We can’t judge how people feel, we just don’t know people’s backgrounds, medical history, mental and physical state etc. foreigners wearing masks because they don’t want to be “bad tourists” is a poor assumption since no one is judging them on that. Unless sick, no reason to have to wear a mask in Japan unless you want to, it’s up to each person the way it’s been in Japan as long as I’ve lived here from 1998.
many japanese have lots of allergies and reactions like coughing and sneezing so a mask was always "the right thing to do in public". I saw a woman sneeze at a restaurant people just got up and left because she sneezed in their direction, it was crazy. about 3-4 tables emptied immediatly and the restaurant owner scolded her in almost shouting that she and her partner left as well.
It's like that now, fortunately, in Japan and in the States. However, it definitely wasn't like that for those "few years". I'm not sure about Japan, but where I lived, it was mandated to wear a mask, and depending on where you went, you could get harassed for not wearing one. I hated this period of time, personally, and it made me resent masks to an extent. Like John said, I'm just glad that we're past that, and now we all live in a judgement-free zone where you can make up your own decisions.
Truth be told that I'll never set a foot in Japan while the "masquerade" is still going strong there.... don't really want to run into a situation where I might be accused (directly or indirectly) of spreading something among the population! Either no one uses masks (unless they have common cold), or everyone uses masks because it really is a serious issue... there's no half-way in between for me, with some being seen as careless people and others seen as good examples!!

Hi, John. Good afternoon to you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. People in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 still wear mask 😷 for personal protection against the JN.1 and KP.5 new mutational virus 🦠 that is currently free-flowing in the air. Though not many people wear mask, but it is safer to wear masks in public places like shopping 🛍️ 🏬 malls, in the trains 🚈, and other crowded and / or confined places like elevators and theatres and cinemas. We as a family also use AIR TAMER devices for extra protection. Even though it is not mandatory, but it’s safer for us. The Hong Kong Government and hospital authorities ask people ( elderly people and young toddlers) to get early Flu-jabs as Fall / Winter season sets in .
As someone pointed out, in Japan, there is no requirement to wear masks outside of hospitals. However, more people continue to wear them compared to other countries. In addition to the reasons John mentioned, I think this is because Japanese people generally feel less resistance to wearing masks. As a Japanese person, I feel that while people overseas may see mask-wearing as a restriction on their freedom, in Japan, it’s more like putting on a jacket when it gets a bit chilly. Cultural and habitual differences might make mask-wearing among Japanese people stand out. On the other hand, you might notice that sunglasses are less commonly worn in public here. However, many Japanese people understand that wearing sunglasses is common in the West, so when many Westerners wear them in public, it doesn't raise any suspicion. Of course, this is just a general observation-personally, I do wear sunglasses when playing golf, but ultimately, it depends on the time and place.

I wear a mask if I’m in a crowded situation and the levels of Covid are high lately, like if we’re in the middle of a surge. I’m older and have enough annoying health conditions. I’ve never had Covid, but I’ve had a couple of colds that weren’t Covid or flu that put me in bed for four days. I had to wear one only when I was sick at the school in 1998. The school manager gave me one, nose running all day through it, but I made it! Everyone was sick - it was just something we did to do what we could since we HAD TO be at work.
I honestly wish that people in America would keep up with wearing mask when they are sick. I’m not saying wear a mask when you’re not sick. I’m saying if you have a cold or the flu I wish we had the same decency and courtesy that people in Japan show for each other. I think one of the most disgusting things I see is when people are sick and they sneeze in the air or just cough without covering their mouth.

First of all, Leo is soooo cute! When I was in Japan in the spring, I had some HORRIBLE cold. Not the unspeakable thing, but I wore a mask to protect the Japanese people from my phlegm. I like masks in that sense, my mother used to say “cover your mouth!” But with a mask, it really works to help you do that. Only when I’m sick do I wear them now because we do have to think about others well being and have control over that.
Considering that i have a problems with breathing sometimes i probably wouldn’t wear a mask🤔although it could be a common courtesy unless you’re sick 🙂Thank you for this one 🙂👍!!!

On my trip last year, the only time I was required to wear a mask was at a shrine museum on the Shimanami Kaido route. Was kinda funny since it was one of the quietest least busy places in the whole trip.

