- In this informative 5 minute video, you'll see, from start to finish, how Seven Six Drum Company builds a 6x14 purpleheart stave snare drum. Starting witrh raw wood, then build the shell, finish it, and drill for hardware. Note that in this video, I did not film the cutting of the snare beds…that occurs just before drilling and assembly.
These router jigs are pretty clever. Beautiful work.
Thanks
WOW it's astonishing how beautiful the finished product looks ! I need to look into one of these for myself.
Thanks. We’d be honored to build you a drum.
That's a beautiful snare.
It's a pleasure watching your video Marc!
your drums isn't just an instruments, but a truly work of art!
thanks so much. I can say the same thing about YOUR drums. Gorgeous
Gorgeous drum, and that jig is brilliant! I really like those lugs. There’s a snare at a local shop that has those, and it seems like they should let the shell vibrate a bit more. I’ve been thinking of building a snare around a set of them. Cheers!
I just bought the 8” X 14” Zebrawood snare from Mark. The drum is sick!
Good job. I'm a purpleheart lover myself :)
Wow, ya gotta love the purpleheart, beautiful job.
Thanks so much
Great and clear video, which also includes dimensions, thanks. 🙂
Thanks
Nice piece. Interesting lugs, too.
Thanks
Great build!!!❤
Thanks
Unfreak'n believable. So nice.
Thanks!
Awesome video.....great snare!
Thanks
use a 18" round floor sander sandpaper.
Good idea, but I like the versatility of a square format. Thanks.
Hermoso ❤...
Donde puedo conseguir esos lugs?
Beautiful. One important part I missed was, what is the snare bed depth? A perfect routered edge is not good for the snare side.
I don’t show the snare bed cutting in this video. It’s moderate depth and wide enough to use 30 strand snares
Very cool!
Now if only I had any one of these gigantic machines...
I wish I had a gigantic machine, too
@@SevenSixDrumCompany cheeky.
@@MadWinter889 seriously. I would love to have a huge CNC router to do all of the cutting and shaping for me via computer
Great vid. Was surprised to see no relief for snare wire end tabs?
Take a look at video description. It mentions that the process of cutting the snare beds was not included in the video, but was certainly included on the drum
@@SevenSixDrumCompany lol...my apologies; usually so focused on the vid... Interestingly, it made me investigate some of the snares here and the snare beds arent cut (obviously) on most of them.? ie Pearl Firecracker (edit...this one is clearly relieved), pearl free float master, sonor 10", DP cocktail etc...they are super subtle. What do you recommend for the relief? Esp on a 10"
Great build man love the hardware where do you find those lugs
I have a lot of my lugs custom built for me
I was wondering how I can get that plan for inches that appears in 3:16? How can I find it on the internet? THXS!
Google is your friend: www.google.com/search?q=layout+template+for+drilling+holes+in+drums&client=safari&sca_esv=8b0f0bb61a9c22c4&rls=en&sxsrf=ACQVn09Jz38nhlbHBvZI6kzYezRaGPvHnQ%3A1707501345975&ei=IWfGZayEO-KtqtsP9cSNiAk&ved=0ahUKEwjsmLiZ6p6EAxXilmoFHXViA5EQ4dUDCA8&uact=5&oq=layout+template+for+drilling+holes+in+drums&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiK2xheW91dCB0ZW1wbGF0ZSBmb3IgZHJpbGxpbmcgaG9sZXMgaW4gZHJ1bXMyCBAhGKABGMMEMggQIRigARjDBEjTFFAAWMEScAB4AZABAJgBaKABiwqqAQQxNC4xuAEDyAEA-AEBwgIKECEYChigARjDBMICDBAhGAoYoAEYwwQYCuIDBBgAIEE&sclient=gws-wiz-serp#cobssid=s
awesome
Good job,, 👍👍
Excellent work, where can I get the template for the hardware holes? 3:20
I found mine by googling it…don’t remember the site
Hey, this may be asking for too much. But is it possible to get a supply list for that amazing finish. It is stunning.
