Wonderful information about the size of Japan and your maps! Wow! That was extremely informative! I was in a big earthquake in Alaska, so your explanation of types of quakes was also enlightening. So glad you and your family are okay. My family are praying for the fast recovery of everyone affected.

Thank you for this vlog. I completely understand and agree with what you’re saying. I grew up on an earthquake prone region then moved to a large metro city. I have also been frustrated by the sensationalistic reporting in media regardless of its subject or origin. I’ve also been on the receiving end of calls from loved ones worried for my safety because of the news they watched from far away. On one hand it does help the world care about those who are actually suffering from the affects of disaster be it natural or otherwise, but it also fosters fear mongering activity and conversation. In this case, the fear that Japan is dangerous/risky place to visit because of earthquakes has once again been reinforced. No matter where you are in the world when a disaster happens it is a regional event. However, it may be that not as many will care about the news story if it isn’t hyped. So if this type of reporting helps the people truly affected by this tragedy in some way then I am willing to accept it. Let’s just keep educating each other and understanding that ultimately we are each responsible for discovering truth in the right context and let’s not choose to propagate fear but rather hope that the people who are actually suffering will find strength to carry on and help for the things they need to move forward. I pray that those who are suffering and grieving for lost loved ones and property will find compassion and help for their needs. I am looking forward to a trip planned to Japan later this year.

Can’t blame people for the ignorance. They just don’t know. Have to turn it into a teachable moment. It works for kids, and sometimes adults who know they don’t know it all. Life is more fun when you don’t know everything 😂 keep learning.

My wife is Japanese, but we’re in the US so have been paying attention to the news and Twitter etc.
We were just talking about how most Americans don’t realize that earthquakes there happen regularly but are regional, because the news here just says “Japan hit by earthquake” without qualifiers like North Eastern or some such.
Another thing we realized was that with so many people carrying phones, we get a very clear picture of what’s happening outside of the sensationalized news reports.
Thanks for the video, and Happy New Year to you folks!
    明けましておめでとう!㊗️

Yes, to Japanese seeing the international media cover this like it’s the end of the world, it’s both entertaining (comedic) to hear the ignorance and also very disturbing. Stating the region is very important so as not to worry millions of people but it seems that is the point of the international reports 🤦🏻‍♂️ but we know better.

Hi John. Thanks for update. You are right when you say the sound of an earthquake is one of the most terrifying sounds. I lived in Kobe in 1995 in the Great Hanshin Earthquake but now live in Australia. For the first few years back here in Australia, every time I heard a low rumble sound starting or felt some shaking I would instantly be on high alert, with my heart pounding etc. it took some years to eventually get over this. Take care and thank you again. ❤

Crazy isnt it, I first heard the thunder or booming sound in Peru, I was there when a bigish 6 something came through and everyone was screaming and running from buildings, being aussie as well, i was like nah shell be right, didnt realise till a couple of days after when these chippys were plastering up a giant crack in the crappy building i was staying in how much the foundations moved and how badly damaged the building was. I dont feel safe there, but being in Japan at present It doesnt bother me at all, most buildings are safe, like the hotel we stayed in a few days ago 25 floors up, had an emergency survival kit under the bed, thats how well prepared they are.
The big impacts for everyone outside of the impacted region were the 10 minute delays to the shinkansen. But yeah Im glad in Aus we never hear that earthquake sound.

I was travelling through Kobe in 1995 on my way back to Meitoku Gijuku as a student.
Literally on a ferry and felt the swell!
But it is 100% different now with smart phones. The communication and pictures are both far worse and far better than the land line phones of 1995.
My thoughts to everyone living there and rebuilding.

I'm glad to hear you and your family is safe! i think the best way understand how the media is working is if you take a large step back and take a point of view from a person who Japan is not their favorite country and they all know about Japan is Tokyo, Kyoto, 2011 (maybe), and the shinkansen. I tried to explain to my grandma (who heard the news about earthquake and never got the impression that Japan fell into the sea) what going on but she was like "what is Ishikawa" and I have to explain like the picture shown where things are located and she understood. People are always always always going to worry no matter what ( i know this as someone from California and had family from overseas calling us about the massive wildfires fires we had even tho at the time we not in danger. the whole highlighting the entirely country is common as they do that with states or other countries in the US and usually has important or recognizable cities with the actual location of the situation ) to make it worse it the holidays so people tend to go travelling away from home. im not sure how the non local media would explain stuff in more simple terms without causing more confusion for people who are not in the country and don't have a lot information about Japan in the first place.

I’m super happy to hear that you and your family are safe. I have only gotten the opportunity to visit Japan once. I landed May 3rd 2014 and there was an earthquake the very next day at around 5 in the morning. My first ever being from east coast USA , turns out it was a 6.0. Super unnerving to be at the mercy of the ground beneath you. Like someone put a quarter in the little spaceship ride outside the supermarket!

Thank God your OK John. What's amazing about Japan is their building engineering. Of this earthquake was in any other country there would have been a massive death toll and destruction everywhere. I was watching videos of new and old buildings in Japan moving and rocking a lot and it all stayed together. It seems their building style allows flexibility and things ot slide over one another which dissipates the ground movement without amplifying it.

Thank you for the “but” part. That was very eye opening. News outputs all over the world are craving for images and as Japan is the most prepared country (so I think) it is very easy to get hands on those movies and pictures.
Almost anybody who’s never been to Japan has no idea of its geography (how big or small it is) and the impact of any given earthquake throughout the country.
That “but” part should be more relayed through the internet for people to understand.
    Stay awesome Sir.

My family in Japan had plans to go to Kanazawa and Shirakawa go from Jan 2-5 but cancelled even though hotel and Shinkansen resuming operations. Store shelves are empty due to supply chain disruption and restaurants without supplies. More prudent to let the locals recover and visit when things are stabilized.

Firstly to John and family, happy new year and good to see you safe.
I have been to another earthquake education centre near Odiaba. It serves a purpose but great to visit if you are on holidays.
Saw the Japan Airlines/Japan Coast Guard accident. I spent all night glued on UA-cam feeds. Thoughts for the servicemen lost who were assisting in relief effort.

Hi John, thanks so much for putting perspective on the coverage of disasters like earthquakes in Japan. I didn't message you yesterday because I kno you weren't affected by the Noto Peninsula/Ishikawa earthquake. It also didn't help, though that during the day the reports changed for how bad the quake was. The damage was obvious, though. But not in Tokyo. I grew up with lots of minor quakes when I was a kid in Tokyo. And we were hit with a scary quake in Sapporo one year during a visit to Nemuro. I've never been in a hotel that swayed so much... And Nemuro was hit harder, with streets split, and my mom's family memorial in the ohaka was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. I thought the coverage of yesterday and into today--just like you predicted--continues to make it seem like all of Japan has been affected. Your Bosai video was really enlightening, so belated thanks for making them.

Thank you for clarifying this earthquake in Japan. I am set to relocate to Sapporo, and I had no idea what the impact is there. This is very informative. Thanks again.

Its good to know you and your family are OK. You had a nice ride there, and i can empathize with what you are living since i am a 31 y/o chilean living in the capital Santiago, so i've lived two 8+ magnitude earthquakes. And the sound... its deafening (some of us in 2010 listened the sound previous to the movement, like a building site right in your side, a rumbling of earth moving) and here we dont have, even to this day, a preemptive alarm, so the things just hit when you least expect it (in 2015 i was driving, and had to stop in the street bc the movement didnt let me). Stay safe!
