  • Hi Guys, today I’ll show you how to Restore my most used Cast Iron Pan. LINK to Milwaukee Drill: amzn.to/2U1wVu3
    LINK to Dewalt Drill: amzn.to/3yKxreY
    LINK to Wire Brush: amzn.to/3xDK0ru
    LINK to Gloves: amzn.to/3Alw9rm
LINK to Goggles: amzn.to/3xsRo8J As you can see, it’s in really bad shape. If you watch my AnitaCooks channel, you know that I use a lot of my cast iron pans regularly. Now, I should’ve done this a long time ago but it’s just one of those things you never get to until you can’t take it anymore when black flakes end up in your food. This pan has passed the stage of scrubbing with salt, hot water and a brush. So I’m using a drill and a wire brush. Use whichever drill you’re comfortable with. This is lightweight, cordless and I’ll put a link to this drill and wire brush in the description section below.
First thing, put the drill in reverse mode, press the trigger to open the chuck up. Forward Mode. Put the wire brush in, not all the way in, hold the chuck and press the trigger. It’s in there. This is very sharp, definitely use gloves, I’ll link them below as well. With this brush, you can’t clean with the front, you clean with the sides. Also, wear goggles because stuff will fly all over the place. Wear a long sleeve shirt and pants because my hands and pants were covered in it. So that’s me exhausted already. It helps if you put the pan on a work table and not bent over on the lawn like I’m doing. I wasn’t going to pull the table out of my garage because I thought this would be really quick. It’s not quick,if your pan looks this bad, it’ll take you an hour, two or more. You can see how much has come off. Doing the inner edge is a little tricky. It’s using the speed of the machine, not so much the pressure you exert. I did about 30% of the work and the rest was my helper with bigger and stronger hands. It was a little much for me. The battery will definitely need to be changed if you’re using a cordless. This one has a light on the side that tells you how much battery life is left. Clean the brush off on a rock once in a while. So we took a break, washed off the pan and finished the next day. We used up 2 batteries and switched to another drill which is a little heavier but still manageable. Your pan might not have 2 handles like this one. It took a lot of time to really get in there and clean both handles. And we changed one more battery. So 4 batteries in total for this pan. But the result is awesome. It looks like a different pan. Now it’s not absolutely perfect, there are some spots that we or he could go over but this is good enough. If your pan has a handle like this with a groove, you could get a smaller wire brush to get in there. See the difference between a seasoned cast iron pan and this one. I have to clean the edges of that pan too. If you neglect it, it builds up and takes much longer to clean. We have to season this pan before using because if you use it now, whatever you cook will stick to it badly. To season, put a tablespoon of oil on the pan and rub it all over. Wipe off any excess and put it upside down in your oven. The oven should be at 450 degrees Fahrenheit/232 celsius. Leave it in the oven for 1 hour, turn off the oven and let it cool down in the oven. I seasoned it once and tried to make dosa on it and a little bit stuck in the middle. So I seasoned it again. Because you’ve stripped the pan, it needs to be seasoned a few times. The pan will become non stick again after you use it a few times. There’s my beautiful black pan, almost back to being non stick. I made dosa after dosa without any sticking. It’s best to use medium heat or lower when cooking, especially right after stripping it. I hope this video was useful, if it was give it a thumbs up. The links to the two drills and wire brush are below the video in the description section. Subscribe and I’ll see you next time. Thanks for watching :)

Have you ever heard of an E tank? It uses electrolysis to remove the build up from your cast iron pan for you. Pretty amazing. You should check out a video on it if not, just to learn about the process if nothing else. I love cast iron! You guys did great sticking it out on this one.

Electrolysis tanks are great! They get rid of rust and built-up organic matter. Lye tanks are good, too, for getting rid of organic matter. They are simpler to set up and only require one tank. Easy-Off oven cleaner and a garbage bag is a simple way to strip cast iron, too. Some put their cast iron in the oven and run the self-cleaning cycle. Others advocate tossing it into a fire. From what I’ve read & watched, the latter two methods are not well recommended.

Great info video. Thanks for this. Mine was rusted so I cleaned it with an angle grinder fitted with a wire brush. Removed all brown rust but it doesn't seem to be clean. There's always black particles when I wipe it with kitchen towel.

I"m going to acquire a brush for my drill! I recently refinished my mother's cast iron pans. I did the fire method. Before bed, when we bank the fire in the stove, the pans were nestled deep into the coals. The next morning most of the stuff you're brushing off was gone, but I could have used a brush for the remaining. I then did five rounds on the larger and seven on the tiny pan of oil & bake, oil & bake, oil & bake. Now to use consistently to finish off the seasoning.

Thanks for another great review. I was wondering sometime if you would test and review the Redmond hand mixer. Kitchenaid are junk any more and I don’t know what to do for one. I’m not crazy about the cuisinart either lol. Thank you for the time. I wouldn’t know what to do with out my cast iron !

I have wondered if it would be possible to burn that build up off? What do you think? In an outdoor fire of course.

I’ve heard that some people use this method with good results 😁

Hey Anita.. could you tell me if this method only takes the buildup off the pan or does it start to smoothen out the metal of the pan? I kinda like the rough finish of the lodge pans so I was wondering..
Also.. is there any way to simply avoid buildup altogether? Thanks!

    • @bestkitchenreviews
      @bestkitchenreviews  2 роки тому

Hi, it takes the buildup off. You can stop when you’re happy with how the surface looks. If you regularly clean and scrape your pan as you see buildup, you shouldn’t have to go to the level of cleaning I did! After each use, wipe the pan of any grease, wash with hot water and scrub with coarse salt if necessary. Dry thoroughly and wipe with a little oil, wipe any excess off. Hope that helps 😁

My gosh, woman. Is there NOTHING you can't do?
Umm_ I want more BLOOPERS like from before... lol.
UPDATE: The ABOVE was just after the video started, BEFORE I saw the true state of your castiron pan. D@mn, I can't get a possible conversation out of my head now you might have at a gathering in your home - "So, hun; that 'stuff' in your castiron... what IS it?" "Oh, that's just the pan's NATURAL patina. You DO know that you must allow the patina to properly grow and mature, don't you?" Oh man! hee hee

Good for those who use cast iron skillet but for me I like my non-stick cookware better. I don't like cast iron pans at all, it takes too much maintenance - sorry!

If it is not broken, do not fix it. Seems like it worked just fine.. BTW a flappy disk would work much faster. you could also use a cup brush that would work better.

I gave you a thumbs down because you added music, its annoying. I watch all your videos so please don't add music to other videos. I have unsubbed to 800 youtubers so far because they added music.
