To exclude relationships you would open the filters menu, go down to the exclude section and open the "Relationships" tab where you can select whatever ships you don't want to see. If the tag you want to exclude isn't there, then you can write it down in "Other tags to exclude". Press sort and filter and you're done!

Some authors will use “&” if it’s a pre-relationship or a “blink and you’ll miss it/ if you squint” relationship. Still always use “&” if you’re looking for platonic. Better yet, just exclude “/“ pairings you don’t want to read if you really want to avoid a romantic ship

When I first started using AO3 I was so confused and scared when I saw like all of the fics in a fandom had a two characters tagged where one was a child and the other a father figure 😭
When they use / for every relationship and you have to do some serious contemplation in order to figure out if they meant to do that or not (and what you plan to do if they did, in fact, mean to do that).
A formal request to fanfic writers: please don't get mad at prople for politely telling you your tags are wrong. More than once I've seen someone who was disgusted by incest losing their mind in the fic and author notes because "a bunch of incest shippers are liking and bookmarking" their stuff, only to find that the incest shippers were there because they put up a sign saying there was incest inside. My guy i don't know how to tell you this but you control the buttons you press.
My favourite version of this was the “Jesus Christ/Rainbowdash” fic, that upon reading was actually just some ~12 year old who really wanted Jesus and Rainbowdash to be best bros

When they use / for every relationship and you have to do some serious contemplation in order to figure out if they meant to do that or not (and what you plan to do if they did, in fact, mean to do that).
A formal request to fanfic writers: please don't get mad at prople for politely telling you your tags are wrong. More than once I've seen someone who was disgusted by incest losing their mind in the fic and author notes because "a bunch of incest shippers are liking and bookmarking" their stuff, only to find that the incest shippers were there because they put up a sign saying there was incest inside. My guy i don't know how to tell you this but you control the buttons you press.