You are not going to be seems as a bad tourists for lot wearing a mask. Please don’t wear one because of that, it’s incorrect thinking. Most Japanese are not wearing them unless they themselves are sick. If you want to wear one, it’s up to you but don’t do it because you’re afraid people may judge you for it. That’s a wrong assumption. That’s the point of the stream today.
Indeed that is the norm in Japan, don’t get others sick because you’ll feel shameful if you do. Not your fault if you wore a mask, did your duty - had to go into work. If you’re really sick and can stay home, that’s even better!
just got back from japan a few days ago. wore a mask where it was crowded (trains, stores), and when i had a cough as well. otherwise i was maskless for the most part!
The original Japan live streamer John must feel a sense of pride in seeing the amount of Japanese especially women doing live streams in English on UA-cam these days. Really turned into a growth industry! 😂 It's great.
Haven’t seen how much and if it’s grown but it seems like it has :) good! I started in 2017 to keep me company while hitchhiking but had been doing it since Justin.TV and U STREAM back in the day. It was really a different world then!
My dad wears a mask because he's older so he's more concerned with catching the big c now. If people are coughing or sneezing around him he'll take out a mask and put it on.
If it makes him feel comfortable, it’s not a bad thing 😊 does it help, not so much for defense unless it’s N95. Just move away. Only if the sick person wears one is it really effective - best to get good sunlight, take D3 and zinc supplements and get good rest. Stay healthy that way :)
@@onlyinjapanGO He feels less nervous, and doesn't force it on anyone else. Just his preference :) Yeah, he has an n95 for that reason. But also tends to stick around in the outdoor settings the most. He prefers to sit in the fresh air rather than inside anywhere after all that inside time we had. He's super into that stuff.
During the “miracle” years in the 1960s and 1970s, pollution was off the charts bad! Air and water. Yes, masks were so necessary. The summer, it stank so bad in Tokyo, the Sumida River was sludge. Glad it’s better and we can breathe fresh air again.Hearing the stories from older Japanese about the city is both fascinating and horrifying how they lived.
Before that time period that shall not be mentioned I was surprised to see on a flight departing from Japan that almost everyone was wearing a mask. At first I thought there were sure a lot of. people who were sick since that's the only time I had seen Japanese in Japan wearing masks, but then I realized they were being worn to keep from getting sick in the confined air space of an airplane. I guess that was a precursor to what would be ahead.
In the beginning, we didn’t know much and it was warranted. Air quality on planes is not bad, air is cycled through very frequently. I was surprised! Trains are not nearly as well ventilated. The air is dry on planes so there is some good value in that sense to masks but it sure is confining when you’re already confined. I still got sick wearing a mask on a plane surrounded by other sick people many years ago. Sometimes, it’s luck of the draw who you sit next to.
Working at an airport, I was seeing all sorts at the onset of the pandemic, starting with a widely circulated picture of a lady & her son with water coolers fashioned into space helmets on their heads, to some air-crews dressed in full PPE 'crime scene' suits, masks & goggles before slipping out of them (except the masks) once onboard their aircraft. Talk of overkill.
Hi John, I just came back to the states from a 2 weeks trip to Japan. Yes, still many Japanese people I see wears masks, but also many people not. The weather is so damn hot, it was a pain wearing masks in this weather.
@@onlyinjapanGO I saw a few on the trains and occasionally on the street, but mainly just in restaurants. I think a lot of tourists have pre-conceived notions about both Japan and the Japanese people.
Is it a salad??? No is the supposedly correct answer about whether FF, ketchup, and avocado together is a salad. Yes, is the true answer. Your son is right.. The mixing makes it a salad. It has two colours besides the white, green and red from avocado and tomato which makes it a more balanced salad. The tubers (Fried potatoes) give it a fling base. The question should be perhaps , is it a typical healthful salad It isn’t. Smart son. 😂
Masks scream insecurity. A ton of people here in Taiwan wear them because they are so introverted and shy. Especially women not wanting to put on makeup. I kid you not I even see people wearing them as they drive their car!! When I visit my girlfriend's parents they open the door both wearing masks?! Where is the logic? 😂
Japanese are introverted by nature, so you can see how your comment rings. People are more followers than individual, though it’s macro. Within that, there is a ton of micro individualism like sneaker colors, hair style, interests etc. Yes, I can’t imagine why someone is wearing it alone in the car but keep in mind it could be pollen, some other condition we don’t know about so I don’t judge anymore after being curious and asking people directly why. The answers aren’t because they’re scared. It’s usually some condition.
Hehehe, when I heard that expression, I first laughed so hard it hurt my sides then could never erase the thought 😂 ruining my / any mask experience for me. I’m fine with others though. We don’t know other people’s health, physical condition.
As an American resident living in Japan, like John, I find it odd to sse foreign tourists wearing masks. Especially many Westerners. Made me wonder if they think Japan requires them or they would be negatively treated. I visited Japan as a traveler before and it wasn't that common to see. I still have my pictures and videos from 2015-2017. Rare to see. Now, many have been traumatized by the recent pandemic and many families or schools telling kids they need to mask up. Almost all in person customer service jobs require them too. Luckily the bars i go to dont require masks from their employees. When I take my local Yokohama blue line train, i see 20-30% wearing them at any time. Almost 50% when i take the Den en Toshi line to work. I understand im just a foreign resident with little to no voice in the social and political space, but i do wish people chill out about it. Wishful thinking but I would not want a school or neighborhood org telling my kid they need to mask up. Good video and just offering my thoughts as i actually live here and not another tourist commenting.
The first time I saw people wearing masks in Japan (in the 2000s) I thought they were wearing them because the air was so polluted LOL. But the air didn’t look bad. Then someone told me why.
NOT if you’re wearing it for “protection” but if sick people do, it absolutely will cut down on infections. Science. Not 100% but it keeps it from spreading which is how we survive / the whole city doesn’t get sick, during Tokyo flu season.
Actually Science says yes. Masks help prevent the risk of respiratory virus transmission. But it's almost impossible to prevent ignorance and disbelief in science when someone believes that science is wrong or not true. When one has reached this point, they are to far gone already and are going to believe something, whether it's true or not. It's to late already to explain anything to them or change their mind. It's a complete waste of time.
But they do! I always used to get sick after any flight, but now after c-19, I learned 2 wear a mask at the airport and during flights, no more colds, and I fly often! So masking is working, use good multiple layers...
Appreciate the non-sensationalised discussion. You gave some facts and observations and weren't judgemental of anyone.

