also gives everyone early warning thanks to the speed of light being far faster fiber optic sensors can pick up the P-waves far out in the ocean fast and the further away the more warning you get before the secondary wave hits. In Japan its used to cause the trains to emergency stop (probably why the bullet train that derailed wasn't a disaster as they were likely already stopping as hard as possible before they derailed) factories to safe, etc...

In this earthquake, about 1 minute after one earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5, there was another earthquake with a seismic intensity of over 6. Therefore, people had the illusion that there was one long earthquake.
In addition, since this sentence was generated by Google Translate, there may be some parts that are difficult to convey.

Living in Southern California, I've had my experiences with large earthquakes. The scariest earthquake was the Landers Earthquake on June 28, 1992 at about 5 am. I live about 40 miles (60 km) away from the epicenter. That earthquake shook hard for at least 90 seconds and was 7.4 on the Richter Scale. There was a small earthquake that measured 3.1 on the Richter Scale a few days ago that was centered about 15 minutes from my house. But like you said John, earthquakes are scary and you feel totally helpless and powerless when they hit.

    • @S.K.R.E.Inc.

Yup. I lived through Ridgecrest on July 5, 2019 (8:19 PM, 7.1) and IMMEDIATELY thought it was the Big One due to its proximity with the San Andreas. Turns out it wasn't. What shocked me though, was the numerous people that were woefully unprepared, and the hidden shock I felt that if it hit at the same time a day EARLIER, distaster would strike in the form of city-destroying fires due to the fireworks being launched. It would have been San Francisco 1906 in SoCal. Thankfully it wasn't. On a side note, my dad lived through Northridge in 1994 (6.7), when it hit DAYS after he moved to LA. He nearly got crushed by the ceiling while in bed. He went to Orange County after that, and he still got scared by the shockers that were in Chino Hills and La Habra

It has been a little over 16 years (March 15, 2006) since I joined ‘You Tube’ and it was launched February 14, 2005, the prior year… so it has been around 17.1 years: I have seen it grow by leaps and bounds. As for this earthquake… “I am very relieved you and your family are safe.” Too many sad memories of the other one, which happened 11 years and 7 days ago, only to have this one follow just a few days after the anniversary of the last one; so close to the same area. I lost too many good friends in that one and I still grieve over their loss still today. It is a great reminder to all of us that Mother Nature will always win in the end and remind us about our mortality. Stay safe and many blessings to you.

I don’t blame you for reaching for your camera when this happened. If you live in a place where earthquakes are prevalent (I grew up and live in the San Francisco Bay Area), you tend to be less reactive from a safety standpoint than we’re taught to be.
Kanae, being a mother, had a more instinctual reaction, so she had you covered… and had Leo covered, quite instinctually! So you worked well as a team!
There are so many videos and stories about dogs and cats making a run for it, 10 to 30 seconds prior to a quake coming, so your “sense” of an earthquake coming is probably very real… I’m also curious, you said you mentioned wondering if a quake was coming, in your livestream… was it “earthquake weather” (warm and still)? That’s what we always notice here in California.
Back in the quake of 1989, I was in my car stuck at a dead stop in traffic, and about 30 seconds before the quake hit, the radio station stopped broadcasting… just shows you how quakes travel, it took out the station broadcast wherever it was, closer to San Francisco, before we felt the quake.
Chris Broad also posted a quick video from Sendai. He was freaked out! But closer to the epicenter, so it makes sense.
You may as well stay up all night editing. There will probably be aftershocks, so you won’t get restful sleep anyway!
    Take care!

I was a little judgemental after hearing you had kids, but you know what? That's very unfair of me- you seem VERY uneasy... and I grew up in California and have gone through this plenty of times. So, I know what to do because of drills and experiences. Practice with you AND the little ones. Have drills WITH tsunami warnings too- aftershocks can be REAL bad also. I am very glad you are safe with the little ones. And just know, the next one will be easier for you! ❤️

Remember me, hahahaha. John seriously, your first instinct was to hit record first? Go to the baby first dude! And congrats to you and Kanae on becoming parents, I didn't know until your video just now. Funny enough, my first search of "Tokyo Earthquake" on Google showed your video as the first video result.

Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed. I hope that earthquake is the last one for awhile. I would agree that experience, of going through an earthquake, is deeply unsettling.. And John, I do hope that awful feeling goes away soon. I am glad you and yours are all safe. Go cuddle up your wife and baby boy, it will help them and you. Love from Minnesota. Update: John, I just watched your upload “Kitchen Supply Shopping Street”. Who knew you would get that earthquake.

@ Only in Japan, John glad to see you are all ok after that earth quake. I'm watching your kitchen supply street vlog but I think you did jinx Japan when you mentioned about an earthquake. 😦😦
But maybe you have a secret ability to predict earthquakes.
We also had one recently in South Australia but it was only a little one in comparison, a 3.7 on March 5
    Take care. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

For most, it just looks like stuff moving, but the video cannot capture the feeling of powerlessness that you feel when things are moving around you.

lol... are you SURE you didn't jinx it, the other day ?... just kidding. Used to live in So Cal.... went through four major ones..... and a gazillion tremors.... funny how you can get used to it.

I’m so glad you and your family are safe. Thank you for sharing your experience with the Earthquake. I was in the Earthquake at Candlestick stadium in San Francisco in the eighties and you do have a deer in the headlight daze for a bit. It was definitely an experience that is permanent in your memory. So glad everyone is safe.

Oh no... Are you ok John? How's everyone? Thank you for the update. Are you on elevated ground? Take care my friends. 😓 Sorry I was late in checking.
You will need a strong table to shield under. We in CA have helmets I got for us. I hope you guys get yours too, just in case. Flashlights under the bed and safety bags with food and meds in a storage by the room or exit.

So weird how ppl like my (and probably your) wife just shake it off, lol. I'm always terrified growing up around the New Madrid Fault in the southeast US....Itabashi here and it shook damn good.

If one hadn’t ever experienced ( myself) or did not imagine what it would be like to experience it, it looks like you were just watching everything shake. Yes, sound, but you were experiencing being jostled as much as your belongings. I can only imagine how you were/are upset. I have never experienced one, but there’s potential. What really scares me is the real possibility of liquefaction. Maybe by seeing your video, some of us might think more about what we can do/ be prepared. Like, I think it’s not a bad idea to keep your phone and a little flashlight. God bless you and I am glad you all are ok.

Glad everyone is fine, (thank God.). We live in earthquake country. (San Francisco Bay Area) So we get earthquake often, you will never get used to it, but it does happens all to often, you just have react to it and making sure everyone is safe and okay. Suggest, make a emergency food box and have lots and lots of bottles water on hand. (beer is “NOT” an option). Also have an first aid kit, flashlight, and what else you think you will be needing for one week, and don’t forget about the outdoor tent, put it in a safe area that you can get too right away. Take Care and Be safe, glad everyone is safe.🙏

Hello John, I'm very happy you and your family are safe! First time I experienced an earthquake in Japan, I thought maybe something was wrong with my drink, because no one around me seemed to react to it. 2nd time was freakier, as I was on the 5th floor of my apartment building. Definitely a moment of panic. I also wanted to say that your videos are wonderful! I've been showing them to residents at an elderly care facility for our monthly Japanese culture programming and they love you and your content! Please keep on keeping on! Much love to you and your family!

Glad you are all safe. In Adelaide we had a magnitude 3.8 earthquake at 7.20am on 6 March. It woke me up but I didn’t know what the sound was…I thought a bird had flown into the window. Earthquakes are such strange things. I hope there are not too many aftershocks there.

Wow I remember I was in Kindergarten when the Japan earthquake happened in 2011. My kindergarten teacher told us about the earthquake when it happened. She told us about it because some kids in the class are Japanese and also because we live in Los Angeles so earthquakes are very common for us here as well. I remember when a few years ago California had some earthquakes and I totally get you I felt like I was going to pass out because there is literally nothing you can do. Now I’m in the 11th grade it’s all so crazy I hope Japan stays strong you guys are a great country and I wish nothing but the best for everyone in Japan
