    This was released on an album of her spirituals in the early 1960s. My parents purchased this album, and I also have a CD of it. She was one of the most talented women ever! And the cd also features a recording of her singing "Go Down Moses" which was recorded in the 1920s with a subdued organ in the background.

    I'm glad there are so many recordings and videos of this legendary singer. Aside from breaking the color barrier for African American classical artists, she was the most rare voice type....a true contralto. Most contralto rep is sung my mezzos trying to sing too low and dark. I wish there was video of her Met debut as Ulrica.

    I was listening to Christmas music on KUSC Christmas morning and they played a version of this simple spiritual performed by Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle with an orchestra and choir conducted by James Levine. I had the good fortune to stumble on this wonderful interpretation by Marian Anderson. She’s able to connect the words with the music in a way that Norman and Battle don’t. It’s a very special artist that can put the meaning of song before the sound of their own voice

    We used to sing this song in church in Ireland. Brought back memories. What a woman. When I saw the video of her singing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, it was breath taking. How life had changed for her. Thank you Eleanor Roosevelt for seeing her as a person, and not her colour. It's unfortunate times changed even more after that. Always made me feel sick. White people took over the native americans and bought/ brought slaves in. WHY? We do not deserve this planet. We all bleed the same colour. Make love, not war. RIP Marian Anderson

    • @brendaann727
      @brendaann727 Місяць тому

      That's cool. My childhood fellowship too. I love her voice, I can listen for hours.
      Did you know that there is no such thing as white people? We are all different beautiful shades of brown because of the melanin in our skin.
      I have Irish heritage as well as First people of the Americas. Many Irish were indentured servants/slaves here in the states. Native Americans made slaves of each other. Any people doing it is not good. It is terrible what happened to the first peoples, they were out-numbered because their numbers died down before anyone even got here. There should have been a way to keep the bad & greedy people from taking over. Sadly, it didn't happen. 😢
      Slavery is worse when it's institutionalized in a nation. People are still being trafficked now by individuals & trafficking rings, it's just rarely in the open. Thanking God slavery is no longer institutionalized in this nation! And that we have some godly leaders who believe & make successful efforts to stop the ongoing trafficking of human beings.

    I came back to find the comment of the person who thought "little bits a baby" sounded wierd. It's missing now? I was going to tell them that "little bit" in history was just an endearing affectionate term, usually for a little person or animal. It was just meant to make them feel special. I heard it used when I was a child. Marianne used this term when she personalized the song. I searched alot for the history, but couldn't find much. I do remember the term from historical type black white films. I'm almost positive it was mentioned in a Welsh/Irish type film. Example: "... just a little bit of a girl." Or "..he's a little or wee bit of a dog." describing those who were small.