Thanks.
It is 9 coats of 2K polyester, sprayed on with a high quality HPLV gun. Every 3 coats gets sanded before next 3 coats are applied. Final coats dry and get sanded up to 3000 grit. Then buffing with quality car buffing liquid, polishing, and waxing with a car waxing cream.
@@SevenSixDrumCompany what are the best buffing pads for this?
Hex-Logic Medium-Heavy Cutting Pad, Orange (6.5 Inch Pad made for 6 Inch backing plates
@@SevenSixDrumCompanythanks, what is the other pad?
@@PeytonOhOsborne buffing pad, but I don't use that anymore
Nice drum. I would personally replace the polyester with something else, oil probably. As well the bearing edges looks bit strange, but might be just an optical illusion in the video (or your preference). But no snare beds...?
There certainly are wide and deep snare beds, I just don’t show that very exciting snare bed cutting process in the video. As for polyester/oil/polyurethane, etc, that’s totally personal preference. Not sure what you’re seeing with bearing edges…these are offset 45 degree edges
Is milling the inside of the shell necessary, i think it looks really cool
I’ve considered leaving it unmilled. I think the issue would be sound quality. Sound waves bouncing off of flat surfaces would sound different from sound waves bouncing off of a curved surface. Worth looking into, though
@@SevenSixDrumCompany
I wonder how this would sound with a thin shell and reinforcing rings milled into the bearing edges?
I’ve done that with my shells. Check out my Blue Bayou drum. That has a thin shell and reinforcing rings milled in
Wow!!! I’m drummer and carpenter, and really would like to do this soon! Do you know anywhere where I can get plans to build the jig system? Thank you and beautiful work.
Thanks. Look up “koko jig for dum building”
do you have any diagrams on where exactly to drill the holes for the hardware and how tall the snare is?
Yes, just Google “snare lug hole template”. Not sure what you mean by “how tall the snare is”
Love the Jig for milling inside and outside. Is that your design? I use a lathe but there is good bit of vibration on thinner shells - thinking about moving to a router jig and looking for ideas. Beautiful drums!
Look up the “koko jig” for drum building
Wow! Beautiful work!
Wait, so there's no 2nd round of lugs on the bottom? The resonant head just floats?
Sorry, I don’t understand the question
@@SevenSixDrumCompany Typically the vertical lug will have 2 horizontal attachments to the shell near the batter & resonant heads... this snare appears to only have 1 horizontal lug attachment.
These lugs are double ended single point lugs. As you can see in the final photos, tension rods enter the lug at both ends (double ended) and the lug contacts the shell at the lower nodal point (single point of contact). If you look at my website at 76drums.com, you will see that I use multiple types of lugs, some have a single point of contact, some have dual points of contact, and some have separate dual point contact lugs for the top and dual point contact lugs for the bottom.
@SevenSixDrumCompany Very cool man! I will check it out. Thank you.
Jeez. I wouldn't mind having a stack of those staves sitting around just to look at. Using wood that pretty is almost like cheating. :)
I’m lucky that there’s a great lumber yard nearby that sells a good deal of exotic species
beautiful shell but why the mix of hardware? looks like sonar , dw, remo and evans... odd but looks cool
I installed the hardware that the client chose. I have built many drums using the brass Champagne Drums lugs you see here, along with a DW or Trick or INde throw. Each of my drums is unique.
Beautiful Work , but I did notice you’re using a DW throw off 🤔
Yes, I use throws by DW, Trick, Inde, W.Odd, and Nato. I don’t own my own metal foundry, so it’s not possible to build my own throws. Most boutique drum builders that I know either use brand-name hardware or have it built by someone, so it is still not built by them but it does not have a brand-name on it
@@SevenSixDrumCompany no, that was awesome. You’re inspiring me to try to make my own, and I would do the same because there is no better hardware than DW. 🥰
Is that stencil you have under the snare for spacing out the lugs available for purchase? Where do you find that?
