This was amazing!!! I never saw the performance rehearsals for this show before. You found a gem! You talking about not seeing rehearsals before reminded me of the Special Olympics sound check from the Diamonds & Pearls era and sound check from your fave Nude Tour in Japan (he’s playing Summertime on the piano for that one). I can get the links for you if you’re interested. There’s also a great performance of Pass the Peas with Maceo. Prince plays a lot of bass on that one (I love Prince on bass 💜)! Great reaction and congrats on 900!!! That is so awesome!

The interview wasn’t done a second time. I think the second time you are seeing it is the same interview they just had to blend the video with the second performance.
You’re really picking up on Prince’s nuances and habits! This performance was filmed in front of a live audience in California earlier that day. “Late night” was when it aired but not when it was filmed. This is an example of why-to edit out sound flubs, etc. I don’t think the interview was re-recorded, tho. That appears to be one take. The last take was the one that was edited and aired. I think they picked up the edit from the pause at the end of the best “Musicology” performance (there’s a difference in crowd noise sound volume). Even now with “live” award shows there’s still a delay so cuss words, etc can be edited out. Those promos they did is what went to local news stations across the U.S. They were personalized with the names of local anchors and tv stations to make it more personal.
They just used the performance that was best (which was the dress rehearsal filmed) that didn’t have the mic fail on maceo. Edited back into the live show .