I'm in Tokyo next week, bought lots of cool Courier style neck scarves, all in different colour camo, looks cool as F. I'll wear them on the Subway only otherwise I'll look like I'm doing a hold up. Shows respect too,l don't want to be "that" Foreigner, when in Rome etc.
Without even watching the video yet, if you're sick, wear a mask. Enough said.
Common sense for Japan 😊🇯🇵 hope you had a fun trip!
Wearing Masks is a must for a safety reasons, even if you're sick. Thanks John for having fun with Leo in Odaiba. I'll catch your next live real soon.
Japanese have worn masks at various times since the 1950’s when the smog in Tokyo was terrible.
In the high school where I worked in California, the teens will wear a mask to cover up blemishes.
Been doing that for years here :) adds a layer of mystery to people. I remember noticing how pretty people’s eyes were! … then I saw the teeth …. 😳
Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
Hi John, I just came back to the states from a 2 weeks trip to Japan. Yes, still many Japanese people I see wears masks, but also many people not. The weather is so damn hot, it was a pain
wearing masks in this weather.
Are you going to Ramen festival? I plan to go. Hope to see you there.
Perhaps.
masks also stave off the effect of other people's BO
Hi, is it worth paying to go up in Skytree, Tokyo Tower, or Shibuya Sky, or is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building good enough?
Depends … TMGB is free and a nice view. Try the Bunkyoku Civic Building near Tokyo Dome! Nice observatory for free.
@@onlyinjapanGO thank you.
Hi. I love your videos and you have a beautiful son.
Thank you! He’s a good boy 👦🏻 ❤️
❤Happy Sons Day 🎉
Rawdog forever, great explanation for other reasons people would.
🐕 Forever! 😂
I saw very few masks on a quite recent trip.
I don’t see many anymore which is why I’m not sure how the info that wearing one makes you a better tourist …?!? That’s not the reason to wear one 😉
@@onlyinjapanGO I saw a few on the trains and occasionally on the street, but mainly just in restaurants. I think a lot of tourists have pre-conceived notions about both Japan and the Japanese people.
❤
1:45 to be fair, he has a good point.
It’s a very good point! I cannot disagree 😆 hahaha
My family still wear masks whenever we go out in our own country. I still wear masks everywhere I went when I visited Japan last March.
It’s up to each person. If you’re not sick, you don’t *have to* wear one in Japan. I don’t and won’t anymore
I still wear face mask especially in crowded places
Those masks are a good habit.
The question should be perhaps , is it a typical healthful salad
It isn’t. Smart son. 😂
The burger was meme at to be disassembled 😂 he got the pineapple and 1/3 of the meat.
@@onlyinjapanGO 😆
Go Leo go.
He’s still going 3 hours later 😂 🕺
you could smell your iPhone being made that is funny
Smelled like - 16 Pro Max and an iPad Mini 7 today!
In a government hospital i caught covid.
That’s not good 😞
Masks scream insecurity.
I'll never wear a face diaper.
Hehehe, when I heard that expression, I first laughed so hard it hurt my sides then could never erase the thought 😂 ruining my / any mask experience for me. I’m fine with others though. We don’t know other people’s health, physical condition.
Nice vid
It was awsome seeing your smile today!!!
I wish all tourists wear masks. They always talk loudly and spit.
It's very dirty.
The first time I saw people wearing masks in Japan (in the 2000s) I thought they were wearing them because the air was so polluted LOL. But the air didn’t look bad. Then someone told me why.
i actualy like masks, but im a ninja!
That’s another reason to wear one 😂 🥷🏽
Never have never will.
Only when sick, but most people just stay home 🏠 but masks 😷 are not making a mandatory come back anytime soon, never was in Japan.
None of these comments take into account the FACT that masks don't prevent transmission.
Mask vs n95 respirator. N95 and above works.
