  • After the ultra-conservative Supreme Court struck down Biden's first student loan forgiveness plan, the President is back with a new plan. While much more modest in size, the $40 billion plus program could deliver thousands of long-term borrowers from crippling college debt.

Why not use TARP to pay off student debt like the gov't did in 2008's $700 billion dollar buyout of the Banks? I would consider student debt a 'troubled asset.'

That entire manipulation of the student debt regulations is a criminal enterprise of the highest order. Whichever politicians that were paid by lobby industry to enact these laws and sell out generations of our country's students should be investigated and put behind bars. For many years I struggled to make minimal payments and was told every year that I didn't pay enough to wright any of the interest off on my taxes. Then, working nearly double time for more than a year I was finally able to pay the remainder of my student loans off and I was sure that I'd be getting a substantial tax wright off for interest paid that year. Wrong? My tax preparer told me that I had paid too much and was therefore qualified for zero tax relief on the interest paid. WTF!
Also, I like to add that having paid my loans off completely, I have less than zero animosity for anyone who might qualify for a partial or even complete student loan forgiveness. Maybe you could do an investigation of which politicians profited off of this criminal multi-generational rip off.

The problem with the income repayment plan is the amount you pay doesn't even cover the interest and the problem with that is the way they roll the interest into the principal making your loan go up and up and up and never going down. You can never ever pay off these loans. This is why all loans like this need to be forgiven or allow people to file bankruptcy on them

When I get it it took three years you couldn't get a Pell Grant while you're waiting for it to complete and they forgave the entirety of my student loan which was over 36,000. @ritahodges254 a lot of Republican followers, both the rich and the poor, are victims of the financial institutions in their home equity loan. People borrowed the money against their home equity, and paid the whole loan amount that they had borrowed over the years. They thought they were done with their debt, but the lenders said the payments only account for the interest, not for the principal hahaha. The finance industry in this country loves to put people in all kinds of debts. People love their credit card debt with outrageous interest rates, but hate to pay taxes for their SS benefit when they need it. Technically, for any type of loans, the monthly installment payments must cover fractions of both interest & principal. The truth is that borrowers must pay the constant amounts for each monthly installment payment based on interest rates & loan terms, but those installment payments account for different amounts allocated to the interest and the principal on each payment, because the outstanding balance is reduced after each payment is made until the end of the loan term. The finance industry only uses simple math formulas and evil conservative practices to make money. They are very proud of the way they cheat people out of money, but still blame those victims for their stupidity. What a world of the fascist capitalism! It's scary that those who control the finance industry & the system are right wing white supremacists & fascist billionaires of the Republican party. Luckily, the Biden administration really understands macro problems in this country to enact efficient policies to serve the public interest. Hopefully, the majority of good Democratic politicians will stay behind President Biden to protect the Democracy.

And yet will never make huge salaries they do it for the public good and to make a difference in many cases. Like me. Now I have a mortgage to pay back even though I also paid $30k in cash from my own money. So true. If they wanted to do a “ happy medium” then just say all payments made will go directly to the principal. Interest rates will be eliminated. No one is saying we don’t want to pay. It’s just tough. These are not auto loans or credit cards. These loans were to help us become better citizens and make something of ourselves but of course getting the carpet pulled. Not having to pay for years due to the pandemic they clearly don’t need the interest. Yet again a slap in the face like yea they need the money back with interest again. @@tmusa2002 there are actual plans to make public college free again. Ronald Reagan is the one that started making people pay for public college. My school I don't know if they started charging again but since Covid they have not charged a penny for registration or four classes the only thing you have to pay for is supplies and books which was always the case. They're also trying to find a way to go after these ridiculous ways private companies are charging for student loans my original loan was for $36,000 I never had the ability to pay it when they finally dropped off my credit rating it was over a $140,000 that is just flat-out ridiculous that in five years it went up that fast. How do they get that to happen is because they compound your interest every year. What happens when they compound your interest the interest gets placed back on to the principal so instead of original $36,000 say your interest is $5,000 for the year, it's probably higher but what that now means is that your principal instead of being $36,000 is now $41,000 if you're on the income-related repayment program you will never ever pay it off. What they're doing for incoming students is after they graduate and have been paying on their loan for 20 years they can apply to have the rest of it forgiven wiped out it's gone because it's ridiculous that it takes some people the rest of their life to pay it off and they end up having money still owed when they die you've got Congress people and senators having people coming to their office talking to them about that or something I mean emails or letters or telephone calls and sometimes these people are 60 or 70 and they still have not paid off their loans and they had been paying on it for more than 30 or 40 years. There is a mother who has been doing fetish pictures with people who have foot fetishes just to help her daughter pay off her student loans because it's so freaking expensive her daughter could not afford to eat. That's completely ridiculous and that's going to keep continuing and getting worse.

I got an employable major and now their debt is being transferred to me and I have to pay it or go to jail. Is that fair? Something else to consider if applicable in your state: In my state of Connecticut, if you delay going to college until age 24, live with a parent, and your parent does not claim you on their taxes, your tuition is covered 100%. My oldest daughter did this. She went to a 4 year state college. I believe it has to be going to college for 4 consecutive years, full time. Also, if your child does not go full time, but on a part time basis, the part time tuition cost is still covered, but only for 4 years. Meaning if it takes longer than 4 years to complete because of going part time, you would be responsible to pay all of the additional cost. Of course, if you can qualify for scholarships and grants, that would be applied toward the cost as well. Perhaps the remaining years going part time could be covered by student loans. This way, the loan debt is greatly reduced.
To find out about this, you would contact the state school to get the specifics.
The only draw back is you delay going to college until age 24. But working and staying at home for 6 years, and saving money toward college may also help to defray the added cost if you only go part time.
      Definitely something to look into!!

Biden's forgiveness plan will be a failure because it's not addressing the root of the problem: astronomically high cost and lack of earning potential. The next students will take out the same loans and the problem will start again.
The collages are guaranteed income because people 'have to go to college' and loans mean the money to do so is effectively infinite. There's no reason not to raise prices. If you want to solve that put the collages on the hook for 30% of the loans. Make them invested in student's graduation.
My brother graduated, but now works at Starbucks. He hated the job he found and couldn't find another one. You don't need a degree to learn how to draw. And there's not gonna be that many jobs for them anyway. If you're gonna go into debt, make sure it's for something with a good ROI.

It's not a poor tax: it's responsibility to honor your commitments. School loans are a contract. People shouldn't blithely sign contracts they have no intention of honoring. If a loan condition is predatory, don't sign the loan. No-one's forced to get a loan.

The college loan money is spent so repayment forgiveness is coming out of no taxpayer's pocket. I went to school for $18,000 and now I owe about $40,000 in student debt. I'm not asking for anyone to pay my debt I know that I need to pay it like a responsible adult. But when my debt has doubled just on interest I don't think that is fair or ethical. Especially because we are a generation that was basically forced to go and take out loans for college or tech schools. Parents and teachers sold us on this idea that in order to be successful we had to do this and no one took the time to explain compound interest. In fact my high-school teacher made us fill out the FAFSA in class and even made it a point that it had to be graded. This is absolutely nothing less than predatory lending practices. I didn't go to school for a garbage liberal arts degree or some woke bullshit. I went to school to become a mechanic and I never made enough money to make a difference. I'm a truck driver now and I make more money then I ever did as a mechanic and I didn't have to spend any money in school.
