  • In this weeks episode, Paul and Suzanne visit St Ives (Not St Ives).
St Ives is a medieval market town and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district in Cambridgeshire, England, 5 miles east of Huntingdon and 12 miles north-west of Cambridge. St Ives is historically in the historic county of Huntingdonshire.
As St Ives was founded on the banks of the wide River Great Ouse between Huntingdon and Ely, it had become an important entrepôt for trade in East Anglia. The size and prosperity of the medieval town can be still seen in its street plan. In the early 15th century, St Ives Bridge was constructed across the Great Ouse replacing an earlier crossing at this point. The six-arch stone bridge was one of only four town bridges in England to have a chapel. In the Early Medieval period, this had been a strategic location on the Great Ouse because it was the last natural crossing point or ford on the river, 80 kilometres (50 mi) from the sea. A flint reef in the riverbed created a ford; it was reused as the foundations for the stone bridge. Throughout the medieval period, it was a source of income for the town as tolls had to be paid by all those wanting to cross, this especially applied to drovers bringing their livestock to market.

We enjoyed our walk around St Ives, but it was looking a bit tired. Maybe it was because it was a gloomy day. Have you been, (do you live there) and what do you think?

That is a lovely little town by the waterside, though i agree a little tired in places. Lots of History and interesting information. Thank you for sharing.

It is the same as so many towns, but at least it has the river, and the historic bridge, which make it a lovely tourist location.

Hi Paul and Suzanne. Thank you for sharing. Went to St Ives when i was very young but don't remind much about it. Last night we were talking about visiting Cornwall later this year for our wedding anniversary. The chips looked good. Dave likes fish cakes. Pleased you enjoyed your lunch. A free museum is always a bonus. Love the chapel on the bridge. Everywhere does look better when the suns out. I bet that dark chocolate and ginger tasted good. We enjoyed this very much. Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️

Well if you do go to Cornwall, have a lovely time. The food in the chip shop was very good, and especially because not to much grease. We had been to St Ives a few times in the past, but didn't take in the History, and now that we do research a little before we visit places, we are always surprised at what we have missed. Thank you for watching....Paul and Suzanne.

One of the comments from a local, has said that the market is much smaller now, which we expected to hear. We do like the town, but the best area is down by the river. We did enjoy our visit. Thanks for watching

St Ives town centre was doing reasonably well before covid (better than other towns in the area); there were very few empty shops, which is probably how you remember it. However, after the lockdowns finished, footfall seems to have dropped (like it has everywhere) and costs increased, so shops quickly started closing down, which is a shame.
The market has been in decline for years. The bank holiday market became smaller when the guided busway opened in 2011, as stalls were no longer allowed on Station Road, but it was already starting to decline by then anyway. These days the bank holiday market is only slightly bigger than the normal Monday market. As long as the weather is fine, it fills the Market Hill area and is reasonably busy, but it doesn't go onto any other roads anymore.
Broadway has always been a bit scruffier than the rest of the town, I don't think that has changed much, except a few empty shops. There is a small plan to make some improvements down that road, which I think will make it look slightly more inviting.
Like you said, I think the main reason it didn't look as nice as you remember is that it was a very dull, grey winter's day. St Ives always looks much better in the summer, especially by the river.

Thank you for your comment, and for the detailed up-date, we really appreciate it. We all agree that most places look so much better during the summer months, and St Ives riverside is especially beautiful. 👍👍

The town does look a little tired in places, but the saving grace is the area down by the river. The bridge is very interesting.

Ha Ha. No, wasn't even any salad to have on the side. I sometimes go for weeks without any chips, but we have been on so many days out recently that i have had them once a week.😊😊😊😊
