I'm a GenX model 1972 and all the millenial and younger people at work are actually afraid of my 1000 yard stare... my fellow GenX coworkers on the other hand, don't even care...

Lol I am one of the early models of the millennial generation (you know the ones that blend in just fine with gen X folks but were born after the start of the millennial era) and the only 1000 yard stares that scares me is my Boomer parents.

Catching the bus on a busy street at 7, coming home with the key around my neck on a shoelace (so the school knew) with my 6 year old sister & we’d be alone until parents came home around 6.
Newspaper job at 10, Babysitting by myself, a 1 & 2 year old at 12 yo, sometimes late into the night for $1/hr.
People have said to me for years that a) I acted mature for my age but b) look younger than age. Maybe independence & self reliance is what keeps us young!

Isn't that weird?!?!? I've been told the same thing! Even at almost 52, people mistake me for being younger (when I turned 50, co-workers didn't know how old I was and was going to throw me a happy 35th birthday) but also wonder how I could possibly know songs from the era before me (older siblings).

As an early millennial I remember those days when we were off from school we were all outside regardless of weather and had to invent our own games or play games our friends older siblings had played with their friends. We all knew when the moms called us out of the windows for dinner we had to go inside and then rushed back out for a little while till the street lights came on. Our moms either stayed inside or hung out with the other moms on one of the stoop’s gossiping. Those were the days when we didn’t have internet or cellphones in the house; honestly I miss the old days.

    • @walterspaceman5592
      @walterspaceman5592 Місяць тому +1

That is what I remember exactly. But shortly after, these wives and mothers got jobs, it was a bit sadly disgraceful, but needed the extra cash. That is when everything went sideways. Weird shit happened. Divorces, "nervous breakdowns", they called it. Serious drinking. Infidelity ? And people who were strong, began to look tired. Did I mention, you now heard neighbors shouting from "inside" their homes. This was just the beginning of the New Dark Ages we see today.

The way I figure, we age different because our time sense is all effed up. When we were kids, we observed how "certain ages were supposed to act," but as we got to those ages, we were denied. The mantra of "you can have X when you can pay for it yourself" still rings in my ears. They denied us kid stuff, and then expected us to accept that we had outgrown "kid stuff." I know I refused to accept that. I may have to be careful with my spending so I can't get EVERYthing. But I get what I can, no matter how impractical it may be. The year 2000 had not helped in that AT ALL, either. The year 2000 is 20+ years ago, and so 1980.

You just described my childhood exactly. I started a smoking club in the fifth grade. We started with sticks and moved up to Kent cigarettes. Of course I was the president.
Worked in my dads print shop at age 12 collating papers until late hours, then getting my self up for school the next day.
I got suspended for climbing on the school rooftop (book storage room had a roof latch door) in the sixth grade. I told the principal I was gathering up the dodgeballs on the roof. Haha!!!!

Started "baby" sitting my middle and younger brothers as a 5 year old. did I mention my younger brother was an infant? started working "under the table" at 12 as a prep cook at a restaurant, because at 12 I already knew how to prepare food for cooking. by 13 I no longer had birthday parties or birthday presents since my birthday is 2 weeks before Christmas. I had a choice, birthday present or Christmas present but not both. by 14 I was working at a local home goods store legally and was told by my parents that I can now pay for everything I need. phone bill under my name, HS graduation trip, cap and gown, class ring, prom dress all paid for by me. i was a straight a student, cheerleader, marching band member both at school and in my community, color guard, softball, you name it I did it between freshman and senior year. but I should've known better than to believe my parents would help me pay for college. killed myself since I was 12 for nothing, but to go "find a job, you aren't our responsibility anymore now that your 18 - in the middle of my senior year".

She hasn’t decided yet. Her mom, my daughter, has her masters in education! My eldest son is the CFO for one of the largest produce company’s in the country. My youngest deals in elderly care products and disabled persons. Not bad for a LOUSY PARENT!

I grew up in a small factory town in the country. Due to curiosity and unsupervised behavior I had smoked , made out with a girl and felt up several others during a game we called under the blanket, drank liquor, saw porn, , fell out of a tree, started a fire playing with matches, nearly drowned, spied on people having sex, nearly killed by a car, and snuck into a movie with four friends to see Rocky 1 by age ten 😂 All that slowed down because I had to get a job..in the fifth grade…delivering newspapers. To this day when I watch a movie about slavery and there is a part with a slave being whipped..I turn it off because I know exactly how that felt.

Im 57, we were not "Latch Key Kids" they locked us outside (WITHOUT KEYS) until they wanted us back inside. Therefore latch key kids could unlock their home not us Gen-X s.
We drank rubber flavored hot hose water because it was that or mosquito larva filled rain barrel water.
We were forced labor at 8 or 9 gardening, mowing or shoveled walks & drives. Did it for home and the surrounding neighbors places as per mom "they had to put up with us being annoying." So we mowed or shoveled their place for free. When the cousins needed Hay Help we were told to ride our bikes the 5 plus miles out in the country side (given a hunk of paper with lines drawn on it for a map.) Be there by 8 am to mow hay, back in at 3pm to help milk or muck stalls, hay and stack some more and ride home by dark. Some days be there at 5 am to help milk & muck or care for calfs.
Hunt & fish for food because we couldn't afford to buy it.

Not tears, but close. I asked in winter once for a sweater, as I was unfunny big time cold. My dad looked at the stacked cases of cheap unknown brand beer on sale, and then the sweaters, and back again for a good long time back and forth. I could tell this could go either way now. He said, " Are you going to wear it ? ". Remember I think I am his son. And I literally was visibly shivering shaking beside him. He bought me the sweater, I wore it till it became rags. Hard to say these were good times for boomers.

Wow you all sound so bitter. Look what you have accomplished on your own. You are self sufficient. But you raise a bunch of kids that can’t take care of themselves very well. Their kids are even worse. I’m of your generation, I had horrible parents, but it could have been worse and I turned out ok, raised good responsible children that work and provide for their families.