What thickness wood did you start with?
Most of the wood I use starts out at anywhere between 3/4” to 1” thick
Did you come up with the router jigs yourself, or is there a pattern available anywhere?
Look up Koko Jig for stave snare
This one time at band clamp....😊
That turned out incredible!! I was wondering, what did you buff it with?
I use a random orbital sander with a Pad and Meguiar's G17220 Ultimate Compound, Color & Clarity Restorer, Scratch & Swirl Remover, followed by a coat of Carnauba Wax.
How does it sound??
You tell me: ua-cam.com/video/aHj_8S6-s-M/v-deo.html
Cual es el grosor de la madera?
Final thickness is about 1/2 inch
What grit sand paper are you using?
Sanding occurs through the entire build process and runs the full gamut from. 40 to 3000 grit
Fantastic craftsman ship ! Is this a hobby or the start of a new business ? Customized drums & for that price will they sale for ?
Are you taking orders , if so - when ??
This video wasn’t shot at the start of the business, but yes…I’m a drum builder based in New Orleans. All of your questions can be answered by checking out www.76drums.com
Amazing drums at a surprisingly low price. I was expecting $2500+
Wow! A bit more than a Lego build...
Hi: for 20 staves 81 degrees? 360/20/3/2 = 9 dregrees in each side
Cheers
why ÷3?
Beautiful drum but no playing demonstration?
Yes, there are performance videos of all of the standard drums I build. Here’s the video for this drum: ua-cam.com/video/aHj_8S6-s-M/v-deo.htmlsi=pEJaxOZ1O1L14kOR
Vent hole?
It is 1/2”
@@SevenSixDrumCompany perfect!
Where can I find lugs like that?
Champagne Drums
SUPER
No snare bed???
Yes, snare bed
Cutting of the snare bed was not included in the edit of this video, but, of course, there’s a snare bed
Where did you get the brass hardware from?
Champagne Drums
Which is Of the Thicknees on staves
Staves start out at about 0.82” and end up at about 0.60”
@@SevenSixDrumCompany thanks
Wow awesome build! Which finish did you spray on?
I use Prestec high gloss 2 part polyester top coat with an MEKP hardener
How much is a snare drum like that?

Hey what's up my friend I just subscribed to your channel. Is there by any chance can you think you can customize a snare drum for me?? I want a 6x13" in black I want throw-offs on both sides.
Glad to build you a drum. Please fill out the info here so I can give you a quote: www.76drums.com/customsnaredrums
step1-9: this isn't so bad, i could probably do this. step 10 install in jig and mill............dammit!
Black hoops.
Gold lugs.
Chrome rods.
...seems legit.
Very legit...and exactly what the client requested. I build drums for drummers, and use the hardware they request. Thanks for your input.
was looking beautiful, until you got to the asymmetrical hardware.
…and yet, many drummers have custom ordered that exact setup because they love it, so…
Noble & Cooley snare drums use a similar one point offset lug configuration.
All just a matter of taste and or vision. We all like different concepts. This company is really cool. Well crafted drums!
Yeah... beautiful drum, but that hardware triggers my ocd
I'd have a whole kit like that
Step one, buy about 10 thousand dollars worth of power tools and set them up in your huge woodwork shed that you don't own! Lol
I WISH! Tiny shed is where I do my work.
I think you mean you sprayed polyurethane? Polyester went out of fashion in the 70s
No, sir. I use 2k polyester clear coat, which is the same substance that most of the large drum corporations use. Though it is much more difficult to work with than water or oil-based polyurethane and more difficult to clean up, It offers a high gloss and very effective durable protection against the elements and abuse. Viva la 70s!!!

Sorry, I don't understand your comment
Everything was going great till you installed those hideous black hoops. Also the interior show should have been clear-coated.
We specialize in hideous hoops. Also, clear coating the interior is not a common practice. It causes sound waves inside the drum to bounce around too much, making it more difficult to control overtones
