Hello there! In this episode, we start tackling the sub floor. Lifting it, varnishing, laying insulation. Join us for some heavy lifting, lots of sanding and a few insulation laying mistakes. We talk about regulation compliance, and some advice we had from Paul Smith at Narrowboat Surveys; A consultant we hired to ensure what we were about to build complied with regulations so that when we go for certification, we know we have got it right. Paul Smith was cool and super helpful, but we did not film the session.
…and see 2 exhausted sexagenarians from a full on work week (for us!)
    Days 16-20.

We are a sexagenarian Scottish couple living in England, with a wicked sense of humour embarking on a new life adventure. Roma works as an Oncology Sister in a UK hospital and Colin is an Economically Inactive IT Consultant. We love travelling, so our plan is to take on a narrowboat project and, when ready, take it through the UK waterways, before we are too old to move.

Very thorough prep job on the flooring. Just be careful how well you seal up the bilges with the foil. All bilges sweat in winter on the bare steel and require air flow/ventilation to stop damp and mold building up under the subfloor. I laid the foil in the same way you have then put slits in the edges every couple of feet.

Thanks. We are going to route the bow vents to the sub floor so there is an airflow. We are also thinking that instead of mid ships inspection hatches, we make these a grill so inspection hatches and air flow. We are fitting a grill on the floor at the fridge so the fridge motor draws air up from the bilge, hopefully creating a small air flow.

Hard graft indeed. I love Highland cattle too. Take care.

As a narrowboat dweller, I'm not convinced that there is any benefit to underfloor insulation, however, from the floor up, more is better and I would certainly use the foil stuff within the walls and roof.

Thanks. I kind of agree but as we were lifting the floor and our shell builder asked if we wanted them to do it, we figured we may as well. Defo foil on the roof and we are debating about the walls.

Just wondering if you are attaching the foil with nails or staples. Staples will rust, won't they? Good work. You are wise to listen to your body and stop work when it tells you to stop.

Thanks. Stapling or tacking really with galvanised staples. Not stapling under the sub floor though. I found there was no need as the foil stayed where it needed to.
